Fuck you Lisa Potter and/or whoever made the decision to do that to someone who was nice enough to give three weeks notice.  That happened to a friend who worked at Paris Las Vegas.  She got a better job at another casino & gave two weeks notice as a courtesy.  They had Security walk her out right then and there after boxing up her personal effects from her office.  These companies expect absolute loyalty but treat you like shit as soon as you say you're moving on.

Happy retirement to Barb! 12 years at Walmart is more than enough for anyone with brain cells. I hope she spends her time loving on her grandkids and spending her days relaxing.  

My husband is retiring in 5 months. He is not telling his employer and using all his vacation time before he puts in his notice, as he thinks they won't pay him out for it. His notice goes in the day he gets his quarterly bonus, and not a moment before, as they will try to screw with that too. It's really sad that people can work for years for a company and get treated like crap on the way out. The difference between Barb and my husband is he is hoping for a Lisa Potter person at his work to tell him to get out!

Yes, there really is no reason for that. There are certain industries where once your employer knows you intend to leave, they will tell you not to bother with a 2 week notice, and that's just expected, but I don't think big box store hourly employees fall into that category. That's just spiteful.

 

Oh well, I think financially Barb will be okay. Enjoy your retirement Barb!

Just another reason for me to hate Wal-mart, not that I needed any more. Very indicative of how they treat their employees. I'm so happy Barb is finally able to retire. I know she did the smart thing, in continuing to work until she was secure, not just relying on TM. Enjoy, Barbara!

Me too. I am proud to say I have never ever set foot in a Walmart. Shame how they treat their employees.

I used to shop there when I was a lot younger. Fact is, they are cheap and when you're poor it's hard to afford much else. But after watching the documentary about them, my husband and I vowed to try our damnednest never to shop there again. I found that if I utilize coupons and Cartwheel, plus my Red Card, Target is just as cheap, if not cheaper.  I now have not set foot in a WM in maybe six years?

Yes- I’ve shopped in Walmart when times have been tight and I just had to buy necessities but I don’t like shopping there at all. I prefer Target and Costco hands down.

Got an awful Walmart story myself. I worked there when I was 18 for Christmas season.  My grandmother was in the hospital and I got an emergency phone call while at work (as a cashier) that the family was gathering at the hospital, my grandmother wasn’t expected to make it much longer. When I told my CSM Manager or whatever they are called now she asked “How is you being there going to help? Being there isn’t going to improve things.” ? After bawling in the bathroom she finally said “whatever just go.”  Harsh. Mean and uncaring.

Right on Barb! My Ma worked in the photo department up until she died. They were cold and heartless and just wanted her badge. I do my best to not go in there. It sucks that sometimes they are the only place that always has this or that.

My mom always had 2 and 3 jobs when I was a kid growing up. One Christmas she worked at Walmart as a night stocker during the holiday season. It was brutal. They changed her shifts all the time, they’d pay her overtime, but the bare minimum number of hours they could stretch, and she was exhausted. That Christmas was so epic but even at the age I was I knew she worked her ass off to make it happen. It’s why whenever she asks me to do stuff I try to hop to. She deserves it.

Damn. I always hated Walmart because people would always manage to position their carts in those extra wide aisles so that you somehow still couldn't get by. Your stories make me extra glad I never go there.

Just in the interest of another perspective .... my brother has worked part-time for Walmart (second job) for maybe about 10-12 years. He does not have any problems with the way he's treated.

I am glad Barbara can retire. I do hope she's done well with her TM money. We always say it about the mothers - it ain't gonna last forever.

My oldest child worked at Walmart. She hated it. The holidays were the worst. She called Black Friday the Running of the Bulls. She only took the job so she could earn money to buy herself a car. She lasted three years before she got her butt out of there and into the legal field like her mama.

I would think that it's more people getting fired that become irate! And yeah, "oh Barb? That woman from the deli who has been raking in thousands from MTV for the past few years, yet continued to work here anyway? She's definitely trouble. Git er' outta here!!!".

I can't imagine working there during Black Friday. People are insane. I only worked there 6 months, because I was saving to buy a car too. I worked two jobs at the time. I worked at a daycare from 7 - 4 M-F and then WM from 6-10 M-F and 10-6 on Sat and 10-4 on Sun. It could be that I was so burned out from working almost 80 hours a week, but I hated that place.

Target treats their employees every bit as bad as WM! Same crappy pay, same game where they purposely work as many people as possible just under the threshold to qualify for medical benefits, same crappy schedule and treatment. Most big box retailer operate this way now. WM just gets the bulk of the bad publicity because the retail worker union pushes their agenda. The union has been desperately trying to unionize them since the 90s because they are the largest employer outside the Federal govt and the unions are dying to get their hands on those union dues. There have been cases where Target employees who started talking union and dispersing union material we're fired, but of course Target claimed it was for bad job performance. I shop at WM because they both treat employees poorly but at least WM is cheaper.

My husband worked at a place where as soon as someone gave notice his boss got would pissy and tell them to pack up and  leave right then and there. When he got a better job he waited until the day before his new job started, went to work and asked the boss out for coffee, telling him he had something important to discuss privately. He then told him this was the last time he'd be seeing him as he was starting a new job the next day so wouldn't be working for him anymore. My husband got the biggest sense of satisfaction from that, beating the asshole to the punch ??

About five years back I interviewed for a Human Resources position at a Target here in Las Vegas. The job requirements were a Bachelor's Degree plus related experience, of which I had both. They wanted to pay me EIGHT dollars an hour. I was like, are you fucking serious? I could panhandle on a street corner and earn more money. I ended up cutting the interview short, because I wasn't going to waste my time.
