S50.E20: Walton Goggins / Arcade Fire

Recommended Posts

So...over/under prediction that they bring in one of the Superfans to talk about the new Pope?

Robert Smigel, of course, is already dreading it, since the internet probably beat this show to any good material about him.

Or do what Colbert did earlier in the week and get Father Guido Sarducci? He must be thrilled Leo XIV is from Chicago.

The Superfans! Mike Meyers has been appearing a lot lately as Musk. I bet John Goodman would be up for it.

Da Bulls

Da Bears.

Da Pope.

I’ve seen stuff on Facebook about would-be guide dogs watching shows in a theater to train for the real thing. I am tickled that a few writers came across the same items and made a sketch about it. Props and fake dog paws are also welcome. The SFX of the rolled eyes? That was weird.

In other news, I immediately thought of Cecily Strong when I heard about Pirro’s “promotion.” I wasn’t expecting her here so quickly. Also, I’m still tired of Trump in the cold open. Nothing against JAJ . . . I just can’t stand the real thing, and that goes towards anything reminding me that he currently exists.

Cold Open: Aww, the Mother's Day cold open! Just as I was gonna say "Okay, when's this charade gonna end and Trump walks in" Trump barrels in, and shoots the load on Pope jokes. But at least Cecily is here to save it! And Colin in the sketch, just to get the brunt of spit takes again! Ugh, they know it's almost the end of the season, this was a very "lets get this over with" cold open.

And didn't she just have a baby?! And they brought her out here to spit out (fake) booze?!

Monologue: Just as I was gonna say "Walton Goggins has one of the best fiveheads in the business," it's the basis of the monologue! And his mama was here, and they were clogging! That was real sweet!

Founding Fathers: Baby Billy Freeman representing South Carolina shilling for the Second Amendment. He shows up, looks cool, peaces out, sketch over. That's how it should be. Nice and short.

Tiny Baby Shoe: Jane gets a pretape! The reveal of Walton Goggins having tiny baby feet was great. Easily the best part of the sketch. Even the random Sam Rockwell cameo, who also had tiny baby feet. (EDIT: apparently I don't watch enough White Lotus to realize why Sam Rockwell was there)

Brunch: So many people would kill for Walton Goggins flirting with them like he did with those moms. "Are you lord Jesus? Then don't be cross" was a Baby Billy line if there ever was one.

Dog Audience: Oh, this was gonna be a fun disaster. Dogs are fun and unpredictable on their own, but they're bored? Gold. The one that rolled its eyes made it 10/10. Longfellow's character made it great. "You. Kiss. Me." "That's different."

WU: Of course they delivered on Pope jokes. "If you're a woke Catholic, you're not Catholic anymore." As one of those...truth. Okay, I liked Marcello as Movie Guy this time. I laughed at "Gary Field" being Garfield.

Che's jokes were all great, but the callback to Movie Guy's "Am I right, guysss?" Had to be ad-libbed and that was great. Loved Mikey's short stint as the guy who ran into a spiderweb. And Heidi played my mom. She lives on Long Island but still thinks Times Square is like how it was in the 70s.

Deathly Diner: My first thought: "Someone remembers going to The Jekyll & Hyde Club." Or it also might be a commentary on Epic Universe, since they mention the theme park just opening. Okay, I started laughing it "...it might be your last!" the more they kept saying it. But then they kept thinking of ways to NOT say it, which really killed the momentum.

Midnight Matinee: Dismukes AND Squirm time?! And Walton Goggins can really sell the hell out of crapping on a toilet. Such a bonkers sketch.

Was it just me being grumpy or was the final sketch one of the worst ever on the show?

The duality of SNL: that was either the worst or sketch of the night. At least what I saw on the subreddit.

Walton Goggins certainly delivered, but his back must be sore from carrying this episode all by himself. Most of these sketches would NOT have worked with anyone else. Sarah was barely in this! Chloe and Devon weren't in this at all! And Ego didn't show up until the Deathly Diner sketch.

Next week's the season finale with Scarlett Johansson.

I only saw the first season of The Righteous Gemstones. Not really for me. In my head, the song opens: "They told me not to do it / But I did it anyway / In-sur-rec-tion!" And that's all I could come up with.

It felt like a natural final sketch, even though it was pre-recorded. And damn, it was weird. I think they would skip the powder and acid, going right to the mushrooms.

Man, I can't remember the last time I saw pure physical humor on the show. And Mikey didn't fall through furniture or crash through a wall. That was unexpected.

I'm guessing Scarlett makes Colin use more mouthwash than usual before bed tonight. And she'll have to watch him use it.

I know Walton Goggins has done other stuff, but he'll always be Boyd Crowder in Justified to me.

He'll always be Venus Van Dam on SOA to me.

This was a bizarro episode of SNL for me. I actually found most of the skits sweet or mildly humorous, while WU was not great and the WU featured bits (Movie Guy, white woman blah blah, guy who ran into spider web) were terrible and/or monotonous.

That opening monologue with Goggins and his mom set the tone. Maybe he's a good actor, but he seemed clearly emotional about his mom. The dogs at a (bad) play was cute. The "last meal" bit was cute and a bit twisted. Tiny baby shoe was cute and had a nice twist. The squatty potty was hilarious and disturbing - Goggins was all in.

Founding Fathers and the Brunch were both interesting and fun in different ways.

The cold open with Trump coming in pissed me off. Why do that? He isn't funny, and you ruined what could have been a cute MD opening.

Anyone else getting sick of Trump crashing the cold opening?

I've been there all season. Stop trying to make Trump humorous. You're enabling him and his followers. He's a horrible human being.

Specifically, which skit? The squatty potty one? I found it hilarious. I expected the new partner to screw up somehow, and instead they used an innocent squatty potty to bring nightmare images to the new partner's head. And Goggins went all out. Beautiful.

Note: I see comments about mushrooms or something? I didn't see that skit on the East Coast. What is everyone talking about? My DVR went from squatty potty to the cast goodbye on stage.

You made me google Baby Billy Freeman. I've never watched Righteous Gemstones. Was Walton playing that character here?

*raises hand* Plus, I was looking forward to the sweet and amusing song. If they just had to have Trump hijack the opening, then they should have had one of the mothers, or maybe a different mother, push him offstage. It would have been hilarious if the mother came on with a leaf blower and blew him away. Or maybe a Latino gardener with a leaf blower.

I too was a bit confused by those couple of comments.

I'd probably enjoy the show a lot more if I was drinking while watching. Unfortunately, I watch in the morning, so that ain't gonna work.

Colin makes a good Hegseth, at least in appearance. If he ever plays the guy again, he needs to try to act more like him. However, I understand he basically had to 'be' Colin Jost so the joke of Janine Pirro spewing booze on him would work.

In the monologue, were those real headlines? The last one esp sounded fake. My favorite part of the monologue was Walton dancing with his mom, esp the first dance. He's a great dancer. He'd win on Dancing with the Stars.

I didn't find the 2nd Amendment sketch to be all that funny. Maybe I would have if I was familiar with Walton's character.

Tiny Baby Shoe was ok.

Didn't particularly like the Mother's Day brunch sketch. I just found Walton's lines too gross.

When we saw all the dogs in that one sketch, I was hopeful, but I think it was a wasted opportunity. My favorite part was the bit where the dog rolled its eyes.

In WU, I loved Marcello's Movie Guy. I guess I'm just predisposed to like whatever he does. Mikey doing the spider web thing was good physical comedy. Diane the Mom Who's Only Read About NY on Facebook? Pass.

Deathly Diner was my favorite sketch. I thought it was very funny. "It's our first day, and it might be our last."

Squatty Potty was weird. Why get all freaked out by someone having one of those in their bathroom (though it really should be in their master bath, not the powder room or guest bathroom). Anyway, again I didn't like how gross it got.

I still like Walton, but I didn't really like him as the host here. One of his shows I'd recommend is Fallout on Amazon. I guess it's based on a video game, which I don't play. The show can be gross, but it's also really well done, and Goggins is fantastic.

Trivia note:  Those dogs were at the theatre in Stratford, Ontario watching a dress rehearsal of, I believe, Billy Elliot

The Spider Web Guy bit felt like classic SNL to me, similar to when John Belushi would come on Update to rant and throw a fit or Michael O'Donohue's "impression" of someone with red hot needles in the eyes ( a lotta screaming).  I like that when Mikey sat back down, they didn't try to drag it out.  Short and sweet, as someone else posted.

I know a lot of people like Arcade Fire, but I just can't take then seriously.  They look like a parody act.

I must be the only person in the world who remembers Goggins from The Shield.  He was fine and up for anything, but he's not a sketch comedian.

I definitely remember him from The Shield.

I don't know what makes someone a good sketch comedian. I think Goggins can be very funny, but he didn't amuse me here. I blame the writing.

I thought this was the best episode I'd seen in a long time.  I loved Walton Goggins as host, and him dancing with his mom.  He could go on a Riverdance tour.

I thought all the sketches were hilarious.

The only thing I didn't like was Trump, yet again, in the cold open.  I'd heard of Arcade Fire but not their music, and I was unimpressed.

Really decent episode, I liked the racy Mother's day brunch, weekend update the 2nd amendment, and spider web guy. "It was in my skiiiiiiinnnnnnn" lol.

The wigs that gave Walter a regular hairline looked great on him.

Surprisingly,  there wasn't a skit dedicated to the new pope being from Chicago.

I liked Cecily  returning to drench Colin --as Hegseth-- in wine.  It was cool seeing Colin play a character.

Definitely. Trump is all over the news in real life, so please give us a break SNL

I’m not sure the episode worked that well for me. It seemed like too many sketches either ended lamely or ended abruptly even if some were good overall

I might be in the minority, but Trump is an easy target that keeps giving material. For a sketch comedy show that that focuses on current events to ignore him would not make sense IMO.

To me, It's hard to not find humor in that buffoon. If we can't stop him the least we can do is have a laugh at his expense.

I would have agreed with that in 2016. Laughing today would be like laughing in Europe in 1938.

I like physical humor, but it needs to be tied to what is happening and not to what someone imagines happened. The spider web skit is more like a mental health demonstration than physical humor.

So was there a skit after the squatty potty skit, the one people hate?

Cold Open:
Phallic pope hats. Huh?
Ugh, spewing liquid into someone's mouth will never not be gross, even if it's alcohol.
WHERE WAS FATHER GUIDO SARDUCCI!!??!!????

Opening Monologue:
Walton Goggins may the new middle-aged male sex symbol but he's no Pedro Pascal. 😉 Mama Goggins had some clogging moves. Brava.

Weekend Update:
The Movie Guy. Was it supposed to be funny because of his thick accent and malapropisms? There's a guy on Jimmy Kimmel's show who already does that bit, he just doesn't wear a movie usher uniform.
First American Pope. Yeah no on comparing the new Pope to a nazi.
Trade deal with the UK. Still with the Harry and Megan jokes, Che? Yawn.
I didn't get the Rubio & JD kiss joke.
Che's gonna get deported for that Alcatraz joke. OMG.
"Thick shorties" sounds like something Eric Adams would say.
A guy who just walked into a spiderweb. Mikey killed it. The bit, not the spider.
Another OBL joke this week? Why is WU fixated on him now?

Tiny Baby Shoe song. Well that took a turn, ding dong, bing bong. Mind your business, Sam Rockwell. Out here doing cameos with your tiny feet. Walton has a decent singing voice.

The Second Amendment. That scene was staged in an interesting way. The guys signing the constitution were all wearing dark suits. The guys on the other side of the room were wearing light earth tones. Not sure what the significance would be.

Mothers Day Brunch. Bottomless innuendos. Walton seemed to be having trouble reading the cue cards.

Service Dogs. The dog who rolled his eyes cracked me up!

Arcade Fire. I have no idea who they are but they apparently went to the Chappell Roan school of music about pink animals. Not a fan. At least they weren't lip syncing.

The Deathly Diner. Guess we're back to having two restaurant skits per episode.

2nd Arcade Fire performance. This group just seems weird for the sake of being weird.

Boss's Bathroom. Holy hell, what kind of fentanyl-laced crack-fueled nightmare was that?

Walton was quite game and brought his swagger. He seemed a bit self-conscious at times though. He can host again.

Osama bin Laden.

I heard on one of the late nights that there is a conspiracy theory that OBL was rescued from his watery grave by...people...and is waiting to return to power somewhere. Which, sure, he, JFK Jr and Elvis are going to return as a new political/entertainment/religious coalition! Memeworks?

I have no position one way or another in terms of the cold opening.  The typical reaction was just meh at this point.  More on that later.

Basically I'm in the middle so no opinion in terms of the cold opening.  In other words I was not impressed with the opening segment either.  I get how several are beyond tired of it, but for me, that's how I've felt over the past several years at the very least.  It doesn't matter who's there politically; Sure they've opened with a political segment most times for decades, but it still doesn't change the fact that I was more bored here.  There are a number of events going on Nationwide & Worldwide, so my issue is why is it super imperative to start with something that can be done later on.  Maybe before or after the first commercial break.

Meanwhile, no Father Guido is anything but a surprise.  Still would've loved to see him; Cecily was a pleasant surprise though!

That was dreadful.  Even WU, which can usually be depended on for laughs, was only lackluster.  Although I was amused by the Movie Guy's disbelief at Colin being married to Scarlett Johansson.

It was the squatty potty sketch.  It was kinda nauseating for me.  But then I thought most of the show sucked.

Well, the Navy did lose another plane off the USS Harry Truman so . . .  I didn't really get the OBL joke the first time, but it made sense to use it again.

I wasn't impressed with the show overall, but I got more laughs out of Weekend Update than any other one in recent history.  I agree Movie Guy's skepticism at Colin Jost being married to "Carly SoHandsome" was funny.  "Yeah, and my wife is Rihanna - I'm married to the Umbrella."

I FF'd the Movie Guy because the first two bits appeared to just be that he hadn't watched the movies and I didn't hear any actual jokes. Either a whimsical misapprehension or a bit of hostility would have been fine, but you can't keep me waiting like that. I also FF'd whatever Heidi's WU bit was. Nothing in WU really tickled me.

I laughed at parts of the Mom Brunch sketch but Walton Goggins stumbled over a couple of lines and disrupted the flow. I think maybe it started off too high and didn't have anywhere to go so it was hitting most of the same note with no real reason to have two moms and two sons other than wanting to give roles to more castmembers.

It was lovely to see Cecily again and I can handle parodies of spit-takes but after the first couple my feeling was it was nice if it made Colin and Cecily happy but it was not for me at all.
