S07.E01: Black Widower

I've stuck by this show from season 1, episode 1, but last season really was the last straw. The only thing that could redeem this for me? Having George R. R. Martin write season 7, and killing everyone off.

I'm watching this season for two reasons.  One, it's the last season and I've stuck with it this long so I might as well finish it out.  Two, I want Gemma to pay.  I don't want her to die, I want her to live out the rest of her existence in misery.  I'm open to how it happens, I just need it to happen.  I do doubt as to whether or not it will, but if it does I want to watch it.

This finale has been a long time coming, and I'm actually glad it's not going to limp on until everything good about it is gone.

I'm dying to see my beloved boyfriend Chibs as much as possible.  Might even be interesting to see Fiona again, and wind up his story with her and Kerrianne.

Unser... Unser.... Unser. Why are people always so nosy? Why couldn't he just mind his own damn business for once.

Gemma is a stone cold bitch. Wow.

Always amazing to me that this club metes out such violence yet is so appalled when violence comes to one of their own. You live by the sword....

I'm gonna try to stick it out for the final season but the violence just seems to escalate each season. I had to cover my eyes for some scenes. Sad... cause I have been a fan since the beginning.

Well, that was just chock full of torture porn, wasn't it?

So, Gemma gets her boyfriend back, gets an innocent guy to take the fall for her murder of Tara, and gets back her grandsons and son. I guess there is no such thing a karma after all.

I'm really not looking forward to this season. Is there anyone left to root for? Chibbs and Bobby are pretty much it at this point.

Gemma just set up an innocent man, a member of the Chinese gang, which of course is going to cause a whole gang war. When Jax finds out that Mommy Dearest was really the one who killed Tara, he'll realize what epic level of destruction and pain she's caused to him, his kids, SAMCRO, the other gangs/MCs, and the peace he was trying to broker. He'll lose his mind completely. That's when Gemma will pay and not before.

Gemma has got to be the dumbest person alive. She's just created a brand new enemy for the club when they were JUST making peace. I know Jax is Prince Mama's Boy but is he never going to realize her manipulations. She's constantly scheming, pretty much every other word out of her mouth is a lie.

Clearly Unser didn't do any serious in the field work as a cop. Walking weaponless into a home where you suspect someone on the run is staying, SO SMART!

I know SOA loves its gratuitous violence but this episode's felt particularly pointless and tacky. I'm with this show till the bitter end though, let's hope the final season is satisfying.

I think Kurt Sutter is going for the whole "how many disgusting, gross, heinous things can I get by the censors" route for this last season.  If he doesn't end this season with a pile of dead SOA bodies, I'll be surprised and disappointed.  There is not an even remotely sympathetic or redeemable character left.  I'm going to see this through since I started from the beginning, but sheesh, unless he has some terrific ending place to define the whole series arc, I expect to be left slack jawed, staring at the tv wondering what that was all about.  Or maybe that's the point?

So, the overarching theme of this season is that Jax has lost his last shred of humanity along with Tara is it? Got it.

That's Gemma, telling herself the same lies she always has to justify her behavior and willing to start a bloody gang war in order to cover her own ass.

I really, really wanted to believe that Jax had already figured out who was responsible for Tara's death and he was playing something out, but nope. He really is that stupid.

Every time I hear Charlie Hunnam talk, I get the giggles. His accent is such an all over the place blend of Jax Teller and Geordie.

Fuck you, Gemma. Fuck you, Kurt Sutter. Fuck this show.

I have to hand it to Katey Segal because when she calls Jax "Baby" it makes my skin crawl worse than anything else I've seen ever has.

Jax has everything and more coming to him for believing his vile, heartless mother. I was so hoping he was playing her in the car when she was working her way back into Queen Bee or whatever the fuck the head old lady is called but he wasn't. He was buying whatever shit she was selling him hook, line, and sinker.

They all deserve a miserable end. I caught a few minutes of the after show and Charlie Hunnam was explaining it all comes back to Abel and if anything was going to spur Jax into action it would be him. Um, hello, that ship sailed when the Irish abducted him 4 seasons ago. I would have gotten the fuck out of Charming as soon as I had him back. Sutter, Segal, and Hunnam are deluded about who we're rooting for. We're fans of the show but everyone I talk about it with hates every single character.

Except Alvarez. You'll know me throughout the season because I love me some Pepaw dimpled cheeks Alvarez. And seeing the preview I'll have lots to swoon about. ;)

I don't think I'm going to get the Gemma comeuppance I feel I deserve.  That's what I got from this episode and from the post mortem interview.  Like Kurt Sutter really believes that she's not a psychopath.  Just because you can justify your actions to yourself doesn't mean you're not a psychopath.  That just means you're a delusional psychopath.  "I don't think she's trying to replace you...or me." BITCH YOU CRAZY!

The only good thing was that it seems like Wendy knows Gemma shouldn't be the one taking care of the kids.  I was worried that she was going to be on the Gemma bandwagon.  We'll see how long that lasts.  I wouldn't put it past Kurt Sutter to end the series with Gemma wearing the President vest at the end of the table with Jax behind her and his hand on her shoulder.

Gemma and Jax were extra creepy with the incest vibe tonight.

Wow, that was quite a ending scene. I like darker killer Jax, it fits his role as President more than lets all get along Jax.

Gemma's talking to Tara? Is she cracking?

10 days later and Juice is just hanging out in town? Did love his cleaning of Wendy's apartment.

Unser needs to die already, he needs to mind his own business. But Wendy all but told him she had a guest. She bought items at the grocery store when she's moving out and she just left the groceries on the counter when they have to go in the fridge.

I think it would be rather funny if Unser, the man who has been dying for umpteen seasons, were to be the only one left alive. Oh, and Nero, the DA, Wendy, and the new Sheriff. I think those are the only ones I like, so they can live.

I really, really wanted to believe that Jax had already figured out who was responsible for Tara's death and he was playing something out, but nope. He really is that stupid.

After the way last season ended, I thought sure he would at least have some suspicions, or be trying to feel her out. Dumbass. Poor Juice, to be dependent on Gemma to stay alive.

So, the overarching theme of this season is that Jax has lost his last shred of humanity along with Tara is it? Got it.

Sutter and Charlie Hunnam were guests on the live discussion show following the episode. Charlie mentioned that he believes that Tara was his moral compass, and now that she's gone, he's released from answering to any conscience. He mixed accents in that live chat, too, but it was the opposite of how he does it on the show: some Geordie with American sprinkled in.

I haven't watched the entire discussion yet, but from the first five minutes I can tell that the discussion host is no competition for Chris Hardwick (the host of Talking Bad). I'm probably being too hard on him, because I'm sure he was nervous.

Gemma talking to dead Tara over the sink, assuring her that she was doing everything she could to take care of her family, was crazy and creepy.

What can you say about a show where you want the two main characters,  mommie dearest and her precious baby boy, to just die.  I used to really like Jax in the earlier seasons but I lost a lot of sympathy for him over time and tonight after he tortured that innocent guy to death I just want him gone. He is irredeemable and so is Gemma. Unfortunately I am not convinced that Gemma will get her comeuppance when all is said and done. She is like a cockroach living through the nuclear winter, probably still alive and justifying every one of her horrible crimes to herself after every other living being is gone.

I just can't with Gemma any longer.  She is vile and beyond any type of redemption.  She needs to pay for what she's done but good lord, Jax is too stupid to do anything about it.

Do the Sons ever get their facts straight before they go busting into apartments and homes all over town and shoot the occupants?  How does Charming still have residents that aren't related to SAMCRO?  Based on the history of the last 6 seasons, I'd be moving the hell out of there.

Unser's discovery of Juice was lazy writing, IMO.  Would Wendy really send Under to get her coat when Juice's backpack was in the closet?  Would she really leave a bag of groceries out when she's leaving?  And Unser returns to poke around and is surprised that Juice confronts him?  Ugh.

leighdear, Chibbs is my boyfriend too!  The only character I care about at this point.

Why is Kurt Sutter punishing me for watching this show? What the hell? I haven't seen so many dead eyed zombie people since The Walking Dead and I don't even watch The Walking Dead.

The thing that rubs my fur up the most is the at this point has to be deliberate blind stupidity of every single member of this God-forsaken club. Jax is sitting there, clearly numb to some point beyond death, saying in one breath how he's lost Tara, he won't lose the club (or my kids, he does NOT add) and in the next flat out informing them that everything he did up until now was stupid and mistake and they all are going to kill and die. Now, I would be willing to believe that everybody who's still so spiritually and emotionally bereft that this table is the only place they find any meaning to their pointless existence is just ready to lemming off the nearest cliff and end it all, but no. Sutter is asking me to believe that these guys are still so loyal and in love with the ruin and despair that is Jax Teller that they are eager and willing to follow him into the latest round of lies, misunderstandings, fucked up deaths and endless retaliation that is the shaping force of their lives. Christ, you idiots, get a hobby! Remember when all these guys had quirks and character traits and families? No? Me neither because all that was sucked into a soulless tornado of torture porn and idiocy.

Gemma, man. I guess I admire Katie Segal for taking such a monster of a character to her logical end point. People like Gemma don't have epiphanies or awakenings or any of that, they just refocus and rationalize and get everything settled back to ME ME ME. When she was sitting with poor dumb Juice I was hoping against hope that somewhere in that brain of his some connection would finally fire, some Bullshit Level Alarm would finally ring, and at least one person would finally see this narcissistic harpy soul-drainer for what she is, but no. Juice was so racked with guilt over killing another member he tried to hang himself a while ago but now he'll do anything to save himself, even believe the truly epic amounts of crap that Gemma builds her pedestals out of.

Jax is also at his logical end point but man, if the whole season's going to be "Emotionally shattered man takes the shreds of humanity still absurdly loyal to him and goes on his usual grandiose series of suicide runs" this is going to be tough to sit through.

Always amazing to me that this club metes out such violence yet is so appalled when violence comes to one of their own. You live by the sword....

Right??? How is it that no one, not one person, ever, ever gets this? I keep waiting for the clouds to part and a Divine hand to reach down, bitch slap everybody and bellow "YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO BE SURPRISED!"

Ugh, Gemma.  I just want her to die the most gruesome death of all. She just got her son to murder a completely innocent man.

I really kept thinking either Jax or one of the boys would somehow ping that this guy was innocent.

I hated the bastardization of the Bohemian Rhapsody.  If you can't use the original just don't use it at all.

Also, fuck you Gemma.  Did I mention Gemma should die a horrible death?

Sutter's shock reveal of Gemma outlining how she saw Chinese dude was not earned and it was not believable.  Jax was asked a ton of times about the murder of Tara - including by club members and he always said the "Sheriffs said nothing."   Then, we got the recounting and mea culpa by Jax about how we all got to this point and not a peep as to Gemma being a witness to the Chinese guy.  The entire point of that meeting was to tighten the bonds of trust and he kept this little detail from them.  Sorry, Sutter.  You do not get to do that.

I do give Sutter credit for forcing Jax to finally and ultimately declare who he was with that scene with the DA in the jail conference room.  There is no coming back from that.  He was given a last chance and he made his irrevocable decision.  Happily, Sutter has no need to extend the series past this season, so he won't try to redeem Jax.

I hate that Nero has become stupid.  Another arc unearned by Sutter.

The vivisection of Dun was beyond any standard of decency.  It debased humanity.  Yet, THAT is the core of the story.  The MC has been little other than evil personified.  There is no "liking" them, for me.  I do give Sutter full marks for being fearless in presenting what that can look like and now, seeming to be relentless about it.

I'm out. Wake me up when Jax finds out it was Gemma. Otherwise, this show continues to be as unbelievable as it ever was, boring and gratuitously violent. I think violence should be like sex--it's ok to leave something to the imagination. When you have a cast and story that leaves no one to root for, you have a failed show. This show has just devolved into torture porn. Blech.

The ending of the season and show has to be Jax finally, truly realizing what his mother has done and who she really is, then doing something about it.   I still find it hard to believe that he's forgiven her for her role in his father's death.  I think we're supposed to think Jax has done some mental gymnastics to blame it all on Clay.

I forget who said it, but I do try to remember this: "When somebody tells you who they are, believe them."

Maya Angelou. It's "When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time." Words I try to live by - took me years to take it to heart but it's always, always true. And yeah, that's why Tara's insistence that Jax was a good man all these seasons drove me nuts. He's a murderous criminal who cheated on her. I don't even believe he loved her - he may have thought he did, but his version of love is one I'd run from.

Was anyone saddened by Tara's little grave marker? No headstone, no "beloved wife and mother," just a little plaque with her name.

Tara just died and they just buried her, head stones usually aren't done instantly and are put in a few weeks. I didn't think anything of there being no headstone, I just assumed since they just buried her that her grave wasn't completed yet. She just had a marker.

I did find it interesting they didn't put Teller on her marker, just left her as Knowles.

I think it was because she had only been buried a few days prior.  It can take up to six months to get a headstone installed.  There is the production of the headstone and the grave has to settle.

I still think Sutter is brilliant, and I am going to savor every moment of this last season.  His ability to make people really FEEL that hate for Gemma and Jax is such an amazing talent.

He's getting exactly what he wants from not only his actors and story, but from his audience.  They are watching and feeling.  I will watch despite my distaste and revulsion for some characters and actions and it's just human nature to want to see how it all ends.

Chibs and Bobby BETTER survive it!

I though Jax rubbing the salt in the wounds of the Chinese guy was a nice touch.  When he was talking to Gemma at the party and commented "I didn't think I'd live this long", my mind immediately thought "Hang on a few more minutes Mr. Patsy".

Coming out of the land of lurkers...to post my first.

Jax...he is vile, evil. Its what he knows, he grew up in that environment. The kind of love he has for people he cares about is real in his capacity to love...and he does love deeply. I believe he did really love Tara, he believed her to be his soul mate, his moral compass if you will. Now..he was first on the scene after her death, he saw the extremely violent manner in which she was murdered. Maybe somewhere in the deep recesses of his soul he knows exactly who is responsible but can't quite allow himself to register that yet. All he knows is he wants to exact revenge...and exacting revenge is something he does quite well. I mean, who of us wouldn't want the same if we happened upon a loved one murdered in that manner?

So along comes mommie dearest (whom I loathe more than any character ever) and she plants this seed in Jax' mind...someone to blame for Tara's death. Because he can't quite let himself go to the place in his soul that knows it was his mother...and he exacts revenge on that person in a very violent manner, similar to how he believes Tara was murdered. And he takes his time...makes sure that person feels every.little.thing she felt. That is what Jax Teller does, he reacts. Without thinking things through completely and in this case, completely blind to the real truth that is probably buried in his psyche somewhere.

He will figure the truth out...and it will be delicious.

Yeah, me too. We've known for many seasons that some characters (Tig, Jax, Gemma, Juice) are just so far beyond redemption that their fates are sealed. I will say I am surprised by the people who bemoan Tara's death; she was another character who had become irredemable for me.  No matter how many rotten things Gemma has done, I thought Tara's faked miscarriage was wose. I mean, you know, right up to the fork in the head.

But the whole bit with chaining a black guy in a wheelchair for crissakes, to a motorcycle and dragging him down the street and having the rest of the MC standing around and chuckling about it - it was just too repugnant for me.  I don't know if I know how to explain; there are ways to show that someone is bad without making them so bad as to make you feel unclean by watching it.  There have been many things on this show that have made me wonder if Kurt Sutter is a complete freak who is just trying to see what he can get away with, and I think I may have my answer. I couldn't  stick around for the whole after-show - that host just does me in; be cheesy or be a nervous amateur, don't be both, please.  Someone else here pointed out his inferiority to Chris Hardwicke and I'll add an amen to that. But anyway, if he had some rational explanation for why he seems to want to only torture the viewers at this point, I'm listening.  I mean, damn, Sutter, what did we ever do to you?

When Wendy is looking like the only half-way decent character left on the show - yikes, just not sure why I'm still watching.

Ugh.

We never actually saw her look in the closest, so we can't really assume she knew it was there. When I first saw the bag, my first thought was "Wow, I get club pride, but they will put their logo on everything, won't they? A backpack, really?" But then I figured it was a bike bag and that was slightly more believable.

Stuff about the grave that has already been mentioned.

I agree with the other posts, it was just a placemarker. I found it more weird they waited a week to bury her. It's not like they had to wait for Terra's family to come there. Gemma said family and Club and Terra's family wouldn't be Gemma's family.

I propose a drinking game for Assholes on Motorcycles. (As I said on Ray Donvan, Sorry Boston Assholes in LA - If I simply called shows Assholes I would get very confused) - Any time it looks like Gemma is going to make out with someone, take a drink. Gemma and Jax had the incesty vibe, and I was just waiting for Gemma and Juice to make out as well. (Not that I would blame her, after the naked push-ups.).

Since I'm still wading around in the shallow end, while I could do with less torture porn, I could easily do with half-naked bloody Jax. In fact, if season 7 is nothing but Juice doing push-ups, and Jax shirtless and bloody, with Chibbs talking in the background, I would be happy with that. In fact, from this point out, that is how the series ends - no matter what happens!

On a less shallow note: While I too hope that Gemma gets what is coming to her for everything, including setting up the innocent guy I understand why it has to be done, from a character perspective. Jax needed someone to do that too. To make someone feel the pain Terra felt. It's his way of grieving. He had to do violence to someone and whoever was accused of killing Terra I think would have been given that much violence - I think if it had even turned out to be one of his Club Brothers. But there is one person he could never put that much violence on - and that's his mother. He's been angry at her, but at the end of the day, she is still his mother. I think when he does find out it was Gemma, she'll get something simple like being shot in the head - if it's by Jax's hand. And I think that would have happened anyway if he wasn't given the opportunity to torture an innocent person. It wasn't just the violence, but it had to be with the Club watching. And he could never have done that to Gemma with the Club watching. Especially since she is crazy and that will probably be some sort of defence at the end. Whether it's true or not, Gemma will certainly use it as one, even if she doesn't realize it. And she might not. Gemma will manipulate any situation she can, but crazy doesn't always know it's crazy. And you can't manipulate things if you don't know what's going on.

I mean, he's still an asshole, they all are and always have been, but I understand from a character and story point of view why it had to happen.

On  less serious note: Did anyone else have the urge to watch Labyrinth after watching the montage because Wendy feeding the baby and saw the jumper he was wearing and thought it looked like the one Toby wore in Labyrinth? Sort of threw me out of it for a minute there.
