Pulitzer Prize winning critic Tom Shales dead at 79.

Quote

Shales was hired to the Post as a Style section writer in 1972, before being named the newspaper's chief television critic in 1977, kicking off more than three decades of incisive cultural commentary that coincided with early cable TV. His coverage spanned genres and mediums, from late-night talk shows to State of the Union speeches, from network sitcoms to nightly news programs...

While at The Post, he also channeled his snark at the silver screen as a frequent film critic at NPR, where he was heard on Morning Edition for two decades...Jay Kernis, the founding producer of Morning Edition and NPR's former senior vice president of programming, said Shales' reviews were key to the early success of Morning Edition.

"NPR listeners looked forward to his Friday segments, not only because they trusted his judgment, but because of the wonderful style and wit in which he wrote," he said in an email.

SF/F author Howard Waldrop has died.  His story "Night of the Cooters" was turned into a short film.

Hw was a very funny man and a popular guest at science fiction conventions.  Here's video of Howard Waldrop, Gardner Dozois, and George R.R. Martin at my local SF/F convention talking about their (mis)adventures:  https://youtu.be/nvdsmhQYTyc?si=RrvlKwuYAYiKfBeX

I was surprised I didn’t see this here yet.   I recall seeing this actor in several popular roles.  He was very young.  So sad.

Since this story initially broke, legit media outlets have reported that Mr. Musser's cause of death on Saturday, January 13, 2024 was suicide as per the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office. Moreover, it was his fiancee Paige Press who found him and added that he's been suffering from 'a severe case of COVID'.

I hope Mr. Musser can now RIP.

Mr. Jewison sure lived a long and productive life (and he made some of the most entertaining and thought-provoking productions)! We need more movies like Moonstruck (1984), etc. ! RIP, Mr. Jewison!

Charles Osgood has died.

https://www.cnn.com/2024/01/23/us/charles-osgood-death/index.html

He was such a good host of CBS Sunday Morning -- definitely a worthy successor to Charles Kuralt.

I enjoyed him so much wherever I found him -- Sunday Morning, the weekday morning CBS show for some years with Paula Zahn and Harry Smith*, or on the radio.

*They played at least one holiday concert on the show:  Charles on piano, Paula on cello, and Harry with tuba, I believe.  (ETA:  And Mark McEwen on triangle, IIRC.) Weird but lovely.

One of the kookiest yet infectious pop hits ever.

May Melanie RIP, but I cannot change the radio station fast enough when “Brand New Key” comes on!

R.I.P. Melanie 😢😢😢 While my sisters were into roller skating and loved Brand New Key, I was always more partial to her first hit Lay Down (Candles in the Rain), which was inspired by her experience performing at Woodstock. 🕯️🌧️

I loved his Apollo Creed, Greef Karga, and Weaver (the sullen-but-game commando in Force 10 from Navarone).  But I especially loved that, offscreen, he was a stand-up guy and a devoted friend — even against the prevailing winds of public opinion.

Here’s his Super Sky points memoriam from @Super70sSports:

“Farewell today to the Count of Monte Fisto.  This is the second time your death has broken my heart. Make sure St. Peter's still got the eye of the tiger when you get there, boss.”

Carl Weathers dying has bothered me more than any celebrity death in quite a while. I first saw him in Predator. He was great at drama and action, but his comedy stuff in Happy Gilmore and Arrested Development is what I always default to with him. I think his run on Arrested Development playing a cheapskate version of himself is one of my all-time favorite guests bits on a show. I quote him from there all the time. 😂 And per the showrunner, that direction for the "character" was all Weathers' idea!

My friend, and incredible talent, Hinton Battle, died last week.  He was funny, and smart and so thoughtful.  And he could dance and sing.

Gift link from the NYT

Here's the opening from the Tonys when he won for Tap Dance Kid.  In the last week, there are a bunch of new YouTube videos that weren't there when I last looked.  Those will keep me going for a while.

No! This makes me so sad. I saw Hinton Battle on Broadway as the Scarecrow in The Wiz, when he was still a teenager (so was I) and he was already wonderful! He was a huge talent.

@ebk57 I'm so sorry for the loss of your friend.

Toby Keith has passed away at 62.

This is from his official Facebook account, which I doubt would make the story up. No details yet, but he was battling stomach cancer for the last few years.

He was a polarizing figure for sure, but a big one, and not just because he was a very big man (before his cancer battle, unfortunately). Whether you liked his stuff or not (he was one of my favourites, I must admit), his songs always had a lot of heart, and no one could quite pivot between "serious" and "funny" quite like he could.

I'll miss him anyway.
