George Sr. is asked to help with the football team. Also, Mandy discovers Georgie and Meemaw's secret business

I should have seen this coming. The San Antonio trip when Wayne and Darlene seemed like the happy couple and the one doing everything right while George and Mary were doing everything wrong, oh how the turntables. Poor Wayne. And it looks like Mandy is finally starting to appreciate George.

Well, I’m glad that George got his job back, but I wish it hadn’t come at the expense of Wayne’s marriage breaking up. So Darlene did a 180 into a cheating bitch who got pregnant by Wayne’s best friend? Getting strong Two and a Half Men vibes…but at least George went to bat for Wayne too.

Georgie is now of age now, right? So his hookup with Mandy in this episode is no longer complicated?

Did he? The last thing the principal said was “You quit”. I guess he might have meant last season? Never mind. I’m glad he got his job back.

Lorre is pretty much incapable of having any marriage be a happy marriage and it's usually because of the woman.  Oddly I think the only exception to this is Sheldon and Amy.  Not sure what to make of that.

When they shook hands George pulled him in to get mud all over his coat, and said "that's for firing me"; the principal (whose name is escaping me) pointed out that he quit. But he only quit because the principal admitted that he was going to be fired.

I think the scene I enjoyed most was when Georgie stayed in Sheldon's room on 'leak' watch so Sheldon could have some pizza. It seemed out of character for Georgie but it was also really sweet and I may have swooned a bit, heh.

That scene ranks up there with Georgie helping Missy get an A on her homework. Sweet.

I know!  I think we are witnessing the transition of Georgie the kid into Georgie the man.  And Mandy and the baby have everything to do with it.  What a heartwarming twist to a plotline that I really thought was going to suck!

Best vanity card ever.

Nice to see George get a win (literally).  It seems like they drove this family right up to the edge of going over the cliff, but now they're backing off of it.  It's a bit like the sword of Damocles still hanging over everyone's heads though.

Georgie has been acting so mature and responsible.  I know it's not "correct" to like his relationship with Mandy, but I can't help but root for it.

I don't think Lorre can write women characters at all, and I will die on that hill. Amy is TERRIBLE.

My favorite part was Georgie stepping up. Montana's doing a great job with the role.

But almost as good was George and Mary and their "if anyone was going to split, you'd think it would've been us" comment. Awesome.

And of course a Sheldon-lite episode is always good with me.

I'm worried about who would come to a baby shower, with all the hypocritical church people in that town.

It's nice to get away from that drama and have some lighter moments with the show, even if it is short-lived.

To trade in his much-loved car for a family car spoke volumes about his character.  Way to step up there, Georgie!!  I was also glad to see Mandy having dinner with the family too.  Although a little awkward, it was a nice moment.

The dinner conversation may have been a little OTT for the sake of "humor," but it was more realistic than most dinner conversations depicted on TV shows that I've watched.

I liked that part too. I was bracing myself for the worst after their rekindling fell apart last week, so it’s nice to see them on the same page and making a lighthearted joke instead of Mary getting all bent out of shape.

Georgie is becoming quite a fine man.

Not bad of an episode.

Nice to see Georgie stepping up. I wonder if Mandy will be his first wife or not.

So the perfect couple is not so perfect.

Nice to see George stood up and made sure that his buddy wasn't going to be fired. Would have been nice at the time if his friend did the same thing. He threw George under the bus.

I think Georgie and Mandy are going to end up getting married.

This episode was really funny, although, poor Coach Wilkins!

I wonder what's going to happen with the casino? It's going too well, so it has to come crashing down at some point.

I know it was meant to be played for laughs but Missy announcing her teacher's affair and pregnancy is going to devastating for Darlene. Not that I condone her behavior but she's probably going to lose her job. And if the community turned on the Coopers because Georgie isn't married, what are they going to say about an unfaithful wife?

Missy did no such thing! She simply asked, discreetly enough, whether Mrs. Wilkins wants to give the test today with "everything you are going through."  Nothing more specific than that.  It will probably come out and she might lose her job (although the principal doesn't seem to be moving in that direction, at least not yet), but it's not on Missy. Loved her small talk with Coach Wilkins on the couch. "Saw your wife today." - "I heard."

Yes, but George did have an extra incentive here - "He is my friend. And if I want him out of my house, he needs a job"- that Wayne did not have at the time. Why is he the one out of his own house, by the way, and not Darlene?

Are the Wilkins part of same church community as the Coopers?  I never had the impression the school or the town as a whole were the issue, it was the specific fundie church that Mary worked for that turned on her.  Totally agree with you if they go to the same church though and nothing happens.

I think all three marriages were good ones actually but both Bernadette and Penny were portrayed as shrewish, controlling and bullying.  Of course that did depend on the episode!  They didn't do this with Amy.  She and Sheldon were the couple that, IMO, came across as the most likely to remain a couple.  Pretty sure if BBT had stayed on the air Lorre would have messed with the others marriages.

I don't think so.  Seems to me someone said something in a recent episode about him not turning 18 before the baby was born.

Honestly, I don't have a problem with Wayne & Darlene's marriage blowing up like that.  I always found their relationship to be too good to be true.

But, damn, this was a really funny episode.  And very little Sheldon, which is always a good thing in my book.

Google says the Texas age of consent is 17.
So that was never an issue, since the show's timeline moves at such a snail's pace:

  • 1989-1990: Season 1 takes place

  • 1990-1991: Season 2 takes place

  • 1991: Season 3 takes place

  • 1991-1992: Season 4 takes place

  • 1992: Season 5 takes place

  • 1992-1993: Season 6 takes place 🡰 current season

Oh Georgie.  What a good heart.  He's so genuine about doing what he's doing.  He's not really looking for an angle or an "in" like he might with business.  His being on leak patrol with the simple explanation of "I'm babysitting, and this is the only way I can get my little brother to eat" just about killed me.

It reminds me of an earlier season when Georgie found out his girlfriend was afraid of her dad because she was being abused.  He knew he was powerless to do anything, but that scene at the door with his desperate look to his dad and George stepping in like Georgie knew he would was fantastic.

Mary also steps in with the right thing, and not just churchifying as you might expect from her, when it is really important.  The kids are alright.  Except for Sheldon, who remains tone deaf and self-absorbed.  But that's who he is, he's absorbed some of this good parenting, but his focused personality doesn't let it out very much.

I know about the age of consent in Texas at the time because we've discussed it here extensively.  I just thought the original poster meant 18 because that's what "of age" means to me.

Georgie only cares about Sheldon being weird when it impacts his reputation or standing at school. If it's at home and no one aside from family is around to see it, he's okay with it. He may comment on it, but he's okay with it.

He's always had that side of him. In an early season, the second he saw Sheldon and Missy at a high school party he left and brought them home. The scene with the girlfriend's abusive father or stepfather was amazing. Georgie (who was much smaller then) was willing to put himself between his girlfriend and a very large man. George stepped in and saved and the day, but Georgie was willing to confront him and put himself at risk if he had to.

I agree. We've seen hints of it before, but the baby storyline is bringing his responsible side front and center.

I love that Mandy has no problem with the illegal casino. Now that she is on the secret, maybe they will let her work at the video store. Sitting behind a counter has to be easier for her than being on her feet all day.

I don’t think Darlene is going to lose her job over it. Like you said, Missy was discreet, and honestly, Darlene had no right to bitch out Wayne just for commiserating with his friends about his life falling apart. It’s a small nosy town, people will find out eventually. And he is such an emotional mess that he almost lost his job over it. Darlene seems to be doing just fine so far. I’m sure the church won’t shun her as long as she marries her new boyfriend. 🙄

And if she gets judged, so what? I don’t condone slut-shaming, but what do you expect when you dump your husband for his best friend. A parade?

Awww Georgie holding the bucket so that Sheldon will go eat was so sweet. I was not looking forward to this pregnancy story at all, but I love Georgie stepping up and slowly growing from a goofy teen to the much more mature man who is going to look after the family. He's always been a good kid at heart, but now that that's coming through more than ever. And its nice that, as awkward as the situation is, the family is trying to include Mandy, especially considering how her family apparently wont speak to her.

The circumstances are very unfortunate, but I'm glad that George is coaching again, its clearly what he really loves to do.

Mary and George being like "I thought that we would be the ones breaking up" was hilarious.

Mandy was quite interested in the gambling business.  If the writers want to go darker, a possible scenario: Mandy becomes heavily involved in the business. The police raid it. Meemaw, Georgie, and Mandy go to prison for a longish time. The baby is born in prison. Mandy gives it up for adoption.

Personally, I didn't like the scene where Missy tried to blackmail Darlene into canceling the test. YMMV, of course, but the way Missy was smiling gave me the impression that she was ready to go into more detail if the test wasn't canceled.

I liked the fact that George was focused on the kids, more than his job or Wayne's trauma. Those kids are innocent in all the adult drama.

Wayne and Darlene's break-up reminded me of Debra's parents' divorce on Everybody Loves Raymond. Two "perfect couples" split while the definitions of dysfunction, Frank and Marie Barone and Mary and George Cooper, soldier on.

Yes! That was fantastic.

We're seeing Georgie transform into the man who held his family together. (Makes me disgusted with BBT Mary who described him and his sister as being "dumb as soup.") But I am concerned about him. He's putting it all out there for Mandy and the baby ... and I'm not sure I trust her. Really want to be wrong, but I'm afraid she may wind up smashing his heart. (Which might be a factor in his other failed relationships.)

This is what is pissing me off the most about the way they've handwaved away most of what we were told about the Coopers on BBT,  I get that they needed to make changes but in the process they're throwing Mary and Sheldon under the bus and that sticks in my craw.

I thought that was a much needed message considering all the political hatred and divisiveness in the country these days.  Good to keep some perspective.  I know most people don't read the cards, it's just my obsessive compulsiveness that makes me read them.  Once in awhile there's a good one.

Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with him quoting from the Bible, but it's pretty rich coming from a man who has consistently written divisive things on his vanity cards over the years.  Sometimes it's a subtle dig, but it's there.  He talks out of both sides of his mouth.

I was taken aback by how quickly Mandy jumped to the conclusion that because Connie runs an illegal gambling business, her child would go to private school. The business belongs to Connie; Georgie is just an employee. And it can get busted at any time. I wonder if she's going try to manipulate Connie into giving a share of the business to Georgie when he turns 18 (not that Connie is easily manipulated). And is she being affectionate with Georgie again because of his displays of maturity (i.e family friendly car and "leak patrol"), or is there also a gold digger aspect to this?

She seemed genuinely touched that Georgie traded in his sports car for a family car.  He's trying so hard to win her over, and it hasn't gone unnoticed.  I think she was just excited at the possibility that she might be able to give her child a good life, because up until that moment, even with Georgie's financial help, it was going to be a struggle.

It just didn't ring true to me.  Don't get me wrong, I liked it, but the impression you're given is that Georgie has often done stuff like this for Sheldon and even leaving aside the BBT way Sheldon spoke about Georgie, this still didn't really sound like the Georgie we've seen up to now on YS.  He has been shown to be a good brother but never IMO to be the kind of brother who would sit and hold a bucket so Sheldon would eat!  Show's trying a little too hard to push Good Guy Georgie here.

I think about all of the times he told Sheldon to get lost.  I agree with you.  They're pouring it on a little thick with his character!!  I noticed though when Mandy commented on what a good person Georgie was being, he said something to the effect of 'it's working', so it's probably his character pouring on the charm just to win her over.
