Jeopardy! Season 39 (2022-2023)

I've seen bits and pieces of Stage Door but was not familiar with the calla lily quote.

I enjoyed The Paris Review article very much.

Another o.k. game - not horrible but not great either. In the J round I got 4 in "Born on the 5th of July", "All Shapes and Sizes" and "World of Food". In DJ I ran "Religion" and got 4 in "Rhyming Phrases".

Got 2 TS and 1/2 of the missed DD - gets were Rhodes and fugu. Got systolic but couldn't come up with diastolic (I said asystolic). I thought I was going to have one more TS, but said Valencia instead of Seville for the orange clue. In DJ my TSs/missed DDs were 1918, by hook or by crook (DD), numbers game and Unsers.

No FJ today. I briefly considered somewhere in Southern Africa, but couldn't visualize mountains so was trying to come up with a landlocked country near Mt. Kilimanjaro or Mt. Kenya. Finally I just thought Timbuktu sounds like it could be in a mountainous area so I went with Mali.

I was rooting for Aubrey today as I didn't particularly care for returning champ Kate and didn't particularly like "social media coordinator" Anji either. Oh well.

It was a decent game for me.  I got the missed dds or ts's of Seville, panel, numbers game, Salvador Dali, Unser, by hook or by crook, and Inca.

I knew Lesotho is landlocked so I went with that even though I had no idea of its elevation.  So more or less a lucky guess but it's my first this week so I'm happy.

Yesterday and today Kate had outfits with wide longish sleeves and stood with her arms behind her back so it looked like she was armless.  It was very disconcerting.

New champ seems nice and has no obvious tics or weird mannerisms so I hope she stays for a while.

J!: Argh. Missed one in Shapes & Sizes and World of Food, two in Born on the 5th  of July, City of the Book, and Opposites, and four in Art & Artists (I knew Botticelli but I just blanked).

DJ: Argh some more (but a little better, at least). Missed one in Memoirs and Religion, two in Nations' Last Monarchs (of the four they got to), Rhyming Phrases, Math Abbreviations, and Who Are "U"?

I got FJ! I was not at all confident. It was the only landlocked country* I could think of in Africa and that's only because I know it's within South Africa.

I wasn't really rooting for anyone, but I was kinda leaning toward Anji. Maybe because I like her blouse, and I liked her story about how all her niblings surpassed her in height at age 11 (that's about when I passed my mom, too...I'm not exactly tall and I was always small for my age as a child, but she's even less tall). But I liked Aubrey and he's an English teacher, so I was kinda leaning toward him, too. I wasn't crazy about Kate yesterday but she seemed a little more relaxed today so I would have been fine with her coming back again, too. So I guess I'm trying to say I'm happy with the winner tonight.

*I googled: Out of Africa’s 55 countries, 16 of them are landlocked: Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Central African Republic, Chad, Ethiopia, Lesotho, Malawi, Mali, Niger, Rwanda, South Sudan, Swaziland, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

I forgot the category.  I take it back, Bhutan was a terrible guess.  I doubt I would have gotten it anyway.  I would have been thinking tall mountain and said tanzania.  I don't know my African geography well enough to know it's not landlocked.

My first thought was something like Tibet/Bhutan/Nepal (but hadn't settled on anything) until I noticed the category again. I definitely don't know my African geography that well (geography in general is not a strong category for me).

I said Rwanda because of the mountain gorillas.  It makes sense!  But that makes me 0/3 on FJ this week.

I did get a bunch of TS, though, including fugu, peach pit, Savannah, systolic/diastolic, Cecil Rhodes, Dali, Unser, by hook or by crook, 1918 (total guess), and factorial.

I, too,was thinking Tibet for FJ, but then quickly saw it was Africa and had no clue.

TS's were systolic/diastolic, running numbers, Dali, Unsers, if and only if and Inca. I got the DD of by hook or by crook.

My FJ guess was the Congo. Don’t ask me why; as like others African geography is not my strong suit.

No, I don't think so.  the Episcopal church also has a high and low church being more catholic and not so much.  I think they''re also related to the Anglican church.

From the first google result (CNN), "The Anglican Communion is made up of 46 independent churches, of which the US Episcopal Church is one." I always understood Episcopal to be basically the American branch of the Anglican church. (So Episcopal are Anglicans, but not all Anglicans are Episcopal, I guess?) The wording of the clue didn't seem to point specifically to the English church.

I was initially debating between Rwanda and Burundi for FJ, before realizing it was probably a country further south. I then spent the rest of the think music debating Lesotho vs Eswatini, and picked Eswatini. If nothing else, I should have figured J! would be unlikely to use Eswatini because a lot of people don't know about the name change and still call it Swaziland, and that could introduce extra confusion into FJ.

I take my blood pressure daily, so I definitely know "systolic" and "diastolic" but I was a bit distracted during this game, and when I heard a clue asking for the words to represent how the heart pumps, I said "lub dub".

The incorrect guesses for the Rhodes TS were something. 

Getting distracted by diamonds and making up a Harry Winston scholarship for that one just made me chuckle, but after mispronouncing Iran I was not exactly pulling for Anji.  But she's hardly alone in the "Ay-ran" pronunciation that is such a peeve of mine, so good for her being the only one to correctly guess FJ and getting the win.

If not for the art category, I'd have only missed two in the entire first round (I couldn't remember the Japanese name for blowfish or come up with Seville).  Alas, I almost blew that category entirely, only getting tapestry.  (I knew Botticelli, I just couldn't spit it out in time.)

I only ran phrases in DJ, but I still had a great round; I missed two in memoirs, but got all but one each in the rest.

And I knew FJ -- I got lucky and didn't have to sort through landlocked African countries to come up with the one I thought was at the highest altitude; I happened to know the "kingdom in the sky" nickname thanks to a South African acquaintance telling me about a recent trip -- so this was one of those odd games where I got better as it went along.

I know NOTHING about African geography but recently learned about Lesotho from Jeopardy! so I got FJ!

DirecTV is in dispute with Nexstar, because Nexstar is trying to double the fee they charge DirecTV to show their programming. Where I live, that means the NBC affiliate that carries Jeopardy is not available to view. All other programming, whether national or local, is also unavailable. I have a Roku stick, so some NBC programming is available on some streaming services, but not Jeopardy, and others are available only after a few days. I've been going over J! Archive postings, but it's sure not like watching it!

I loved seeing the Urbanna Oyster Festival question. It's been a lot of years, but we once attended the Oyster Festival and had so much fun! Plus I love oysters prepared any way.

Yes. Same roots, different trees, but much in common. The main difference, historically (and the reason for the split) was a refusal to recognize the King of England as the head of the church in the US. The Episcopalian church has also been more liberal, overall, than the Anglican. But in recent years, a split has been raging within the Episcopal church, with more conservative factions disagreeing with some of the more liberal policies. Gay rights, women priests, etc— many want to dial this back and it’s caused some real contention. (Loss of constituency, online services… it’s a far cry from what the vibrant, close-knit community of old.) I watched Tuesday and Wednesday back to back. TS= terrier, whippet (whippet good!) (and yes, I sang it), baked Alaska, Radio Free Europe, toothless, stratosphere, Savannah, Unser, by hook or by crook, and Dali. I did not get either FJ. (Geography and classical music? Did you expect otherwise?) 

I was rooting for Anji because I liked her voice. It’s a bit of a cartoon, and as someone who also has a childlike voice, I can relate. It’s part of what makes us both Fun Aunts. 😉

I say I ran, because that's how it's spelled. I don't say I talian.  Sometimes I say i ther, sometimes I say ee ther.

I suspect that relatively few people these days are all that familiar with Stage Door (I wasn't), which is a pretty old film. I think it's more that "The calla lilies are in bloom again" has become THE line that people say when they're imitating Katharine Hepburn, much like "You dirty rat" for James Cagney, or "Here's looking at you, kid" for Bogart.

Often, in many of these cases, people aren't really imitating the celebrity, so much as they are imitating other people imitating the celebrity. As the Paris Review article mentions, it's a fun line to say, and it kind of shows off Hepburn's mid-Atlantic accent.

I did get several stumpers/missed DDs, though: Cecil Rhodes, Savannah, wise & foolish, fugu, Cambodia, 1918, the Inca, by hook or by crook, running numbers, Salvador Dali and the Unsers.  Should've gotten David, obviously, and Seville - I said Valencia for that one because there are Valencia oranges.  That particular city is not, however, in Andalucia.

There were 17 stumpers last night and 2 missed DDS.  They really need to get better contestants.  This is getting embarrassing.  I mean, it's starting to almost make Suresh look like he was right!

Don't like the new champ.  Something about her lips bug me.  Which is shallow, I know, but it is what it is.  So she'll probably win a lot of games, just to drive me crazy.

I am one of those people.  Thanks for the info, which I will try to store in my Swiss cheese brain, where it can fight it out with David, Delacroix, Sinclair and Lewis.  Or get totally wiped away by arcane bits of useless knowledge about a certain actor in House of the Dragon - most of my brain cells have gone that way lately.

I've never heard anyone say that line when imitating Katherine Hepburn.  Not that I know a lot of people who imitate her.  I also wouldn't consider her accent to be mid-Atlantic at all.  Closer to New England, imo.

A tale of 2 rounds - good J round but horrible DJ.

In the J round I got 4 right in "Myth Mystery", "Antiques", "Road" and "Show". Could have run "Myth Mystery" but I keep confusing Artemis and Athena. TSs/missed DDs were Bridget Jones' Diary, tintype, Las Vegas Strip, Barcelona (DD), Singapore and show jumping.

Nothing good to say about DJ. - no good categories, no TSs. Nuff said.

But I did get FJ today - 2nd one this week. The only thing I know about Watership Down is that it's about rabbits. I tried to read it once, but just couldn't get into it. I finally gave up and ultimately donated the book to a local drive.

My terrible week continues, though I did surprisingly well in Myth Misery, missing only one. Also missed one in Books and Antiques, but three in A TV Series and Road, and four in "Show."

Managed to do even worse in DJ while running two categories, Science and 10-Letter Adjectives, and missing one in The Main Ingredient; but I missed four in Names in History and "Hard" Songs, and completely tanked Geographic Anagrams (Geography and Anagrams? No, please!),

Funnily enough, I played the J6 game during the commercial and I got all 12 of them right. Go figure.

FJ was an instaget.

TSes were Bridget Jones's Diary, Las Vegas Blvd (didn't actually know that was the name of the road, but I guessed the Las Vegas Strip, and since that was the first thing Ken said, I'm assuming that is acceptable) and tintype.

I was rooting for Alex; I wanted missing his graduation to be worth it!

The J! Archive shows "the Las Vegas Strip (Las Vegas Boulevard)" as the correct response. I also said the Las Vegas Strip, but did know that it is Las Vegas Boulevard.

J round had 7 TS and a missed DD while there were 4 TSs in DJ. I got 6 of the 8 missed clues in the J round, but alas none in DJ. Sigh!

FJ Watership Down was an instaget, and my first of the week.
However, I thought I might be wrong because it is *not* "just a story about rabbits," even if the original version told to his young daughters was just about bunnies.
But Richard Adams' "The Tyger Voyage" is a lovely rhyming children's book, with gorgeous illustrations.

So far this week I did get a lot of the TSs that all y'all did too. 
I'm not the only one who got the Rhône River am I?
Calla Lily was an instaget for me because back in the 80s when I switched from oil paints to mostly watercolors I did a lot of Calla Lilies because of the simplicity of their form, plus, they made nice gifts.
All that's left of my Calla Lily phase is this sketch done with a tri-color ball-point pen when I was pretending to take notes. Not familiar with the Hepburn line.

I can't believe Singapore was a TS when the clue basically asked "What's the city-state in Asia?"  Then again, while they aren't truly city-states, Hong Kong and Dubai are sometimes referred to that way.  Still, even if they thought there were three Asian city-states to choose from, guess one!  Maybe they didn't since it was the last clue and Anji and Carol were in a close battle for second place.  I guess I've talked myself out of my surprise.

It was a Bizarro World game for me tonight -- I had one of my worst first rounds ever, but did great in DJ.  I didn't run a single category in the first round!  I got all but one in show, antiques, and roads, but I missed two in TV and three each in mythology (of course) and books. But in DJ, I only missed three clues in the entire round (two in names and one in songs).

FJ was an instaget (well, instaguess I figured was correct).  So another one of those odd games where I get better as it goes on, but on an extreme scale this time.

I haven’t seen Stage Door in a very long time, but I remember it being a bit of a snooze, notable mostly for the Katharine Hepburn line and a glimpse of Lucille Ball’s dramatic acting career, in the days before she became comedically Loved. But it’s considered an enduring classic, so what do I know.

FJ was the kind of instaget that makes me doubt myself, because it seems too easy. But I’ll take an easy one, if it keeps me from the big looming bagel I was facing.

It makes me think of a humorous old promo-spot that Christiane Amanpour did 15 years ago, or so.  She was giving a newbie the lay of the land of her supposed new job.  The word ‘Iran’ came up and the newbie mispronounced it as ‘eye-ran’.  After correcting her a few times CA said something along the lines of “it’s not “I ran a mile.  No”.  I figure she would know, so that’s how I remember which one is correct, after a lifetime of saying and hearing it said both ways.

FJ pretty much came down to if you know anything about Watership Down. Because I thought as hard as I could and couldn’t come up with anything else that would even fit the criteria and be a logical wrong guess. For a second I thought “Were there bunnies in Animal Farm? I don’t think so…”

Oops, thanks.  There were so many that I lost count at some point and clearly got confused.

I guess last night's game was better?  Only 11 stumpers and 1 missed DD, so yay?

I did well in the first round but things fell apart a bit in DJ with both a science category and an anagram category.  Still, ran Myth, Antiques, "Show" and Adjectives, and got all but 1 clue in TV Series, Book, Road, Ingredient and Names.  Came up with 6 stumpers and the missed DD: Bridget Jones's Diary, tintype, the Vegas strip, Barcelona, Singapore, show jumping and Athens. 

FJ was an instaget.  Possibly allegorical story about rabbits is always Watership Down.  Which, btw, you should NOT give to your bunny-loving child to read.  Or any child, for that matter.

Glad that Alex won.  As previously mentioned, Anji bugged and Carol, while nice, was so slow picking categories.

I pre-called A Hard Day's Night when I saw the "Hard" Songs category.  I did terrible otherwise, though, only getting She Works Hard For The Money.  I knew The Harder They Come but couldn't drag it out of my brain in time.  The Jay-Z and Maroon 5 clues were complete silence on my part.

That's what I thought for a while, since her sleeves were full and longish, and she held her hands behind her back. I was wondering what kind of accommodation they might have for an armless person - foot buttons? But then she changed her position.

I've been learning the African countries and capitols on Sporckle for at least a month or two. Just about at 100% for each. But the maps on the game don't show anything about elevation - so since there are a number of landlocked nations, I was thinking about Burundi and Rwanda too. Now if they'd said landlocked within another country - then I'd have had a 50-50 chance.

When Las Ramblas came up, I informed the cat that I'd been there. As I always do when some place I've been shows up on TV. I'm sure she's thinking "Yes, I know, you left me alone with just a cat sitter to come in and feed me and play with me and tell me how wonderful I am everyday...when's your next trip?"

BTW, @saber5055 asked me to give ya'll a shout out. I touched base with her after the Westminster Dog Breeds episode, and of course she got them right, she knew some of the dogs in question, and one she knew simply by knowing the dog's name (she wasn't looking at the tv at the time).

I told her we miss her here on the forum.
