Another "taped in January" disclaimer...I would have guessed him just based on the school in the clue but the date popping up in the corner of my screen certainly helped my confidence. My score was nothing to brag about but I ran Can't Lose and Movie Critics, and got the TSes of ibid. (hey, did you know that Mayim wrote a dissertation?), Alexander Calder, Angela Merkel, and cerulean.

I didn't realize the Game of Life was that old (1960, so says wikipedia) but I guessed it anyway, with a half-laugh as I said it.

I liked Mattea but she needs to rein in the chatter.

It's certainly a matter of taste rather than anything objectively wrong, but it seems to me that it shouldn't take a rocket scientist to have realized in late January that such a flip clue about Putin's strongman tendencies might age badly before airing.  I'd rather they err on the side of caution, or common sense, than keep airing distracting disclaimers for those who don't know that these shows tape well in advance.

Loath though I am to agree with Blossom, I don't think D&D has gotten any more "cool" than it was when Camron was in school either.  He's just grown beyond caring about what the mainstream considers "cool" and has found more of his tribe than he had at that time.  And good for him!  Life's too short to follow the "cool" crowd.

I said Risk.  Because the game takes place over the whole earth.

I got the missed clues of Van Gogh , Port Said and Planet of the Apes.

Another bad night.  Might be time to finally scheule that brain transplant.

I did think that was a tough FJ clue!  Again, 2/3 onstage got it, so maybe it's just me.  My brain was stuck on games with a global focus like Pandemic or Risk (although I knew both of those were wrong).

I'm sure Life is not relatable to "literally everyone on Earth."  It's very much a game of first world problems / decisions.  Actually it strikes me as a sort of paean to the fantasy of living in Levittown with 2.5 children, which is just not for me.  Maybe that's why I didn't think of it!

I could definitely have gone without the laugh track after the "Anchorman" clue.  This isn't Big Bang Theory, producers.  If someone says something funny, we'll catch on and laugh.  Promise.

"Life" was the first thing that popped into my head when I read the clue for FJ, but I really didn't think it was correct.  I have a hard time believing it's relatable to "literally everyone in the world" -- lots of people don't have a choice about even elementary education, much less college.  I stuck with it, though, since I couldn't think of anything else that might be a reasonable guess.

I also got the TS of Gibson, Wilson, Van Gogh, Calder, Port Said, and Planet of the Apes.

It’s hard to compare streaming ratings to network because they’re usually measured differently, and because time shifting is so common with streaming, but even a wildly popular network series like This is Us only pulls in about 9 million viewers per episode.

I glimpsed the word "family" in the clue and guessed This Is Us while racking my brain trying to think of their surname before I saw the part about the French king and switched to Succession. (I don't watch it but have heard a lot of chatter about it.)

The Game of Life is also a game of chance though, in terms of what education/job cards you get. How you are able to do in life depends on the hand you are dealt at birth. Having said that, certain aspects have made me increasingly uncomfortable as I have gotten older (forced to marry/have children, etc).

Anyways, The Game of Life was the first game I thought of, but again was second guessing myself as I thought it had been a FJ answer fairly recently, however the search function is not working on j-archive for me (redirects to a google search, which isn't helpful) so I cannot check for sure.

I think the clue writers may have meant that life is something relatable to everyone in the world [who is alive] as a clue to Life the game? like a clue inside the clue that they use so much now? not that I got it but looking at everyone's comments it occurred to me that it might be the case.

Meanwhile on Reddit, reaction to various aspects of Mayim's performance today has been so harshly negative that the moderator has closed and deleted the daily game thread.  They've been accused of "simping" for her, which I think is unfair: it seems to me they're just trying to remain as neutral as possible.  But I think it is silly to have closed the thread altogether.  I didn't see any extreme or inappropriate comments.

I will repeat a comment made there that crossed my mind too: Blossom said the bibliography of her dissertation (drink!) was full of "Ibid."  Isn't the bibliography a list of sources?  "Ibid." would belong in the footnotes or endnotes.  At least that's how it was when I wrote my undergrad thesis.  I'll grant I'm not a fancy neuroscientist (drink!).  She might be a lot more likable if she didn't try so hard to let us know she's S-M-R-T.

I cannot believe ibid was a TS!  Did none of these people write papers in school?

Obviously no X-Files fanatics among them for cerulean as a four-syllable blue to be a TS (to this day, I cannot encounter that word without picturing Modell in the back of the squad car, talking about cerulean blue, in the "Pusher" episode).

I was terrible in TV themes; I'd never seen any of the shows, and only managed to come up with two via cultural osmosis (I should have also come up with Hawaii 5-0, given "stately" and knowing there was a reboot a while back, but I didn't in time).  It was not a good first round for me overall.  I missed another three in arts, plus two in last names, and one in "I"s.

I did okay in DJ, though; my only bad category was Sir Francis Bacon, in which I missed three.  I ran geography and got all but one in adjectives and dogs (that one was a pleasant surprise, as I'm not good with breeds).  I missed two each in movies and novels (that one was a fun category).

FJ took several moments to come to me - I initially thought Risk, since it has all the countries (I think; I've never actually played it, just know from Seinfeld it's "a game of world domination being played by two guys who can barely run their own lives"), but then thought of Life, and figured that was more likely what the quote referred to, in all its myopic inaccuracy.

Mattea's "My student loan is paid off" reaction to winning was special -- it was equal parts lovely (that she now has that ability) and sad (that so many Americans must saddle themselves with such debt in order to obtain higher education).

That was what the inventors/marketers of the game said about it, not disinterested parties, which, strangely enough, doesn't make it true!

Same here.

If there’s a clue about mobiles on Jeopardy, the answer is Calder. I actually yelled at the contestants, “Don’t you watch this show?!” (And honestly, while I’m sure there have been other mobile artists, I could not name another one. And I used to be an art major.)

FJ was an instaget for me. I just looked at the clue, asked myself what every person on earth has in common, and that’s being alive. So, The Game of Life. I didn’t think any deeper than that, and I don’t think the clue writers did either. The only thing I was uncertain of was the actual name. Both contestants said “Life”. I thought it was called “The Game of Life”. Am I wrong, or would that also have been acceptable?

I certainly wasn't saying that was the only way to know the response to the clue, just that any hardcore "X-Phile" would know it based on "Pusher" even if that was their only exposure to the word since the episode was so memorable, so clearly none of the contestants were obsessed with XF in the day as I was.

I remember the "You can be a winner at the game of life" commercials, and Wikipedia says the game was called Game of Life (itself a spin on an earlier version, The Checkered Game of Life), then The Game of Life, which became commonly referred to simply as Life (since "The Game of" was in smaller and less-colorful font than "Life" on the box).  So Game of Life, The Game of Life, and Life should have been equally acceptable.

Clearly I wasn't hardcore, though I was a fan. I don't remember this episode - at least by name, and cerulean doesn't connect with X-Files to me.

Unfortunately, I misheard the category and thought of 4 letters instead of 4 syllables - so Cyan is what I came up with.

I took that more as show jitters than not actually knowing he couldn't do it - after all, like most of us I'm sure he's watched the show forever and should be pretty familiar with the general game rules. Not to mention, he'd already played one game (though I can't recall if he got any of the daily doubles).

Not having been a contestant, I'd think they'd explain the rules to them again once they're waiting for a game.

It was a fairly decent game, I got most of the triple stumpers (ibid, yes, from my own dissertation so while she can be a bit annoying about her education, I could relate to her response).

I like the contestant who won. I'm looking forward to seeing her again tonight.

That depends on the tax situation in Canada and their reciprocal agreement  with the USA which I know nothing about.

In the UK there would be no tax to pay on any winnings from shows like this as well as from gaming winnings. As an example a UK taxpayer who let's just say plays poker & wins the WSOP would get the full amount  of say $6 million (last time I played it) while a US player would have to pay the full 30% as the USA has an agreement with the UK and the player would just get a form and an ITIN (or INIT, been a while) from said casino and pay zero tax.

I have won $4000 and a bit more a few times when I was still a UK tax payer and had to do that which is easy in Las Vegas but a pain in the ass at local casinos who don't usually see non US tax payers and have no idea what they're doing.

I think generally the host reminds the players that they can bet up to $1000 and as a regular watcher he may have (unintentionally) been waiting for that.

I don't know too much about Delaware, but I know the three largest cities are Dover, Newark, and Wilmington.

Wilmington is a pretty good sized city and is a center for the banking industry in the US because of the very favorable corporate tax laws, which is why I was surprised no one got it.  Dover is smallish for a city but is the capital of the state, so it's not surprising that someone answered it.  Newark is only slightly smaller than Dover WHEN college is in session but the permanent resident population is much lower; most people outside of the immediate area have never heard of Newark unless they or a relative attended the University of Delaware.  Maybe that was the case with Nell.  I'm still shocked that she'd heard of Newark, although Joe Biden's presidency is raising the profile of the state overall, I guess.  (FTR, I live next door in Cecil County, Maryland.  We tend to go to Delaware to avoid sales tax whenever possible.  And I worked in Newark for 11 years.)

1) As to the current popularity/coolness of D&D, anyone interested should Google "Critical Role" and "Critical Role Quickstarter Record." Mind blowing.

2) Ken has been completely consistent in following exactly what Alex did. Mayim still has that "deer caught in the headlights" look when it comes to what should be said when a contestant finds a DD. She's hosted enough shows by now that she should know what needs to be said. It's gotten annoying when the contestants have to tell her the rules.

Yes, a bibliography is the list of sources-"ibid" should be nowhere in sight.  If she followed APA (6th edition) there would not be any 'ibids' in sight either (of course she could have been following another format of which I have no knowledge).  However, it's comments like this ('my bibliography is full of ibids') that make me question quite a bit about her.  It's been clear this entire season that I don't care for her, but she just makes it so easy for me to not care for her (so is it really my fault?).

I was disappointed that her DD wager in single (tm Mayim) Jeopardy was so low. Even if it wasn’t a good category for her, both of her competitors were in the red, so even if she lost it all she’d be ahead. I would have bet it all. Yes, I’m very brave from my recliner lol

Wow.  Mattea was even more dominant in tonight's win than last night's; the others never got off the ground.

The adrenaline TS surprised me, as did confirmation (bias), Sir Walter Raleigh, transcontinental railroad and Stagecoach a bit.  I think my biggest surprise was the Lake Mead response to the Great Salt Lake clue; maybe he didn't think about it being a $200 clue and figured it had to be something less obvious (and thought Lake Mead was in Utah).

If not for the Magnificent Seven category, I'd have had one of my best games, but I missed all but one in that.  Other than that, I just missed two more in the first round, and I was on fire in DJ, getting all but three!

I initially guessed Liechtenstein for FJ, based on its location, but then realized that wouldn't have so many foreign nationals.  So then I thought it would be an island country, so as I headed out towards sea in my mental map of western Europe, I thought, "Oh - Monaco!"
