I got FJ.  Not saying I was comfindent in that, though. I thought it had been called the Bermuda Triangle since before the 1960s, but I may not fully have understood the clue.

I got the missed clues of Fortnight (guess) and Tuppence.

I ran the category of fashion which is a weird category for me to be running.

I was annoyed I didn't get L'Enfant because earlier this year I read a whole book about the planning and building of Washington.  And, embarrassingly Carnegie Hall would not come to my head. All I could do was say Juilliard.

The lymphoma TS was a doozy.  I was also surprised by doctor in that same category, but I think with that one they didn't read the clue carefully.  Charcoal also surprised me.

I missed two in games and one in rock art, but got everything else in the first round.  And I was on fire in DJ; I missed one new word (I'd never heard of hygge), one plan, and one in hall (I could not remember Carrie Nation's name), but got everything else.

I just stared at the TV for several moments when the FJ clue was revealed, and then "Oh!  The Bermuda Triangle!" popped into my head clear as day.

Iatrogenic was weird to me, because that is not how we use iatrogenic in common usage. Oxford's definition is much more in line with how we use the word:

Quote

relating to illness caused by medical examination or treatment.

I either use or hear the term iatrogenic at least once a day at work, and I would never have gotten that the clue was referring to something "caused by the act of a doctor".

I did at least get Bermuda Triangle easily.

Yesterday was my favorite kind of FJ, the kind you have to solve like a puzzle: Latin word for cow? Don’t know, but French is vache… take into consideration 2021 events… vache, vac… oh, vaccine/ vax! Antivaxxers, grr.

Today was my most hated kind of FJ, the kind where the wording of the clue totally confuses me: A menace off the southeastern Atlantic coast? Sounds like the Bermuda Triangle… but they’re looking for a “term”. The Bermuda Triangle is a location, not a term. “Gave this term it’s current use”? Huh? I don’t understand what they’re asking f— AND time’s up. Should have just answered “Bov”.

I was surprised they didn't accept malpractice for that one. I think doctor-caused problems and malpractice are close enough for it to count. I think the other players had the same confusion, and that's why neither of them rang in after Zhe's answer was ruled wrong.

That president category was hard, but it should have been easy. If you know the order of the presidents, and what number each is, picking the first and last names is a gimme, even if you don't know the person their name combination refers to.

But I sure didn't have their numbers all memorized, and I guess no one on the panel did, either.

It was a fun idea for a category, though.

Isn't the presidents' order (and numbers and dates) the kind of thing hard-core quizzers would memorize?

"Medical problem caused by the act of one of these" doesn't make any sense with "malpractice" as the "one of these"; "the act of this" would fit, but "the act of one of these" has to be the person committing the act.  Iatrogenic refers to an illness caused by medical examination or treatment, and the wording of the clue seeks the one committing the act causing that problem (which arguably could have been medical professionals in general, not just doctors), not the negligent activity.

You're allowed your original thought, but I'm curious why you find her annoying. I haven't noticed anything about her demeanor that people typically gripe about in contestants, other than possibly the fact that she often sounds uncertain about her answers.

I was nervous she would fall victim to the "four game curse" on Monday, but she came through with that "vax" answer. It's interesting that we seem to veer between really close games and huge runaways, though the former have been less frequent than the latter.

I thought I had a good night. I ran fashion, rock art, and game changers. I wonder if they would have accepted water lily for lily pad. Silly me knew they were lily pads, but the other words just flew out of my mouth. I got Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, charcoal, and had trouble figuring out FJ and went duh when the question was revealed.

Water lily was the accepted response. The contestant said lily, Ken asked her to be more specific, and she got to water lily. Pad was in the clue.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who had some trouble figuring out exactly what FJ was going for.  My first answer was Cuba, then I switched to global warming.  Bermuda Triangle never crossed my mind.

Otherwise I had a decent enough game.

I don't get Britbox but I may have to sign up, just to watch Why Didn't They Ask Evans.

I feel like malpractice/negligence are only a small fraction of all iatrogenic symptoms/illnesses. You can get an iatrogenic illness even without anybody doing anything wrong (and without a physician involvement - could be treatment by other members of the medical team).

I tried to come up with something that sounded threatening, so I eventually came up with "hurricane season?" 🤣

It was a pretty good game for me (based on improvement from my not so great games lately). I didn't run anything, but I answered a lot.

I kept yelling "Lymphoma!" - of course, it's well known to me since the son of a friend of ours had Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma (he's doing well now). So as soon as I saw Hodgkins, I had the answer.

I'm glad that they got all of the Agatha Christie clues in.  That was a category I would have rocked if I were on the show; I got the two Triple Stumpers, "Witness for the Prosecution" and "Tuppence.*"  I didn't know that there was a new version of "Why Didn't They Ask Evans" being made.  I'll have to make a point to watch it.

*I'm always glad to see clues (or anything) referencing Tommy and Tuppence.  They are my favorite Agatha Christie detectives, but they don't seem to be nearly as well known as her other characters like Poirot or Miss Marple.  They're basically the only Christie characters who age in something like real time.  In their first book, from the early 1920s, they're a young couple falling in love (they get engaged at the end).  In their final book, from the early 1970s, they are retired grandparents.

I am totally horrible with numbers, I've never been able to memorize more than my SSN and phone # and even that takes time. When my ex was in the Navy (and this was WAY before cell phones) I had to write our frequently changing ph# inside the flap of my purse. It also messed up my memorization of my SSN because I had to memorize -his- SSN for the Navy. When I moved in with my daughter a few years ago the new landline and my new cell #s were VERY similar and so I couldn't memorize either. Like I said before I got Richard E. Grant because of the picture. The numbers did nothing for me.

I got Tuppence thanks to Mary Poppins.  The other Christie clues were all about characters I knew (from seeing the films, not reading the books), but not that one.  So I just concentrated on "slang for a British coin", figured the character was not named Quid, and next thought of Tuppence, as in "Feed the birds, tuppence a bag", and thought that sounded good as a nickname, especially given the alliteration with Tommy.

Like the other person who I'm going to reply to said, the need to supplement answers with some personal tie in like "Thank goodness, I better have known that cause I do xyz". She also does the same thing Mayim does, like when in a category that nobody knows any answers to, she says something like "Ummm.....moving on" or something equivalent to the "uh, that just happened" type of humor that doesn't take any personal adding-on to make it into a joke. Also, I am guessing most users on this thread are older and hence don't have much exposure to them, but the girls who have facial piercings and that alternative look typically have something wrong with them mentally - not an insult per se, but it's common enough to make me have anticipatory annoyance whenever seeing one.

I'll sit at your feet and growl like an annoyed mutt whenever she's on screen haha. I'm from BC and it's extra weird when feeling some sort of national alliance with someone who lives 5000km away. Catching up from last night -- I had a brief bout of dyslexia and initially said "El Nino" for FJ, then re-read the clue.  Right.  Southeastern not southwestern.  Then I thought something to do with Cuba, but discarded that quickly and came to the correct response in the nick of time.

I also got the TS of lymphoma, charcoal, and Carrie Nation.

J!: Not a bad start…Ran Reign of Error and Household Initials, missed two Books and one each in the other three categories for 83% in the first round.

DJ: Not so good in DJ…missed two in half the categories and three in the other half (I'll let you do the math on that one, if you're so inclined), and got no TSes or DDs.

FJ: Nope.

TSes: 98(-pound weakling), DOS (for Dummies), and filigree

I also said the French and Indian War.

I got the missed clues of hand off, filigree, DOS, rabies, and John Cabot.

I knew as soon as I saw the category for FJ that I was unlikely to get it, and I was correct. I had no idea what war that might have been.  I could barely do the math to figure out when it might have been.

But I did get the TS of hand off, filigree, 98, DOS, a sandwich, The Celestine Prophecy, Eastern Shore, and rabies.

Man, I begged for the 64-crayon set with the sharpener, and I was just thrilled when I finally got it.  That was the best ever crayon set.

I actually laughed out loud at Mattea's "Porcelain Gorilla" story.

In my area, commonly when discussing ventilator-associated pneumonia (lung infection where bacteria enter via the endotracheal tube), and central line infection (longer IV line that goes into a large vein, that can also be a source of bacteria entering the bloodstream). Surgical site infections and adverse drug reactions (including allergic reactions) are also under the iatrogenic umbrella.

I am totally loving Mattea, love everything about her. It's refreshing to see someone (who appears to be) so young be so smart, all while being herself, just as Amy was being herself. I hope she continues to rock.

Plus Ken is cracking me up every episode, he has such off-the-cuff wit. He's just a natural at that job.

I also appreciate Mattea knowing what a Nova Scotia Duck Toller is. Raise your hands, readers, if you know .... yeah, that's what I thought. She kept that from being a TS. I was grossly disappointed when my friend in Lisbon had never heard of a Portuguese Podengo. So Mattea got an extra gold star for knowing a Toller.

Another win for Mattea despite no DD and an anemic FJ wager (if you're going to go for the win rather than the tie, go for it -- you don't have to bet it all, but jeez).  It's going to be interesting to see how far she goes.

When DOS was a TS, I could just hear Alex saying one of his "before your time" comments.

The rabies TS surprised me; I was so sure someone would guess that.  I was also a bit surprised no one knew/came up with handoff.

The MLK response for the Malcolm X clue was something.

I wish Ken's Lumbergh impression had been better, but "aliens love Liza Minnelli" was oddly funny.

I had a pretty meh first round; I only ran household and double letters, missing two each in books and movies and one each in number and reign (I should have run reign, but couldn't remember Ethelred's name; how one forgets a name like that, I do not know).

I was just okay in DJ; I only ran bats and I missed all but one in TV, but otherwise I just missed two in faith (too bad I don't get to counteract one of those misses with extra credit for knowing both Hitchens and Dawkins in the $2000 clue) and one each in the rest.

FJ was an instaguess that, upon further thought, seemed right.  Or as good as it was going to get, at any rate - war history is not my strong suit.  So it was good to get that right.

Of course Mattea can wager whatever she wants. I didn’t say it makes her a bad person, or even that it’s hurting her. Just that as a viewer, it frustrates me. She could be amassing so much more, and at no risk to returning when it’s a runaway. Wagering in those situations can be a sign of confidence, and I just wish she had a bit more. She’s a smart woman, and probably a great money manager. But as a player? Not so much fun for me to watch. YMMV, of course.
