My best friend's mom died of sepsis on Christmas Day and in 2019 I have known three people that also died of it; one of them had previously lost over 200 pounds and living a relatively healthy lifestyle, one was 28 and one was a high school friend who was almost 32. It is so damn serious and they usually don't catch it until it's too late. How scary for Whoopi.

It sounds like sepsis was found while Whoopi was being treated for pneumonia; if so, she is very lucky because sepsis is usually discovered "too late."

About 20 years ago my 73-year-old mom was hospitalized with pneumonia twice in 6 months and sent to one week of rehab in a nursing home following the second hospitalization. On her third day home from rehab I took her to a pre-op appt for cataract surgery. She started shivering there and they gave her a warmed blanket while they did the exam, mentioning that they didn't control the AC in their suite. The doctor's office and the hospital were on the same campus (Kaiser), they knew she was elderly, recently past pneumonia, just home from rehab, her BP was much lower than usual and she was the only one in the room shivering - but they didn't connect the dots.

Bam, 6 hours later, after losing consciousness, she was transported to the ER at the same hospital where she was twice recently treated, diagnosed with septic shock, respirated (although she had been DNR/no heroic measures for 5 years), organs failing and systems shutting down. Gah! She passed less than an hour after I ordered life support removed but wasn't officially pronounced until a doctor appeared after midnight so, technically, she died the day after my birthday instead of on my birthday.

Given the timeline, they said she probably picked up an infection in the nursing home - "Oh, we see it all the time like this, most likely from fecal material on something they touch, like a light switch or a toilet or faucet handle." (They assumed that because of the bacteria involved, I forget now which one it was. But they were pretty much ho-hum about all of it). The 2-patient bathroom in rehab wasn't as clean as my home so I went at it with Clorox wipes from my car when I checked her in but I had no idea that "OK, unpleasant" could be deadly. OMG, the GUILT!!!

Please, educate yourself in new situations, ask questions, insist on getting answers, use Google/whatever, be an informed advocate for your loved ones!

Whoopi is very fortunate to be recovering because she is borderline elderly and pneumonia compromises immunity. Sepsis is silent, swift and deadly. As much as she bugs me, I'm anxious to hear what all she shares when she returns.

I watch daily, and I don't remember Whoopi looking or acting sick before she left for medical reasons. Does anyone remember?

@suomi, I am so sad to hear about your mom. My mom was in a nursing home during recovery from surgery, and so was I. If I'm ever in that situation again, I will definitely remember your story and heed your advice.

When meghan talked about the "purity test," I had no idea what she meant. Neither did Joy,  so she asked. Meghan answered  something about AOC, and still made no sense. I watched again.

Here's what Meghan said:

"I would be interested to see what happens. Ideological purity, or beating trump. You have to trust me and abby, because  we're the ones who spend the most time in red states, and I'm telling you, if you go too far left, I'm telling you, and we want by the way, if trump wins, I want on repeat all the warnings (snaps fingers) we've  given."

So. What the fuck is she talking about? She thinks she is some "highly educated political analyst" but even when given the opportunity, she can't express coherently what her point is.

Since Meghan was wrong about the midterms I'm going to disregard her predictions about 2020.

She's the perfect example of someone who never listens, and instead just thinks about what they're going to say next.  If she would open up her ears (and her mind), she might actually learn something or at least hear a different point of view.  But her goal seems to be to share her infinite wisdom because she's convinced that she's truly more wise and knowledgeable than anyone else.  One of the reasons she looks like such a fool a lot of the time is because she's so attached to her own opinion that she misses actual facts.  She doesn't want to listen.  She wants to talk.  MM is the definition of self-absorbed.

Yes, she feels the need to interject herself into every topic, and overwhelmingly most of the time it's complete irrelevant.  All of us could do that in one way or another if we wanted to, but most of us are smart enough to know that it usually just stalls conversation, and is annoying besides.  Guests come on the show to talk about themselves, their lives, their movie, their book, their charity, whatever.  No one cares about Meghan's connection to what they're discussing, especially when it's something stupid that only serves to pull focus away from the guest and onto herself.

I have family members in the military, but I don't blurt that out every time someone brings up the topic.  Surprise, Meghan - Lots of people can say exactly the same thing.   Apparently she thinks every aspect of her life is just so darn special.  No need to bond with everyone who speaks, Meghan.  Just shut up and let other people talk.

When she pulled out the Liebermans card, I was angry.  She doesn't have the slightest idea of what it's like to be Jewish and to have a Jewish heritage, and she wouldn't even if she had 1000 Jewish friends.   What was the point?  It doesn't matter if she has Jewish friends.  Anyone can feel one way or the other about any issue.  It was a completely unnecessary and ignorant thing to say.

Totally agree x100000.

Another reason that Nutmeg is stupid and has somewhat memorized her talking points/blue card info, and therefore CANNOT veer from the script, plus neither is she capable of an original thought.

I've known a few (thankfully) people like Nutmeg who turn EVERY TOPIC back to themselves.  It's weird.

If she were considered by news sources as an "analyst, commentator, or pundint" of any stature, all of her errors and bad quotes would have been reported-reported-reported on CNN, MSNBC, BBC, PBS, etc.  Probably not Fox News.

In fairness, a lot of political analysts kind of suck at predicting.  So Meghan will probably fit right in.

I snicker whenever she calls herself an analyst. Whatever.

Really happy that Whoopi is recovering. I like her but not as a moderator. Love Joy. Still do a lot of FF.

I would take that as meaning you can't waver from the "message" and this is what's wrong with her.  Listening to another Viewpoint and compromising is not something she is capable of.

I had never heard the term "ideological purity" until this idiot said it.  But it sounded pretty ridiculous and reminded me of those ridiculous "purity rings" the Jonas Brothers used to go on about back in the day.  In this current environment, the word "purity" being used to describe something should make one's ears pop up and take notice because it usually is being used to describe something that's ... not a good thing.

Yes, she said she had "a cold" & she was fairly stuffed up & coughing a bit.  That's all I remember.

I take solace in that Nutmeg is being slammed, mocked, left and right outside of our little world on PTV.  It is just glorious, she is a joke.

Okay, back to Hemingway and RBM....Hemingway wrote very very very short sentences and paragraphs, that's all she can grasp. And even so, I'll bet you a hundred dollars she has never read that book or even seen the Spencer Tracy movie. She just likes Papa Hemingway because he loved his guns and booze.

She is finally getting the widespread attention she has always wanted.  Too bad it's attention for being the moronic know nothing shrew we all knew her to be.

Do we really believe Meghan reads Hemingway?

It was probably the last book she ever read (because she had to) in 9th grade.  Hemingway and his books were misogynistic and Meghan is a masochist, so I guess it makes sense. I was expecting her to pick Daddy's book or one of her co-hosts' books since she loves to feign having friends.

Assumed AOC stood for Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez.     The only thing I could discern from her nonsense  is that AOC is not your typical liberal hence not pure.   I have no idea...LOL.

I think she was trying to say that AOC's democratic socialism is the new pure ideology on the left.  Unless she was saying the opposite.

And Meghan threw in "no shade" after saying she and Abby know the most about red states. That's not shade, boo - that's just you assuming the other ladies don't visit nor spend time in red states, which, again, how the hell would Meghan and Abby even know?!

As someone who is older than they are it also bugs me they say this shit.  They are young, wealthy, protected and have lived in red bubbles.  They spoke to the people at the diners they may have stopped at to film their news report.   That isn't necessarily the pulse of the state.  Clinton got over 3 million more votes and he won by only 70K votes spread among 3 states.

Is it just me or does Nutti look more square these days?  Not nerdy but actually square as in the shape?  I hate to give her props but she dresses herself better than the wardrobe person who obviously loathes her.

Yeah, I'm not going to use her particular crystal ball. Has a red tinge that makes it inaccurate.

Meghan always talks of red states & blue states as if the difference is cut and dried. As a Canadian it confuses me because before 2000, different US TV stations used different colours at different times and for different things (once colour TV was widely available). Some used blue for incumbents of any party who won their state again. And the colour red has a long history of referring to commies, and blue to blue-bloods and royals. Reagan's win was a blue wave. Then in 2000 somebody decided red=Republican is easy to remember, despite the flipping of the colours.

She's a year younger than me (though I thought she was ~5 years older), but I do enjoy some "seniors" discounts for those over 55, 60 or 62, depending on the store.

It must depend on the age of the reporter. When I was 10 I thought 30 was middle aged and >60 elderly, but now I think of 50-60 as being middle-aged and only think of people as elderly if they are very frail, not people who are fit and spry at 70, 80 or 90.

I took my temper out on kitchen cupboard doors & any door I passed through on my way to a "quiet place" ... LOL.

My father dumped us when my sisters and I were young.  When we got a television, he seemed to show up on Friday nights for the fights.  He always brought beer; my mother didn't drink it.  We went to bed before he left and then the arguing started.  HE would argue while she was cleaning the kitchen.  She'd slam every cupboard door and drawer we had.  My sisters and I (Catholic school kids) would lie in bed and say Hail Marys (fast and furious) until we fell asleep.  I have no idea if my sisters grew up to do the same slamming; they each had husbands who might cause such a thing.  I was lucky.

She's hardly qualified to tell Democrats (or anyone) what they need to do in order to win.  I HATE when she goes on and on about that.  She's not a political strategist by any stretch of the imagination, and she's also nowhere near as smart or informed as she thinks she is.  She's a pompous ass.

It was actually discussed on these boards a while back, but whoopi's age is up for debate. It came to light a few times, once when her brother died. He was her younger brother, but when he died his age was reported as older than what whoopi claimed her age to be.
