Stinger97 March 8, 2019 Share March 8, 2019 (edited) Vanjie channeling Cookie Monster during the skit was everything. I was cackling on my couch the entire time. Similarly, Mercedes’ inability to pronounce “opulence” was also cracking my shit up. The Black Panther girls couldn’t hold a candle to the Get Out ladies. Silky didn’t bug as much this episode as she did during the premiere, but I wonder if that was more the editing and less her actually being less insufferable. I wasn’t sure about Yvie’s runway look at the outset, but I came to really like it. She basically married the Tin Man and Cowardly Lion into one look. She’s slowly becoming my one to watch. I also really adored the chemistry she had with Scarlet during the maxi challenge. Edited March 8, 2019 by Stinger97 8 Link to comment
Glade March 8, 2019 Share March 8, 2019 I know Ru is a reality tv producer, but for her to so transparently stir/talk shit to rile up the queens on-air is kind of undignified. I don't care for or about Silky no matter who is trying to force her storyline, she's getting my fast-forward button. It also felt so predictable as to be staged that Scarlet would make that 'delusional' comment, be picked last and then wind up winning. Hated the mini-challenge, which feels overdone. Mercedes story was powerful, though, I'm glad she stayed. Yet again the main challenge spends just as much time referencing Drag Race/past queens/plugging Dragcon as it does the movies it's supposedly parodying. I have no idea what the second movie is riffing--not Gone Girl as I first thought. Ariel, Scarlet, and Vanjie were incredible on the runway. As a Capricorn I thought Rajahs goat was interesting from the neck up, but the bland dress was a letdown (as many of Nina Bonina's looks were on her season, where her face was incredible but the outfits fell flat.) I wanted to like Yvie's look, but her face was too much of a mess for me. 3 Link to comment
Temperance March 8, 2019 Share March 8, 2019 Vanessa Vanjie Mateo's look with the scales was my favorite on the runway. She is a Libra herself (I looked it up), so @OhSayNow is probably right. Mercedes's stroke story was sad and feels worse coming on the heels of Luke Perry's tragic passing. I like Mercedes and I hope she does better in the competition. 3 Link to comment

ElectricBoogaloo March 8, 2019 Share March 8, 2019 I'm not a fan of the acting challenges in general because often the writing is subpar and 99% of the time, watching people botch their lines isn't amusing. I did love Michelle and Ross being unable to hold back their laughter while they were watching some of the scenes though. It's only the second week and we already have bitchy fighting. Great. Ra'Jah needs to get over the "I'm pretty so ugly girls can't come for me." I thought it was ridiculous that some people on Silky's team were acting shocked that Brook Lynn's team said Silky was extra. If I recall correctly, just about every queen said the same thing last week so it was disingenuous for them to pretend to be so scandalized. Brooke Lynn's pisces look was totally under the sea but in a good way. Plastique's aries look wasn't enough for me. I need more than a glorified leotard with accessories. Ra'Jah's capricorn look was both over the top (from the neck up) and lacking (from the neck down). She put all this effort into her hair and makeup and then she just wore a plain long dress. Even though Nina's leo look was simple in theory (flames on a black dress), it was very eye catching on the runway. She was great in the challenge too. I thought Honey Davenport's leo look was a cross between Diana Ross and the Cowardly Lion before she explained it, so A+ for executing her vision perfectly Shuga Cain's scorpio look was a little too Burning Man for me. The long red ribbon hair definitely didn't help dissuade me of that. My bigger problem was that nothing about that look said scorpio. Ha, Michelle gets points for the Jane Child reference. Luckily Shuga did really well in the challenge. She was so funny as Auntie Maxine. Ariel's lavender aries look was not the most flattering, which is not surprising since it was made of faux fur. Silky's capricorn look was not my favorite. I don't think a white body suit with a bunch of multicolored decorations evokes a capricorn. Yvie's leo look was exactly what she said it was - a digital version of a lion. Michelle's comment about it looking like Cats was right on. I enjoy how weird Yvie is. Vanessa's libra look was great. It had so much impact on the runway. It was one of my favorites this week. A'Keria's pisces look was a little too literal for my taste. It was a lycra dress with a giant fish across the front. Mercedes' sagittarius look was fine but I wanted a little more oomph. The black hair with the black top made everything kind of blend together. Her story about being on the no fly list and then having a stroke was so terrible. Kahanna's yellow aries look looked like a dress with horns. I know aries isn't the easiest sign to portray, but TRY HARDER. She gets full credit for not freaking out when she stepped on her skirt though. Scarlet's pisces look was pretty (and I'll never say no to bubbles) but something about it was a little too Halloween costume for me. Despite Kahanna's back tuck (which I think was a first for the show), Mercedes clearly won that lip sync. I don't mind a little tea in the workroom, but Ru getting one team to talk shit about Silky and then running straight to Silky to tell her what they'd said was just bad. DanielleC. March 8, 2019 Share March 8, 2019 IMO, one of the best episodes on the show recently! We had a funny acting challenge for once (yes, they were ups and downs but the script was funny and alot of them did great and even the bad ones like Kannah and Mercedes, I coudlnt stop laughing at them). Runway theme was great, alot great looks. I totally agree with top/winners and bottoms and yep, Mercedes was more in control of her lip sync while Kannaha was representing her journey on the show ´´potential, enerfetig but with alot visual flaws``. Gonna return later to share my opinions more on how each did. PS: Kudos for the producers to actually keep a suspense all the way on how the elimination would turn on. Like, at the very beginning of the episode, with Scarlett talking on how she would slay/ the queens would regret no choosing her, I was like ´´oh, this os one of those cliche edits of a queen bragging about herself at the beginning than landing in the bottom at the end``.Than were moments I thought Silk would be in the bottom, Brooke... By the end, watching the full product, I was sure it was Mercedes and Kahannah but for the edit, Mercedes would go home. Than she kinda turned in the lip sync. 2 Link to comment

Ananayel March 8, 2019 Share March 8, 2019 I'm enjoying this season a lot so far because to me, there isn't an enormous frontrunner who is just so far ahead of everyone else that there really isn't any suspense. Hi Bianca! And I'm not normally a fan of returnees (though it looks like that will continue to happen,) but I'm so glad Vanjie is back. I find her wildly entertaining, and hope she doesn't get sent to Drag Guantamano. 7 Link to comment

She's more fun personality than great drag for me at the moment, although her Libra roses costume was nice. Loved that 2-3 of the girls mentioned how uncomfortable they were in their runway looks because that's about all I can think about when I'm watching. Ow, ow, ow! (And that's without a pilonidal cyst.) It's a bit suspicious to me that Silky isn't getting called out by the judges, because her runways looks have been mediocre at best. I was sorry to lose pretty pretty boy Kahanna. Scarlet is also quite good looking but her thin-skinned pugnaciousness has not endeared her to me. Although some of my favorite queens of all time do it, the androgynous drag aesthetic can just seem lazy. Like, easier to quickly contour on some breasts than deal with the bras and padding. Blakeston March 8, 2019 Share March 8, 2019 The more I think about the runway, the more I think it was a bust. It was a great, great concept, but only maybe 3 of the 14 looks (Yvie's, Vanjie's and Scarlet's) really stood out to me. Maybe Brooke Lynn's, too. I would have loved it if they'd done this last season, to see what Aquaria, Monique, Asia or Miz Cracker would have done with it. Also, they were just really unfortunate with so many queens having the same sign, and so few having the more interesting ones. Three Aries, three Leos, and three Pisces, really? And then two Capricorns? There were way, way too many boring horns on that stage. And it's a real shame we didn't get to see what someone would have done with a Gemini, Aquarius, Virgo, Taurus or Cancer. 3 Link to comment

That's more what it was like in the first seasons, where there was a lot more sewing involved and often the queens were challenged to create outfits for the runway on the spot, with random fabric that was provided. I wish they still had challenges like that, though. I think making your own clothes is part of the history of drag and it was always entertaining and interesting to see what the contestants could come up with from scratch, no matter how much money they came into the show with. 7 minutes ago, Blakeston said: There were way, way too many boring horns on that stage. And it's a real shame we didn't get to see what someone would have done with a Gemini, Aquarius, Virgo, Taurus or Cancer. I agree. Maybe to give it more diversity and make it more challenging they should've had the queens pick signs from a box at random, so each one would have a different one. But I think the producers give the queen a list with the titles of all the runway categories of the season before they start filming, to make sure they can pack all their outfits beforehand, so that would've been impossible. I'm loving the season so far, I just wish, especially today, they would add more captions with the names of the queens, because I honestly can't recognize some of them yet and sometimes it was hard telling who was who, both in the photobombing and in the acting challenge. 8 Link to comment

My criteria in determining whether a team was successful in an acting challenge is, basically, if it made me laugh (whether for the right or wrong reasons). Obviously, Ru and her panel are using a different criteria to assess a team's success. A great example of that would be S6's acting challenge, Drag Race Me to Hell. There, Team Milk was objectively better than Team Adore. That said, I don't remember much from Team Milk's reel while my boyfriend and I *still* reference lines and moments from Team Adore's. Particularly Gia Gunn's stilted recitation of "Gag me with a Delorean!" line, Adore's wig slipping (several times) as she was electrocuted, and the 10 second silence/close up on Vivacious as she visibly struggled to remember her "Your mother scrubs docks in Hell!" line. To be fair, I think a lot of the hilarity came from the editors and the way they cut the available footage together for the final reel, but still. It was memorable! Long story short, I agree that the Black Panther ladies were objectively better at delivering their lines and selling their specific story. However, I thought the Get Out parody was funnier (albeit for all the wrong reasons). And in the grand scheme of things, I don't watch RPDR because I want to see seasoned actors honing their craft. I'm strictly here for the messiness and fun. Edited March 8, 2019 by Stinger97 1 Link to comment

It was very interesting to see some of the contestants ding Silky on using her size as an excuse and showed footage of her dissing skinny queens. I personally think a lot of big girls lean on the same uninteresting silhouettes for their runway looks and that the judges often seem to give them the benefit of the doubt. But it's also true that out of ~130 contestants so far, only two have ever made it to final three (Ginger/Eureka). Of course there have been far fewer queens of size than average-to-skinny ones. Looking through the list, it seems to work out to about two per season, not counting plumpish girls like Kim Chi. Rounding up to a total of 25 big girls in 10 seasons means that 8% of them made top three. Adding Kim Chi brings it to 12%. Seems like a case could be made that the judges are being overly harsh on bigger queens! Link to comment

There is much truth to what you write, but I still feel that many of the bigger girls stay on much longer than they would if they were smaller girls; their level of performance just doesn't come up to the level of the girls that are sent home before them. Of course, I may be reacting incorrectly due to my utter distaste for Eureka, whom I loathed, and may now be projecting that onto other larger queens. I'm a little biased because she's my hometown girl, but Mercedes slayed that lip-sync, no? She did all the acrobatic stuff when appropriate for the song, while Kahanna was doing a gymnastics routine out of nowhere. Her story about being on the no-fly list is why this show is still so important culturally, like last season when Dusty talked about conversion therapy. 8 Link to comment

Not what they could afford or who designed what for them. Speaking of Eureka, I feel she had the largest budget of any Queen ever on the show. Every single thing was custom made, and had to cost a bundle because they need 3x the normal amount of fabric to make a dress for her. Every Look seemed extremely high end. If you look at everything she wore, it was all custom made by someone good and had to cost a huge fortune. I am not still confused about some of who is who, I hate that1 Link to comment

rlc March 9, 2019 Share March 9, 2019 Way too many girls to do an acting challenge. I don’t even know who they all are yet! Surprised by how much I’m liking Vangie so far. Thought she’d be a one trick pony, but she’s got true charisma. Two weeks in and already tired of the way that Brooke Lynne paints. She’s going to have to switch things up because there’s nothing fresh going on there. On the fence about Yvie- like her looks so far, but looks like she’s going to insert herself into every damn drama. Silky isn’t the only one there seeking camera time. Scarlet has already worn out my last nerve. There was something about Mercedes and a stroke- was there anyone else there this week? Link to comment
Not4Me March 9, 2019 Share March 9, 2019 I’m surprised to not see any more love here for Plastique Tiara’s one-armed nail salon character in Black Panther, she really stole the show in the challenge. Take note Gia Gunn, this is how you portray an Asian nail salon personality while being funny and not offensive! Scarlet surprisingly did better than I thought, she had some good range. And I’m definitely feeling Shuga Cain as well. So far nobody has been super obnoxious, even Dr. Silky Nutmeg Ganache PhD took it down a notch. 9 Link to comment
dolphincorn March 9, 2019 Share March 9, 2019 So, I not only write astrology books, but I've been the astrologer for a few big magazines. This challenge was fun, but a bit of a letdown because not all of the signs were represented, and a few were poorly represented. Everything in astrology corresponds to colors, stones, flowers, etc., so I wonder if Vanjie knew that roses were a Libra flower because everything about that outfit was perfect. I've got a Drag Race Zodiac Dream Team feature on my astrology blog. It's right here if anyone is interested in reading it. 6 Link to comment

Here's what us old folks are talking about, kids: That was my favorite thing in the whole episode, just because I was...alive during that time and I would constantly hear Jane and Seduction on the same stations that spring. 4 Link to comment

Rosenrot March 10, 2019 Share March 10, 2019 (edited) I don't usually care much for the acting challenges - they can be fun, but the scripts are often awful and also I think it's a bit unfair that some of the contestants have big parts and some of them really small, because of course the judges are going to say "you faded into the background" or some such if you've only got two lines in the whole thing. (Of course you can still fuck up even if you've got a big part, though.) With that said, I enjoyed this week's challenge. The Get Out parody even got some chuckles out of me, and that's saying a lot! Vanjie's runway look was everything. I'm not sure what level I am with her yet, but she's growing on me. On 3/8/2019 at 2:21 PM, Mayberry said: It is noticeable more and more every season that the queens have to really have money to be in the comp, to get anywhere in the comp. The outfits are looking more expensive, that they hired and paid designers to make them. The show has definitely gotten more slick and commercial. For sure. Watching S2 simultaneously with S11 is like watching a different show altogether, and not just because the difference of quality in the outfit department is CRAZY HUGE. I'm having kind of mixed feelings about it. Back then it didn't feel so scripted, there was something homely about it, and Ru was... I don't know, nicer, maybe? But then again, I do enjoy the professionalism and the fact that I get to marvel some beautiful, well-crafted, imaginative costumes and looks. She's not even trying to cover it up. Edited March 10, 2019 by Rosenrot 2 Link to comment
2727 March 10, 2019 Share March 10, 2019 Speaking of how much it costs the queens to be on the show, I thought Michelle's comment to [whoever it was} about wearing the same boots twice was an entitled, snotty thing to say. 5 Link to comment
Blakeston March 10, 2019 Share March 10, 2019 (edited) I thought the Get Out parody was really interesting. It was a clever idea to make it about how certain straight people claim to love drag queens, but also fetishize them, and deep down are uncomfortable with them. I have no idea what they were going for with the "Uppelence! You own everything!" stuff, though. At the end of the day, I don't see either movie as being too serious to be parodied. If they'd done something like this with 12 Years a Slave, I'd feel differently. I also thought it was interesting that Silky said she wanted a team with all queens of color plus one white queen. That made a lot of sense for the sketch, because it highlighted Scarlet being an outsider. But did she really think that through when choosing her team? I have to wonder if she just wanted as many queens of color as possible, and then got stuck with Scarlet at the end. Edited March 10, 2019 by Blakeston 2 Link to comment
JakeyJokes March 10, 2019 Share March 10, 2019 Willam and Alaska have a great podcast and when they recapped S2, they noted that the girls were buying most of their outfits "off the rack", and also that's how drag kind of WAS back then. As the show evolved and elevated, so has drag. I rewatched S5 and found it fascinating that Detox could rock Thierry Muglier like a boss but faltered when she had to design her own look. 1 Link to comment

People I thought I would like (silky, rajah) I cant stand, people I thought would annoy me (Yvie) I love, people I thought would be interesting (Nina) are boring, and people I thought I would hate (Ariel, Plastique) seem pretty reasonable. The only one meeting my expectations is Vangie, at this point. I know, right? Tho I started liking Ariel from the start since she's from South Jersey. It takes a lot for me to notice anyone else when Vangie's onscreen, she just sparkles. I am still over the moon with Bobby Moynihan as a guest judge, you can always tell who true fans of the show are! Loved his appearance on Untucked too, work it Bobby, work, work! 3 Link to comment

Thanks for this. I listened to an ep today and loved it. Except for Willam’s tendency to say “something”100” whenever he agreed with something Alaska said, which I can stand because Willam. ladle March 17, 2019 Share March 17, 2019 I don't understand why Ru was *so* tickled by Plastique's stereotypical Asian accent in the acting challenge. Like, I'm not trying to be an overly-PC stick-in-the-mud; I get that it's technically "ok" if she's Asian-American. I just... didn't really think it was that funny. I wondered what I was missing. Still annoyed by Silky, but at least she was slightly muted in this episode. Mercedes turning it out in the lip sync almost brought tears to my eyes, but the SNL guy's amazed reactions to the sync made the whole episode for me. Link to comment
