Reminds me of a documentary I watched about Iran, the family left when their daughter was very young in order to give her a better life. I knew a girl that did this in the early 70s. Her parents had to send people over there to rescue her. They were not going to  let her come back. They saw a wife as like property.

I just looked on the dept of State website for the travel advisory. It says do not travel. There is very little consular assistance. You are basically on your own.

To be fair, she might just have her terminology mixed up. I used to work at a dental school. We had an undergrad (DMD) program and several post grad programs, all of the students are already dentists doing additional specialist training. So its not outside the realm of possibility that he is a dentist who is doing an Oral Surgery program.
