I'm sure she picked up her pronunciation of Samoa from her father, who is, after all, from Samoa.

I was puzzled by Kalani saying SAM-wah that sounded to me more like SOW-mwah because Asuelu said it in a TH in the way that I thought it was pronounced, Sam-oh-ah. Also, back in the 90s, I was working in production at a TV network sort of and there was a period in which a lot of the news investigative shows were all over these "treatment centers" for out of control teens that were really pretty brutal places. The kid would be jolted awake by his parents nad taken away to one of these places to be fixed. A few of them were in Samoa and I don't remember anyone pronouncing it differently than Sam-oh-ah.

The way Kalani says it makes me want to call it SHAMWOW.

I think the  pronunciation of the word Samoa has gone the way of the pronunciation of the word Neanderthal.  I remember watching some science specialist a couple of years ago and I was baffled because all of the scientists on the program pronounced the TH like a T.

It seems like we’re ALL saying Samoa incorrectly—us and Kailani. To be fair, I listened to this video linked (start 30 seconds in) several times and I still can’t get it. Apparently you need to elongate the first A, but it’s not really an extra syllable, nor is it really accented, either: Sahahmoh. Then again, the next sentence the chief seems to say SaMOah, so moral of the story, even the freakin chiefs of Samoa don’t know how to pronounce it, so there’s no hope for the rest of us!

With all of the sounds I have listened to online and the attempts here, none of them sound like the way Kalani pronounces it.

I was in Toronto and missed the live chat (thank you Canadians for your hospitality!) but I just wanted to say that the only thing I took away from this episode so far is that now we are supposed to procure Rice a Roni AND Samoa cookies for the watch party????????????   Where do I get girl scout cookies this time of year????

Do I even like Samwas????   Do they have coconut in them?   Do I have to cut them on the bias?

It was sweet of Olga to meet Steven at the train. They may actually have a chance to make it work. I thought he was a  dipshit at first but shockingly he got all the way to her hometown on his own and was happy and cheerful, unlike the others who are exhausted and crabby.

I also loved the way, as soon as he saw her, he dropped down to his knees and hugged her belly.

This boy may have just been severely misunderstood at home.

A 9-hour flight + a 7-hour train ride, and he shows up with a smile.  Boy is growing on me. (and he didn't demand flowers! lol)

I hope he just needed this kick in the pants to grow up. He and Olga seem like they’ve had difficult lives so far, a baby that is depending on them and that they want a better life for might be the key.

It would be sad if he loses interest or can’t handle the responsibility and flakes.

I think I’m going to whip up some Traditional American breakfast burritos for tonight, making sure to cut them on the bias, and eat an entire cake (no plate necessary) as dessert.

Had to clarify these are BREAKFAST burritos. And btw, they are so American, I’ve never even had one...

I've been to Philly many times.  I'm a 5'3" female, and I eat my own cheese steak, plus a bag of Salt & Vinegar chips, plus a drink.  If anyone tried to share it with me, I'd smack them.

What is this “sharing” crap?  I don’t go for that... nor do I subscribe to the “ save me a bite”  club.. ‘Get your own damn food!!!!

I want to like this many times!  I cannot stand when people grab for my food!

And I'd be so pissed if I traveled across the world, and 40 year-old 50 year-old cheap-o brought one sandwich for the entire table.

Rice a Roni is on sale 3 for $3 this week. Will be heading to the market for tonight's eating habit.

PS: This live chatting every week has been SO good for me and my recovery. I look so forward to it and that's lovely when you are trapped inside all the time.

I could not  deal with that.  I’d go get my own.

Regarding eating out:

I do not want to save anyone a bite... the last bite is the best bite, why do I want to give it to someone else?  I don’t want to “buy the 12 inch sub and split it with you” . And finally .....YES , I am going to finish that!!!!

Just watched the first look and nearly vomited when I saw Baraboob open up a sandwich for four people to share with no plates, knives, forks, etc. Aside from the get your own damn sandwich, if you are going to share it to see if the others like it or if it's just a quick snack in between lunch and dinner, the idea that multiple hands would be all over that sandwich, ripping it up and eating it makes my skin crawl.

Have I mentioned that I dislike Aseulo’s voice?  Every time I see it in that commercial startles me; it’s way too high-pitched for big Samoan guy.

Did they even wash their hands? Pass around hand sanitizer?? Gross.

I know what you mean and when they show him saying "Kalani's family doesn't like me" they edited it so they are only showing him mid sentence where his voice is rising so it's really high.
