I have a feeling SNL was too ignorant to predict that Black Panther would make more than 1 billion dollars at the box office. This movie was hugely underestimated by a lot of people in the film industry. Some people expected audiences overseas, like the Chinese market, to be racist towards the movie, but the exact opposite ended up happening. This film blew everyone away, and I expect that SNL was just late on the trend. You can see that SNL does not announce hosts well in advance --- these days they actually ask people on Twitter to tell them who should host. I'm not joking, a couple of years ago SNL tweeted out "Who should host the show?" and I replied that Dave Chappelle and Larry David should host. They were my *DREAM* hosts. I didn't expect that the show would actually listen, but lo and behold they were announced as hosts later that year. For example, Sterling K. Brown was the last host I believe, but I think SNL asked him because of the This is Us hype, not the Black Panther hype. I didn't think they knew what BP would become. Whether or not anyone believed in the amazing success of black panther, it was poised to make 150 million opening weekend a month out from it's release opening weekend. Oh and it's a marvel movie. So, it was always going to be big. There is no reason for them not to book the star of the movie in that regard. But, he was probably to busy to settle in for a week long investment like this. He's still having to run around doing stuff now for the movie. And He's one of focal points for infinity war now which comes out in a few weeks. So they got the star of the biggest films this year right in between their openings. Not even really a bad strategy. Also, damn near everyone took time off for the Olympics which is when the movie opened. Oh and after reading critics in China talk about black panther, people were not wrong about China's issues with black people and black panther made basically the same international and domestic which is rare for a billion dollar open. It has to make more here to compensate for certain other countries. It should still stop people from saying black people can't sell overseas. But, there is something to saying it's harder. At least, in some places. 4 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/68270-s43e17-chadwick-boseman-cardi-b/page/2/#findComment-4218433

ChromaKelly April 9, 2018 Share April 9, 2018 I liked the episode more than most, going by the posts. The only thing that didn't land at all for me was the firefighter sketch. I didn't really get if the "squirting" was supposed to be funny or what. The Disney Princess mirror with R. Kelly was so random it cracked me up. I agree with the previous poster who said Chadwick as R. Kelly can show up any time! The leggings commercial had me dying. I can't stand Cardi B - I just don't like her voice and I really don't get her. I thought Weekend Update was good and I continue to like the way Colin and Michael work together. 5 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/68270-s43e17-chadwick-boseman-cardi-b/page/2/#findComment-4219532

And the Tom Hanks one was okay because it had some interesting political commentary. But in general it has some icky overtones that I don’t like, like in its “prizes.” Racist and classist. Some people put their leftovers in margarine tubs because they don’t have money for Tupperware. Comedy should punch upward. I didn’t like much about this episode except the restaurant sketch because it made fun of corny singing groups like Manhattan Transfer. I knew where Girlfriend/Wife of Every Boxer in a Boxer Movie was going (to her sister’s!) but I loved going there anyway. Uesta be Margarine was hilarious in my mind. For three generations, this Greek and Italian household, both side use re-purposed food containers. Hanahope April 11, 2018 Share April 11, 2018 I liked the episode a lot. Pretty much only the firefighter bit fell flat with me, I just didn't get anything funny about it. The restaurant bit was only slightly better. Also didn't really care for the Aidy gangsta. I get that its a whole 'you weren't expecting that' bit, but it still wasn't very funny. Pregnant Man was ok, it was mostly funny seeing everyone's expression after tuliping. Black Jeopardy was hilarious. Its one of the best bits they have, when they get the right people on it. I loved it with Tom Hanks too. T'Challa getting it finally was great. DACA, Cold Open (love the trump roasts), WU and guests, and Wakanda, oh and Leggings, hahaha. Disney princess took a bit, only because I don't really know the backstory of R. Kelly, but it was simply funny that he showed up in a disness princess mirror. I haven't been a fan of most of the musical guests, but this gives me the time to go to the bathroom and get a snack. (streaming doesn't always allow for fast forwarding). 2 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/68270-s43e17-chadwick-boseman-cardi-b/page/2/#findComment-4225545

I hadn't seen any video of Trump with the leaders of the Baltic countries, and now I want to google to see what the real people look like. I still like Alec as Trump. I got a big giggle out of him saying that they were slapping more tariffs on Chinese products like fireworks and finger-traps. The monologue was ok. Chadwick was good. I didn't mind his outfit. The Nike legging commercial was funny. Black Jeopardy was good. T'Challa was great. The first pregnant man sketch wasn't as funny as it might have been. Or I guess it was just a one-joke sketch. The "tuliping" gesture was funny. Aidy calling on one of the reporters with, "The woman in the wrinkled skirt," was the other joke. The fire sketch was a bomb. I think they expected more laughs (or any laughs) whenever Chadwick said he had "squirted" the fire. Although I like him, he wasn't funny in this sketch. I loved the Game of Life, DACA Edition. I bet the props department had a great time creating that. Cardi B. Not a fan. I listened to a minute or so of the first song, then FF'd. I didn't listen to the second.
