Alrighty. On the one hand we have Gretchen and Meghan saying it’s perfectly fine for young women (students, since it’s for scholarship, right?) to strut around in swimsuits and be exploited, and on the other hand abhoring the exploitation and abuse of the women athletes at MSU.  Anyone else see a problem here?

(Incidentally, my son works at the NCAA and says they are being inundated with angry phone calls.)

Not really, MM qualified her remarks, with' as long as they allow plus size women'. I've said that for years. But I've never understood these pageants at all. To me they're  right up there with the Victoria Secret show.  However if women want to go on, and win a scholarship, pay off loans etc, what's the difference between that and those that are part time strippers

I haven't been able to watch the entire show today, but during the last few minutes, MM said she knows "thousands" of Trump supporters. LMAO. I just don't get why she feels the need to say things like this and the hyperbole makes it worse. "Thousands" ?! Whatever you say, Meghan.

Because more than a thousand voted for him, and more than that still think he's doing a good job.At least that's what I took it to mean.

So happy to see Joy as moderator today! I found the discussion about pageants quite fascinating. I didn't realize it was all volunteers.

Instead of bathing suits, I think it should be 'fitness'. Show your physical fitness. You don't need bathing suits, just athletic wear. And smarter questions.

Oh MM, mentioned father (check) 33 (check) just got married (check). Sigh.

I'm sorry, but IMAGINE the  response if, at the next Miss America pageant there was one actual plus-size competitor.  (and, no, Meghan, size 12-14 is NOT plus-size!)   Imagine the tv audience response if, among all the size 0-2 models, there was a woman who was twice the size of any of them - and in a swimsuit.   Sorry, no, that would not play well on TV.  women can beautiful at any size, but why must it be a competition?

I keep thinking of the movie "Miss Congeniality", and Candice Bergen insisting,  "It's not a beauty pageant! it's a scholarship program!"

I guess we all have different experiences, but my point was I didn't like the women on The View encouraging everyone to have a mammogram, and then exclaiming how terrible the process is, which just causes alarm and possibly delay in having  one. Mine resulted in several biopsies and surgery, and though that was unpleasant too, I'm grateful that they caught my cancer (which was very difficult to detect, as it wasn't a lump but linear in shape).

I think what I'd rather hear (and I have mammograms) is that it is uncomfortable, but it's brief and the discomfort has an end. It's kind of how I would talk to my kids before vaccinations. Yes it hurts, but you're miserable for a lot longer (and possibly even dead) if you get the flu, meningitis, etc.

I didn't know him, but really, this abuse has to stop, male and female!

Isn't that her natural colour? Have you ever seen dark roots? I never have, and I keep looking...because my hair is very light, and I could do without dark roots :)

Are you really young? Not to be personal -- but with rare exceptions (and I'm not counting people with Albinism), there are seldom really blonde blondes after the mid-teens. You might be one, I don't know, but it's really unusual.

Meghan's dye job is pretty obvious to me. Children who have hair that light -- there's a whole different tone to the color. I'm surprised with her money that she doesn't get a better dye job.

I think the sexism is inherent in that scholarships are awarded to women based on them competing with other women on physical appearance.  Men do not get scholarships for being handsome.

That's true, or my boys would be going to the schools of their choice, for free. They'd even make a profit! </mom >

I swear Meghan just loves to hear herself talk and has she gotten faster and faster as she speaks?? Anyone notice?

Yes, because I zone out and don't listen to her, so I don't get so mad. It's just like bees buzzing now.

Hey everyone, about the Billy Bush conversation on today's episode... I thought the show was going to go here today, and Sunny almost did, but didn't.

They did get to the point about how Billy Bush lost his job, but Trump went on to take the electoral college. Someone (Meghan, maybe) even mentioned that he was in the position of a celebrity handler (she might have even said "fluffer"). And they rightly pointed out how gross it was that he played up to Trump by pressuring Arianne Zucker to give Trump a hug, etc.

But then it all went to hell, because Gretchen Carlson said something along the lines of, "Imagine if Billy Bush had just stood up to Trump at the time. That would have put an end to it all." That seems optimistic to the point out being totally out of touch.

Just because Bush played along with the sexism doesn't mean he wasn't also a victim of institutionalized sexism, even as he played into it. Please bear with me as spew this all out...

1. It wouldn't have put an end to it, GRETCHEN, because most importantly, Trump had already grabbed women without their consent, according to his own words.

2. It wouldn't have put an end to it, GRETCHEN, because if Billy Bush -- celebrity handler for Access Hollywood (an NBCU property) -- had stood up to Trump -- NBCU's big reality star, thanks to The Apprentice -- Billy Bush would have been fired in 2005 (or whenever) for not doing his job. His job then was to show the Access Hollywood guest a good time as he did this appearance for them.

I suppose if Bush stood up and then got fired, then came out with why (if he could, depending on his contract), maybe it could have changed some things, but I kind of doubt it. Now, if this happened this year and he came out this year, that might have changed everything. I don't think it would have changed shit in 2005.

Billy Bush was wrong to laugh along with Trump, and he was WAY wrong to work on Zucker to suck up to Trump, but if he had acted differently, Trump still would have gone on his piggy way, and Bush would have lost his job 11 years earlier, and would have probably had a hard time getting hired anyone else.

I hate what Bush did, but I have always felt like he was just playing his role in the sexist system, and that not one of these women at the table on The View today managed to point that out really set my teeth on edge.

I understand that but then she mentioned something about her friends wearing MAGA hats to barbecues - I can't remember verbatim what she said but I took it as her meaning that she personally knows all these Trump supporters. That's fine but who says stuff like that in everyday conversation? "I know thousands of people who like x, y, z!" It just sounds silly.

Hmmm.  The strangest thing occurred this morning.  I turned on ABC to watch The View - but my TV apparently tuned itself to some mystery channel which was airing The Meghan McCain Show!  Funny how that happened.  Every once in awhile I heard a familiar voice trying to jump in, but mostly what I saw and heard was Elsa going, "Blah blah blah, my father, blah blah blah, conservative blah blah, let me say, blah blah blah".

I couldn't take it anymore and switched the channel.  I don't think that's what TPTB had in mind when they hired MM, but that's what happening -- in this house anyway.

I agree, she didnt. I don't know half these guests or co-hosts, at one time I knew( nearly everyone)  everyone..

It was hilarious to me because the first time I heard that word used (decades ago) it referred to a person whose job it was to keep a male porn star "interested."   It's used for other things now, but I somehow always reminisce.......................

My high school english teacher was a former Miss Maine.  She would have won the title in the late 60's early 70's.  My friends and I had so many questions about what it was like to be in the Miss America pageant in particular having to be on stage and tv wearing a bathing suit.  Her answer has always stayed with me.  She told us that her family had 5 children and was very poor.  Because of this her parents could only afford to put her 2 brothers through college.  Educating the boys was a priority because they would need to have a career to support their families.  It was such a priority that the money she earned from babysitting and after school job was put in the boy's education fund.  There was no money for her to go to college.  Her parents did not think the girls needed college because they would just find husbands and raise their children.  She said she entered the pageant to get scholarship money for her education.  She told us that the swimsuit portion of the competition was a nightmare for her.  In the local pageants some of the judges were really perverse and would say and do things, like bringing their own tape measure to "confirm" the contestants' measurements for themselves.  It was out of her desperation for and education that she "resorted to parading around in a swimsuit".  She was grateful for the scholarship money and she did succeed in college, however, she also thought that young women should not have to put themselves on display in order to earn that money for school.  She thought that since it is a scholarship program the swimsuit competition should be replaced by an essay competition so the contestants can show their intelligence and not their physical assets.  After answering our questions, she asked if we wanted to know anything else about Miss America.  When we told her that we were good, she smiled and requested that we put it to rest and concentrate on our studies.

I like MM's hair better when she wears it down, rather than pulled up or back like today. When it's down, she can't seem to stop touching it.  But then Sunny seems to touch her hair a lot too. As well, so was Ann Curry yesterday. You'd think being on TV they would have been told by now how distracting it is for the viewers.

About her hair colour, I Googled and found https://www.thedailybeast.com/yes-i-wear-fake-hair written by MM where she both states she had Marcia Brady hair as a child, and that she's been wearing extension since high school.  So the colour may be mostly natural, but likely not all of the hair is.

The sad thing is that before a contestant gets to the Miss America pageant, she has competed in innumerable small (teeny) contests in her home town and beyond.  She may even have been Miss Pet Festival before she got to the city, county, and state competitions.  She has to acrylic nails her way to the top sometimes 7-8 times.  Along the way, there are judges that "cannot abide a chubby girl."  All of that said, IF there ever were a plus-size competitor, there would be A LOT of publicity...a lot!   Any of the unusual contestants have had a lot of pre-competition PR.  Lost a lot of weight.  Deafness.  Autism (truly!).   A prosthetic forearm.

I think beauty pageants are an anachronism (just like debutante balls) and that Gretchen is fighting a losing battle in trying to bring relevance and interest back to the Miss America contest. Just like Mad Men, the pageant harkens back to a different era. Good riddance IMO. Thank goodness we've evolved.

I'm a day or so late, but an observation:  whoopi, talking about the Oscars, and answering Sunny's question about whether the sex scandals will have an impact:

  • " we'll see.  It's very hard, and this is just my opinion, but it's very hard to give people what they want immediately, when you  have so many people involved in an industry, because you got to figure out who is what.  What you don't want to do is throw the baby out with the bathwater.  You want to make sure that the people you're getting, are the people  that need to be got."

And the other hosts nod in agreement, as though she not only made sense, but said something profound.  the same thing happens a lot.

It's just an example of whoopi's vague, incoherent style of expressing herself.  I'm sure I'll come up with more over time.

Oddly enough, I was okay with this vagueness because it's about Whoopi's profession. I was more annoyed when she interrupted Sunny about why Evangelicals still support Trump. Sunny was saying how from a religious standpoint it hypocritical, since Trump has been divorced many times, had affairs, and doesn't act like a man of God. But then Whoopi kept hollering about how only God can judge and stuff.

It had nothing to do with the point Sunny was making or the topic. God can judge, sure, but if you are claiming the moral high ground and believe certain things are the truth then you can't claim you support Trump since he goes against everything you stand for.

I not only didn't watch, I forgot to watch and/or record today's episode on my DVR. I think that means I win.  Still, I'm with ^ her. Details, please.

The night of MM's wedding a piece of advice Sippy offered to her friend was to have a lot of sex.  Sippy then told viewers that she shared a cabin with MM and her husband which made MM exclaim "It was an accident we thought you were....". The show went to break before she could finish what she was saying. When they came back for the last couple minutes of the show Joy said that she wanted to clarify that MM said she's never had sex in front of other people and then said that according to Sippy MM is extremely loud in the bedroom. MM had her face covered, head down and exclaimed "That's not true!" while laughing and you could see her whole body getting pinker from embarrassment. That's when Joy said that she hoped that Cindy McCain was watching which made MM turn a darker shade of pink and as the show faded out it looked like she was putting her head down on the table while laughing.

I hope someone uploads a clip onto Twiiter or YouTube because it was all really funny and it was great to see MM get a bit of her own medicine when it comes to making people squirm. I went back on my DVR and did my best to type out what was said word for word with the help of closed captioning since it was hard to hear with all the laughing going on. Paula's face during most of it was comical too.

I'm sorry but come on. So yesterday Joy and everyone was attacking pageants as being sexist and everything, but today when talking about the porn star who had an affair with Trump, it's I'm not judging those people. A woman can do that if she wants, no judgement here, if she is a porn star.

So we are now being MORE critical of a woman's choice to be in a beauty pageant then we are about a woman's choice of being a porn star?

i think the criticism was not women who participate in pageants, it was about having to strut onstage in a swimsuit and heels in a "scholarship competition."

I wish someone asked Sunny if Trump's people can sue Stormy for doing interviews like this. If she's not allowed to talk and she's being asked these questions, then it's insinuating something and can be seen as another way of talking. I suppose if she gets sued then it would add more flame to the fire, but I do wonder if it's possible. Unfortunately no one asked.

I wonder why SE Cupp wasn't at the table when the gymnast was speaking. Not that they needed her, but it seemed weird that they kicked her out for that interview and had her in for everything else.

The end was funny with MM turning red. She covered her face, but her scalp was getting pinker and pinker as they continued to talk about her cabin escapades.

Room, they can't have everyone around the table. Someone always steps away. SE Cupp was a pleasant surprise, I liked her.

Aly Raisman was so brave, as were all the other women that spoke out. I truly didn't think it was at all necessary for Sunny to say sexual predators don't do well in jail ( like the audience doesn't know that) , then ask Aly how she felt, come on, show some class!

I wish Aly had been on, without bringing up the prostitute again. If it's true about Stormy, she wasn't abused, Aly was, and lines are blurred.I honestly think having Stormy do an interview where she can't speak, isn't an interview at all. At least thats what it looked like. Joy, have her on, do you really think she would say anymore to you, sheesh! Talk about delusional..

I agree.  It was a perfect example of someone who is capable of intelligent conversation vs. someone who is not.

Ana is articulate, can hold her own, and has the ability to express her opinions and become emotional without turning into a nasty, childish shrew.  MM could learn quite a lot from her, but her mind is closed and I'm sure she's not open to learning anything from anyone.
