I got Anzac as well.  Should've gotten Uncle Henry but didn't, and am deeply ashamed as a huge fan of the original Star Wars trilogy to not have gotten Uncle Owen.

As soon as I realized what the category was, I could hear Luke whining "Uncle Oweeeeen" ;) So I was well prepared for that clue!

I have never heard of any sort of tuna casserole. I also don't eat any seafood, so maybe that is why?

I did not have a chance to see FJ, I only heard it, so I am wondering if that’s why I could not make head nor tail of what Alex was saying.

Maybe those of you who played can answer this, because I do imagine that once you wait your turn and then actually get up there it’s nerve-wracking, but Gerard and Adrianne were so damn poky it was driving me nuts.  Like, you can SEE the categories!  Why are you pausing and saying “uhh...” before choosing?

FJ could not have been easier unless they'd just said, "Write 'What is New Siberia?'"

I would have been fine if none of these people had won.  Between Rachel and Adrienne's swaying, and Gerard and Adrienne's pokiness, I was done with them before the first commercial break.  But I suffered through it all, and managed to get some TS/missed DD, including the plague, Die Fledermaus, Marilyn Horne, and ballast.  I haven't ever actually changed the ballast in a fluorescent light, but I've seen it done many many times.

I didn't think of Adrienne as especially slow, but Gerard drove me nuts for that reason. If he had won, we would not only have had to put up with his slow play but with Alex's overpronunciation of his name.

I got vichyssoise, Die Fledermaus, the Coast Guard, and Marilyn Horne. I thought Adrienne said "Marion Horne," which was really close considering she made it sound like a random guess. FJ was so easy I wondered if it was a trick question.

Can someone explain the "holy grenade" part of the clue in the Antioch question? I know they were going for a contrast between ancient and modern weapons, but I wondered if there was more to it.

Did anyone understand the discussion between AT and Gerard during the interview portion regarding AT's pronounciation of Gerard's name? I sort of got an impression that off camera Gerard may have corrected AT since during the introductions, AT frenchified it. I know I get pissed when people mispronounce my name. But their comments to each other were unclear to me.

I got my office's version of the "super flu" on Fri so I got two eps of Jeopardy! today.

I was sorry to see Lee go. That class he's teaching sounds amazing. Too bad he was unseated by Alex' new "young lady" crush. I'll hold on judging Rachel until I see how sickening the crush gets. I am however happy she held off Adrienne for the win. From their first responses I knew the combo of Adrianne and Gerard wouldn’t clear both boards.

For today's TS I got Perfume (one of my fave books) and vichychoisse.

Seriously! What was with that convoluted mess of a question?

And why is it sometimes a full name is required and sometimes it's not? I'm thinking of Marilyn Horne. I'd prefer full names for all but they just aren't consistent.

Spunky, I got the drift that Gerard corrected Alex's STOOPID intro pronunciation of his name as it isn't French, which AT made it, but Anglican, which I THINK is what he said. I wasn't listening that closely so sort of missed it. I thought AT was a real jackass for pronouncing it any way but straight. He also jacked with Adrienne's name. He's such a tool. (Now that he's recovered from surgery, I can say that.) I got perfume, vichyssoise (vishy-swah) and laughed when Trebek wanted BMS for Horne. Any other time, last name's okay. Also: Shout out to Outlander, my favorite book series, historical porn! And yeah, FJ was a $100 clue on par with Friday's Ottawa. I missed any other TSs as my dogs ALWAYS want to go out during this show.

Adrienne could have benefited from a sports bra with all the bobbing and weaving she was doing. I hope she has one for those half marathons.

In between bites of my leftover TNC, I got vichyssoise and Die Fledermaus. FJ was just too easy. One would not even have to know any Russian to figure that one out. Too bad the man in the middle couldn’t come up with Gretl, if he came up with Hansel, surely he’d know to add Gretl too. And too bad we didn’t get to see the rest of the furniture category, I would’ve liked that one.

I got Perfume (excellent book, btw), Knights Hospitalers, and Die Fledermaus.

The Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch was from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Ah, thank you. I've never seen Monty Python and the Holy Grail because I figured I've already had the classic bits quoted at me a hundred times.

Another Holy Grail quote for you, then!

A Reading from the Book of Armaments, Chapter 4, Verses 16 to 20:

Then did he raise on high the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch, saying, "Bless this, O Lord, that with it thou mayst blow thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy." And the people did rejoice and did feast upon the lambs and toads and tree-sloths and fruit-bats and orangutans and breakfast cereals ... Now did the Lord say, "First thou pullest the Holy Pin. Then thou must count to three. Three shall be the number of the counting and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither shalt thou count two, excepting that thou then proceedeth to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the number of the counting, be reached, then lobbest thou the Holy Hand Grenade in the direction of thine foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it."

Gerard was so slow, but was it my imagination or did he speed up a bit as time went on? Or did I just get used to it? I liked Adrianne, and I agree with whoever upthread said that Rachel was acting too cutesy Monday. Her deportment was definitely more girlish than I remembered from Friday.

TS I got were vichyssoise, Perfume, the plague, Hansel & Gretel(Gerard's missed DD. I thought Gerard looked confused; he either totally blanked on Gretel, or didn't understand what Alex was looking for).

FJ was very easy to figure out.

Looking at the word helped me to figure it out. Not sure I would have been able to otherwise, TBH.

Because the last name was part of the clue, I think.

I don't think it was. The clue mentioned the mezzo being no relation to Lena, but I do not think it gave their last name. But the judging is all over the place. Would Carson alone be acceptable if the clue specified no relation to Kit?

Her first name was part of the clue. "No relation to Lena, this mezzo made her La Scala debut in 1969."

Since "new" was in the clue, I would have just wrote "Siberia". I had a hard time figuring out what they were asking.

I was baffled for a bit myself, but I got it. It would been a little easier to parse had they specified translates to this two word city: the 1st word.....

Got those too along with the plague (6 letter medieval death) and Hansel and Gretel.

Yep, that's it -- it was the first name.  I wonder if Marilyn Horne felt bad that no one recognized her, even with the photo and the last name being something most people (of a certain age) would know.

I spent way too much time trying to figure out that "You gotta stand for something" would require knowing the meaning of some fairly obscure initials.   The contestants are answering and I'm thinking "What does that clue have to do with courage, or civil disobedience ?"

I'm glad to see others had a problem with FJ. I read the clue three times and couldn't figure out what they were asking for.

The contestant on the end seemed like a nice person, but her swaying was making me seasick. I like the new champ, which means she'll probably lose today.

I can't remember anything else about the episode, except thinking they're really doing a good job getting contestants of color, but I'm still waiting for my phone to ring. I also remember getting FJ instantly, but I don't recall how it was worded.

From thejeopardyfan.com:

"Novosibirsk, the 3rd-largest city in Russia, translates as this “city”: the 1st word for its more recent founding, the 2nd for its location."

My line of thinking was this:  Novo plus "1st word" plus "more recent founding" = new, and sibirsk plus "2nd" plus  "location" = Siberia because the clue specifies in Russia and sibirsk kind of sounds like Siberia, thus New Siberia.

There was only one reasonable answer, but what gave me pause was their putting the word "city" in quotes--why did they do that?  It's a city, isn't it?  So all the scare quotes do is confuse people unnecessarily.  Those writers really need a good editor.  I could make myself available.  Riding crop optional.

City was in quotes because the name actual translates to "New Siberia City," but only "New Siberia" was needed for the answer.

I was trying to think of a way to ask a similar question that would relate to states with cities named after them -- Kansas City, New York City, Jersey City, Texas City, Oklahoma City.  But then I learned that there are A LOT and not all of them are obvious.  The bigger question would be to name a state that doesn't have a city named after it -- Alaska, Connecticut, Hawaii, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan.  But then again, there are a handful of options.  Heck, I don't know...I'm rambling.

But anyway, it's New Siberia City.

I found the Wikipedia list (here) of cities named for their state; what was interesting is how many of them no longer exist. Then I started wondering about cities named for a state that isn't where they're located--i.e. there's a Kansas City, Missouri, as well as one in Kansas. Are there enough for a Jeopardy category?

Possibly.  There's also Virginia City, Nevada and Nevada City, California, as well as a Michigan City in both Indiana and Mississippi.  Oddly enough, there's Texas, New York and a New York, Texas.  Texas, New York is a hamlet located in Mexico, New York.  I think there are a handful of Jeopardy categories here.  ;)

At the risk of getting drawn into what could easily be the most boring discussion in the history of the forum, I'll say that I don't think the "sk" ending means "City."  It's a relational affix that signifies that what it's attached to belongs to something--so "Omsk" belongs to or is associated with the Om River, etc.  But even if it did mean "City," that doesn't really explain the quotes, unless they capitalized "City" within them as part of the proper compound--which they didn't.  So I'm still going to go with needlessly confusing.  Over and out before everyone goes into a coma.

At this juncture, I am reminded of the great Tom Lehrer and his song, "Lobachevsky": I have a friend in Minsk, who has a friend in Pinsk, whose friend in Omsk has friend in Tomsk with friend in Akmolinsk, whose friend in Alexandrovsk has friend in Petropavlovsk whose friend somehow is solving now problem in Dnepropetrovsk!

I wasn't really impressed with any of them, but I'm okay with her winning. That ski mobile overturn was head scratching for me. Alex the contestant was channeling Jay Z with his "Can I get a" on every freaking selection, but I think he was really nervous.

Lots of gets for me: cayenne, muddy, April thr giraffe, manatee, l'chaim, What's love got to do with it, What's new pussycat, Irish Sea, Itzhak Perlman, the frets DD, and Millennium Dome. I whiffed on FJ.

Sean was a total hunk but something was off about him. I wish he'd practiced saying his anecdote a few times, maybe.

Our champ is adorable. She reminds me of the cute protagonista of an 80s movie, in the best possible way.

I got What's New Pussy Cat (it took me the whole category to realize they were all questions. Need to pay attention to category names!) l'chaim, frets, giraffe and a couple of others. FJ was a big "doh" to me when it was revealed. I got hung up on the word  Greek for some reason.

Can I get an amen that the guy in the middle didn't win?

Why? I didn't notice anything obviously annoying, and I thought his Thanksgiving story was pretty funny, though I did want to know: 1. why the oven was spewing flames and 2. what they ended up eating.

I got Big Muddy, Athens, Charles I (thanks, Cromwell movie), manatee, L'chaim, in flagrante delicto, What's Love...?, and What's New, Pussycat

I did too, but I couldn't think of any famous Greek novels about brothers, and then I figured out the answer from the rest of the clue. I never read much Sherlock Holmes, but I loved the movie The Seven Per Cent Solution back in the day.

Lots of TS’s tonight. I got giraffe, manatee, l’chaim, in flagrante delicto, What’s Love ..., What’s New Pussycat and Itzak Perlman. I got FJ, it took me a minute to realize the correct name was Mycroft, not Miles.

Rachel isn’t the greatest champion, but she’s not the worst either.

sorry, i can't stand her!  maybe due to her first night with her swaying and dipping.

Cutsie Rachel needs to lose.  That skimobile (giggle, giggle - barf!) was B.S.  I guess they would have given it to Alex's girlfriend if she'd answered kitmobile.

Eleventy billion TS tonight.  I got cayenne (hated Alex's Dracula speaks cajun accent), St. Paul's Cathedral, giraffe, manatee, l'chaim, in flagrante delicto, What's Love Got To Do With It, What's New Pussycat, and frets (missed DD - notches was a better guess than Rachel's skimobile).

I was totally clueless for FJ.

Can I get Alex the hell off my screen for $200, please?  Good grief, dude.  Why did no one tell him to shorten things up during a break?

<exhales>

I got St. Paul's Cathedral, giraffe, manatee, l'chaim, What's New Pussycat?, What's Love Got to Do With It.

No clue for FJ.  My knowledge of Sherlock Holmes comes strictly from Elementary.  Never read any of the books.

Not a big fan of Rachel.  I agree with those who think she acts too cutesy.  Plus, she needed to pull her sweater up over her shoulders tonight.  <nitpicky>

I said Mazel Tov first and after that was wrong I said the only other Jewish toast I knew.

I didn't actually know "What's New Pussycat?" was a movie, but it was the only Tom Jones song whose title is a question that I knew.

For FJ, I first thought that it sounded like a Sherlock Holmes story, but then realized the category was brothers so I went with Sherlock's brother Mycroft.

I knew manatee from seeing the county on Florida license plates (Orca county?) and got the others.
