So Marius trying to get into the trunk of the car to retrieve his license was a little ridiculous.  How about just tell his cousin that something fell out of his pocket while he was in the trunk, like a lighter with sentimental value or something?

Or his cell phone, which seemed obvious. And then later a cell phone becomes the catalyst. Sneaky Pete is variably sneaky, it seems.

This episode is where I've lost interest.

I've made it u to 5 episodes. My biggest issue is that I don't care about ANY of the characters. They are interesting to greater or lesser degrees, but if they all died I would shrug.

I kind of agree with Bryce; it was fun to watch, but kind of plopped at the end with an Oceans 12 level super double secret con.  The thing is, tricking the audience isn't a clever con, since you as the creator are their only source for information to begin with.

I agree with this. It got too complicated and double-secret at the end. And I struggled with some things before that:

- Audrey is too smart to have been conned that way by Lance.

- Pete should have noticed the car following him at the end. Even we noticed, a couple of times.

- Why did Carly suddenly lose her desire to expose Pete? She actually believed his too-late explanation of his 11th birthday, after he botched it earlier? Even with a NYPD detective telling her that isn't Pete? I didn't see anything that would sway her to either believe he is Pete, or decide he isn't and he was kind of cool so never mind.

- Winslow's death was too convenient.

- The Native American bad guy was awfully unforgiving about not getting his bail money back, and far more forgiving toward whoever arrested him and charged him. Seems like he would be psycho about both.

- And Lance was both scamming his ex's mother AND wanting to get back together with his ex? That seems doomed to failure.

- I especially struggled with Karolina. So she was trying to scam Vince several years ago, it didn't work and he somehow ... *kept* her? For years? And yet she was ready and willing to do the long con? How could she do that for years? And Vince, of all people, not realize she was faking? And if she wasn't faking, was that ever made clear?

- Also, I thought Cranston was over the top. And not in a good way. The cartoonishness took away from the menace. I think it was the accent that was the worst part of t. Like doing a James Cagney impression.

And the ending with the FBI ... OK, whatever. Overall I enjoyed a lot of this show. But the pieces never fit together smoothly for me, especially in a show where ideally we should be wowed by its interconnected intricacies.

My BF and I just started watching, after a we saw a trailer for it at the theater. When did theaters start showing ads for Netflix and Prime shows?!

Anyway, I liked the pilot. This second one makes me wonder how it will wear on me over time. I like a con story, but prefer the Hustle / Leverage / White Collar style -- more clever capers, less fingers-cutting-off. I tend to bail on shows that lean too far into the dark. Cranston's ruthless mobster is...ruthless. The family is good, looking forward to that half of the story

Really confused how Alison Wright fits in. I respect that they're not rushing to explain every mystery right off, but that's a delicate balance.

Also, who is the parent of the cop and the teen grandkids? I know the blonde's parents died, and her mom was one of the daughters. Pete's mom is another daughter. Who's the other child? Or are all three of them (blond, cop, teen) sibs?

Dude, cut your brother loose. I know you love him, but he has sold you out and endangered yoru life more than once. Eddie sucks.

Without spoiling it for you, let me just say that you will not be disappointed, this is a truly great con story.  Even with the loss of an occasional  digit.

I like the baseball bat trick.

I found the "you broke it you bought it" story to be long-winded and anti-climactic. But THIS was a great story! Great delivery, and it paid off perfectly with the bat toss.

I'm watching this season, and I can't remember what happened in the first season. There are too many storylines going on, especially when I can't remember who or what they are about. All the lying makes me anxious. How do these people keep everything straight?

I really like Giovanni Ribisi and most of the core cast, so I keep watching. However, I'm on the fourth episode, and I'm just kind of following the bouncing ball and hoping it'll all make sense at some point.

Compared to season 1, this season was very confusing. It didn't help that even though I watched the season 1 recap, I've still forgotten some things, and some of season 2 relates to those things. I can't remember who knows that Marius is Marius and who still thinks he's Pete. There are a lot more plots and subplots going on.

I couldn't remember what happened at the end of last season and had no idea who the two guys who grabbed Marius/Pete were. I had to go back and watch the last 2 episodes of season 1 before it made sense. I ended up loving this season though and really hope the series makes it another year. But it makes me a little nervous that nobody is in here talking about it. I promise it's worth it!

I'm glad that I re-watched season one before diving into season two. So much going on....and that's a good thing!! I love shows that makes me sit up and pay attention! That makes me put my phone down and watch...

Graham Yost, David Shore, Bryan Cranston, MARGO

AND Adam Arkin is directing S2E1. What more could you ask for?

I just love this

He was doing the Jesus-con. He scammed her for the money to be able to swoop in and save the day, endearing himself to the whole family. I think it's a bit fishy. Audrey seems to smart for that, but as you said, she seems to smart to fall for the con in the first place, so I guess we just have to take it how it is presented and hope next season makes more sense.

I'm on episode 1 and man am I annoyed. Why is everbody lying to each other, after what happened last season. They all know of the shit everybody did last season, minus some parts of "Pete's" story. They should tell each other what's up. Instead grandpa and grandma are lying to each other about the aftermaths of the crimes they commited, which they know about quite well and Pete won't tell his family that they are in danger and why. It's not like they have a cop in the family who could protect them or anything and it wouldn't be prudent for them to be on guard. No, it's much better when they have no idea that they are in danger, because.... reasons!

Man this writing is pissing me off. I had hoped it would get better after the first seasons lackluster finale. Doesn't seem like it.

That ending didn't make sense on so many levels. So the stoarge facility was adjacent to where the big bad was staying? So the FBI ripped down the walls there but didn't search the storage units? Ah bullshit.

And Maggie decided to stash the money there instead of taking it with her? Why? But okay, let's take that bullshit at face value. When in the hell would she have had time or opportunity to switch out the money for singles? She certainly didn't have boxes full of singles with her at the initial robbery and she didn't have any opportunity to get back in there later. Were the writers on crack?

This was convoluted as fuck.   I’ve always enjoyed Giovanni Ribisi as an actor and he was great in this, very compelling.   The supporting cast was also great.   The storyline, particularly as this season progressed,  was absurd.  It just kept making less and less sense.

So, what do we think that letter Carly had revealed about her parents’ death?  And is Shannon sticking with that dickhead for the money permenantly?   Was she seriously suggesting she act as the Bernhardt’s spy?   She would suck at that.  I’m only commenting on these side storylines because the main one made no sense and I couldn’t summarize it to someone if my life depended on it.

On a total shallow side note, I found Colin very attractive

I'm in the middle of this second season and I actually think it's a lot better than the first season of who's conning who's conning who that I thought got too clever for words. At least we have well-defined bona fide bad guys this time and the Murphy family are taking the victimized not-so-bad-guys role. Imo there are more interesting plot developments this season too. Still shaky for me are Julia's ex-husband and why he is still on the show, and I admit I still don't understand who the heck Marjorie is or why she keeps getting involved. I'd rather have the one con artist and not his posse on call 24/7 to get him out of scrapes (we could all be con artists if we just had them on speed dial). But still better than the NYC high-stakes poker game theme which I never bought into, that elite players would fall for a fake game.

Just finished the new season. It got off to a rocky start because there was just so much I couldn't remember and we were still dealing with all of it on TOP of a bunch of new details and characters. But by the 4th or 5th episode I kind of settled in and had a blast. Loved the finale (even though I'm admittedly still a LITTLe confused about some of the maneuvers). I really hope it comes back. This cast is second to none.

Finished it last night. Hope the next season if there is one doesn't end with the hokey big reveal/twist scene. And I guarantee Maggie didn’t dump all $11 million into the acid—maybe a few $thousand.... Do we know where Luka got the cash in the first place?

Yes, lots of threads that could be pursued in a third season. Still think this season was better than the first. Loved real Pete and hope he would come back; Maggie, not so much.

iI just finished it today and I really enjoyed it.  I like how all the characters have high-stakes storylines going on.  Some are stronger than others and I think they crash together at the end.  But the series is still a lot of fun, which isn't a surprise from the creators of Justified.  I really like these characters and the villains have that fun Justified vibe to them too.

Ribsi and Martindale are standout not surprisingly.  Jane Adams is terrific as Maggie and getting the real Pete more involved was one of the best decisions that they made.  Otto and Sam are a fun pair too.

Actor who plays Taylor looks like a young Nathan Fillion.

Considering I read some bad reviews, I was surprised that I enjoyed this season more than the first. I usually don't like these "problem procedurals," where every episode is a problem that has to be solved and that in turn leads to several more problems, etc. But the writing and acting is just good enough to make everything very watchable. Jane Adams in particular was a great addition.

I'll admit that the finale was extremely flimsy though. Them having two separate shoot outs in the same storage unit and it all led to a bunch of contrived cons, where Marius somehow an operation that included like ten people and had perfect clarity ten moves ahead, except Maggie was actually TWENTY moves ahead and blah, blah, blah.

Still overall, I liked it and I'll be interested what they'll do in season three considering they cleared the decks somewhat. Also funny how a conman impersonating their cousin is like their fifth worse problem that this family has.

We rewatched the whole first season, because we knew how convoluted it was. And picked up a lot of stuff we'd missed the first time around.

IIRC, Luka stole the cash from other bad guys in Montenegro.

I really liked real Pete this season - and especially when he was connecting with the casino manager. Too bad it got interrupted. I thought he was just going to be keeping her busy in a different way.

To me, the most mind bending thing was the passage of time - apparently last season took place in one or two weeks, and I think that's supposed to be the timeline for this season too. Can't believe anyone is still standing after all that drama and danger.

Loved Grandpa "introducing" the assassin's son and the other bad guy to each other. Made me laugh.

Cranston, who has been amazing in many shows, really was not great in this. Really why the hell did he think he could trust Karolina? NYC is filled to the brim with beautiful women who would see their soul to the devil for the good life. Why did he keep her around and why the hell did he think he could trust her? Cranston is more bumbling than scary.

The Jesus part did not happen until they set up the fake "sell the farm for nothing" con. It did not seem like the Jesus con was originally part of Lance's plane

I enjoyed this season overall. The stakes were much higher—I think every main character risked being killed or going to jail. Marius has created a serious mess in this family. But I still like him.

  •  I hated that Taylor had to get his hands dirty in the Winslow case in order to save his grandmother. I wonder if this will make him feel morally unfit to become a detective. And he had great chemistry with Roby. I am glad that he decided to stop being the side D anymore with his ex. Did we ever learn why they never got married? They were high school sweethearts who obviously still had the hots for one another.
  • I liked Carly. She wasn’t the typical, meddlesome TV teenager until she decided to go all Veronica Mars at the hotel. She could’ve gotten killed or got someone else killed.
  • I feel bad for the real Pete. He was genuinely happy to reunite with his family. I can’t believe he’d turn it all down to leave with Maggie.
  • Speaking of Maggie, she was one of the low points. Most of this season’s mystery and danger revolved around her in some way. Unfortunately, I didn’t find her likeable or even very interesting.  —And like other posters, I can’t figure out how she made the money switch.
  • The entire finale relied too heavily on contrivance and coincidence. I couldn’t follow it. And Marius had to rely on cold-blooded killers monologuing before they start shootings or dropping people in acid.
  • I wish there had been more Julia this season. In Season 1, she played a bigger role in Marius’ life. But at the end of the finale, she seemed very suspicious about ‘Pete’s’ identity. So maybe she’ll be more prominent in season 3.
  • oh, and I loved that Gina kept telling Marius, “stay away from me” because things go sideways whenever she works with him on a job. But I hope her character gets roped in again next season. I like the actress Jasmine Carmichael.

I agree. I did not understand why it seemed like some characters like real Pete, the guy at the casino, and the people at the psychic town were so enamored of her like she was a selfless wise old soul. To me, she was just some self-centered selfish woman, who actually thought she was doing good. Fake Pete got away from his heroin-addicted mother, but Real Pete's mother pretty much ruined his life and he still adores her. I really wanted real Pete to be able to hug his grandparents at the end.

I like Marius, too--although for someone who "doesn't get attached," he gets awfully attached.  There were several points he could have cut his losses and taken off, but stayed to help.  I think in a lot of cases, the money was just an excuse.  Even the season 1 arc wasn't just about getting away from Vance, it was also about vengeance for his dead friend.  And this season he seemed more attached to Maggie and Pete's family than they did.  (Well, maybe not Pete.  But Mommy's more important to him than anyone else.)

I am so glad I'm not alone in not liking or being interested in Maggie.  What exactly was Audrey supposed to apologize for?  I mean, I figured Maggie owed an apology for stealing money and running away with her criminal boyfriend, but what did Audrey do?  Did I miss something?  Or was it just not believing in all of Maggie's visions?  Because Maggie herself sort of admitted that she fakes it at times.

As for Julia, I  figured season 3 would start with Marius giving his "I want to be part of the family" spiel, and Julia'd listen and then drop the bomb--either in front of the group, or one-on-one with him, that she'd talked to the probation officer.  Because I assumed the whole point of that cliffhanger conversation with the parole officer was that he'd tell her the truth about Marius.  Whether or not she believes it, is another thing, I guess, but . . .

I think Marius saying he doesn't get attached is a lie he tells himself - though he may not have gotten attached to his marks before he met this family.

I didn't get a take away that we were supposed to believe Maggie was owed an apology - though I disliked her, and love Audrey, so maybe I'm biased.

Going back to season 1, Marius was blown away by the first family dinner. I think he became attached the minute he witnessed relatives sitting down together and actually talking.

That’ll be interesting. There’s still lots of chemistry between them, despite them not interacting a lot this season. I suppose it’s pseudo-creepy since they’re supposed to be cousins. I don't know--a couple of months, maybe?  Have they established that at all?

They are sort of the perfect family for a con artist whose mother is a heroin addict and a brother who needs taking care of--they're devoted to each other, but they're tough as nails.  (Pardon the cliché.)

Actually, I was  noticing some of the references to time in this season, and I think they're going one week per season. It's been a while since I watched the season, but I remember being astonished, and thinking how each of the characters must be completely exhausted. But then when I thought about it, it answered my question as to why the parole officer wasn't in it more.

I wonder if Julia will still like Marius once she finds out he’s been deceiving the family for... (how long has it been?)

If there are more seasons I will guess that Marius and Julia will be endgame. He will finally be a real part of the family and later they can welcome back original recipe Pete, who seemed to just want a hug from his grandparents.

This is so true. If this family was The Brady Bunch, there is no way Marius would be comfortable with them. They are a loving group, but the truth is everyone is at least a little shady. They are perfect for him.

Production on the third season starts "next" (this?) week.  Via Deadline:

Amazon has confirmed there will be a third season of hit series Sneaky Pete. Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios, announced today at TCA that production on Season 3 starts next week in Los Angeles.

The renewal was quietly done about two months ago, and was just announced today.

A third season renewal was not unexpected.  Amazon announced in March that the series would move its production from New York to California after being conditionally approved for $9.2 million worth of Golden State tax credits, making a third season highly likely.

I just discovered and binged both seasons and loved it. The writing is so clever and the cast is stellar. I guess my one complaint is that the main villains tend to be overly cartoonish and given to monologuing. And the overly complicated bison heist plot was a bit too much.

I've seen Jane Adams in a few things and the actress seems to have some weird aversion to using a comb. Her ratty hair distracts me from paying attention to what she's saying half the time.

I love Ethan Embry though and thought he was a highlight so I hope Real Pete makes a return next season. Maggie, I can live without. Although it's funny how she erased all doubt that Marius was Pete.

I hope Taylor moves on because he deserves better than Shannan. Clearly she just wants whatever money she can get from her current husband.

That's kind of what I was thinking too, although they'd have to keep their relationship on the downlow as long as everyone thinks they're cousins.

Season 3 drops on Amazon May 10th.

Giovanni Ribisi stars as a grifter who cons his way into a family with plenty of dark secrets of its own. The third season of the Prime Original series adds Patrick J. Adams as a ruthless magnate with a taste for fine art and Efrat Dor as a con woman.

In the beginning of season 3, they said it has been two weeks.

Whew! They've been busy!
