Joy and Austin: This One Time At Family Camp

I think it looks really nice when she’s all dressed up. But she was at the gym today and she just had a plain part down the middle with it pulled back. That did not look right at all.

I'm wondering if she did that to be more comfortable at the gym, without considering or caring how it looked?  I know my hair isn't its best at the gym but it is out of my face and away from machines.

I have been blonde for most of my life. During Covid I decided to let it grow out. It was just wonderful when it was half-and-half. 😆  it finally all grew out to natural brown and I am only 10% gray. My mother-in-law absolutely hates it. I also had it cut shorter, but she still says it’s too long.  She says it should be lighter and grayer. Yeah hello, why would I do that? She even went as far as to say that I look like a hooker! Good grief.

Anyway, everyone has an opinion on hair. It should be what you are comfortable with, not what everyone else thinks is good. Still not sure Joy knows what she’s doing though. I don’t get the sudden need for dark hair when that’s not even her natural color. But at least it’s not still down to her butt. It’s definitely an improvement from those days. but I don’t think Austin is as controlling as everyone thinks he is. She seems fine with trying out new things, and he doesn’t really seem to care much. I’m still holding out hope for Jennie  to grow up and find her style. Right now she is very plain in the plain skirts. I think she would be a perfect blonde. I hope she experiments with that because I think she really is quite pretty.

So true.

My tween grandson recently experimented with growing his hair longer, decided he did not care for it. Went for a haircut, came home and received the ultimate insult from his sister that his hair cut looked just like mine. 😂

it is not even close to the same as mine. but sister had her opinion

Did anyone see that Joy colored her hair a dark brown with red roots? Her friend did it for her from a box. When it was all done, Joy was crying, and not in a good way.

I’m not sure what that was all about. Or what hubby’s reaction might have been. But if anything, she should have gone lighter. Unlike Jinger who just was not made to be a blonde, I think it would’ve looked fantastic on Joy. Just like Jana seems like she could be a natural blonde. i’m really hoping she goes to get it fixed and goes lighter – at a professional salon.

I think we've all been there after a cut/color change that didn't turn out like we wanted. I know I've ended up in tears a couple of times in my 47 years after a cut turned out not like I envisioned. And let's not even talk about the spiral perm in the 90's that was an epic disaster. I had to have a foot cut off before the perm, it was so long, then it took 99 rollers and 2 bottles of perm solution, it was still that long and thick. It ended up a horrible frizzy mess. So. Many. Tears! For many, many days.

I also used boxed dye once, trying to bring out the red in my natural brown hair. It turned out a deep burgundy. I actually really liked it, but not everyone would have been okay with purple hair!

I used to color my hair for years.  One time in the 90s I got one that made my hair eggplant colored!  No worries.  After a few weeks I colored it again. I like that Joy is experimenting.  If she likes her choices or revisits them, that is good. She doesn't have to please us.  I hope she doesn't think she has to please Austin, but, well...she probably wants to.

Oh my goal as a teenager was to have Barbra Streisand’s curly perm. It was the easiest hair ever. I would just wet it and use the pick, oh so 70s. Well, I got to college in the 80s, and all the girls had long hair. So much for my Barbara style. We all want to fit in. Not so sure about the evangelicals though. The rods don’t seem to care what the hell they look like. But I did just hear Jinger say that Jeremy paid for someone to come over and help her do make up. Ha. Remember when she was orange and had a curly perm and raccoon eyes. That was not the look that the preacher wanted.

About 25 or so years ago, I ended up with a horrible perm. My hair had always been naturally curly but when my son was born, I lost the curl. I asked for a loose perm. She used small rods all over my head. I looked like a brillo pad. It was horrible. I cut my hair short, did deep conditioning every chance I got and never went back to the place (they did give me my money back). It must have scared my hair because a year or so later, the curl came back!

As for dye, I do my own. Nothing wrong with playing with color. I'm allergic to hair dye and can only tolerate 9A from Nice and Easy. I haven't had a reaction in years and I'm tempted to do a bit red but I'm afraid. Joy is lucky. She should have fun with it. At her age, I was always a red head.

I'm familiar with and have participated in discussions on all the Duggar girls from Jana to Joy, and I know Josie is the youngest, but I can never remember which is which with the three in between.  I know there's a Jordyn, Johannah (Hannie), and Jennifer.  Could someone name them from left to right in the above picture between Joy and Josie?  I must make an effort to memorize them this time.  Yes, I have no life. 🙃

From L to R - Michelle, Jana, Jill, Jessa, Jinger, Joy Anna, Johannah, Jennifer, Jordyn-Grace, Josie.

They're in age order, of course.

I thought all the unmarried girls still at home were required to wear skirts, but Johanna doesn't appear to be wearing a skirt over her leggings. I guess because she is over 18 she might get some more freedom? Jordyn & Josie have skirts over their leggings.

I've always been able to pick Jenny out of a line up, as she has a distinct look to me. Not sure how to describe it or what it is, but she's always looked specific to me. Jordyn is the one I can never pick out individually, its mostly by default I know who she is. Although when the younger girls were younger and lumped together a lot, I could never tell which one was Jordyn and which one was MacKynzie.

Hannie is wearing a skirt. You could see it when she moved in the reels Joy posted.

Ah thanks. I stand corrected then. It didn't look like there was one in that picture but I didn't watch the reels. I was more surprised it didn't look like she was wearing a skirt. I guess that was too much to hope for.

I just saw a reel on FB, sorry I don’t know how old it was so May have already been discussed, Joy was asking Gideon all sorts of questions including his full name, age, his favorite things, etc. I thought it was really sharing too much, and I noticed at one point that Gideon is still sucking his thumb.

If it's the one I'm thinking of, a few weeks ago Joy asked questions of all her children on Instagram, saying that she wants to make it a yearly tradition, asking them the same questions every year so they can look back on it when they're grown.  It's a cute idea, but yeah, I wouldn't put it on social media.

Not that the kids are ever alone, but some stranger could come up and say hi Gideon, aren’t you blank blank name, blank age, blank grade, etc. He might be trusting of that person because they know everything about him.

I think I mentioned before somewhere, the girls at home are getting very modern with their clothes. Even though they still wear skirts, the most common pairing seems to be black tights or leggings with a fairly clingy, black skirt, barely to the knees. Even Michelle had that on for one outing. I think that’s a lot more defrauding than a looser pair of jeans or any slacks. you can see the complete outline of their butts, and most of their legs are showing in the tights. oh, and I’ve always wondered why they never considered perverts with a foot fetish. Remember how the girls always wore sandals? And then they got into painting the toenails. There are lots of creeps out there who probably love it. if you’re going all crazy on modesty, think about that one.

I have a major aversion to feet. I do like myself in boots or cute heels. But I don’t like anything open toe. And I think men’s feet are extremely ugly. That’s one fetish I’ll certainly never understand. Although the cutest thing in the world are baby feet! They are so perfect and soft and clean and sweet!

Haha! I totally agree about men’s feet. I NEVER want to see them, lol.

Joy and Austin and kids are in LA again. I think they said they were celebrating Gideon‘s birthday, and he really wanted to be with Felicity. I’m glad to see two of the sisters being so close. Maybe Jinger (always sick of having to redo the spelling!) is helping Joy in her journey - as they say - in this “season” of life. Plus, I think Jeremy and Austin are really into each other. I think they are kind of cute together.

Because of all the cousins, Felicity mentioned Gideon when she found out that Jinger was having a boy. She said Gideon would be so excited.

Joy is overwhelmed, I believe, because she never learned good time management skills and she did experience post partum issues. It happens, yes, but most people seek to correct the issues. She does need to send her two older children to a school. Her life would be much better off and maybe, just maybe, little Gideon will quit sucking his thumb, which is a germy habit. His need to continue to do so is concerning. What stresses is this child trying to sooth himself from? Address those, Joy and Austin.

What work does Austin have in LA? It seems like they’re there for quite a while. Joy said that they spent some time with Jinger, but now they are staying in Airbnb‘s. Jinger is about to have the baby and Joy wants to give them all time alone for that. I thought that was kind of thoughtful.

Evy seemed to want the baby out of the playpen. She was saying something like oh buddy, how can we get you out? So I don’t think that was malicious, she just wanted him out sooner. But a mother standing and recording instead of saying that we don’t ever ever push over anything that baby is in is just so stupid.

GeeGolly just beat me to it.

Just a guess, but I think  there is a huge demand for construction workers right now. I wouldn't be surprised if companies are hiring at very good pay.  Or Austin is in California seeing if "Duggar Construction" can get permission to work in CA.

I think Austin works independently of the Duggars. Maybe Jason pitching it would be more likely. He's a contractor, possibly even licensed.

This vlog of their life in Cali shows she gives Gideon a whopping 40 minutes of "school":

https://www.instagram.com/p/DGsBykNMYFk/

It's so depressing that Joy is passing on the cycle of educational neglect. At least Jill is sending her kids to school.

I thought about this, since she's been in Cali for what seems like forever. No way Gideon is getting a ton of schooling done. With how overwhelmed she is and all the struggles she has been having, I wish she would send Gideon to school and maybe put Evie in preschool. Austin should encourage this too. There is no way any of these kids will ever have a decent homeschooling education.

I give props to Jill for putting her kids in school. I know Derick went to public school and I'm sure he had a lot to do with it. I also think he saw Jill being overwhelmed with homeschooling. I remember a video she posted and she was completley exhausted. It wasn't much longer after that video, that Izzy started kindergarten. Heck, I believe Izzy was playing baskeball this year. Jill had a video of them going to his last game of the season.(I'm only assuming it's Izzy, she just said, "One" of their kids).

I wish Joy and all the others, that will eventually homeschool, that it's not a horrible thing to put your kids in school. Keep in mind, I have nothing against homeschooling, IF you are educated yourself and are good at it. None of these women have had a decent education.

Jessa, might be doing well with it, but her kids(especially Spurgeon)should be in school to be around other kids and make some friends. I can't imagine what it's like for him(and probably Henry by now), to be in that house with all those kids. I don't believe Jessa is done having kids either.

Joy answered on a Q&A that Austin owns his own construction company. So luckily he doesn’t have any ties to any family members. I wonder if he’s very successful, or how many employees he has.

Joy has also been spending so much time with her sister that they rush out the door every day, with very little schooling, so that the kids can go see their cousins. I know they’re probably really enjoying seeing them since it won’t last forever, and who knows when they’ll be together again. But there would be nothing wrong with spending the morning doing school, and then head over to Jinger’s and do whatever they do. It looks like a lot of coffee out and thrifting.

What would be wrong with a Christian school, except maybe cost? But if you are really that devoted in your religion, you shouldn’t fear your children being around other people. If they have a good grounding in their beliefs and morals from home, you shouldn’t worry that some strange other YOUNG children are somehow going to corrupt them.

I hope Austin is licensed.

He would probably be better off working for someone with a CA license.  CA has a lot of regulations and hoops to jump through though.  But they need a lot of people for building crews, and I would think builders are paying well right now.  There is probably a potential to make a lot of money if they would make a temporary move to CA for a couple of years.
