I think Whoopi is great and am so glad she will still be on the show - that woman really does know how to do things her way....and I imagine she is welcoming Rosie with open arms.

The show will now have excellent guests and hot topics, some fun thrown in - and lots of sparks. Things Sherri and Jenny could not do. Or even BW for that matter. W and R will welcome guests and make it about them.....and not put them on the spot like BW did. Every single time.

So Whoopi was in California this weekend?    She must have flown - that's not enough time to take her bus and back.   I wonder if she will show up tomorrow and if she doesn't who will take the moderator's seat?

Whoopi has yet another interesting gig.  According to the article, she will be a panelist TONIGHT on "CBS News: 50 Years Later, Civil Rights."  Guess this is why she was not on The View today.

It's so funny that today's "moderator" didn't mention this--but instead led us to believe that maybe Whoopi wasn't feeling well and needed that "plate of brownies" Sherri mentioned.   Yeah, but let's mention 2-3 times the hilarious Bone Hampton's "comedy" gig.

Thanks for the heads up on this show @Ellie.  I missed the beginning, currently recording, and hopefully it will be rebroadcast  so I can catch it all.

Still, I don't know why Whoopi wouldn't be able to make it to an 11:00 show if this one didn't start until six hours later.

Wasn't it mentioned somewhere that she is filming a movie right now?  Maybe she had to do scenes at that time?

A tad off topic, but I saw Whoopi's performance on Law&Order: CI this week and was reminded  what a terrific actor she is.  In a show studded with stellar performances over the years (see Neil Patrick Harris as the Dahmerish character), hers absolutely stands out for me.

She moves from compelling and a bit off putting to drop dead scary - I mean the stuff of nightmares, she is that chilling at the end.

The woman belongs on great tv shows and film.

Oh and she can do comedy.  Her turn on The Middle was funny, charming, disarming and ultimately gave the episode to Eden Shere - as it should be - a truly generous actor.

Love her

I believe that with the addition of Rosie who is bright and articulate, Whoopi will be reenergized.

Gosh, kaygeeret, I'm following and agreeing with you again.  I especially liked Whoopi's episode on "The Middle."  That was such a good character and Whoopi's interpretation made it excellent.  Also have seen her on Law & Order.  Great role.  And "The Chris Rock Show" was good, too.

I'm excited to see Rosie and Whoopi together.  As she said herself, they are grown-ass women, and both have experience working with other stars, even big stars.  Those two aren't like any of the other women who've sat at the table.  Depending, The View could possibly be a good show again without BaWa and Sweaty and some others.

I'll believe it when I see it @kaygeeret, but I hope you're right.

I agree that Whoopi is a good actor, although I've never thought her performance in Ghost warranted an Oscar although she certainly deserved the Best Actress Golden Globe for The Color Purple.

Whoopi was amazing on that episode of Law & Order CI. I also really enjoyed her on Everybody Hates Chris.

You know, I thought otherwise before, but I was wondering, with the addition of Rosie (a former moderator) along with Whoopi's recent absences/vacations and her contract being up next year, if next season may really be Whoopi's last for any multitude of reasons. Maybe they plan for Rosie to take over as moderator afterwards? If that's the case, I'm guessing they'll hire three more co-hosts for the new season so the panel will still be "complete" when Whoopi leaves. (And I have to say, I like when there are 5 at the table.)

Even though Whoopi's eventual departure means they just decided to completely revamp, I still say Joy's departure had more to do with Barbara's narcissism, so that she could have the longest run of anybody on The Barbara Walters Show, oops, I mean The View. I wish Joy would finally write a tell-all so we could know about all the backstage happenings. She's the only one I can picture telling an accurate picture, since Elisabeth, Whoopi, Lisa, Meredith, and Barbara would gloss over things they don't wish to discuss, while Sherri and Star would probably paint a biased picture. I don't think Rosie would lie or avoid anything, but she wasn't there for much of the big happenings for the show so not much to fill a book.

Oh wow @TheGreenKnight I bet you're right!   I never thought of that but it makes perfect sense when you consider The Year of Barbara!  Although if I was Joy I would be happy I missed out on being part of that.

I think it will be fun to watch Whoopi and Rosie together and hope they work well together and the new season and new version of the show is a hit. I read that the current show generates a little over $100 million a year in advertising dollars. A more popular show would command more! If they synch well together, ABC might want to keep them both once Whoopi's last year of the contract is over, but it all boils down to money. They'd be the two highest paid cohosts so if ABC though they could get away with maintaining high ratings and paying less, they might not renew Whoopie for someone cheaper.

Or she may have tired of the ”daily" grind of being on the show, have other projects in the works to pursue. And might not be interested in contract renewal unless given a huge pay increase. She's got a year to orchestrate future projects.

I wonder IF Whoopi's contract was also up this year, as Sherri's was, if TPTB would have opted to not renew her asked her as well and gone into the new season with Rosie and an all new group of cohosts.

I don't think Whoopi has enjoyed this year at all, although I'm guessing she knew it would be bad already. Even though she's only there for the paycheck, I imagine this year was extremely irritating between having to stroke annoying/senile Barbara's ego while having to put up with Jenny's mindless fluff and Sherri thinking she has to scream nonstop in order to carry the show in its time of need.

I'm sure Elisabeth irritated her, too, and Sherri was never a close buddy, but at least she seemed to get along with Joy to a degree. I'm sure Whoopi is looking forward to the new season more than the viewers are.

I think Whoopi is a very hard worker. She is not going to small comedy clubs at $28/tkt, nor mc'ing, or gone all the time doing small things like Sherri is often doing (tv sitcom character acting not withstanding).

She produced Sister Act on Broadway in 2010 and it went to Europe, done quite a few movies since them (wiki), her Ballerina books, lots of charity, Mom's Mabley for HBO, appeared on Glee, The Middle and other tv shows....... and on  and on. Pretty significant accomplishments.

A lot of work. Sometimes I think people think she is in a fog at home smoking all the time and yet her accomplishments speak for themselves.

I'd be bored with The View if I were her but I see a spark from her with the new changes and the opportunity to stay and do everything else she does with probably a little less responsibility with Rosie now their. Win Win for them both!

Whoopi was on the Today Show today:

Here is an interesting view of the segment:

http://www.showbiz411.com/2014/07/28/whoopi-goldberg-crosses-over-to-nbc-today-show-message-to-abc

She didn’t respond at all when Savannah Guthrie asked if she was happy Rosie O’Donnell was returning to The View. She completely ignored the question.

Whoopi said: “When I come back in September, there could be six turtles sitting there.” She also said: “The View will always be Barbara Walters’s show.” Really? Barbara is supposedly retired. Something’s up. And this was Whoopi’s way of telling that to ABC. The ball is in their court.

Thanks, Springtime, for the article.  I think Whoopi is very shrewd.  She has said that when Barbara asked her to do The View, she was at a low point, running out of money (she takes care of all of her family) and unable to get work and dropped from her contract with the weight loss company.  The View has given her her career back.  She has done guest appearances on tv, movie roles, produced movies, produced theater.  I really don't think she needs The View as much.  I think going to a competing network for an interview sends some kind of signal.

Yes, Morgalisa, I agree that Whoopi is very shrewd.  I can see why she'd ignore the question about Rosie, and why she'd give a shout out to BaWa - never know when she might need her.

Six turtles (movie promo) sitting there this September made me laugh out loud and think that it would be an improvement over what we've seen this past year.

Whoops sure did name-drop Babs.  Said it was her show and would always be her show. (I'm not so sure about that)  I have a feeling that Rosie will return as moderator and Whoopie will second chair as well as doing more remote bits.  (That's fine by me)  Regardless of how The Spew is revamped, I think it will be the last year for Whoppi.

I am not certain of what transpired between Ray Rice and Janay in the casino on the night of their arrest. There is casino footage , but I have not seen it on the internet. There were rumors (Deadspin) that Janay spit on Ray before he punched her so hard that he knocked her out. I have seen the video of him dragging her unconscious body out of the elevator and it is disturbing. What is more disturbing to me is that a show that is for women has so little understanding of the issues that women face. Every time there is an incident like this (see Chris Brown/Rhianna) Whoopi HAS to get her point in about women hitting men. Yes, Whoopi, we know-sometimes women hit men and a lot of times men beat the shit out of women for no good reason at all. Ray Rice is a professional athlete and I suspect he is much more powerful than his fiancée both physically and socio-economically (see the video of him dragging her unconscious body around for evidence of who has the most power in the relationship). If she did hit or spit on him, punching her so hard that she was knocked unconscious is not an appropriate reaction.   I guess I wouldn't have as much of a problem with Whoopi's stance if she did not bring it up every damn time the subject is brought up. (I always figure the person in the discussion who is yelling the loudest is wrong and that is often Whoopi)  Then Sherri has to point out while clucking her tongue that Janay married Rice (implying in my opinion that she deserves whatever she gets for doing that after he hit her). Anyone who has the slightest knowledge of domestic abuse would understand why women do this. I wish they would hire someone on this panel who has at least a college degree because the stereotype perpetration is non-stop on this show. I had softened on Whoopi a bit and now I am back to barely tolerating her.

Who on earth believes spitting at someone is in any way equivalent to slugging them? He could have just spit back at her. Did Whoopi mention this?

My grandparents considered spitting at someone to be one of the worse things you could ever do. Yes, even worse than fighting

I don't disagree with any of your points about domestic violence @GiveMeSpace, but I wanted to point out that Sunny Hostin was shouting as loud as anyone and she has a law degree.  S.E. Cupp, who I have zero use for - not even as snark material, graduated from Cornell; although the degree is Art History .  In other words a degree doesn't always stop people from broadcasting their ignorance on TV - at least that's how I see it.

And let’s not forget, Whoopi is not only an EGOT– which Guthrie made a big deal of– but also a considerably talented Tony winning Broadway performer. She can do anything.

(This is from the "Whoopi on NBC's TODAY show" link above...Bold emphasis mine)

Seems rather redundant--does the author not understand what the "T" in EGOT is??

Spitting is considered assault.

By whom? If someone spits at you, I hardly think an acceptable response to protect yourself from that scary saliva is to knock them unconscious. I don't think law enforcement would see it that way either.

And that would be wrong.  Look it up.  Spitting on someone is indeed considered assault.  So "by whom" would be the law enforcement and legal communities.

Whoop's general point that no one should hit is fine.

HOWEVER, I agree with posters that men have more muscle mass and strength, and therefore should not hit someone smaller--usually women and children.  It's like a more (moray--informal rule of civilized societies), to not hit women--which I agree with wholeheartedly.

Yes, some women are crazy and attack men violently. Exceptions who need restraining, or walking away, and a 911 call. It's a fine line, but I was raised old school, with a bullying brother. If I hit back, he would hit harder and more.  No respect for humans in general.

Whoopi, when the woman spit on Rice, it wasn't "assault, assault." You know, like your comment "rape, rape."

I agree that women shouldn't hit men and expect that men won't retaliate. BUT, this guy cold-cocked the woman. Knocked her lights out. It shows me he has no control whatsoever. He used an elephant gun to bring down a gnat. Sick. Shut up, Whoopi. P.S. Did you get my email? Because you told me not to email you. Don't tell me not to do something, you messy schlub. In fact, I'm going to send you 10 emails a day until you cry "uncle."

No. I won't. I don't have the energy, although I would love to annoy the hell out of her.

I’m surprised anyone would e-mail a celebrity. I imagine they just delete unknown e-mails like normal people.

I don’t really have an issue with what she said since she was talking in general, but she was ready to go out guns blazing on Monday. I think she was trying to combat the 4 bimbos, but she ended up being the only voice you heard at all and came across crazy.

This comment isn't related to the Ray Rice incident, but, I would so much rather someone clock me than for them to hock a loogie in my mouth or eyes. Whether or not hitting someone is the proper way to handle it is on a case to case basis.

Whoopi had on her Little Bo Peep pants again today.

Oh, I'm so glad someone mentioned this @Morgalisa.   Today I noticed she was sporting brown corduroys - in July under a shirt the size of a bedsheet (and just as tailored) and big ole' red vest.  Sherri told her she looked like Jesus.  ????

Gosh wasn't that the strangest and ultimately funniest (in a stupid way) thing you have seen in a long time.  Whoopi looked gobsmacked and I was sitting like a fool with my jaw hanging down - I still have no idea what the heck Sherri was rambling on about - -was she drunk?

Today's costume made me wonder if Whoopi has gained some weight back?  She certainly didn't look as pared down as even a month ago.

Nonetheless, I cling to my Whoopi love and hope she and Rosie can rescue the show.
