The Duggars: In the Media and TLC

Guest

As a reminder, the site's Politics Policy remains in effect.  Yes, Jim Bob is apparently running for office again. That does not make it an acceptable topic of conversation in here - unless for some mysterious reason, TLC brings the show back and it is discussed on there. Even then, it would be limited to how it was discussed on the show.

If you have any questions, please PM the mods, @SCARLETT45 and myself.

Awwww.... boo hoo.  How about a show about families that adopt or take in foster kids, or care for their elderly parents?

Unfortunately, I don't think many people will watch a "reality" show that's not about someone who seems quite outlandish. if the mass of watchers actually liked illuminating documentary-type shows, the tv landscape would look an awful lot different than it does. The mass audience really only wants to see somebody have to buy enough groceries to feed an army of kids that walk only on kitchen counters or somebody else have to get married without ever exchanging a hug. If the foster kids or the elderly parents were conjoined quintuplets or something, I can see it, though.

I would love the foster show. The only thing is TLC manipulating the plot. MTV does the same thing, 'reality'. If it was done right though.

I wonder if Jill and Derrick are scouting for a potential adoptees for Benessa or if that story line has changed.

Last week there was an article in the New Yorker about a family that had 22 kids, 20 of whom were adopted. Three died due to illnesses they had coming into the family, two went to prison, and several of the girls got pregnant while in college. Although this family's kids are all adults now, I'm sure someone at TLC is sniffing around for a similar group even as I type.

"It's an exciting time for Dill and I!"

It's DILL AND ME FOR CHRISSAKES.

Another big win for Gothardese-style schoolin', y'all!

Hey, they're here to change the world, not conform to it. This goes for grammar (and probably math) as well. (Also geography: new definition of overseas.  And history: King James wrote the KJV. By his ownself. Because being a monarch apparently wasn't enough occupation for him. And we know all about their revolutionary approach to biology.)

They could have left off the "re-".  That prefix says that they are being made victims AGAIN; which contradicts completely the notion they were not victims before.

"We are being victimized by the media."

"We were not victims before; we didn't even know what happened. Now, I feel like a victim of the treatment I've received by the press."

This. And mostly, victims of their show (at the time, potentially) being cancelled.

Hey, I could set them up with a camera-friendly family who are all medical doctors or currently in med school.

Or another, where every single one of them was valedictorian of their HS class.

Guess those are too boring. They have to be freaky or trashy to get picked up by TLC.

I noticed on the older picture they use for the article, Queen MEchelle is holding one of their books while sister mom Jana (who is standing right next to her) is holding baby Josie wearing a bow. Of course, Jenny & Jordyn are sporting the poor Dickens waif look. MEchelle please put your book down & run a comb thru their hair!

I'm more pissed that TWO of them are holding the book. Gotta make that money. No one wants you goddamned book!

On another note - TLC lost 19 million (and counting?) on the Duggars.

Good. I hope that nice lady with the ivy league degree who designed TLC as the subjugation channel based on her success selling the Duggar family has lots more time to spend taking care of her family real soon.

On a good note, though, I think I might get one of those $15 Duggar Studios t-shirts (a small !) cut it down to a belly shirt, make the neckline so low the whole world will be saying NIKE !  and then drive to Tonitown to see if I can run into one of them. Sure, it's almost a thousand miles from SomePityCity, but wouldn't the look on Michelle's face be just PRICELESS when she catches me in that get-up at Aldi's ?!  I'm thinking eye-buggage to a degree we've never seen before  ;)

OMG ROAD TRIP! Can I come? I'll fashion my Duggar Studios t-shirt into a micro-mini! We can eat tater tots and listen to screechy violin music in the car! If it's on the way, we can stop off at the Creationist museum and laugh and point!

Certainly, Aja ! All are welcome ! I'll bring the oh-so-classy boxed wine and my doggie, pictured in my avatar, who is, coincidentally, from a shelter in NWA !!! Yep, I adopted a doggie that no one else wanted (he has a facial deformity) from Duggar Country ! Fortunately he's very open-minded when it comes to religion haha...

I've often wondered if he could have been one of the dozens of the Duggars' Lost Dogs ???

On another note, the losses that TLC has suffered, depending which news source you read, are just about a million dollars per person. That seems...poetic somehow. Or perhaps ironic. Add that to the 20 million they lost with Mama June and Company, and TLC is going to be hurtin'. Maybe they'll start showing some of their old programming again ? I can hope...

CNN just reported that they haven't written off the spin-off for Jill and Jessa and their respective spouses and children.  Blerg.

The article mentioned that too. It conflicts with the Jim Bob disapproving of a sequel storyline. Losing Marge was a big blow to any spinoffs or specials. Jll would have to cut her vacation short and come back to Arkansas for filming. I'm sure Jessa's down for a show that's nothing but her.

Not gonna happen. The public sees the desperate grifting and attempts to stay relevant. The abuse documentary ain't gonna launch any careers.

In other not-so-news: in that earlier pic posted maybe a couple days ago, where Michelle is standing in the boys room, pointing at the lug in the floor. TLC should consider a return to its roots.

I'm not 100% serious, but they could use a few new shows on short runs to test new angles. If they approached some of these human interest/reality shows with new directors less enamored of the tawdry and goofy, they might find a network direction that's less reliant on these situations that blow up.

TLC's not going to go back to its roots. I'll bet they made much more than $24 million off the Duggars already, implosion or not. I've heard for years that entertainment industry accounting is mostly fictional anyway.

I'm sure they're scouring the world for the next freak show as we speak. My prediction: they'll be launching "The Rehomers," featuring those people who collect adopted kids that the parents don't want anymore. Bad parenting, lots of kids, hot-button issue -- it's a TLC trifecta!

I wonder if TLC will sue the Duggars to try to get some of the money back?

Not sure about the ratings, and I doubt they approach those of 19 Kids, but the show gets renewed so it must be doing well enough. Our forum has a few people weigh in after each episode.

People liked weird. Especially tlc. The duggars got a show due to their awful fashion style and number of children. How many people in America are actually saying we're leaving up the number of kids to God? Or has strict and ridiculous standards. Only fundies.

I would watch if Caitlin Jenner moved in with JB and Mullet and helped Gramma Mary with the laundry.

Please. No spin-off of any of them. Maybe it will dawn on a few of the J-kids that the family is nuts.

It Cost $24 Million To Cancel ’19 Kids And Counting’

After the amount showed up on its second-quarter earnings report, Discovery Communications CFO Andy Warren confirmed the company took a $24 million hit for “restructuring” after it canceled the Duggar family’s show.

DISCA shares down 12% out of a market cap of $13 billion + in one day, for the lowest share price since 2010. Wow. Pretty good sized drop.

The risk of these children having antisocial or inappropriate behavior in their pasts is probably too large for TLC at this point.

That baby looks so uncomfortable.

It Cost $24 Million To Cancel ’19 Kids And Counting’

Kaitlan Collins

Entertainment Editor

TLC canceled “19 Kids and Counting” after Josh Duggar admitted to molesting several girls as a teenager, including his own sisters, and it cost their parent media group $24 million to end the series.

After the amount showed up on its second-quarter earnings report, Discovery Communications CFO Andy Warren confirmed the company took a $24 million hit for “restructuring” after it canceled the Duggar family’s show.

“Higher other losses (which includes currency impact) and $24 million in restructuring from the cancellation of ’19 Kids and Counting’ (not included in segment earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) offset the higher profitability leading to the earnings per share miss,” Warren said.

Eh, that's just typical accountant hijinks and CEO tap-dancing when a company doesn't meet their projected earnings mark.  It reminds me of the Richard Gere number 'Razzle Dazzle' in the movie Chicago.

Wow !!!  Sew Sumi - could that baby's head be any less supported... ???

I don't have kids, by choice, and don't even really like them, to be honest (sorry !) but even I know better ! I have nine nieces and nephews and seven great-nieces and nephews, and I've never been that clueless and irresponsible. I may not really like kids, but I know how to take care of them and keep therm SAFE.

Jesus on a cracker - how could she NOT know, after a LIFETIME of raising her siblings, that letting little Israel slump (schlump ?) like that is not good for his little neck and spine... ?!?!?

Oh, and the overly spread legs in the carrier is also NOT good for little baby bones.

As one of the comments there suggests, they could go forward the old-fashioned way. They like old-fashioned ways. Why not do like people did circa 1930s, 40s and 50s? Several adults live in one home. Each has a job and contributes to the family income. Younger children go off to school. How heathen can a small town school in northwest Arkansas be?

I know we have talked about this, but I would like to ask again,

When Oprah abruptly cancelled the appearance  TLC would of known obviously and the reason why.   Maybe Oprah's staff gave a vague acceptable reason versus telling the truth, but I doubt TLC would of just gone along with it.

So, imo they would of had to have know the truth.   I can't see them believing some story the Duggars cooked up.   They would of investgated, looked around, talked to people.

Of course we have seen many skeletons come out on numerous reality shows over the years too.

But, I keep coming back to Oprah.    A cancellation of an appearance like that, not your typical show , but involving huge budget to house, feed and prep them all costs.

So, wouldn't of TLC said, something really bad happened here.

My answer is always money.   Too much potential money to be made.

Wasn't it said that Oprah offered to give the kids college tuition and JB turned her down? I wonder whether her show wouldn't have offered that as their real reason for canceling the appearance? If I were an exec at another network, I think I might well have believed that as a reason. After all, it would not only insult the queen of television but make a contentious mess out of what the Oprah people may have planned as a heartwarming hour and it would have messed up one of Oprah's big themes -- her pro-education message -- as one of America's favorite families told her to take a hike with it, basically.

I sort of think that Discovery must have known the Duggar rumors, too. But I can also see a scenario in which the insult-to-Oprah's-philanthropy excuse got bought, since TLC really didn't want to find out anything bad about what they were eyeing (accurately) as their next big thing. Oprah's people could have done a wink-wink-nudge-nudge to TLC as they put forth the turned-down-the-tuition excuse. But they also may not have wanted to directly pass on the defaming rumor about these people since it was, after all, just a rumor that they'd received through an anonymous email.

Pure fact-free speculation, but Oprah is a sexual abuse survivor, and a vocal one. The Josh stuff, while not yet public knowledge, may have seemed legitimate enough to Oprah that she called everything off because, unlike the Duggars, she knows a little something about the way reality fame and People covers work and that it was only a matter of time before the world knew. Oprah is insanely smart and I bet she knew it was better not to be associated with them, both personally and professionally.
