SNL in the Media

Yup, Katy is still pumping out singles every year!  Whether people have heard of them or not is another story!  No shade to her, I almost always like her music.  I even saw her in concert.  From that, and from her doing the Superbowl, I gotta say she's a great performer!

I also remember the last time she was the musical guest, or rather, I remember a particular time, because she did the song "Walking on Air" which I don't remember her promoting much otherwise.  I love that song.

What does Mulaney do? I don’t follow him and only time I’ve seen him is hosting SNL.

He's best known as a comedian. He's done some Broadway and written comedy/variety specials in the past. You could Google him for a more specific response.

I wonder if they're having trouble getting hosts. It does seem rather soon to have him back.

I don't think that's it at all. He's had a difficult, somewhat scandalized year. He was booked this time as a chance for him to rehabilitate his rep and career.  I also read that he may in fact be going in a new direction comedically (more hard edged? Not sure), and this could give him the first step in that direction.

But maybe we'll get another musical out of it.

I Think That Since Saturday Night Live Has Not Been On Because OF The Winter Olympics That They Wanted A Host That Was Popular So People Would Watch Saturday Night Live !

What Did John Mulaney Do ? Did He Use The N Word OR Offend The Blacks Or Another Group OR Was He Accused OF Sexually Assaulting A Woman ? ?

He's been performing to sold-out clubs and now bigger dates, since soon after leaving rehab about a year ago, and is booked solid through September.  I haven't been able to see him live yet, but apparently his show has been very raw and honest, but still very funny.  I'm very interested to see how deep he gets into it in the monologue tonight.

I liked him before but yeah, this past year has left a bad taste in my mouth for him but to each his own.

I'm with you. Before his scandal he was my absolute favourite comedian/performer. For reasons pertaining to my own life, the scandal surrounding his divorce bothered me so much I stopped watching him, and had to force myself to watch SNL tonight.

He was good as always, but to me he seemed quite changed, and I'm sure I'll never enjoy him again the way I used to. It's complicated, and as much to do with me as with him.

I'm glad I finally watched him though. It's like "Phew, I'm glad that's over." Now I can start watching him as just another performer with human flaws, not the idealized version I had of him. (It's funny because I'm usually so cynical about performers. His scandal for me was like lots of people would feel if they discovered Tom Hanks had a long, secret history of harassing young actresses on set.)

Mulaney's scandals just make me feel sorry for him instead of putting me off his comedy. It's not like he's been revealed as a monster or anything, just fallible. I hope he's able to remain clean and get his life in order.

But I'd like to see maybe Kristen Bell or Stanley Tucci host for their FIRST time rather than more fifth timers.

I feel the same way, he’s human.

Lizzo is the least surprising for me, solely because there was a tweet last week from someone claiming to have attended the Zoe Kravitz episode and hearing people in the crew mention Lizzo hosting. She could be a lot of fun. I also enjoy double duty episodes because sometimes cast who are about to leave will get the chance to introduce one of the performances.

Jerrod is the most surprising to me because I had not heard much of him since his sitcom was canceled several years ago (also an NBC show...no hard feelings I guess). He has an upcoming standup special. I could see him just playing filler roles while Kate, Aidy, Pete, Cecily, etc. have showcases, but I hope they might try a few different styles for him and use his comic voice, ideally giving Ego and Punkie a bit more to do.

I know Jake is very controversial these days, so I'm not sure how much will end up being Taylor Swift jokes, but he was very charismatic and committed the first time he hosted (15 years ago!) and I could see him doing weird,  fun things with Sarah or with (if the show lets him on the air again) Aristotle.

A review and recap of Jake's first episode:

Meh. I didn't think Cumberbatch's first time hosting was all that great. The only thing I really remember off the top of my head now is the game show with Beck wanting to know " Why is This Guy Handsome"?

I wish they had given the slot to Elizabeth Olsen.

I would enjoy seeing Elizabeth host, but I think a year or two ago she was asked in an interview and said she was too nervous about the idea of hosting live. I do wonder if she may appear in a pre-tape to help promote their movie.

I don't think Cumberbatch stood out very much (I think his best work was probably the Chad sketch), but that was a terrible time to host as it was the last episode before the Presidential election. He won't be as overshadowed this time. Still, I have a feeling he's going to be another of the "honorary cast member" hosts this season who mostly just plays ensemble roles while some of the main players do the heavy lifting.

Not sure if this has already been posted but Dana Carvey and David Spade have a podcast called FLY ON THE WALL which is all about SNL.  Every week they have on a different guest who has been part of SNL - Conan O'Brien, Tom Hanks, etc. It's great!

I'm reading David Spade's memoirs "Almost Interesting".  I'm a big fan of his.  The beginning of the book is so crass but when he starts getting comedy gigs and now he's on SNL it's fascinating!

What first came to my mind was the backwards toilet sketch.

I actually went back and found it on YouTube because I remember being actively angry at the inanity of that sketch, but on rewatching it now, I just see a middle of the road sketch that wasn’t good, but wasn’t the worst thing.  So I’m on board for him coming back after rethinking my entire approach to backwards toilet humor.  😉

Arcade Fire will always be “New Cast Member or Arcade Fire?” to me when they show up on SNL.  Now that was a good sketch.

Did they really only hire a bunch of white people that year?

Yes, until they got backlash enough to hire Sasheer Zamata mid-season. That's also when Leslie Jones was hired as a writer, and Amber Ruffin ended up being brought over to Seth's show after her audition.

My how times have changed that they thought it was appropriate to absolutely flaunt that in a sketch.  Like they were proud of it and thought it was adorable.

I love the podcast!  And his book is funny, I am also a huge fan of his.  I like his snarkiness.

I wonder if this is why it took so long to hear of the booking, as they had to work around her schedule to the last minute....usually we already know about the final two hosts by this point.

There's a good chance Steve Martin and Martin Short will appear in this episode. Martin Short said last year he and Steve didn't really want to ever host again but were talking with the show about Selena hosting and them doing  cameos.

This is her sketch appearance, back in 2016 (how is that 6 years ago...).

As soon as I heard this, I immediately thought that there's about a 98.9% of Steve Martin and Martin Short showing up.

I have absolutely nothing against Natasha Lyonne, but my honest reaction to this as a season finale is  "Meh."

As I said awhile ago in another thread, Paul Rudd was the perfect choice.

My main reaction was whether this tells us we will be getting on-air exits for some of the Kate/Aidy/Cecily-era cast members, instead of more "I haven't decided yet," as  Natasha is friends with several of them.

I was assuming Rudd or Emma Stone might host, but a part of me hopes having a new host might mean they won't mail in the finale the way they do some years. I guess we'll see...
