S04.E15: Instead Of Damning The Darkness, It's Better To Light A Little Lantern

Daphne, Bay and Travis head to Mexico on spring break to do volunteer work with Melody. While there, Daphne forms a surprising bond with another volunteer, Bay's anger erupts and Melody's boyfriend presents her with a life-altering suggestion.

I wonder who will be the recipient of Bay's anger. She could yell at Emmett, if he shows up in Mexico.

She could scream at Daphne - "I took the fall for you and here you are partying it up, running around with a new guy, while you  got a D in Chemistry".

The announcer said that Big changes will be coming to SAB. We will see what they are.

Why do they hate Bay so much whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

Let's sum up the Mexico spring break. Daphne felt great about helping people, learned a valuable lesson about how there are poor people in the world with few life choices, turned into Annie Sullivan to the point that I expected her to drag Patty out to a water pump in the town square, and of course got a hot guy to fall for her at first sight. Bay had to spend the week around her ex, confront her own jealous nature, missed the interview that was the only reason she went at all, and get yelled at by Melanie.

I really don't get why Daphne is ALWAYS the golden girl and Bay is ALWAYS the one crapped on. Always. I was hoping that at least it turned out that the nice old woman she was talking to was the manager of the museum she was supposed to interview with, but no. (unless I blinked and missed something)  God forbid Bay have success or joy at anything.

I was disappointed by having Travis have a crush on Bay. I was hoping that while Emmett was doing that self-serving apology that he'd point out that even if he did like Bay, Emmett had no right to act like that, but I didn't want him to actually like her. Now it's trite and cliche and all that other stuff, and now Bay has to deal with having one of the few friends she feels she has in the world be someone who will shy away and act weird and has an inappropriate crush and there goes that tight friendship, crashing on the shoals like the rest of her hopes and dreams. And it looks from the previews that next week is also going to have a hefty helping of Let's Crap on Bay. I just don't get it.

WHY did they have to go there with Travis being into Bay? Why couldn't they just be close friends who support each other? Is that just so ridiculous?

Poor Bay. What did she ever do to the writers to make so much crap happen to her?

I sure hope Daphne does not get vertigo. It must be high up there on her high horse.

Is it me, or are the episode titles getting more and more pretentious?

I was hoping Bay was still going to get the job too....maybe we'll find out next week or something?  Bay could really use a break.  She should have loads of good karma from taking the fall for Daphne.

Is it bad that I was hoping the Mexican deaf girl wouldn't learn how to sign anything, just so Daphne would not get something she wants.

Am I alone in being fine with Travis and Bay?   Why wouldn't they?   They both need something and they probably won't find it in each other, but they could find a little comfort there on their way to other people.

Seriously, though, I was really worried Bay was going to end up institutionalized in this ep.  Get over it, already.  You can do better than E, Bay.  Quite frankly, Travis is better than E.

Does Katie's mom write this show? I cannot believe Daphne's super powers. There is honestly nothing she can't do. I know my frustration is not coming across so I'll just say GRRRRRR!!!

I feel terrible for this, but I don't think Travis is good enough for Bay. She's a 10 and he's a 5. Everyone knows you only get 3 points leeway. He's nice and super sweet, but he's not smart, creative or ambitious. Plus, they have nothing in common.

Please don't turn Travis into another Tank, show.  She's not into him - she was just using him to make Emmet jealous.  Bay and Emmet bring out the worst in each other.

Expand Bay's circle.  Daphne shouldn't be the only one who gets to meet new love interests around every corner.

You can say the same about the writers. Maybe Travis represents them ... ;-)

At least there was no sex involved. That would have been the anti-climax. Milking the drama is all the writers can do. They are one-trick ponies.

I know!  Her magical lip reading was out in full force in this episode.  She even gets a deaf Mexican girl to understand "dog."  Not "perro" but "dog."  Ugh.

Daphne not being able to speak Spanish was insane. She was raised by a latina mother and grandmother. What the hell?! And she acts VERY entitled and clueless for someone who was supposedly raised poor. She should understand about barely making ends meet and the mother needing to get to her damn job rather than escort her daughter to a town an hour away. It's as if Daphne never heard of poverty before. But here's the clincher, the tiny detail that made me truly despise this character (and her pal). They didn't help the truck man pick up his friggin' lemons!!!! They stood there discussing their noble agenda to help the deaf of Mexico, while this dude scrambled around in the dirt retrieving his produce. Then they skipped off--still without helping him pick up so much as one lemon, or as far as I could tell--offering payment for the ride. Spoiled, selfish, rude, certain that she knows what's best for the world Daphne.

Whoa. I never once, during that entire episode, remembered that Daphne was raised Latina and should know Spanish.

Whoa.

They really have eliminated that part of her history, haven't they? The "I should get the scholarship because I was raised Latina" was the last gasp of ever acknowledging that Daphne was ever not a Kennish. She should have been a lot more empathetic and understanding about poverty, too - not that she had ever lived in a circumstance like that, but was in an impoverished area and should have known people who had opportunities denied due to their life situations. I was just mad that they thought it would be great to trip down to Mexico and "help people" without having the first clue of any Spanish, which means they'd really be more of a liability than a help (since they would need someone to spend all their time translating for them). Never even remembered what Daphne's background is supposed to be.

That bugged me SO MUCH. And on top of that, the lemon guy GAVE THEM SOME LEMONS TO TAKE ALONG! After they didn't help pick up, and didn't pay him at all. ARGH

Am I wrong, but didn't Daphne speak fluent Spanish when the show started? She was translating for someone at the clinic she was volunteering.

Why are they saying they're sisters? I know they are both sisters to Toby, because one was raised with him and the other is his bio, but they are not related.

How rude of Daphne and her new friend to just walk away leaving the farmer to have to repair his tire and pick up all the lemons and not even offer him money for the ride.

Link to comment

I'm not on the Daphne hate or Daphne's an annoying special flower train, but even I was surprised they didn't even show a token effort of helping the trucker pick up his lemons.  How hard would it have been to write and block one of them putting a crate back on the truck, or picking up a few lemons while they were talking?

I'd be okay with it if they tried it out and each went "No, this doesn't work for us." and moved on as good friends. But I do like that Travis is a really nice and supportive guy. Sometimes in relationships the quietly supportive one is what works best. I don't want them to date because a - I liked him a lot with Mary Beth and b - the girls are friends and so I could see that as a betrayal to MB. I don't care what Emmet's reaction is to them dating. He's awful. Although if he's going to be SUPER jealous I'd be okay with that too. Seeing him suffer would be fun. (I'm petty I admit)

I took a break from this show last season (or half a season). I catch up to this one and everything is the same: Daphne is still Saint Daphne, she who attracts men from all over. Bay is still miserable and overlooked. Regina still has man issues. The Kennishes are mostly the same WASPs. Why am I back? I blame another friend on here for that. Still, I missed Toby and Bay.

When I saw the previews for this episode, I was actually warming up to the idea of Travis/Bay. Travis has slowly been winning me over since he first started on the show. He's always been written as an underdog. He's been overlooked at home, at work, but he's developed a lot as a character as a result. He was supportive of Daphne (she didn't deserve it) when he liked her and now for Bay. Something Bay and him do relate to is that they both know how to feel like outsiders more than Emmett or Daphne do. I think that's why they get along.

Except I was not on board with Bay using her best male friend to make her ex jealous. Ugh. She should have apologized to Travis as well as Emmett. Not cool, Bay.

I prefer both girls to be single for years given how many boyfriend storylines they've had in THREE YEARS (another thing that gets me about this show is the slowness of time). However, I'd rather Bay date someone who has been good to her and not some newbie that they throw in and out like they keep doing for Daphne's love interests.

The non-helping with the lemons bothered me too! And what happened to the poor lemon truck to make everything fall out? And if they could take the bus back, why didn't they take a damn bus out there? Poor Mr. Lemon man probably would have had no spillage at all! (I blame Daphne for the lemons' downfall.)

Anyway...is it wrong that I really hate Saint Daphne more when Katie LeClerc goes into super smiley mode? It's too much piled on top of too much already. I was rooting for Pati's mom to tell her to frak off just so she wouldn't "win." Then of course the older hot dude decides he must kiss her. Hopefully that's planting some seeds for a Mingo exit.

Also--what the hell with Melody agreeing to adopt a kid with Gabe? When she's in Kansas and he's in Mexico for how long? And they're not even married, so would they even be able to get approved? It just felt way abrupt. And then she doesn't even ask Emmett how he'd feel about it (even if he's an adult, it would still be nice to ask him.) Weird.

They really wanted Vanessa Marano to do her best Frida look, eh? I do think they even beefed her eyebrows up a bit. I hope Bay still gets her scholarship, but was glad at least, that they didn't make her miss the interview as "punishment" for drinking too many shots/groping Travis. She definitely owed Travis an apology. I'm ready for her to seriously be done with Emmett just so she can get some dignity back. Though honestly, I'm kind of sad and confused as to why the show destroyed Bay and Emmett the way they have. Especially if it's only to hook Bay up with a different lead character. I forget how incestuous TV shows tend to be sometimes. I like Travis a lot but I'm not sure I'm feeling Bavis. Lol. Won't it just be kind of like Bay/Tank all over again? Bay certainly seems Not That Into Him.

Maybe I'm one of the few but I haven't really wanted Bay back with Emmett since he cheated.

I also don't know so many people don't think Bay could like Travis. Bay has on more then one occasion said something about Travis being attractive. And beyond looks they have a nice friendship that would be a great and HEALTHY base for a romantic relationship

I'm rooting for Bay and Travis to be end game honestly as I think it could be written as a refreshingly sweet and respectful love.

My issue with Travis and Bay is that neither girl on this show can have more than 2 scenes with a guy without him falling for her.

That, and they're really nearing critical mass on the soap opera style romantic drama at this point. Travis has now been interested in both Bay and Daphne, both of whom have been involved with Emmett. Travis has something of a father/son type relationship with John. Emmett cheated on Bay with Toby's girlfriend. Daphne and Melody both hooked up with Chef Jeff. I swear, we'll find out that Skye is Tank's cousin or something, and this whole thing will collapse in on itself.

I have had a lot of patience with Emmett -- at his best, he was a supportive, loving boyfriend to Bay who shared many of her interests and knew what she liked. I understood why he ended up in bed with Toby's girlfriend -- it was a terrible idea but I could forgive it as a first lapse. Hollywood Hipster Emmett is dreadful -- and his actions (beyond the movie about how bad he felt because his girlfriend was accused of being sexually assaulted) will require a LOT of loving, supportive behavior - to me as a fan, let alone to Bay.

Travis is in rebound and, of course, Tank is back next week -- neither of these are right for Bay. She should go to Italy, find herself, and pick up a handsome Italian on the way. And, she shouldn't be in too much of a hurry about it.

As for Daphne of the Miracles, she really should stick with things: her future career, her college course, her boyfriend. Her middle name is certainly not Loyalty.

I think is the show where I realized how over I am personally rating people on number scales. Maybe it's because I'm getting older but I just don't like judging people that way. Travis has a lot to offer a girl. Bay has a ton of faults. Far from over perfect. Very pretty yes but there should be more to dating or even attraction than that imo. It's why I didn't have a problem with Tank in the first place. I also have no problem with friends falling each other. Honestly, I think that's the best way to fall for someone. Truly getting to know them first.

I think part of why I get so frustrated at the way the characters act is that they're all so old IRL (and look like it), I expect them to act more like it. I have to remind myself they're supposed to be what, 19? That excuses some of the stupidity of how they act, but not too much.

Hehe. This made me laugh. They're definitely veering into BH90210 territory. Ryan, Katie, and Lucas are going to be 28, 29, and 31 come November, while Vanessa and Sean are 22. Vanessa's turning 23 on Halloween.

I try not to think about anything age related regarding the characters though as it reminds me of the timeline that isn't on this damn show. A whole lot of time passes in a few episodes here in the land of no time.

To paraphrase one of my idols, I am so over Daphne and her magical Deafie vagina.

Emmett and his weird jeans shorts and his pouts and his anime stickers - I'm not into it, I don't like the Frida/Diego parallels, but if they helped Bay move on, cool.  I don't like Skye now that they're together.

I do like Travis. I do like how he emotes, how he's grown as a character, and that he can play shades of meaning. I don't like that he's into Bay, but Bay's over the top flirting with Travis just cracked me up.

The missing-the-Frida-interview & subsequent chat was asking too much suspension of my disbelief, but I still kinda liked it. It's always good to see Bay smile.

Gabe was almost as annoying as Melody this time, which was too bad. I feel meh about their storyline.

If I remember right from my long-ago sign language class... Mexican Sign Language is it's own language.  Daphne uses American Sign Language & wouldn't automatically know MSL signs, even if she speaks fluent Spanish.

I don't think it mattered that she taught the deaf girl the English/ASL word for "dog" - the point was for the girl to have her "Helen Keller Moment" and grasp the concept of language.  If the girl began attending the sign language class, she'd learn the dialect used in her community; that doesn't mean she could transfer to Carlton next semester and easily converse with the ASL kids. (Though on this show, a big smile from Daphne could probably make it all happen seamlessly.)

the girls are friends and so I could see that as a betrayal to MB.

Are they really? One wouldn't know it from how infrequently they bring Marybeth on as a friend to Bay. That's a big problem with so very many shows, they don't want to pay an extended cast so they have these very small, tight circles of friends in which everyone eventually ends up dating nearly everyone else. Thus it comes across as unhealthy, weird and incestuous as mentioned in the comments here. Damn, shows, just give a few extra actors some work why dontcha? And if they don't want to write in scenes with other friends, coworkers, students, whatever, then at least make mention of them as if these people had an existence outside of their tiny circle. But that's neither here nor there and an ongoing beef of mine with almost all family drama type shows (Parenthood, for one, with those annoying Bravermans who were the center of their own universe)

Back to the original topic of Travis as a love interest. It sure would be nice to see friends of opposite sexes remain simply friends for once. But the network must play to their audience which apparently demands new hookups with an insatiable appetite and can't survive on a diet of drama about interesting things other than romance.

ETA. On a very surface note, I can't stand Katie Leclerc's little wrinkle nose smirk thing she does in so many scenes. It's super annoying and takes the place of actual emoting. I find her a very poor actress, IMO.

I think the issue was more that she could have been speaking to the hearing people, like Pati's mother, who were there with the deaf person getting the hearing aid. Rather than have to call to aid worker guy who she wants to be when she grows up. (At least that's her career goal THIS week.)

While I am not necessarily a fan of a Bay/Travis hookup (I've only recently warmed up to him), I do hate how shows cater to this idea of "first couple wins" and "OTP" nonsense perpetuated by the fans on social media, especially when the relationship has turned toxic and played out. Bay/Emmett used to be my favorite pairing on this show. They started out nicely and not super obvious and naturally progressed, so their hookup was a nice surprise. After he cheated, the couple was tainted for me, but not irrevocably damaged. If Emmett groveled enough and gave Bay time, then I could accept them back together. By the time they did reunite I was pretty bored of the show in general, so while it was nice to see, I didn't really care that much anymore (and it resulted in her cheating on someone else). Now, IMO, Emmett is a complete jerk ass and has been for many seasons, so I'm not at all adverse to the idea of Bay eventually moving on from him 100% either as a single gal, or with a new guy, or even Travis if the case may be.

I guess the real reason Emmett must be stuck to Bay for life is because the writers have failed in four years to make him have truly viable story lines and character away from her. Again, that is a big mistake a lot of shows and writers make today: satellite love interests who exist not as entities in their own right, but solely to be a love interest. If Emmett truly lost ties to Bay, if they were truly over, Sean Berdy might end up unemployed at this point. Can he survive on his own? I don't know. Bay can and she has, and hopefully she will. I am tired of the merry-go-round and want my girl to be free.

I believe that Bay became an adult in this episode. She realized that her fit of jealousy was stupid and she apologized for it. Bemmett is finished - NEVER to be revived.

I'm trying to remember the last guy that came into Daphne's orbit and didn't fall for her. There must be at least one, but for the life of me, I can't remember any.

That girl's got the gift!

The Senator she blackmailed ? and got away with doing so... I don't think he was infatuated with Daphne but it was a while ago so I may be misremembering.

I stopped watching a while back, I got sick of Daphne's self righteousness and chronic entitlement among the repetitive romance storylines.

In regards to Daphne speaking or not speaking Spanish, she did say at some point in this episode that she didn't know how to read lips in Spanish.  It seemed like they were trying to say that she could speak it (and presumably read/write), she just couldn't understand spoken Spanish because of the lip reading issue.

Whether that is consistent with the rest of the series, or even possible, I am not sure.

Wow...I think I'm way off in the left here.

Daphne doesn't peg me as the "Miss Saint Mary" gal of the bunch, she actually seems pretty normal to me. Grew up poor and deaf and still managed to be a rock star on the academic front so it sort of makes sense that the whole, "I have to work" thing doesn't fly for her. Yes, she was a little too judgmental in those grey area places but towards the end of the episode she clearly had a reason to be.

I was actually feeling sort of bad for the Mother until she blamed Daphne for her daughter's continued deafness. They said they would, "see what they could do." What part of that sounded like "I am clearly made of magic and one swift breeze shall cure all." WTF?

Daphne's an over-achiever which can be annoying but she's kind, has a good decisive head on her shoulders, and works hard. (She's not my favorite character but I don't hate her either)

Bay is the one who give me, "I'm a special snowflake" feels.-_- ALL DAY LONG.

She acted like a complete psycho this episode and though her apology was very heartfelt and actually made me tear up a little (haha) it was still a very, "Holy crap!" moment watching her fiddle through Emmett's text messages (side note: I really don't think anyone would leave their phone unattended in a foreign country...that rarely happens while people are in their home countries so...) and actually send a message to her ex's new gf. O_o

I'm a little disappointed in the Travis/Bay development because I agree- why can't Bay meet people outside of her circle? She's not on house arrest anymore so it's not as if she can't meet a nice fellow at an art exhibit or something. So far the only guy she's been connected to who didn't have a thing for Daphne first (or second) has been Tank and that...did not end well. (Both Emmett and Travis liked Daphne (romantically)first and Bay's ex from the first season also liked Daphne-and Ty already loved Daphne (like a sister)/Noah also had a thing for Daphne.

Daphne's has had an interesting array of love interests so it makes me scratch my head a little when I realize that Bay has only been with one guy who wasn't in some shape or form connected to Daphne...weird.(Not counting the brief fling with the mysterious Alex lol)

....Wow, just read over what I wrote and realized that Bay does sort of get screwed over alot....and I didn't even throw in the whole Angelo situation, Regina not really bonding with her, Zarra, Emmett first cheating, switching schools, taking the fall for Daphne, ex-bf pretending to cheat on her....poor Bay-_-
