"I loved the series but the music one was a bit of a disappointment. "

The time that The Seventies spent on disco seemed excessive considering the frivolity of most of its songs (Disco Duck, anyone?) With the exception of Donna Summer and The Bee Gees, most disco songs were forgettable.

The five minutes spent on punk rock, on the other hand, was insufficient. For those who may dismiss punk as just spiky hair and safety pin-secured clothes, the music left a great legacy. The Sex Pistols influenced Nirvana and The Ramones influenced Metallica and Pearl Jam.

I haven't watched this yet, but five minutes on punk rock? C'mon! Why?!

I basically enjoyed the music installment, but that may be chiefly because I'd read the comments here first, so wasn't expecting much. If I hadn't been prepared for the punk/new wave movement being shoe-horned into the last five minutes like an afterthought, I likely would have been left very pissed off. Some of the choices are head-scratchers. Why was there a seemingly 15-minute clip of Cat Stevens in concert? Okay, it was only maybe a minute, but it was a minute more than Queen got, and they were hugely influential in the 70's, and ever since. I didn't mind the emphasis on the disco era. It wasn't just about music, the whole disco thing defined pop culture for a few years. It couldn't be avoided in the late 70's, it was all-pervasive. You had to be there.

CNN has to air an hour long special report, one on one with Donald Trump interviewed by Jake Tapper.

The color of Trump's hair is blinding.

I believe that last year CNN was going to do a documentary on Hillary Clinton and the republicans cried foul so the whole thing was called off.

Why can't Trump get his own channel?  It would be huge, terrific, you'll love it.

I do wish they did an episode on film in the 70's. It was a pretty big decade for it. Don't think they touched on it at all in any context.

I, too, was disappointed in the omission of film in the 1970's because a segment on The Godfather and its influence on later pop culture would have been compelling.  Wow, what a decade: From Willy Wonka to Blazing Saddles to Apocalypse Now.

Why can't Trump get his own channel?  It would be huge, terrific, you'll love it.

With his vast resources, it's doable.

I was there having graduated high school in 1976.  It's not a time that I look on with fond memories.  Maybe because I couldn't get my hair behave in Farrah Fawcett-like precision.  Damn my naturally curly hair!

I can't believe CNN can't find SOMEone to CONSISTENTLY anchor that 9p.m. hour like Larry King used to do. Is there NO one who can do that? Even a set team of consistently rotating hosts. (Please G-d NOT a panel of hosts. we get enough of that with The Chew. The Talk, The View. Heck,  there was some show with four or five women on it on some channel I saw on a TV in some waiting room I was in....that I'd never heard of or seen before. I think it's syndicated on Fox network. Of COURSE there was the black person, the hispanic, the white person (brunette) and a young white blond chic, I think..... SO Im NOT talking about those kinds of shows for CNN.)

But to have news one night, and a CNN special the next....it's just inconsistent. One night it's a docu-series on the t60s or the 70s....either last night or the night before it as some dumb special on firgging Morton Downey Junior...... WHO CARES! I know he launched the craziness of argumentative TV" and changed the civility on talks shows and almost single handedly was the reason the format exploded like it did....but do we really need a documentary on it? on CNN on a primetime weeknight?

CNN: Get a 9p.m. show that can ANCHOR your lineup. Find another "Larry King" who can do serious news -- AND celebrities, and human interest.  Some might say the hey-day for that show doing well at 9p is gone. I disagree. They just need the right HOST(ess). How about Soledad Obrien. Anderson, I take it, doesn't want to do it. I loved Don Lemon but I've SORT OF pulled back from suggesting him.  If you can't find ONE person...like I said ....go to the a different host each weeknight. Anderson on Monday, Don on Tuesday, someone else on Wed. and so on...and they can interview a celeb (like Larry did) -- OR if the night they're on there's a news story they can do that -- just as Larry did interviews on the news of the day as well. And I didn't even LIKE Larry King as an interviewer -- I use him and Anderson and Soledad as examples of people who can do light features  -- and HARD news interviews. That's all. (Larry actually sucked at it. But at least he fooled most viewers)

That sounds like the casting for a World War II movie.  I would love to see another talk show in the 8:00-9:00 CST time slot provided the host wasn't Piers Morgan or--shudder--Richard Quest!  I didn't care for Larry King because he fawned too much over celebrity guests.

Larry King wasn't bad when he was younger.  He did tend to fawn with celebrities, but so did Dick Cavett & it didn't really bother me because both were good interviewers.  Even when King was older & tended to fawn more, he wasn't a fool -- his interview with Paris Hilton immediately upon her release from jail after she'd served fewer than 5 days of a 45 day sentence was a sterling example of how to give someone enough rope to hang herself (paraphrasing):

Q:  How did you pass the time?

A:  I read the Bible every day [eyes modestly downcast]

Q:  What is your favorite passage?

A:  [silence, head swiveling around with a confused look on her face]

I actually miss his show the way it used to be, before he became too befuddled to keep track of what was going on from one segment to the next.  Toward the end, Anderson Cooper & Joy Behar occasionally filled in for him & I thought they were both excellent with every kind of guest -- I agree that Soledad O'Brien would do a good job, though she might not want to deal with CNN anymore.  I can't stand Don Lemon but there must be a lot of talented people available for this kind of role one night a week -- & the nice thing about rotating hosts is that we can watch those we like & skip those we don't.

About 5 minutes ago, an on-air reporter just used the phrase "Paddy Wagon"

I wasn't paying that close attention to the story, it was on in the background, but I distinctly heard "Paddy Wagon".

I think they still refer to those vehicles that carry multiple prisoners that way. Such as the one that Freddie Gray was put in. I could be wrong.

So. are you objecting to the use of it, or you don't know what that is?

You don't really say what the point of you post is.

What did CNN do to themselves? They were once the premier news channel, and now they are a joke, one step above MSNBC.

What happened was that CNN founder Ted Turner screwed up (or was screwed over), and lost control of the network when Time Warner merged with AOL.

http://www.businessinsider.com/ted-turner-wishes-cnn-had-less-fluff-2012-10

Business Insider, Oct. 18, 2012, "Ted Turner Reveals His Biggest Business Regret With CNN"

Turner was maneuvered out during the merger and lost his large stock position. In this interview, he said "I'd like to see more hard news and international news."

Me too! CNN used to be my go-to place for news. Now they are just flailing around. There is some decent news coverage during the day, but at night they seem to go for crime programs and fluff.

As for CNN Headline News, now little sister station HLN, I just want to cry when I think about how great it used to be. You could get fresh national and international news 24/7.

I have to rely on Google News now.

  • Love 4

^^ I know. When you look at what CNN used to be, used to show, cover and provide....it really is quite amazing how it's 'flailing' today.

BUT...then again, AMC, TLC, A&E, aren't the same. Does MTV do ANY music any more? And another stark example....for heaven's sake look at what BRAVO has become....from fine arts and film .......to the Real Housewives?

WOW - so happy to stumble upon this thread!  So many interesting posts, and I firmly agree with the majority of posters - what a concept!

It is sad that "Social Media" (the twats on tweeter, the "special yellow bus people" on Facebook - no I don't want to know if Kim Trashdasian North/South West is getting new butt fat or trimming her toenails) has erased the importance and fun of forums like this.

Okay, so regardless, CNN used to be the only outpost for pure News.  Now. NO.

It would be so cool to watch that Seventies Documentary y'all are talking about, but I never know when it is going to be on...could be 7:00 AM Saturday Morning or 2:30 PM Wed.Afternoon..Get a damn schedule CNN!  It is called running a business for God's sake.

Come on CNN.  Step-up to the plate!  You have a unique opportunity to take over what is being billed and fed to us as Main Stream Media. Grow some brain balls and steal talent if you have to...

How about Kennedy over at Faux News for the Larry Kingess type evening show?  Kennedy is smart, funny and really knows her topics.

Free Kennedy from the Fox Bleach Patrol - IMHO she gives great interviews and reporting.

ETA:  Please, please, please!  For the sake of all insomniacs like me, get those dippy International people to change their wardrobe out every so often...a little bit pretty sells.  That one young girl wears that same strange and troubling beige blouse with the "black hands?" on the shoulders every other night...and the Goth Girl needs to drop the black eyeliner from hell.

Peace.

Maybe we'll get lucky and they'll be a a missing plane...

and Richard Quest will be on it....

The more I see and hear from Bernie Sanders, the more he reminds me of RFK.

Oh, please don't say that.  The ultimate evil was done to RFK because he would've been the next president instead of Mr. Milhous.  We need Bernie alive and well and shaking hands with Hillary all the way up to November of 2016.

Best moment of the night.

That picture sums up one of the biggest differences between the D's and the R's.  The Dems' debate was not only substantive, it was civil.  Yay!  The image etched in my mind of the Repubs' "debate" is of that beady-eyed orange-faced narcissist bellowing about his poll numbers and Rosie O'Donnell and all the other candidates on the stage -- who he felt didn't even deserve to be up there with him.  It was like watching a bloated, deranged Oompa Loompa.  Thank you, Democrats, for being the adults in the room, for imparting actual information that affects our day-to-day lives and for showing the clown show on the other side how it's done.

Long Road to Hell America in Iraq was excellent.

I think every rep in congress that grilled Hillary in the mean disrespectful way they thought so appropriate and made them look so important, should be forced to watch this show.

I agree and it was a great summation of how it started and got us to where we are now.  I love Fareed!

I think CNN bought a dozen dresses in different colors for their female anchors!  They have all been wearing them!  They look great but is their new uniform?  LOL

They must be taking a page out of Fox's rule book, because that's their standard ploy.  Fox even extends it to their hairstyles.  I swear there are days you have to stare at the screen to determine which personality is on air...they all intentionally look the same.

  • Love 4

Have you no shame CNN? You're like ambulance chasers.

In order to keep almost your entire staff fully employed in Paris, you are now interviewing survivors of the attacks with stories of their tearful, harrowing experiences.

And Jake Tapper really hit a new low. Suggesting that the suicide bombers were really inept at what they were meant to do, because only one innocent was killed when they blew themselves up.

I have had to turn the channel. It's just not right.

  • Love 4

It seems with one attack after another they will remain in Paris forever??!?  The questioning of the victims seemed inappropriate and Clarissa Ward asking the 9 year old boy if that was the first time he had ever seen a dead body was a WOW but then Poppy commending her for asking the hard question, more WOW.  Every one of them seems more intent on getting Emmys than keeping us up to date.

On a very shallow note I liked Kate Bolduan's new hair today.

  • Love 2

Along with any thinking person, I deplore what's become of Ted Turner's brainchild.

Nevertheless, I must admit that the networks of my childhood, awash in distinguished journalists such as David Brinkley & Walter Cronkite, would never have entertained the thought of giving airtime to a pretty blonde named Poppy Harlow!  She's not perfect, but she's far better than the stereotype might lead one to expect, & it's good that at least she has a chance to prove herself.  Progress, I guess?

Yes to all of that - agree with you on KB's hair, but what is it with her attitude.  Good God that woman has a perm crinkled a'hole mouth on her prune face...how bad could her life be?  She has a cush job with a good salary, and yet. she seems to be assholes and elbows with the entire World...God what a downer.  Since CNN has no apparent schedule, you never know when old Kate will turn up.  But I turn it as soon as she comes on the screen. Ewwwh- what a dump.

Anyone watch The Hunting Ground last night? I don't have kids but I'd be terrified to sent my daughter to college these days. Or at least, without a four-year's supply of Mace.

After watching Independent Lens this weekend about a horrific gang-rape and murder of an Indian woman and then this, I think I need to look at pictures of kittens for awhile.

Wolf Blitzer is an ASS!  A 3rd grader could ask better questions than he does!

Reported by police in CA: 3 shooters on the loose (unknown)

WB:  So do we know their names?

And continuing to ask the same question over and over....he is on my last nerve today!

Agreed!!! Both Wolf and Don Lemon are horrible news anchors/reporters.   I would rather watch Wolf over Don though.... Don Lemon just pisses me off when I watch him.

But --- I do love Anderson Cooper!!  He's one of the only reasons I watch CNN.
