Hey ma and Pa Rodrigues how about you 2 work/save $ to help Philip pay for school/car?

Most parents let the kids work at 16 so they can save up for a car. Whatever the kid saves the parents match.

These 2 get F as parents. Philly is NEVER going to Hungary.

I see some sap giving Phil a car. Maybe Jonathan 🙄.

He also was apparently taking algebra and geometry as a senior? I know the exact math sequence can be a little different by state for high school, but isn't senior year either precalc or calculus usually?

Yep. I took algebra 1 in the 8th grade and geometry in 9th. And I wasn’t even very good at math. Jill still has no clue how behind her kids are.

Yup, algebra and geometry are freshmen and sophomore classes.

I think he did algebra-math (™Jill) last year. However, I doubt he moved on to geometry. Back in the dark ages, that followed algebra. I took algebra in 9th grade, being just average in math.

That's what I was thinking. I know some programs squirrel some more algebra into 11th grade and others have it wrapped up by then--and I get that difference. But he sounds substantially behind.

The announcement thing with with the little picture of the Hungarian flag saying "Missionary to Hungary", like Phillip is that already. Sadly, I doubt that will every happen. Jill will have a fight with the bible college long before poor Phillip ever finishes. Probably about the time he realizes he has to pay for the second term or gets poor grades the first term.

Lawson is married. No pics on SM. I'm guessing he hopes it gets picked up for a tabloid feature. He just loves the notoriety.

I wonder if he travels with a satiny pillowcase or wears a do-rag at bedtime.

What’s that book that was so popular a few years back? Some notion that if you just believed hard enough and envisioned your dream it would happen. The Something. Cannot remember the title. That’s Jill’s method of making “missionary to Hungary” happen.

Straight to the grift, expecting others to provide a car and tuition. Jill, commuting is driving back and forth you ignorant hack. Phillip should have been working as soon as it was legally possible. Let’s see what kind of lie Jill will come up with when Phillip fails miserably.

The woman has no shame.  She truly doesn’t.  I can’t imagine ever begging random people to pay my son’s tuition and buy him a car.  He has 2 parents who are unemployed, for Pete’s sake!!!  BME and GWE are lazy losers.

Jill and David don't seem to read the information from the schools, and I can only imagine what Best Mama/Papa Ever think the admissions people told them.

The school's Missions Degree is 96 hours, which is about 3 years. A bachelor's degree is generally 120 credits or so. The brochure says that this program is designed to prepare a student to enter a candidate school to become a missionary. If Phillip gets through the three years, he won't automatically be ready for Hungary. He'll have to go somewhere to study the language at least.

Money was a big problem with Tim's attempts at college, and it's going to be a problem for Phillip. How is he going to pay for tuition, fees, books, gas, food, a summer missions trip, and other expenses? Jill will get bored of grifting for Phillip, and he doesn't have any work experience we know of.

I wish him well and hope he enjoys his time at school, but the Rods are delusional. The whole family lives in Jill's crazy head.

Does Phillip's bible college offer classes in the Hungarian language?  Or does he expect to convert Hungarians by preaching in English?  What a deeply weird ambition.

Once Philly gets a job he will be expected to buy BME flowers and other gifts so I’m not sure how he will afford school plus a car. He is definitely being set up for failure and once again JillR will blame someone else. She and GWE are perfect parents in her mind, so it must be someone else’s fault.

American Sign Language is a requirement. That's kind of cool, but it won't help in Hungary. He will have to enter another program for the group who will place him in a missionary position. That's when he will study Hungarian or the language of wherever he can go.

I am sure Jill expects some one to give him a car outright. It has happened before. But the insurance, registration and all will have to be covered by phillip. I predict more grifting/whining from jill/phillip about the high gas prices making it so difficult for him to continue school.

Yeah for the serious college bound folks, Algebra 1 and often Geometry are taken in middle school, so by the time someone hits the end of HS, they are in Advanced Math/Pre-calc or Calc.  Not so much for folks on Phillip's type of trajectory.

Around here, when they got rid of the practical math courses for the non-college bound track, that track became Algebra 1A, Algebra 1B (they split the normal Algebra 1 course over 2 years for those folks), and Geometry to get a HS diploma, so I can see Geometry being his final math course since he isn't actually going to a real college.  As an aside, I really hate that they did the whole "everyone must take Algebra 1 and Geometry to graduate" thing here.  The topics covered there are not useful to most people's day to day lives unless they have gone into a scientific/engineering type of career track, which usually implies college.  Phillip, like a lot of non-college (or non real college) bound folks would have gotten more use out of those old practical math courses like consumer math (how to balance a bank account, how to calculate interest, how to figure out if you have grifted enough money for a new car) or applied math (how many gallons of gas does the lawnmower need, how many 2x4s do you need to buy to frame the new extension)  but states like mine made the Algebra-Geometry track mandatory for everyone.

It wouldn't usually apply for home schooling, but I also had to play scheduling games to fit all my courses in high school since there were some areas I needed to exceed minimum credits in order to be a good candidate for the university program I wanted to enter.  Like I didn't take foreign language 1 year, didn't take history a different year, didn't take comp sci a third year, so I was taking some "junior" courses in my senior year due to that.  There's an outside chance that during one of his supposed 4 years of HS, he didn't study math, and as a result he didn't get to the third and final year of the required courses until his fourth year.  Of course that requires far more foresight and planning than I think the family is capable of, so it is more likely it just took him that long to meet the minimums.

We knew a woman like that some years ago when our kids were in college.  My husband felt sorry for the woman and was all set to write a check.  I stopped him and said let her fill out the FAFSA like we did and work extra jobs and scrimp and save.  If we have extra money, it's going to our own college students.  He kind of blinked and went oh yeah.  I think that's how Jill does it.  She gets people so caught up in her story that some people quit thinking logically.  Like how did she get in this predicament to start?  Why isn't her husband working a regular job?  How can they take all these trips and eat out yet beg for tuition money?  She isn't the only one who takes people for a ride on the regular. More people need to wake up to Jill's tactics.

Jill is a narcissist and a con artist. She knows how to charm people into doing things in her best interests, not their own. Some people will eventually catch on, but others never will.

Isn't Jill's sparkling gold star level Plexus salary enough to at least cover Phil's tuition for a semester or two? She's always bragging about how profitable selling Plexus is. She managed to put some money toward Tim's attempts at school. Is Phil completely dependent on the grift?

I think she’s hoping to find someone wealthy who already has multiple cars they don’t use, or can easily give one away and write it off on their taxes. Those people are out there but do any of them follow Jill? She did once grift a free house, IIRC.

I'm hoping that perhaps they offer classes in the English language, BME seems to have skipped those.

To quote dear Phillip:

Quote

My childhood has taught me and provided me with many tools which have sufficiently built a motor of speed to be applied hastily to a lost and dying world.

So there.  Can't wait to hear that he's become fluent in Hungarian as it is clear English is not his language.

I sort of get what he wants to do.  One of my uncles became a Lutheran missionary.  He was #9 of 10 kids, and his father had died very unexpectedly when he was 5.  Money was tight in the family.  After High School he went to Business School and worked as a secretary, and he was a very good secretary.  Then he went to college to get his BA, and then 3 years of seminary before he could be ordained.  After ordination he went to Papua New Guinea and was there for over 30 years.  He did have to go to language school to learn Pidgin.  I'm saying this because I understand that Philip's desire may be very real, but it takes a lot of effort, and a lot of support from many, many people.  And you need an established organization behind you.  I'm sure the program Philip wants to attend is much less intensive, but you need an active network behind you for support.  Philip has no financial support, no real education, not even any transportation to get to class (and a mother who is nuts).  I think it is great that he has such great ambitions, and I think it is very sad that the odds of him reaching his goals are very, very slim.

Just to add:  in my uncle's case, having secretarial skills proved to be very useful in his work.  Much of his work involved translating and printing teaching materials for their schools and churches.

What ambitions are those really? To convert already Christian Hungarians? Can he even elucidate (in English) the differences between their religions and his?

Very good points.  Maybe he likes the fact that it is far from home and that his mother can't visit regularly.  I guess I just feel sorry for him because he does not have the resources or education to be able to fulfill any life dreams.  Or even how to have realistic dreams.  He is stuck.

I see Phillip's dream being shattered much like Derick and Jill"s. No real organization will sign on to sponsor Phillip because he is poorly educated, has never been away from mama, and doesn't know the language.  He should have been using a language app to get a start on learning Hungarian language as part of his home school and study time.

I doubt lack of higher level math will be a problem at his bible college.

I too, am saddened by the everyone needs algebra and geometry track in schools. I failed miserably at algebra in 8th grade. Back in the day I had to pick a math course each semester. In high school I took personal finance, bookkeeping and accounting (which were actually 2 different things) and business math which included bidding on a job, knowing your costs, percentages for markups on supplies used or sold, etc. With those classes I landed a co-op job at a local bank in 11th grade. My sister did the same.

I think he's in for an even worse rude awakening than they got. I imagine his trajectory will be pretty similar to Tim's and he will be trapped at home with BME in no time once the school opportunity suddenly and dramatically disappears.

Hate to rain on their parade, but, Hungarian is one of the most difficult languages for an English speaker to learn.  The FSI ranks it as a starred category four, meaning it takes somewhere between 1100 hours and 2200 hours of study to get "professional working proficiency (level 3)".  And that is "the average length of time for a student to achieve proficiency, though the actual time can vary based on a number of factors, including the language learner’s natural ability, prior linguistic experience, and time spent in the classroom."

I have somewhat of a natural ability for languages, a huge vocabulary in English, with an interest in etymology, speak Spanish (not perfectly, but, was an exchange student there), studied french for five years, and then took a Croatian course, which is only a "regular" category four (so not as hard as Hungarian), threw a TON of time and effort into it, and I only got to about a level 1.  I mean, good luck with Hungarian, guy.

Phillip probably believes that if he prays hard enough, he will someday wake up and miraculously be able to speak the Hungarian language.
