walnutqueen.......Even though we were discussing such a tragic event,  your comment about having the "sweats"  made me laugh.

 

MrsPeel.......I watched the coverage on The History Channel last night.  They called it the "102 Minutes That Changed America."  They also had another show on afterward about the 14 people pulled out of a stairway four hours after the first tower fell.  They made it down to the third floor when the building collapsed.  It was an amazing story and there were interviews with many of them.  Hearing their stories in their own words was so moving.

I think I've watched every single show about 9/11 ever made - several times.

 

AnnA - even in the midst of all that tragedy, I found the irony of sweating like a fucking blonde menopausal terrorist about to board a plane after 9/11 somewhat hilarious.  :-)

I was nearly at the end of a lovely vacation with my Mum; we were on the Sunshine Coast in B.C. Canada. I'd gone to the store early to get some juice and croissants for our breakfast, but, Canada, eh, the grocery store didn't open for another 15 minutes. So I was wandering around a drugstore half-listening to what should've been Muzak but was something about an attack on the World Trade Center. I actually wondered why these fucking lame Canadians would be replaying something about an old bombing from years ago. That is, until I got back in my rental car and heard it on the radio. I raced back to our motel and we were glued to CNN, until my Mum realized that my brother was supposed to fly out of Boston that very morning. It was hours of frantic worry before we learned he was safe, but stranded. The rest of our vacation was spent watching tv coverage in tears of disbelief and horror.

Mum and I pulled out our Canadian/American flag pins and Mum cleverly crafted little red, white & blue ribbons to them. We've worn those every anniversary since. We watch the reruns and coverage every year, too; and always talk on the phone on that date.

When I was finally able to get on a return flight to California in Seattle, I was in the middle of a full blown early menopausal flop sweat. Security was quite disturbed by a sweaty woman in a tank dress on a cold & rainy day, holding a little battery-operated plastic fan. They wanted to confiscate it, and I was in tears thinking I'd die of hot flashes on the plane ride home if they did. A kindly middle aged female security officer eventually made sure I wasn't hiding a bomb under my dress, checked the little mini-fan, and let me keep it. :-)

My brother was also flying out of Boston to Cleveland that morning. We were going nuts. We couldn't reach him. We finally heard from him the next day. It was a crazy time.

It's hard watching all the footage. It brings back such fear.

My thoughts go to everyone who lost someone.

It's like deja vu all over again (RIP, Yogi Berra). 

 

At 3pm I will be witnessing yet another loss - my "stray" Li'l Ole Man with Jackson Avery Eyes, whom I've been feeding and taming for almost 2 years, got a devastating diagnosis when I took him in for free neutering this morning, and he will be euthanized this afternoon.  Poor little kitty isn't likely to make it, no matter how much money (that I don't have) I could throw at all his problems; worst of all, he's suffering and in for a short lifetime of more.  I thought I had a reprieve from all the losses I've suffered (4 long time companion cats in 3 1/2 years); but I guess the Universe is preparing me for the inevitable loss of my Mum, who is getting sicker and weaker, too. 

 

I've got to get all my blubbery crying out of the way now, so I can be a soothing and calm escort to the Other Side later.  I'm so glad you guys are all here for me to vent with.  We've been through so much together, haven't we just?  I'm grateful to count you as true and steadfast friends with huge hearts of pure gold when it really counts. 

 

Preemptive virtual hugs to y'all, so I'm not inundated with the overwhelming "feels" later.  I am SO much better at giving support and affection than receiving it, eh!   :~)

Saying prayers for your dear mum and you. I lost my mom in 2012 and I'm still not over it.

So very sorry to hear about the loss of your furry babies! My son lost his cat Grumpy to kidney cancer this past winter and took in another stray cat. Little did he know his new cat was pregnant with 4 little ones. Mia his stray cat had four kittens and he recently gave us Red who has brought so much joy to our home. We also have a stray older car Nosey who we love dearly. Nosey is jealous of Red and we're hoping that decreases over time. We just spent over $1,000 to neuter all the cats and get them vaccinated, So I appreciate what it costs for these little loves of our lives.

Thank you all for sharing my sorrow.  It is a great comfort to me knowing you understand my grief and allow me to express it here.  We all have rough roads to travel, and for the most part, must walk them alone.  But it is still a great solace knowing they are roads well travelled.

Buried many animals in my time, so I completely understand your pure snubs walnutqueen. (pure snubs as in I cried so hard I got the pure snubs, which are those jagged breaths of deep sighs you take after you are done squalling your eyes out. It's a southern expression)

 

Hah, I've never heard that one before, stewedsquash.  I am currently afflicted with crylids - eyelids all swollen & puffy from crying ...

Thank you all for sharing my sorrow.  It is a great comfort to me knowing you understand my grief and allow me to express it here.  We all have rough roads to travel, and for the most part, must walk them alone.  But it is still a great solace knowing they are roads well travelled.

So sorry to hear of your loss, Walnut Queen - you're not alone.  I wish I could give you a hug.  Every time I lose a beloved dog I think it will get easier, but it doesn't.  We've lost five in the last five years,  so I feel your pain.  Take care.

We share sorrow and pain, Aunt Kiki, and it NEVER gets any easier.  But I think we would never know what joy really was if we didn't know it's opposite.  I am ever so sorry for all your losses, too.

 

I just hope somewhere, somehow all our dearly departed animals are bonding with each other much in the same way we are all doing so here.   Somehow, that is a comforting notion.

WalnutQueen, adding my thoughts and prayers to those of everyone else.  How lovely that you took care of this stray kitty for so long, and are going to be with him at the end.  I'm also so sorry to hear you and Aunt Kiki lost so many beloved pets in such a short time. I've lost 4, but spaced out over a number of years.

On another bulletin board I have been on for many years, we discovered by accident that 2 of us had  euthanized beloved pets on the same day - it was oddly comforting to know they went to kitty heaven together.

Thank you, Mrs peel.  A friend over on another Small Talk forum here had to euthanize her dog on the same day, as well.  I had the same notion as you did - because cats & dogs get long in animal heaven, eh.  :~)

Thanks, Walnut Queen and Mrs Peel - we love to adopt older dogs - some throwaways and others who are victims of circumstance - so in general our time is shorter with them than we would like.  Most of our babies have gone into their mid-teens so we feel very blessed.  My husband doesn't cry except when we lose a pet.  At our age we are now waiting for someone to find us rather than actively pursuing a new dog.  We have one who is now 14 who started as the baby of our pack at the time, and welcomed 3 more during his time with us.  So we will defer to him as to whether he wants some company for now.  We brought in a feral cat who was starving and nearly froze to death and he now rules the basement quite happily and is beginning to trust us a bit.   The dog and cat are curious about each other but we've wagered that the cat would clean the dog's clock if put in the same room.

That is really interesting - I never figured Simon to be the lawyer type.

 

I often wonder if Alex watched the Season 1 episode.   Obviously she didn't see how obnoxious and pretentious she came off as being.   JMO

I've always added the "apostrophe s" to proper name possessives ending in "s".

I found a reference to this usage at this writing tips site. They defer to the Chicago Manual of Style which is considered by many as an authority.

This quote is expanded upon at above link.

"The Chicago Manual of style once recommended a single apostrophe to form the possessive of Biblical or classical names.

Some guides still recommend this usage, but CMOS has changed its policy in a spirit of consistency; now it recommends that all proper names ending in -s form their possessive by adding ’s."

Somehow "Brooks's cancer"  just doesn't look right.

 

I still use the old school way, too, AnnA.  This old dog is just too tired to learn new tricks.  ;-)

Just popping in here to say I can't wait for NYC. I always end up growing weary of the discussion on BH. Way too many in the BH forums fixate on talking about the most irritating castmember, and the bitching just gets TIRED. First Kim and Brandi, now Yo. I find them annoying as the next person, but I get no enjoyment from constantly talking about them. There's only so many times I can discuss how Brandi is a loose cannon, Kim is a mean alcoholic, and Yo is a condescending attention whore.

The NY women (with the exception of Naked Man Gate) are usually so much more enjoyable to discuss; the conversation usually doesn't fixate on one topic for as long nor does any one HW seem to generate the amount of circular conversation. Come back to me NYC!

I use the wipes. If there are none, I'll try to get a cart that has been outside - the germs and viruses don't to well in unless they are in a warm and wet environment.

With all the new illnesses that are showing up from time to time, sometimes I wonder how much it really helps?

Not a fan of anti-bacterial wipes etc. I think they are part of the problem. Like antibiotics. I'm pretty much a running water person. (The b-day song...)

And, imho, money is the filthiest of all.

Money?  People still handle money!  I'm joking but kind of not.  It's all about the 'points' on the credit card.

 

I will use the wipes at the supermarket if they're there to wipe the handle.  Just because who knows who used that cart before me.   I'll also use my little bottle in the car when I'm done with shopping.  And after I'm home and things are put away, the hands get washed...thoroughly. 

 

It's too bad when people get a virus, so many of them go running off to the doctor for antibiotics.  This is huge part of the problem.  Especially with their kids.

Holy shitballs!  I was surfing the channels looking for something relatively inoffensive to watch, and instead found Kelly Killoren (looks like she has shed the Bensimon/beensomeone miniker) on HSN shilling 'her' jewelry....I even watched for a nanosecond or two to be sure it was she....I did not see any owls, however....and I could NOT believe it was the same satchels of gold, cokedup/whatever she was on/ bitch from nyc of years ago, but there she was....actually looking somewhat sane...note to self...MUST stay away from HSN!
