Small Talk: The Prayer Closet

This is a reminder that the Politics Policy is still in effect.

I understand with recent current events there may be a desire to discuss political social media posts of those in the Duggar realm- this is not the place for those discussions. If you believe someone has violated forum rules, report them, do not respond or engage.

Political discussion is not allowed in this forum- this includes Small Talk topics. Please stay in the spirit of the policy- I have noticed a tendency for some to follow the letter but not the spirit.

I was just watching House Hunters and at the end of the episode the lady said this is the new season of our life and I was wondering when the Duggars and House Hunters had a crossover episode.

With the wedding activity on Josiah’s thread, I thought it would be a fun topic to share our wedding stories. Anyone game?

1st (ill-advised) wedding at age 20. 200 guests, big Catholic deal. MIL 45 minutes late to ceremony. Should have taken the opportunity and run for the hills.  I had no business getting married. Stubborn as I was, it lasted five years.  Did not enjoy the day.

2nd wedding at age 31 after I’d grown up and figured out who I was. Had finished my degree, established career, had my own house. It was a family only celebration at a local conservatory.   We celebrated twenty years last month.

Hoping our our kids don’t rush to the altar. Also hope they have low key events if/when they decide to marry.

The mods didn’t like where I posted it (understandable) so I changed it to the Health and Wellness (at their suggestion) threads and hopefully it should show up in a few days. In the meantime we have this thread.

I will look for it.

Haven’t seen it. I’ll assume it’s an incontinence product?

I think it's 'Pee Proof Panties' and it's a product called Icon.  They make women's underwear with extra padding in the crotch to catch leaks.  It supposedly wicks moisture away from the skin and has some sort of anti-odor treatment.  I've heard they work fairly well for women who don't like pads.

I’m going down wedding memory lane...  someone wondered if Mrs Siah  was going to look back in 20 yrs and rue her choices for this day... OMG, YES!!!!  Of COURSE she will, she will look back and wonder whyyyyy did I DO that???  And here’s how I know this:

my first wedding was 1977.  I was 17.  [and therein lies the first of my ??? moments].  We were dedicated, dyed in the wool Baptists when Baptist was only an eyelash above Mennonite.  But for some reason, my parents were absolutely content to let me get married.  At 17.  Secondly, I made my bridesmaids dresses, and my mom made my dress.  My mom was an AMAZING seamstress and I picked the pattern, the fabric.  Princess Diana got married a couple years later, and our dresses were a similar style, although hers was a royal version.  I had ENORMOUS, GIGANTIC poofy sleeves.  Huge!  I had little pin tucks up a bodice, topped with little pearls.  I vividly remember  that dress being the talk around town - that my MOTHER made that amazing dress.   And it was amazing for that time, and amazing she made that sucker... like a huge overblown circus costume.  Now when I look at pics, I see my little tiny 5’1” self (elf) in that beast and I see...SLEEVES!  Those exaggerated HUMONGOUS pooped out sleeves.  Didn’t matter what the rest of the dress had going on... the pictures all scream SLEEVES!!!   In a very low bar attempt to salvage ANYthing a 17 year old would say about her wedding in 1977.

the reception - in 1977 it hadn’t gone popular to have a dinner at a reception.  We still assumed cake and lunch.  A long decorated serving table (no Pinterest, so a vase of flowers).  We ordered the cake.  Everything else was gathered and presented by myself and my mom.  Simple, low budget.

How much would I change?  Allllllll of it.  Starting with the year.  WHOOOOO lets their daughter get MARRIED at 17???  A 17 year old may have delusions about the peace and picket fences, grace, forgiveness, flowers on the table, setting up house, etc.  my perspective now is completely different.

Sorry because this is a bit off topic. If you go under the Health and Wellness threads you’ll find the one that I began for aches and pains. I had previously tried to start it in the wrong area but it’s finally up now.

I’m done with Facebook. People are so mean and cruel.

I made a comment stating that the kids name should have been spelled traditionally. (Think Trystiin vs. Tristan). And I wish him luck in the future.

i was called troll, told that they prayed I would get assaulted and die etc. and those were the “nice” comments.

im canceling Facebook today.

UGH!!! I have a lot more sympathy for the veterans and others with PTSD and anxiety issues after last night. The fireworks were causing my anxiety to kick in. I wanted to run outside and start yelling at people who were setting the darn things off. Some of them were way too loud. I covered my ears and kept saying make them stop and taking slow breaths in order to calm down. I took my one PRN med to help me sleep because I knew the fireworks would bother me, but I still had a hard time sleeping.

I am a little better, but sometimes it is hard. Last Friday I was driving by myself, and my anxiety was kicking in. It was hard being in the store by myself. I could not focus and understand why I was there and being around strangers was scary. Saturday morning I went out by myself to run an errand, and the same thing happened. By the time I went home the anxiety was kicking in and I was ready to fall asleep while I was driving. I do not drive right now because I do not want to get too sleepy and/or too anxious. I hate not being able to go out by myself right now. I will be going to see a psychiatrist for medication monitoring and other issues related to my anxiety and depression along with seeing my counselor. My wonderful physician assistant suggested it. I felt a little bad about it, but she said do not feel bad about it because she is not a specialist. The good news is I have been told it probably will be best not to have any contact with my family. My mother called a week ago going on and on about herself. I think she was hinting around I should be taking care of her. Sure...Get me a room in the inpatient mental health care facility at the local hospital because I will probably be on the way to a nervous breakdown if I spend anytime trying to help her out. It was scary enough last week when I felt I was heading to a nervous breakdown, and I do not want to end up in the same place again.

I’m sorry to hear that people were mean to you. I don’t do Facebook. I just never wanted to put my life out there for others to judge. You strengthen my decision and I hope that you will be happier now that you don’t have to read distressing comments about yourself.

@bigskygirl It’s probably a good idea for you not to drive right now until you get a handle on your meds and anxiety. Does your spouse drive? Perhaps you could just start out on short outings with someone driving who you trust. Stores can be a source of anxiety for me too. I’m pretty little and people seem to think it’s ok to bump me out of their way. I’ll look at them and give them a big excuse me. As I live in a tourist town summers can be especially distressing but I know rentals are from Saturday to Saturday so I try to shop on a Thursday. I’m glad that you are getting some professional help and hope that you will be making some good progress soon. I wish you well.

@Mindthinkr My husband has been taking to my appointments and to run errands. The weird thing is I can feel my anxiety kicking in when he is driving, but I also get tired easily to the point I want to sleep. It is probably partly due to the side effects from the medications I am on. I was told to close my eyes and take nice slow relaxing breaths when someone else to driving. It helps, but I still get a little nervous.

And speaking of Facebook, some of my family members drive me crazy because they post their political views in order to get others to agree with them. I usually roll my eyes and delete their posts.

Bigskygirl, I hope this is not being to forward but have you tried meditation ? I use the Calm app for the sleep stories but it has a lot of guided meditations for different things.

@crazycatlady58 you are not being forward. My counselor has suggested breathing exercises and to tell myself I am safe and everything is fine. Right now we are working on getting me out of the house more by going for walks and finding ways to help with the anxiety. It has been a week since I started the one medication for the anxiety and depression, and the one PRN medication for insomnia since the anxiety can kick in before I go to bed. It is definitely a work in progress one day at a time situation.

You just keep taking baby steps forward how ever you feel comfortable. You do know your own self and what you can and cannot do. Slow and steady wins the race. You are a tortoise and will win the race.

Just an FYI - I have SIL and her 2 teens visiting us for the next 9-10 days, so I'll be offline a LOT.  They were supposed to land at 830 pm our time, but due to weather problems and then missing the connection they have just now landed at 12:30 Am - about 45 minute drive back and stopping at a 24 hours Mel's Diner for FOOD!  I will meet them there, hubby took the rental van to pick them up.  They changed plans and came out a month earlier than we had talked about which means I've just finished scrubbing the kitchen floor, but my yard and multiple projects currently in the works aren't done.    This is going to be fun, in many ways.  Tomorrow we have a 10 am appt at an Apple store to replace teen boy's cell phone that he dropped into cooking ramen 2 days ago.  Urgh.  COFFEE!!!

I woke up every few hours last night to check on the efforts to rescue the Thai football/soccer team. I’m so glad the first four made it out ok. I hope the rest make it out safely. I’ll be following their progress again tonight. I feel terrible for the family of the rescue worker who died a few days ago.

It's just incredible the amount of planning, equipment, teamwork and plain old praying that it has taken to get the first four out.  I guess the divers need to rest and they need to restock supplies before they can try to bring the next group out.  God bless everyone who has worked so hard to help those kids.

I thought it would take months to get them out? I stopped watching the news during the presidential election so just know what is posted on Facebook on my news feed. I am so happy that it seems to be moving faster.

They thought it might take months if they had to drill a hole through half a mile of rock into the roof of the cave to lift them out.  This was considered to be the safest way to get them out since none of the boys could swim, let alone use scuba equipment.  However, the monsoon season is approaching and the entire cave is very likely to flood soon, meanwhile, the amount of oxygen available to breathe in the air is dwindling.  So, while the scuba/swimming rescue was considered to be potentially the most dangerous, it was really the only option to get them out before they either ran out of oxygen or the caves flooded completely.  They expect it to take a few more days to get all of them out and there are heavy rains in the area, so we need to keep praying.

I read that they brought the weakest 4 first, good decision.  You know their families were euphoric!  Also someone mentioned at dinner last night they’ve considered medicating the children.  Risky, but hmmmm.  I expect when it’s all said and done, we’ll hear all the stories.  I’m really glad they removed media and non-essential resources to get this done.  Thailand must have big kahoonas to remove media.  In the US, they’d be staging a protest and screaming America has a right to KNOW!  And you know, sometimes, that’s just secondary.  Guh, I hope and pray the outcome for all is just as good as the first.  Good job, rescue team!!!

Me too on all counts. The cave is so complicated and of course made worse by the water. What brave rescuers and brave rescuees.

Today the San Francisco Giants baseball team brought up a young player named Steven Dugger.  He did very well in his first game, and I am looking forward to watching him and his baseball progress (I'm a huge Giants fan).  But at the same time it makes me so sad for all of JB and Mechelle's kids.  They have never, and will never, have the chance to play in organized sports  and experience the joy of belonging to a team, and they will never learn the valuable life-lessons that are gained from working with others.  If I remember correctly, JB took some of the kids to a minor league game once and tried to explain how baseball works.  Unfortunately, he had no idea what was going on, and the kids looked totally lost sitting in the stadium with strangers around them.  But I guess I shouldn't be surprised.  Supporting your children in team sports takes time, effort, and the desire to do the best for each of your children as individuals.

I’m so happy that we all can come together and pray for something as a whole...getting those children out of the cave system safely. Because we are so busy praying for others I pray for all of you too. I can’t imagine what it feels like to see your child emerge safely from a dire situation like that. Bless all of the tireless workers, their support systems, their families (of the workers and trapped children alike) and those that donate time or money to the cause.

I just read a BBC article that said it was thought the 4 WEAKEST boys were rescued first.  CNN said it was the 4 strongest boys going first.

So were all right!  I just hope I wake up to more good news, like Sunday morning.  I felt so happy this morning reading about the successful rescues.

I don’t feel like we’re figting, just discussing different things we’re hearing, seeing and reading.  Makes me feel right at home to know y’all are all as obsessed as I am.  I can hardly stand to think of the anguish those families are feeling.  I actually heard earlier in the week that the strongest would “probably” go first, I assumed to give the others more time to learn.   It was BBC where I read the weaker ones went first.  (And if it’s in print, it has to be true, right?) ?  For me, I was encouraged when I believed the weaker ones went first because I thought if the weaker ones got out, the stronger ones chances must be greater.  In the end, It won’t matter at all who goes first or last, as long as they all get out.

5th boy is out. Unconfirmed reports on Twitter that 6th is out also.

CNN is reporting that the healthiest came out first but I have also seen reports that say the opposite. Either way, I hope they get the rest out safely and as soon as possible.

Eta: 4 more successfully rescued today.  So 8 of the boys are out.  The last 4 and the coach will have to wait at least another day

It seems to be going exactly as planned.  Kudos to the cave divers, engineers, military and medical personnel who obviously developed a very good plan on short notice and have thus far executed it to perfection.

I've read different things about the caves and have seen diagrams and footage.  I'm still trying to envision how the coach and boys got there to start with, even if there was no high water at the time of their entry.  It sure seems like an intricate journey.  I sure wish them well.  Whenever, I read a headline about it, I hold my breath.  ONLY good news please.

Learning to survive with your team members? Still I don’t think that the coach ever meant for this to happen. The boys will be bonded for life but their health, healing and PTSD might prevent them from having normal lives for some time.
