Jeopardy! Season 40 (2023-2024)

Jeopardy giveth and Jeopardy taketh away. After a really good game yesterday, today was one to forget.

Two good categories in the J round. Got 4 in "Dining Out in New York" and "Smoke". TSs were across the board and Tribeca.

Only one good category in DJ, even though I did marginally better in that round. Got 4 in "You Shouldn't Have Left the Couch" and the TSs of bamboo and half a loaf. I credit knowing bamboo to the Cariloha stores I've seen in ports on various Caribbean cruises I've been on.

Well at least I got my first FJ of the week. Old Faithful was a big time instaget. I seem to remember there being a schedule of when it was expected to go off. And it looks just like the pictures - Yellowstone is a beautiful place.

Now to hoping I feel smarter watching Celebrity Jeopardy.

Not a great game…In J! I missed one each in The 1600s, Shiny Things, and Smoke, two in Mirrors, and three in A Day at the Races and Dining Out in NY. In DJ I missed one in Crisis Mode and You Shouldn't Have Left the Couch, two in Rock & Roll Bookstore, Fabric, and 3 Little Words, and four in Abraham, Isaac, Jacob.

But FJ was an instaget!

TSes: (J had 5; DJ had 3 + 1DD) All I got was across the board and bamboo.

Total instaget for FJ tonight, which saves me from being skunked this week!  When I visited there many many years ago, it "missed" an eruption, going almost two whole cycles between.  People were freaking out.

I also got the TS of claiming race, TriBeCa, and the board.

My long Covid-addled brain surprised me by actually recognizing one of the contestants (Sam).  Other than that, not much to say about tonight's show.

Steven Weber was impressive on Celebrity Jeopardy.  He totally overthought his missed DJ, giving an educated guess rather than the obvious correct answer.

(Is this the place to talk about Celebrity Jeopardy?  Did anyone else watch it?  Was it even new?  Comcast says it was, but they're often wrong in my market.)

Decent J round - could have been really good if I hadn't tanked the "It's Our Time to Sack Rome!!!" category. Ran "Isms" and got 4 in "Rocket Man", "Culinary Quotes", "Auntie Up" and "Let's Play Cards". TSs were feminism, bouillabaisse and 48.

Didn't do quite as well in DJ, but I did get 4 in "Music Terms" and "House Hunters Intergalactic". One TSs - chipmunk.

No FJ today, but had a "duh!" moment when I heard the correct response.

Not too bad today, except the sports category. Ran three categories in J! - ISMs, Auntie Up, and Let's Play Cards; missed one in Culinary Quotes and three in It's Our Turn to Sack Rome, and completely failed Rocket Man. In DJ I again ran three categories - House Hunters Intergalactic, Air Apparent, and "Unk" in the Trunk; missed two in Philosophies and Presidential Actors? and four in Music Terms.

FJ was an instaget. 

TSes: (J had 4; DJ had 2 + 1DD) I got 48 (wild guess; I know nothing about Pinochle), bouillabaisse, feminism, uranium, chipmunk, and Plato (DD).

Sam's Final response cracked me up, but I'm glad Josh didn't pull a Cliff Clavin. Congrats to Josh. I was kind of rooting for him, but I liked all three of these folks and would have been happy with any of them winning.

Instaget FJ for me tonight, and I loved Sam's FJ response.  I was rooting for either Sam or Josh because Lucy's vocal fry was killing me.  

I also got the TS of 48, bouillabaisse, feminism, and chipmunk.

Whew!  This was my first time watching Jeopardy since the Masters Tournament and I certainly am rusty.  No TS's but I did get quite a few and am proud to say I got FJ (it really wasn't all that difficult...maybe for women?)

For a mere $200 in a category about 'isms, they were given "The belief in the need to secure rights & opportunities for women equal to those of men" and couldn't come up with feminism?!  At $2000 I'd abide all three thinking "It can't be that simple, can it?" and not ringing in, but at $200?!  I guess because, while it was the lowest-value clue in that category, it was the last one they got to, they weren't in the right mindset.  But good grief.

I am a very old Jennifer (the name really didn’t become common until I was 15, after Love Story). So I got this but the name went from Guinevere to Winnifred to Jennifer historically. So I could have tripped up in a classic “knew too much” way.

Just two ts's for me, bouillabaisse, and feminism but I did fairly well throughout the game.

I got Guinevere pretty much immediately, but to be honest, I'm not sure I could have spelled it correctly while under pressure. LOL

Pretty fair game for me, overall. I got all the "ism" answers - though I admit I paused at feminism, I'm not sure why.

Last night's FJ was the instagetiest of all instagets for me, one of the approximately 400 billion Jennifers born in the US between 1965 and 1985.  Seriously it was the #1 girl's name here between 1970 and 1984, and was top 5 from 1968 through 1988.  And my parents thought they were choosing an unusual name.  😕  They were slightly ahead of the curve, but there were still at least 2 other Jennifers in school with me from 1st grade onwards.

Yeah, that was funny.  And while I was slightly rooting for Sam more, I was fine with Josh winning as he really deserved it.  Would've been okay with Lucy, too.  They were all good players and pleasant people.

I think maybe they were all overthinking that one and expected something less general than just feminism.  I hesitated slightly with my answer for that reason but went with the obvious.

I always wondered why Jennifer took off in 1970 and that explains it a little. But it had already been top 5 by 1968, so not entirely.

Likewise, I've been quite confused about these latest formats, so thank you, Ken The Magnificent, for succinctly and clearly letting us know what's up next.

Easy for me too, I wanted to name my daughter Jennifer in 1978 but there were so many around I chose Sara instead! Not that much better, I thing there were people named Sara or Jennifer in every class she had through school. btw I still gave her Jennifer as a middle name.

I thought having an entire category about the sacking of Rome was pretty funny! also the description of a bagel.

I was born in 1975; had a few Jennifers in my classes over the years. Before I bought my condo I had a roommate a couple years younger than me who is also Jennifer. 

I have a cousin who named his daughter Jennifer, but she was born in 1995...I guess she had slightly fewer same-named girls in her classes by then...apparently it was only #18 by then!

I thought I had heard her answer a couple of other times w/o her answer being in the form of a question, and they let it go, but then I chalked it up to not hearing correctly.  Glad to know someone else noticed.  Wonder why the production crew let the other incidents go w/o a penalty?

I believe they let it go in the Jeopardy round with a reminder to phrase it in the form of a question, but in the DJ round you don't get a reminder, Ken (or whoever) will just wait and if you don't catch yourself your answer is rejected when time is up.

This came up a year or two ago, and someone said that they edit out some of the "What is" parts to speed up the broadcast game.  I don't know whether that is true.

This is crazy. Although I always enjoy the TOC I am looking forward to regular games. 
I’m just glad the writer’s strike is over and all the champions will be competing.

they made the schedule before they knew exactly how long the strike would be going on.  I think I read that regular games would begin in April, but I could be mistaken.

For FJ, I couldn't think of anything but Burj Khalifa, so Khalifa was my answer.  Majal was obvious upon being revealed.

I got the missed clues of CD, Kramer vs Kramer, horse, mummy, Prince of Wales, Inside Out, Little Foxes, Cenozoic and Moxie.

I got the entire categories of body language, Justin and next right.

Not a bad end to the week. Ran Body Language, missed one each in We Made It, Not Your Average Opera, and Halloween Costume Ideas, and three in Sports Around the World (no surprise there). In DJ I ran Olde England and Good "P.R.", missed one in Family Drama, and two each in Amy Poehler is Awesome, What's Next?, and Houseplants.

FJ was once again an instaget (and finished out a perfect week!).

TSes: (J had 6; DJ had 11 + 1DD) I got horse, Doubt, Inside Out, cenozoic, The Little Foxes, Arthur Miller (lucky guess), living stone, basil, bromeliads, and Prince of Wales (DD).

O.k. but not great game to end the week. Got the same number of clues correct in each round, and my second FJ of the week.

In the J round I got 4 in "Not Your Average Opera", "Body Language" and "Halloween Costume Ideas". TSs were Doubt and the Mummy. I should have gotten Kramer vs. Kramer, but couldn't get it out of my poor old brain - "it's...it's...the one with Meryl Streep...damn". Funny that after that Meryl Streep was a correct response in DJ.

In DJ, I ran "Olde England" and "Good "P.R.". TSs/missed DDs were Prince of Wales (DD), Inside Out, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and The Little Foxes.

Another FJ instaget - my thoughts went palace/Asia/Taj Mahal/Mahal. Good way to end the week.

Another likeable group. 
I was cheering on Daddy TV Dave because I have an almost-two-year-old grandson with a smart Daddy/son-in-law. 

When I was young I wanted to live in the Taj Mahal when I grew up, so getting FJ was a nice consolation prize.

My only TS was The Mummy, which surprised me by being a TS, because I don't even like spooky stuff. But maybe these players do like the horror genre, and were too busy sorting through possibilities??

There seemed like too many TSs for 3 former champs (17!), but I guess it really depends upon the categories, which are random, right?
And I guess the selection of the 3 players is random too after the requirements are met? —so they might coincidentally share a lot of fields of knowledge.

I know it's always easier from the couch and all that, but "Hellman play" -> "The Little Foxes" (with the confirmation of "vulpine" in the clue) is such a trivia staple that all three of them should have been escorted from the stage right there and then.

Thank you, all who explained why we’re still seeing ex-champs brought back. I watched on YouTube because I wasn’t home at 7, and I thought “Didn’t we just do this?” when I heard the introduction.

I agree about the number of TS’s, especially in the plays category. I guess none of them are playgoers.

For FJ I knew it was either Taj or Mahal but couldn't decide which so I can't claim that as a get.

Taj Mahal translates to Crown Palace.

Jal Mahal is Water Palace, and Lal Mahal is Red Palace.

I was fortunate (or not) that my name wouldn't be found on any girl's list. Never encountered one in school - girls, anyway. Did encounter more than a few boys.

Me too! I'm not a fan of philosophy and this is pretty much literally the only philosophy and philosopher I remember and can put together in a flash. As a writer, I always identified with it, especially when the beautiful lines I wrote in my head were never exactly transferred to the page.

I spent most of the think music debating Taj vs Mahal, but then the clue said the same word "follows" Jal and Lal. So from that, I figured it was probably the second word so that it can follow the first, assuming the language would have a similar grammatical structure and that, like in English, the word meaning "palace" would come second.

Far from an instaget for me, given the above reasoning, but I got there just in the nick of time.
