Milestone Moments: All The Celebrity Vitals

Too many to count:

Piano Man is the best sing along with pals after a couple of drinks tune.

Just the Way You Are is a great romantic song

Uptown Girl if only because of Christie Brinkley looking so cute and flirty in the video

The Longest Time because, like Billy, I'm a big fan of doo-w**  songs

Goodnight Saigon for best tune in concert.  The helicopter sounds along with Billy bringing Viet Nam vets onstage to sing the chorus along with him was always so moving; especially since I grew up in that era.

Seen him in concert at least 3 or 4 times; first time in 1987.

The Longest Time, Uptown Girl.

I was just going to pick those as well. I have memories of hearing "Uptown Girl" as a kid while sitting in my living room and playing with my Fisher Price Main Street toy.

But yeah, "The Longest Time" in particular has always been a favorite. All the songs people are listing here are great. I've also always liked "River of Dreams".

"My Life" was a favorite for a long time after it first came out -- I was a tween/early teenager, and it just spoke to me.  "Go ahead with your own life, leave me alone."

I will always love "Piano Man" as one of my recital pieces back in the day.

"Just The Way You Are" is lovely.

It's hard to pick a single favorite!

Probably these for me, too. Also, We Didn't Start the Fire.

In addition to most of the above, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention 'We Didn't Start the Fire' (1989) as one of my fave Billy Joel hits. Yes, it mentioned virtually many historical highlights that the US experienced  from c. 1949 to 1989 [although oddly skipped a few years from 1972-  1980].

Anyway,  I was always impressed by Mr. Joel's ability to compose AND perform songs (and by copyrighting the lyrics in his own name, that means he's been guaranteed at least a portion of the royalties pie for his creations).

It's impossible to pick one, but I'll go with Piano Man, Goodnight Saigon, and C'est et Toi (and obscure song from Glass Houses.)

I'm not sure why, but 'All for Leyna' (from 'Glass Houses') has always been a favorite. It's a good one to sing along with.

"Glass Houses" is such a terrific album! It doesn’t get mentioned as much as "The Stranger" or "52nd St." but it's right up there, IMO.

Man, I was raised on Billy Joel. My dad’s brother bought Joel’s first album and told my dad “This guy is gonna be huge.” My uncle died in an accident a couple of months later and my dad has always had a special interest ever since.

Growing up, the Innocent Man album was a must on any family road trip — otherwise we’d have bad luck.

My parents were supposed to see him in concert last fall, but the concert was rescheduled due to rain — would have been their first time to see him.

Anyway, I love a lot of his songs, but I’m partial to the songs on Innocent Man (particularly The Longest Time and This Night). Also love Just the Way You Are, I Go to Extremes, My Life and Italian Restaurant.

It turns out that Billy Joel actually hates "We Didn't Start The Fire"

As for Peter David, that one hurts.  I didn't discover his comic work until later, but I did enjoy his Star Trek novels and his stand alone stuff (I recommend his retelling of Peter Pan, Tigerheart, if you can track it down).  And his Writing for Comics with Peter David is one of the best books about the craft of writing, period.

Well, I don't always pick 'em right. I also like R.E.M's 'Shiny, Happy People' and Tears for Fears 'The Way You Are'- all three songs their performers themselves didn't like but got stuck with performing due to popular demand.  Oh well.

Regardless, I hope Mr. Joel recovers soon!

This thread sent me down a Billy Joel-inspired rabbit hole, so I’m here to post a couple more of my faves:

I’ve Loved These Days: The soundtrack to a few end-of-the-year slideshows when I was an undergrad.  Wept unashamedly through all of them.

A Matter of Trust:  I love this song and I never see it on any list!

We can still like it. :)

and sorry @tearknee I only saw this last page of posts, so I didn’t see you say “aside from We didn’t start the fire” lol.

"Why Should I Worry" (Are we going to ignore that Billy Joel was in Oliver and Company???)

Absotively posolutely.

People have already hit the highlights on BIlly Joel so I'll throw in a few more, Pressure, Stiletto, Don't Ask Me Why. I've had this vague idea there should be a character in a novel that lives in the New York area and loves Billy Joel so much she named her daughters Leyna and Rosalinda.

SiriusXM has a randomly occuring limited-time only Billy Joel channel. They gave the Dave Matthews Band, Pitbull, and Kelly Clarkson permanent channels but Billy Joel doesn't rate one? Bull.

Never read Peter David's comics but I own Knight Life. Or I should say I have the original version, he rewrote it years later and took a light hearted novel about King Arthur returning and running for Mayor of New York City and turned it much darker and nearly humorless. Then he wrote a sequel about the Grail that was obsessed with war (Desert Storm maybe?) and was just sad and depressing and I was so disappointed I never bothered with the third one. I always wondered if something bad had happened in his life.

Billy's music is timeless.  Our now 23 year old daughter used a quote from Miami 2017 in one of her fictional writings in high school, has seen Billy Joel twice in concert and, while watching Beat Shazaam one night, my husband and I said that if she went on that show and a Billy Joel category came up, whoever was on it with her would have to just stand back and let her go because she knows and loves a lot of his deep tracks.

I somehow never heard I’ve Loved These days, so thank you!

I, too, love A Matter of Trust.

Another I discovered in more recent years is You’re My Home.
