To me it’s no different than if Simone had sprained her ankle, had to withdraw from the team round, and will be evaluated daily to see when/if it is healed enough to continue. I am so glad we are

I hope so. I just remember her last time out being all pissy that Gabby made the team and making questionable tweets including one with a monkey emoji. And it wasn't the first time her social media got her in hot water. But we can all learn and grow and I hope that's the case with her.

It really does.  I'm comforted to think that he might actually retire this year, and we might get to see some fresh new faces.  He's a brilliant gymnast - when he's on - and seems like a nice guy, but it is so, so hard to watch.  And he keeps getting endless chances.

Scores or no scores, the guy has never had a clean international meet.  He was overscored here - fourth after falling off of the pommel?  Really? But, for some reason, USA men's gymnastics never takes a chance on someone new.  Which is why we are always "on the verge" of medaling, but hardly ever medal.

NBC wouldn't do that if the men produced.  They've hyped them in the past only to see them drop from first and landing off the podium.

And Heaven forbid we should ever get to see competitive routines from other countries' athletes in a, you know, international competition!

Sam gets chance after chance because his difficulty is so high the problem is he never hits.  Finally fresh faces are stepping up and doing better than Sam.  USOTC Men's Gymnastics program has a lot of issues it sucks it is the only option for many. 

Somewhat interesting of the guys who made it only Wiskus and Mikulak train at the USOTC. Wiskus just started training there this year because Minnesota cut the Men's Gymnastic program.

I know. That was beyond immature and pathetic behavior on her part. Simply inexcusable. But it was also five years ago and like you, I am hoping she has learned in these last five years.

I agree.  But if you can stream the events, you get A to Z competitors.  The highlights on NBC are primarily for the viewers who only watch the Olympics to see us win.

Yeah, I mean, I get it. It was really, really not good and just made her look like a sore loser mean girl asshole. 

When I started watching her videos last summer, I only started because I loved Chellsie’s gymnastics videos so much I just wanted more. I fully intended to hate watch and for a while, I did watch with a great deal of critical scorn. But as it went on and on, I realized I was getting invested and while neither Mykayla nor her husband will be joining any think tanks anytime soon, I grew to appreciate how she would turn frequent training negatives into positives, or at least she tried to. I’m the opposite. I’m a very “What’s the point, it’ll all suck anyway” kind of person so I’m intrigued by someone who is just doggedly pursuing something and obviously believes in herself. It drew me in, what can I say.

I know this is petty, but I roll my eyes so hard when the men yell and scream and pump their fists in the air and jump around after finishing a routine. Especially compared to the women, who are some of the best in the world and have actually medaled on the world stage in the past years. The women just hit their routines and walk off, like "yeah, I did that, just liked I've practiced. On to the next."

I agree, especially when they have made a pretty obvious mistake during the routine.  Do they think the judges will be fooled somehow into thinking they did better than they did?  If I were a judge, I would probably downgrade their score because I’d be thinking, “If they were so proud of that, how much worse is it usually?”

I totally get everyone's frustration about Sam, but didn't really sound like there was an obvious alternative who would be strong in the events they needed (given that Sam will probably compete on the fewest events of the four). I guess that one kid Cameron maybe (and his high bar score was underwhelming), but it didn't seem all that clear cut to me, even despite Sam's past failings.

So thrilled about Yul though, especially after seeing he's from my hometown (they literally listed my exact town, which I never see--it's usually just Denver or some other suburb).

I completely agree with you. There was an opportunity but no one really took it. I do think Sam’s experience is worth something and it seems like the floating chip in his elbow bothers him the most on rings and pommel and he won’t do either of those at the Olympics. Seems they’re kind of weak on vault. Too bad they couldn’t have another spot for Donnie. 
 

So does Brody have a chance to medal in AA? I remember a couple of really strong AAs from Russia and one or two from Japan in 2019 but I didn’t see Europeans this year and no clue if the Japanese guys are still around and healthy.

If you get the Olympics Channel, they've been airing FIG competitions from all over the world for months now with nary an American in sight.

Yea, this is why I can't really warm to MyKayla. Has she addressed this at all recently? Apologized? I hope she's grown and I certainly think it's possible she has but I haven't heard anything to confirm that.

I believe they will, based on the ads I've seen this weekend.  Also, nbcoympics.com

IIRC she did apologize back then but it was more like, "I'm sorry if anyone was offended!"

But, it's been five years and people can change.

As for the streaming, NBC has said they'll be streaming everything live, but most likely you'll need a cable login to watch beyond a certain time limit. They'll probably also package everything for their traditional primetime production.

Of course the one thing I really want to watch is part of the expensive package. 🤬 I wish there was an Olympics feed somehow, where you could just pick whatever event you wanted to watch, regardless of whether your "home" country was competing, and watch it live. I wouldn't even need commentators, just a live camera feed from the arena. I want to see every athlete compete, not just the American ones and not just Simone Biles.

Ugh this means I'll have to get premium too. I actually love Olympics basketball. In addition to Team USA team Canada has some NBA stars, Slovenia has Luka Doncic plus some Euroleague stars, Greece will have the Antemtokoumpo brothers.

I feel differently. I like seeing emotion in competitions. I don’t want to see robots who barely acknowledge a great routine. These athletes train their asses off for these moments and have every right to celebrate a great routine or a stuck landing and I think they should. Even the men, even if they don’t medal as often as the women do. For example, I loved Chellsie’s excited fist pumps at the end of her routines the first day of Nationals and I don’t think Chellsie should be given a pass to emote just because of her backstory.

Regarding celebrating after a routine that involved a fall or a big error, I imagine it’s very easy to fall or make a big mistake and let it completely ruin the rest of your routine. I remember reading in Kerri Strug’s book that she fell off the beam at a big meet, remounted and couldn’t even remember the rest of her routine. If a gymnast is able to fall/err and shake it off enough so that the remainder of the routine looks great, they should be proud of themselves and let out a happy yelp if they feel so inclined. 
 

Also, stoicism during routines leads to stoicism during results, which I find to be unbelievably weird and off putting. I remember watching a figure skating Worlds competition years ago. A skater finished her final program and was chilling in a back room, on her phone, while other skaters skated. The final skater skated, was scored and an official came to the back room to let the texting skater know she won. She barely cracked a smile and I’m sitting on my couch like “you won WORLDS for crying out loud! Maybe it hasn’t sunk in yet!?” And I know you’re not calling for stoicism but it’s the first word I thought of.

Twitterverse said Simone said she was in "so much pain." She does look really afraid to land on her right ankle. I wonder if she hurt it. Ankle injuries are so stubborn.

ETA: GET THAT CAMERA OFF SIMONE. CAN'T YOU SEE SHE'S HAVING A REALLY BAD DAY? LEAVE HER ALONE.
