Rainyhawk February 1, 2022 Share February 1, 2022 I thought Tara was absolutely right today on calling out the Republican Party and explaining what this next election will be about…democracy or authoritarianism. And that the Dems need to take this more seriously and be clear in what we are fighting for. They need to take the gloves off for once. I really liked her today. Perhaps Whoopi simply isn't fighting it the way McCain probably did when she was in trouble. Whoopi seemed to recognize she was in the wrong here. Egomaniac and mistaken though she often is, she wasn't attempting to demonize Jewish people at all despite her mistake, in fact she was defending them by arguing against Maus being banned. 2 hours ago, Axie said: I have to wonder how the other hosts are taking the news. I think she felt that was a cop-out on the school's part, and she felt that the nudity reason/excuse was a poor rationalization for banning a book that the school just didn't want to be available to students. I'm forgiving when the wrong thing is said out of ignorance. I don't think Whoopi is a bigot at all. However, I understand she has a huge platform. That said, it's THE VIEW. It was supposed to be a women's talk show to discuss various issues candidly. It wasn't meant to be hard news or political. It got more serious throughout the years, but let's be honest, sometimes it turns into the Real Housewives. Moments like this don't bother me if we get the learning moments out of them. Maybe there were others watching at home who had views like Whoopi and now understand why what she said was wrong. Part of what makes The View fun is the outspoken women. If you cancel people for putting their foot in their mouth, we're going to lose that. Everyone will be scared to be candid. We had a certain blonde who'd be nasty to her fellow hosts, rude to guests and even the audience before she was finally gone. I guess I can maybe understand a temporary suspension (consequence culture), but I hope she doesn't get fired over this (cancel culture). All that said, I'm not Jewish. I like to listen to what the community the controversy is about have to say to really understand the appropriate action. 9 Link to comment

That's a story that's going to dominate the headlines tomorrow and ABC isn't going to want any comparisons made between what that guy did and what Whoopi said, so they probably figured it would be best to suspend her. Although I know and agree Nazism is a racist ideology, I do not, in my day-to-day conversation, call anti-Jewish bigotry and hatred "racism"; I call it antiSemitism. That doesn't minimize it in comparison. It's just a more specific term. While race is a social construct, I'm not in the habit of using Nazi definitions as my own. I wouldn't call American WASPS' oppression and marginalization of Irish, Italian, and Polish immigrants "racism," I'd call it bigotry, because it's not racism, and it is bigotry. I think Whoopi was dead wrong in what she said Monday, but due to a lack of understanding and education, not hatred. Unless she was horrible behind the scenes, in some way we haven't heard about, suspending her for two weeks — after she offered a full-throated apology, and listened to, accepted, and affirmed the correction that ADL's CEO Jonathan Greenblatt graciously offered — the suspension seems excessive. 15 Link to comment
