Joy and Sara are both married to ethnically Jewish men...not saying that makes them the authority on the subject but hey Whoopi maybe realize there's a lot of diverse backgrounds the panel you can get insight from too.

Don't forget Sunny is of Sephardic Jewish descent via her Puerto Rican mother.  Puerto Rico had a lot of Jewish people from Spain during the Spanish colonial era.

I don't know why I was so surprised about what Whoopi said.  I just remembered how she railed at Rosie how she couldn't understand racism as the white lesbian mother of a black child.

When I watched the clip of her on Monday's  show, it reminded me why i dislike Whoopi.  She speaks on subjects and will let no one correct her or express to her why what she is saying makes no sense. She acts like the authority on everything.

My bolding...because I agree...AND Disney and ABC not only let her get away with all of her "insight," but they fawn over her and reward her.  It's LONG PAST TIME for her to go.  Think this might be a first step?

Quoted from The Book of Whoopi:   THAT'S NOT GOOD ENOUGH!

Whoopi’s a fool. Her comments are especially confounding as she herself has previously claimed to be Jewish.

Interesting.   A Jewish woman (really?) who doesn't understand what the Holocaust was all about.

tbh dont blame Whoopi for the ignorance just hope she is more humble in the future.

COMEDY LINE OF THE DAY!   I don't think most people would use "Whoopi" and "humble" in the same sentence.  That's her problem.  She's continues to present herself as the all-knowing Wise Whoopi.  She gets angry and cuts off anyone who tries (gently) to make a correction.   Although...although, regarding the word "humble," I have read "humble-brag" quite often referring to her.

Her point about man's inhumanity to man is not wrong itself, but it isn't the whole point.

I think she presented that AS her "whole point," on Colbert--because she's always right, no matter what she says or how "everyone" misunderstands it.

I'm never surprised by Whoopi's ignorance.  My blood still boils thinking of how she tried to educate her cohosts and the audience that The Polanski case wasn't actually "rape-rape".

I thought Tara was absolutely right today on calling out the Republican Party and explaining what this next election will be about…democracy or authoritarianism.  And that the Dems need to take this more seriously and be clear in what we are fighting for.  They need to take the gloves off for once.  I really liked her today.  Since this is her second time, maybe she’s the front runner?  Wonder if she and princess are still friends…I don’t think they agree on this.

I watch the show via youtube clips so I might have missed it but did they mention that today is Lunar New Year?

And I agree with Tara.  Pregnancy announcements (along with gender reveals, proposals, engagement announcements, first day of school pics, etc) have all gotten out of control (and don't even get me started on "prom-posals").  Keep it simple, people.

I'm always happy for my friends, but when I hear comments about our culture not celebrating marriage or parenthood and only applauding careers, I roll my eyes. Us single people are constantly celebrating you!

My son and his wife are expecting their first baby together.   She was dead set on having a gender reveal party last month despite the pandemic.  She only relented in canceling it when the venue suggested they do so.  They immediately did a FB live for the reveal.  So that is how I found out I'm going to be the grandmother of a baby girl who's name will be Caylee Rose.  Whatever happened to just telling your friends and family?

I remembered this myself and was shocked she didn't bring this up during the interview in the first segment.

Joy was hilarious during the pregnancy and casket discussions. Corpse viagra, lol.

Whoopi is a big old bully and makes the show unwatchable on most days for me. They won't ever have a great panel until each panelist is empowered to challenge every other panelist without the fear of Whoopi's wrath. I am tired of them deferring to her. If any other panel member had said that they would have been castigated immediately and told how harmful that was.

Although an outstanding apology today it was not enough, evidently.

Read an article where Whoopi thought the nudity was in "To Kill a Mockingbird" rather than the Muse book. I can't access that currently, can anyone confirm that? I think it was Sunny that pointed out the nude woman being killed was an old woman at the concentration camp, iirc.

She does need a time out, imo.

I thought her confusion about the nudity was due to the characters in Maus being mice, or maybe i'm projecting since I was confused about how naked mice can be offensive

I'm surprised they suspended her after having the expert on today. Wouldn't it have been more logical, if they were going to suspend her, to suspend first and then have the expert there with her the day she returned?

They probably hoped the expert would be enough but the pressure to do something more was greater.

Am I the only one who thinks suspension is an overreaction? Anyone who has watched The View for Whoopi's 13 years has seen how poorly educated she is. This has been showcased with the plethora of ignorant comments she made over the years. Her comments seemed poorly worded (and ignorant!) but not maliciously hateful. I believe that this matters. It seems she was attempting to make a broader point about human kind and failed miserably.

How long did she get suspended for defending Cosby and saying that Polanski did not rape-rape that 13 year old girl?

2 weeks is an underreaction in my opinion. Blaming the audience for misunderstanding her "broader point" was just an excuse. She doubled down on Sara and one of the others insisting that they were wrong and the Holocaust was not about race. The Holocaust was not just White on White (as she said on the View or Colbert). After the expert spoke, she still thinks race is colour and said she can "see" what race people are. Obviously not.

Whoopi’s being suspended for two weeks? Yep, I think that’s about right.

https://www.cnn.com/2022/02/01/media/whoopi-goldberg-the-view-suspended/index.html

Does this mean that we get two full weeks of Joy as moderator and Ana sitting in?

I do think that this is serious, and she may not return.  I also don't remember the former co-host we don't speak of getting that long of a suspension for some of the things she said, or the way she behaved toward her other co-hosts (or actually, any kind of publicized suspension that was confirmed by the network, at all).

I have to wonder how the other hosts are taking the news.  I imagine Whoopie is furious, Sara is crying, Sunny is feeling superior. Joy and Ana?  I don’t know.  Don’t think Joy cares.

I honestly think it's a case of "too little, too late" - according to the article linked upthread, it seemed like a lot of people from ABC News were not satisfied with her apology.

And, compare, I think McCain was only suspended twice in her four years of heinousness (one was after threatening violence when they were talking about teen survivors from Parkland, Florida), and only ever for a week at most each time--and they never made her apologize on air and never openly called them suspensions. Perhaps Whoopi simply isn't fighting it the way McCain probably did when she was in trouble. Whoopi seemed to recognize she was in the wrong here. Egomaniac and mistaken though she often is, she wasn't attempting to demonize Jewish people at all despite her mistake, in fact she was defending them by arguing against Maus being banned.

I believe that Joy and Whoopi are real friends. I doubt Joy's happy to see her going through it right now since they've all been put through the ringer before over slip-ups.

2015 was a much different time tbf in terms of how things played out after controversy. I mean the show made Rosie Perez apologize to Kelly Osbourne fgs.

I have a feeling Whoopi didn't like having to apologize on air and made a big fuss behind the scenes which caused the suspension.

Nonetheless she will either reflect or make herself out to be a martyr who knows. just hope Joy shines as moderator.

I don’t know about that. I see the suspension being a thing that ABC did it to save corporate face. Whoopi did the apology which I personally took as sincere. We aren’t talking about something like a political stance and having to “apologise for it” I genuinely believe Whoopi poorly communicated what she was trying to say and didn’t have malicious intent behind it.

Humans aren’t perfect at the end of the day we all learn and grow each day. But I can’t see her “acting up” behind the scenes about this.

On Joy being moderator full time, she doesn’t want it so I can’t see that happening.

I’d be getting Lisa Ling back ASAP to be part of the panel.

Wow. If it happens it would be similar to Sharon getting fired from The Talk. The "big name" getting fired for their commentary on race.

I cannot stand Whoopi and, I too, think it's overreaction. It smells of cancel culture. Or as Sunny would say, consequence culture.

The cohosts were having a lot of fun with Charlie Day. Except Whoopi. She didn't say a word, very somber.

That was so ridiculous, too! I think they were considering hiring Kelly Osbourne and that's why they made Perez apologize, but Osbourne still received a great deal of blowback. I'll be forever grateful to Perez for putting the nail in that coffin.

I think that Whoopi's confusion was that the nudity was given as the reason for the book being banned, when there were so many other atrocities in the book.  I think she felt that was a cop-out on the school's part, and she felt that the nudity reason/excuse was a poor rationalization for banning a book that the school just didn't want to be available to students.

At least, that was the way I understood it.

I hate to see her go out like this, if indeed she is going to be fired. She meant no ill will or intent. Whoopi probably has the equivalent of a grade school education. Doesn't mean she's not intelligent. But she is under-educated. And her dyslexia was probably not diagnosed and recognized quickly back then.

while I think true and if she were just a normal regular celeb commenting this wouldn't be an issue. But she is the moderator of an ABC News show in 3 million Americans homes every day. not sure I support this suspension but Whoopi has been always been an incident like this away from leaving. plus if producers were annoyed with her she could very easily just be doing what NBC did to Megyn Kelly.

Let's keep in mind top people at ABC are not the same the last few years.

So Polanski, Cosby, and these comments by Whoopi are not acceptable. Eventually one needs to wonder what she 'really" thinks.

White on white racism? Did we not see that with Italians and Polish and Irish etc? She forgets about that, if she knew.

And ignorance is not an excuse to allow the ignorance.

I think the suspension might be an overreaction, because I don't think Whoopi intended to hurt, offend, or discount anyone, and she wasn't denying that the Holocaust happened, or minimizing the evil it wrought. She didn't have a clear understanding of how the Nazis defined race. That's ignorance (in the "lack of understanding" sense), not hatred.

For all the shitty things that have been said on The View (by Whoopi, by other hosts, and by guests), this seemed to have less ill intent than most.

Agree. I'm forgiving when the wrong thing is said out of ignorance. I don't think Whoopi is a bigot at all. However, I understand she has a huge platform. That said, it's THE VIEW. It was supposed to be a women's talk show to discuss various issues candidly. It wasn't meant to be hard news or political. It got more serious throughout the years, but let's be honest, sometimes it turns into the Real Housewives. Moments like this don't bother me if we get the learning moments out of them. Maybe there were others watching at home who had views like Whoopi and now understand why what she said was wrong. Part of what makes The View fun is the outspoken women. If you cancel people for putting their foot in their mouth, we're going to lose that. Everyone will be scared to be candid.

We had a certain blonde who'd be nasty to her fellow hosts, rude to guests and even the audience before she was finally gone. I guess I can maybe understand a temporary suspension (consequence culture), but I  hope she doesn't get fired over this (cancel culture).

All that said, I'm not Jewish. I like to listen to what the community the controversy is about have to say to really understand the appropriate action.

I don't think they're wrong for suspending her although I think they should have been consistent with how they treated the last co-host in terms of length. There are so many things Whoopi's done that, if she'd been fired over them, I'd have said--good. The way she treated O'Donnell, Perez, Faris, getting them fired or running them off, and the way she's treated Sunny in the past, too. But if she got fired over this, I'd end up feeling sorry for her. Very conflicting emotions here.

I'm guessing that they weren't planning on suspending her until the new story that broke tonight about the black man who was a former UCLA lecturer who sent out an 800 page manifesto calling for the killing of white people and Jewish people (and apparently he had stuff about Asians and women in there as well) and threatening violence overall.  That's a story that's going to dominate the headlines tomorrow and ABC isn't going to want any comparisons made between what that guy did and what Whoopi said, so they probably figured it would be best to suspend her.  Because I agree that it makes no sense to have her apologize and have an expert on just to suspend her.

Not all bigotry, ethnic, or religious prejudice is racism.

Although I know and agree Nazism is a racist ideology, I do not, in my day-to-day conversation, call anti-Jewish bigotry and hatred "racism"; I call it antiSemitism.

That doesn't minimize it in comparison. It's just a more specific term. While race is a social construct, I'm not in the habit of using Nazi definitions as my own.

I wouldn't call American WASPS' oppression and marginalization of Irish, Italian, and Polish immigrants "racism," I'd call it bigotry, because it's not racism, and it is bigotry.

I think Whoopi was dead wrong in what she said Monday, but due to a lack of understanding and education, not hatred. Unless she was horrible behind the scenes, in some way we haven't heard about, suspending her for two weeks — after she offered a full-throated apology, and listened to, accepted, and affirmed the correction that ADL's CEO Jonathan Greenblatt graciously offered — the suspension seems excessive.
