Jeopardy! Season 37 (2020-2021)

Thumbs down to ABC and George Staphanopolus for interrupting one of Alex Trebek's last Jeopardy! episodes in order to tell me something they already told me half an hour ago. I'm not sure what I'm going to do when the new hosts start on Jeopardy! but I do know for sure if Staphanopolus gets the hosting gig I will become a former Jeopardy! watcher. A pox on him and ABC and whoever thought that was a good idea. Fill in your own curse words here and rest assured I've spoken them just now.

I guess I'm finally getting used to the swapped start times from 5 years ago. Watched Jeopardy at 7 on WABC for a decade before moving to FL where WoF is on first and then Jeopardy at 7:30. Missed most of tonight's show after the first few clues and it didn't pick up again until there were only about 5 clues left. Out of curiosity, was Iago an answer in the Shakespeare category? It may be a while until I get around to watching the whole episode.

The date plus Joan Sutherland being an opera singer got me to FJ.

Great game!  Orphan was the only TS that surprised me, because of the several hints between the clue and category.

I'm giving myself a genuine "good for me" for running* the first round, because I was in the adjacent room playing with my cat; I read faster than Alex speaks, so I normally have a little extra time to think and answer than I did tonight.

*I'm giving myself credit for podcast, because if I'd seen the clue, I'd have known it.  (The other clues with pictures I could get just based on the verbiage, but that one I needed to see the icon.)

DJ I watched, yet performed far worse - stupid angels and invented languages categories, plus I missed one each in most other categories (two of the movies, but I did get the TS of The Hustler).

I didn't get FJ; I was working my way around the world thinking of famous modern performance venues with distinctive styles, and never settled on one for my guess - I hadn't made it down to Australia yet when time ran out, but if I had it still wouldn't have been an A-ha, that's it! moment because I was relying on the date since I had no idea what type of artist Joan Sutherland is/was.  It probably would have been my guess, though.

Although I was hoping Kate would win again (nice comeback!), I'd have been happy with any of the contestants winning... they were all good!

I was on fire tonight. I'd have made Alex proud. LOL

I even knew FJ thanks to one conversation with one of my kids, discussing our fav opera houses. Mine is my current home town... it's quaint and known to many as the best in Muskoka (Ontario, Canada). We don't have HUGE names perform here as the main theatre isn't huge - rather, it's intimate. We do have (well, used to have, pre-Covid) wonderful performances. The big names all perform at our casino concert hall; it doesn't have the same charm.

I was tickled by FJ!  Over the past week or so I've been on a "great sopranos" bender on YouTube.  I thought Sutherland was English and was surprised to learn that she was Australian.  So what is a famous complex with a theatre named after this Australian opera singer likely to be?  I'm not sure I would've gotten it a week ago.  I always like feeling rewarded for learning something so soon.  The friends I've been sending clips to all week think it would be interesting to put together a list of "pavlovs" from that world.  Australian soprano is probably Sutherland, Greek is probably Callas, etc.  I'm going to be putting together a blue ribbon panel and get back to you all real soon. 😉

Good strong game throughout.  A little disappointed that the streak of board-clearing has ended, but if that's the worst thing that happened to me on a Monday, it was a good one, I'd say.

Eh, I thought Joan Sutherland was an actress. I was thinking the building had something to do with an actress, a singer and an architect that I'd never heard of. Couldn't get my head out of southern California.

FJ was an instaget just based on the year. I was very young in '73, but had a teacher who was obsessed with the Sydney Opera House. She was so excited when it opened and was always showing us photos of it, photos of it under construction, etc. It made quite an impression on me and ever since, the SOH and the year are forever linked. When the clue began "Opened in 1973..." I immediately thought, Sydney Opera House!

I got "opera" because I vaguely remember Joan Sutherland was an opera singer - though I was stuck in NY before finally heading down under in time. My husband focused on the architect and got it sooner - because it's a stunning architectural achievement. The date didn't mean too much to either of us.

I got it the same way - I'm a writer but one I learned grammar (up through college), I let go of the details.

I ran the World Capital Bingo - beating my husband. Quite a reversal of roles because I suck at anything geographic (unless I've been there) and he's an ace.

I missed the first Shakespeare clue because I'd forgotten the category (I said Othello - thinking we were supposed to identify who the speaker was talking about), but got the rest. Near sweep. Characters I can identify, the names of plays (in particular the comedies) not so much.

I hated the Barbie category. It just seems weird to me to memorialize important real life women as a Barbie doll. To me it trivializes them. I understand the rationale, I just don't agree with it. Nevertheless, I got them all except Ella, because the doll and the picture didn't really look much like her to me.

Still, I enjoyed the game, even as the countdown gets smaller.

I know a Barbie collector, and they are fierce. Collector's Call did an ep on Barbies a while back, this person's collection was valued at nearly one-half million. Just a pair of tiny Barbie high heels is hundreds of dollars. Not that it has anything to do with Mattel creating famous Barbie people. I found it ... creepy? ... that all the famous-people dolls had the same face and body, just different coloring and hair. I wonder if the proceeds from those dolls went to good causes.

Only ran one category tonight (My "Shot"), got 4 each in What are the Odds, Book Barriers (got the DD in that one), and Whisker Rebellion. Did terribly with anagrams and nations. FJ was an instaget. I worked in a bookstore when that magazine started and we used to snark on the fact that she was on every cover.

Other than missing "What is plastic?" Brayden seems to me to be unstoppable, rather than a one-time wonder——but that might just be because I could never memorize historical names, dates, and places longer than the day of the test requiring them.

I found the answer of Disneyland in the Whiskers category interesting due to the convo here about Disney not hiring fellows with facial hair. Just proves that our side discussions are learning events. Never know when you're gonna need those tidbits of info shared here.

Finally, another FJ category up my alley since magazines are my profession. I knew the answer instantly although I swear she had someone else on the cover once, or maybe someone with her on the cover. But yeay for me, still at the Table For One! At least so far anyway.

FJ was an instaget, but otherwise I just had a so-so game.  The only TS I got were Mongol and mandolin.  I loved the anagram category, though.

Just looked at the archive and the only TS I got were King David and Mandolin. (And I was sure I was wrong about David because it came to me immediately and I felt like it was too easy a name to come up with for a $2000 clue, but it's all I had.)

Anybody notice how Brayden (sp?) - the new winner (wow! he's good!) - seemed to have a DD magnet implant? He buzzed in, answered correctly, and his first pick was the DD... similarly, in the DJ round, he did it again... then immediately picked the 2nd DD... AND he got all 3 correct!

Another phenom game. I'm happy Alex had some great games... I hope it took his mind off his pain a bit, if only temporarily. I miss him already. But then, I get sad when my kids/grands come to visit because I know they're going to leave for home eventually. Sad, but true. My name is Bliss and I'm a suckaholic. My flip side is more fun... that's where the fairies live, I'm told.

I was pretty slow today.  Many answers I just know I would've gotten if I'd paused and thought about them for 10 or 15 seconds longer.  Ah well.  Did Margaret remind anyone else of Hilary Swank?  "Onward," the Pixar movie, made me think back to my usual Tuesday lunchtime pursuit in the "before times," checking just-released movie listings for the following Friday-Thursday.  There was always more than I could possibly see, given that I have a few other interests and also occasionally like to see friends in a fully-lit area where we're allowed to speak to each other.  The last Tuesday before all this, I remember thinking that I like Pixar but had better options, so maybe I'd see it the following week.  There I was on Friday, on the streetcar home from another movie, when I read our city health officer's order minutes after it came out.  And now here we are, nine months later, and hardly any the better, it seems!  Ennui, party of two, for 853 and Bliss?

RE "Disneyland," I said "Disney World," and think that would have been accepted, as I recall the policy changed at both resorts at the same time.  RE "O," I wondered at the time whether "om" was the shortest ever correct FJ response, and thought they might have topped it tonight.  I think I read there have been a few single-character answers over the years, and the magazine is officially "O, the Oprah Magazine" anyway.  I did know it right away, may Breonna rest in peace.

I remember that convo. 🙂 But that's not why I got it - I got it from personal experience (well, not quite personal, my whiskers aren't quite that bad yet).

I was sure I was wrong about David for the same reason, and sadly did not answer.

Though the clue was about Disneyland, Disney itself also had a no facial hair policy in the 70's - my ex, an electrical engineer, couldn't work there because he had a large 70's mustache (couldn't grow a beard though - weird).

Mr Chemo had a laugh at me. As they began the Marco Polo category I told him that the first answer was going to be Venice and of course it was. I got Mongol Empire and David. It took me a sec, but I got “O” for FJ.

I wasn't really rooting for or against anyone last night but once Brayden got Bartleby, I was firmly in his camp.  After an early American lit class piled heavy with  Melville (Omoo, Typee, Moby Dick), Bartleby was the only part I could truly say I enjoyed- whenever I say or think I prefer not to, I chalk one up to him.

Jeopardy was prefaced with a weather update (snowstorm here today...4 inches so far in my town), which started with "You won't miss a second of Jeopardy." Lee Goldberg knows what's important.

Didn't run a single category, but in DJ I still managed to do significantly better than yesterday (70% vs 54%) (not so much in the first round). But I got at least three right in all but one category, all three Daily Doubles, and Final. 

TS I got: Snake River (surprised myself with that one because it was a total guess) and Begorra.

I got the entire categories of OO and caves right and the entire category of minced oaths wrong.

BTW, when med terms came up, I was thinking that "algia" is a suffix for pain. Is nostalgia supposed to be painful?  I know nothing to do with anything.
