PrincessPurrsALot March 31, 2020 Share March 31, 2020 Quote At 24 years old and over 600 lbs., Megan lives at home with her mom, who cooks for her since Megan can't do much on her own. Now Megan must travel to Houston to meet Dr. Now and change her eating habits or her life may end before it begins. Mom is shoveling mass quantities of food and Megan is taking it all in. What will the reason be for this dysfunction? This is the LIVE CHAT thread. It will be open during the US East Coast and US West Coast showings. Original air date 2020.04.01 Link to comment
Minivanessa April 2, 2020 Share April 2, 2020 So, I muted the show at the top of the second hour to join a zoom meeting on a fun subject. I checked in on live chat a few times and looked up at the TV a few times. Am I correct that she didn't ever get the surgery? For a medical reason? She did manage to lose some weight over the 12 (?) months, though, didn't she? I hope someone will fill me in because TBH the first hour of this episode was deadly dull, and I'm unlikely to watch the second hour - unless I get severely squirrelly as this month of staying at home goes by. Thanks! 4 Link to comment

Thanks! No surgery, they did some tests and she has gallbladder issues, he said something about a blocked bile duct, he was talking about scheduling an endoscopy(?) to see exactly what was going on. That was at about 9:54. She did lose some weight but I don't remember how much total. Also her medication count went from 8 at the beginning to 12 toward the end. I want to say something positive. She has a very cute doggie. That's all I got. Edited April 2, 2020 by ams1001 1 9 Link to comment

DC Gal in VA April 2, 2020 Share April 2, 2020 I'm re-watching this now after, thank God, primarily watching The Masked Singer and missing most of the original airing. I'm at her first weigh-in after being "allegedly" on the diet and "working hard." He gave her an 80 pound weight loss goal and she only lost 14. So weird that she saw that as okay and her mom said she did good. Although she was polite to Dr. Now and not a verbally abusive asshole like so many poundticipants, she was so absolutely frustrating to watch, mouthing the right words but never seeming to grasp how dire her physical condition was for someone so young--12 medications a day, high blood pressure, blood clots. Did they ever mention what other medical issues she had? Seeing her also reminded me why the mortality rate of the M600PL subjects is so low: modern medicine. Those like James K, Schenee, Steven Assanti (who was also a pill popping druggie) and so many others are still alive. If this was 60, 70, 80 years ago most if not all of these folks would be dead, probably well before they reached 600 pounds. Hahaha, took so long to write this while trying to watch this episode AND switching over to CNN's COVID-19 coverage that I just saw her second weigh-in and she only lost 32 pounds in FOUR MONTHS! Sigh. I wish her well but I'm not very hopeful. 6 Link to comment

Thanks! Hi @Jeeves. I re-watched this episode since I missed most of it the first time around. Her starting weight was 604 pounds and she ended up losing 124 pounds over a 12 month period, ending up at 492 pounds. She did not get the surgery because, after running some tests, Dr. Now surmised that she was still too unhealthy to have it. She had gall bladder issues and there was also discussion about some problem with one of her lungs; not sure what exactly that was since Dr. Now went all mumbly as he has done recently and it wasn't clear to me what that was all about. Interesting that Dr. Now told her that he was proud of her and gave her a goal of losing just 30 pounds in two munts; she lost 29. He of course scolded her for not ever even coming near her monthly goals except the last one but was rather gentle, even fatherly with her when doing so. I really do believe that he wants the best for his patients and is deeply affected when they fail, or worse, die. He wanted to monitor her health for the next four to six months and told her that she must keep losing weight to stay on track for weight loss surgery. When she left his office she muttered something about being disappointed and that all her "hard work" had been for nothing, that she hoped to get the surgery so that she could be done with having to control what she ate (paraphrasing). I just shook my head at that one since she will have to control the way she eats post surgery for the rest of her life. In other words, she was looking at WLS as the magic bullet. Hope this helps. 2 2 Link to comment

fonfereksglen April 2, 2020 Share April 2, 2020 Megan's significant blood clotting issue along with her other medical problems may prevent WLS. I was surprised Dr. Now or his staff didn't immediately address the gall bladder and bile duct issues. With stones, infection is always a possibility. Emergency surgery for someone using blood thinners is a horror show! On a lighter note, the visit with dad was surreal. Hopefully he got the wings he was craving. 6 Link to comment
calpurnia99 April 2, 2020 Share April 2, 2020 They needed a nutritionist from the beginning. But the mom was one of the worst saboteurs we've ever seen and that's saying something. She was co-dependent and wanted to feel like the skinny one and be able to overeat and blame her daughter. They really didn't know that a 5 pound slab of bacon doesn't go on a salad with shredded cheese and a half bottle of creamy dressing? I think the mom did know that was not on the diet but want to sabotage Megan. When Dr. Now asked her about what her eating habit was, she said "I eat a lot of chef salads" and he should have pressed her on the ingredients of that. Also when she mentioned she eats a lot of cheese, he didn't press her on that. I don't think those bagged shredded Mexican cheese foods are allowed, at least not in the potions she was using. Then when she was trying to eat squash and the mom says "you are not gonna put brown sugar and butter on that?" oh fuck off you sabotaging bitch. So good on Megan making steady progress even while finding hidden bags of candy while cleaning. Her body shape with all the fat in the front actually kept her mobile plus her youth. It was obvious she thought the surgery would stop her desire for food completely. At one point she said that. Near the end she said "Only 18 more pounds then I can be done with this watching what I eat". At the beginning I thought I would hate her, but she was polite and listened to Dr. Now. She seemed to have a good attitude. Maybe I set the bar low but she became likable to me. Her back story was not anything that would force you to get how she did. It's like she was born wanting to eat a lot. Mean siblings? We've heard a lot worse. She was 300 pounds at age 11 when the divorce happened, so that had nothing to do with it. Her health problems are really awful. As much as the mother goes on and on about how she doesn't want her daughter to die, she is a selfish piece of shit and if Megan dies it's her fault. 1 8 Link to comment

Well, maybe we could do a memory exchange as I saw the last half but missed the first because of my eating habit. I started to watch the first half and couldn't make it past the 3 minute mark before deciding I needed my beauty sleep. The only thing I really wondered was where they were from---I am sure it was at the bottom of the screen at the beginning but I was multi-tasking and just listening. As to the mother's being a pharmacy assistant-----I bet you one bacon topped salad that the mom only worked as a cashier in the pharmacy dept. She would be handing customers their bags of Rxs so that makes her an "assistant." Megan herself seemed to hear what she wanted to hear, like a lot of these folks (ie, her obsession with her sodium intake). At least we didn't have to see her in the shower; also, she didn't have tattoos, piercings, heavy makeup or weird hair. I just saw bits and pieces of the show with Joe, and it is interesting to compare and contrast. His epi was only an hour. He got bypass instead of the sleeve. Also his mother was obese, but there seemed to be no talk about her needing to get on the program as well. Also the narration was better written. I think maybe this season Dr Now is really trying to get the family members to see how they help or hinder his patients. Joe's mother seemed pretty passive instead of the passive-aggressive mother that Megan seems to have when it comes to meals. Also a dietician came to Joe's apartment and showed him how to read labels. I am really trying to pay attention to our eating habit while we stay home. I am not used to eating 3 meals a day at home. I will probably end up on this show at the end of the shelter in place period because I have a compelling urge to bake cookies. 1 1 Link to comment

calpurnia99 April 2, 2020 Share April 2, 2020 This is the first time too that we have seen a pounder buy a scale and use it to weigh themselves. I think the reason is the scales that weigh to 1000 pounds are super expensive. I think this family had more money than the usual pounder family. The outside of their Texas apartment didn't look like a prison. I guess I'll google how much they cost but I am thinking over $200. ETA: I found it! $395! but a livestock scale that goes up to 700 pounds is $300. The 1000 scale on amazon is "sold out". I guess lots of people need them. This mom thought it was worth spending $400 on this scale but then kept offering to fry up slabs of bacon and pushing for butter and brown sugar on veggies! 1 2 1 Link to comment

Of course, after that she threw a pound of bacon, shredded cheese, and a bottle of dressing on her salad. Megan's earlier issues are she had a ton of DVT blood clots in her legs, that went to her lungs, and severely damaged one lung, She eventually was on 12 medications for high blood pressure, blood thinners, and other issues she had, and she's only 24. I loathed the mother. Sitting there with her mouth gaping open, starring at Dr. Now like he was her dream man. I notice that was when he told her she needed to lose a lot too. If mother or daughter think the Now family will ever be interested in them, they're even more delusional than they are about demon sodium. I can say that Megan, and her mother kept a clean house, but that's all. I see zero chance that Mom will ever lose weight, or that Megan will maintain any kind of weight loss. Playing devil's advocate. There are people who LOVE going to the doctor, and who LOVE getting new prescriptions. Because they "doctor shop" - and doctors are busy - they can go to a new doctor and fill out their medical history with whatever they want. SOMETIMES a new doctor will check with other doctors, but not always. And then patients can be assigned to an assistant or nurse practitioner for ongoing checkups, etc. My brother self-diagnosed himself with fibromyalgia ("Mom had it, so I'm sure I do too"). His last doctor just wrote that down on his records, with no tests or even a referral to a specialist. Then he shifted him to an assistant (not even an MD) for monitoring and refills. Bro saw commercials on TV for Cymbalta for fibromyalgia and asked the medical assistant for a prescription. He immediately began having severe reactions (including seizures), but had I not gone with him to see the assistant (and eventually to see the doctor), no one would have realized that the Cymbalta was causing a DECLINE in his health, not an improvement. The assistant did help him to get off Cymbalta, but the seizures continued until we found him dead on his bathroom floor. And some doctors just love prescribing meds. I stopped seeing a doctor who had me on 8 prescriptions in my 40s. When I'd complain about side effects, he tried to give me another prescription to address the side effects. I told him that I needed to stop taking statins for (borderline) cholesterol and he said, "Well, if you want to have a stroke and spend the rest of your life in a wheelchair, drooling out one side of your mouth, I guess that's your choice. I am currently on only over-the-counter medications at 73. My cholesterol numbers were brought down slightly (enough to make my new doctor happy) with Niacin. She knows I'm not going to take statins. I feel fine, and I don't have to deal with side effects (other than Benadryl makes me sleepy). Sorry if this is TMI . . . but doctors need to recommend options other than prescription drugs to help patients. Why wasn't her primary doctor working with her about her weight? Mine monitors mine closely. 10 Link to comment

It's like they think it's only unhealthy if it's got sugar or sodium. Also, you have a sweet tooth? Eat some fruit! Healthier and sweet! A friend’s 90 year old mother had several low level complaints, mostly about being tired and achy. The doctor told her that it was part of the package of being 90 and that she didn’t require anything. Her daughter was furious and took her mother to several other doctors and had her mother on 8 prescriptions. She was dead within a year. There are people who don’t feel the doctor cares unless they get blood work and a prescription. These people help make doctors rich and Medicare broke. Link to comment

She came out of the womb stuffing her face. 1 3 Link to comment
