Picard dreams of Data -- I can see why Picard doesn't want to wake up.

We finally get the backstory of why Picard had his falling out with Starfleet -- he tried a Dunkirk-like evacuation of the Romulan Empire because of the supernova, and Starfleet decided to abandon the idea after it was begun likely leaving millions of Romulans to die.
No mention of Ambassador Spock though.

Interestingly, Picard has a Romulan couple as his vinyard estate staff.

Mars is on fire and the Utopia Planitia shipyards were destroyed thanks to the attack by rogue synthetics that were created at the Daystrom Institute. And because of the rogue synth attack, all synthetic development has been all but halted in the Federation.

Dahj is Data's daughter -- I wonder who her adapted parents were -- and she was being hunted by Romulans who eventually killed her.  But her twin is working on a former Borg cube as part of a Romulan Reclamation site.

I'm in.  Can't wait for more.

I got the impression that Picard was supposed to lead an officially sanctioned Romulan rescue until the Mars attack happened, destroyed a lot of the ships, and Starfleet retreated to link their wounds. So then Picard resigned and organized a Dunkirk-like rescue as a civilian. 

They didn't state that outright, but it fits, especially with what the Romulan couple told him before his interview: "We'll never forget what you did for us."

I suppose they'll elaborate more on what exactly happened later on this season, either through exposition or flash back.

 

I'm in.  Can't wait for more.

I don't think I finished issue 2, so I agree that it's bad.

Is this the first instance of uniform styles going backwards? They're a variation on the early DS9/Voyager style, rather than continuing in the late DS9/movie style.

If Picard was blown up in Paris, why did he wake up back home instead of a Paris hospital? Or was there supposed to be a time jump in there? It intially seemed like his caretakers were being evasive. I thought they were going to play it off like 'You fell off the roof of the house. What were you doing up there anyway?' kind of thing. But I'm glad they didn't. I get annoyed by gaslighting stories. Further, I hope they don't turn out to have mixed alliegances or are working for whatever passed for Romulan high command these days.

Is there any method of portraying future cities that don't draw on the cyberpunk style? Urban sprawl over the horizon, super tall towers, lots of neon? Boston was on the more mild side of that, but it's still over-familiar imagery. I suppose the alernative would be some kind of biotech. Growing a city. But the Federation isn't fond of genetic engineering either.

I'm actually overwhelmed by how good this show is so far. Even without Patrick Stewart's gravitas, the show would be amazing. It's written, filmed, directed, and acted beautifully. There's so much love for Star Trek's universe, and it shines through brilliantly. But Patrick Stewart does pull it all together, and elevates an already well-made series to another level.

I'm looking forward to whatever comes next.

One episode in... I am... unsure.

Which isn't as bad as it could have been.

I will say I am pleased that they wound up with the "Daughter of Data" angle, because I absolutely feared the much speculated on "Daughter of the Queen Borg and Picard" one, which I wanted to (figuratively) hock a big wad of spit at when people were tossing it around. This, in contrast, is actually a good idea, even if the actual execution feels shakey, and the world building of the current Federation potentially cringe inducing (it's not quite there yet).

Here's what I am fearful of.  I don't want this to veer toward the Dark N' Gritty we KNOW this production team creams their pants on. Stewart himself tossed out a few hints that he actually pushed them more towards "a changed Federation" than had even been planned, and in this case Sir Patrick may not be totally in line with me. 

I KNOW they also likely feel they need to tie this in to the next season of Discovery, which we already know is based on the premise that IT will be the hopeful show, but built on the skeleton of a scenario where the Federation is all but destroyed and needs to be revived. I fear that means that "Picard" will be seen as the setup for that fall of the Federation, meaning this can ONLY end dark.

We shall see.

Speculation: there are no adopted parents.  They're a digital illusion used to create past memories for her.  The current version of her mother was a computer program, and the past versions were created scenarios.  My further speculation is that she's actually only been alive a short time. That missing scientist created her and her sister, unleashed them on the world, but then something happened to him.  The computer program is still running of course, and tried to protect her.

I do get the impression that she didn't know she had a twin (she didn't mention one, right? Or am I misremembering?) and the fact that the OTHER sister knows is significant.  It's supposed to make us question if maybe the other sister is ACTUALLY in the know about what she is.  The preview implied that the guy spying on her thinks she doesn't know, but this seems like some kind of double bluff situation.

I was actually really shocked that they killed off Dahj before the episode was even over.  Clearly, they were holding back Soji's existence as a surprise.  They did a good job with that.  

They certainly hit the continuity porn button hard, not that I'm complaining.

Loved seeing Picard at the vineyard (and Orla Brady playing one of Picard's vineyard staff!)

And I find myself surprisingly intrigued by the story around the synthetics and Dahj/Soji.

To which I'll add that there was a visible "glitch" during her "mother's" conversation with her. I didn't catch what the display said right before Dajh started searching for Picard, but that glitch is what makes me suspect she might not have been having a conversation with a real person, but an implanted program to go along with those false memories.

I enjoyed this quite a lot; it was a little slow to start, but quickly got me interested, and the visuals are astounding. I'm a little concerned that they may dive too deeply into the nostalgia well and rehash old plots or (worse) write storylines around ways to bring old characters back into the mix and create a real artificiality, but we'll see.

I am surprised Picard didn't ask why/how Dajh had gotten admitted to Daystrom (it seems a little too coincidental that the one synth got a scholarship there). I was happy to hear Maddox is involved somehow; I don't know if Brian Brophy is coming back, but that would be interesting to see his character so many years after "The Measure of a Man." 

I also kind of wonder if a resurrected Lore might have been behind the Synth revolution somehow, but we'll see.

Kind of curious that Treadaway's Romulan has an English accent, though I suppose there's no reason to think all Romulans speak American English (lol). I find it interesting that Victor Frankenstein is playing a part in a story about synthetic life; Treadaway may want to check and see if he's being typecast.

Ugg. The Borg Queen would have had to help herself to some of Jean-Luc's DNA or sperm, just in case he hadn't been violated enough. So glad they didn't go there. I am comparing Dahj to Lal, way back in Season Three, the daughter that malfunctioned.

I suppose it depends on how intelligent the AI and holograms are. There must be some advanced version of the Turing test, and it's one the AIs want to fail. Now there's an interesting idea. An AI who knows its existence is scary, hides away, and minds its own business. Just quietly gets on with its work. How would you even detect such a being?

Other than feeling very old, I enjoyed it quite a bit. I liked seeing nice, caring Romulans, and   I didn't think Spiner looked as old as I expected him to. Caked in makeup, but not old.

I really liked it. Honestly, I haven't been excited by Star Trek since TNG went off the air.  Prequels just aren't my thing but this felt right.  And the previews looked great. 

I watched Nemesis for the first time in preparation for Picard and am glad I did. (I had given up on the ST movies by that point.) Well, not glad because it wasn't a great movie but as homework it could have been worse.  At least it was free streaming on Tubi.

I think the one at the Archive was a hologram (didn't it fade in and out a couple of times?), so maybe the Synth ban is just on corporeal artificial intelligences?

Okay, I'll fully admit that I'm going in with a lot of biases here, since Star Trek: The Next Generation is one of my favorite shows despite a rough first two seasons (and then the final season going off the rails a bit with scenarios like the time Dr. Crusher had a fling with a ghost through a candle.  What drugs where they on?!), and Captain Jean-Luc Picard is not only my favorite character out of all of Trek, but one of my favorite television characters of all time.  So, in short, there really isn't a way I'm not going to love this!

But trying to keep an unbiased view of things, I still thought this was generally well done and I'm glad to see the story continuing.  A bit of a slow burn and there was definitely a lot of exposition dumps and technobabble (classic Trek!), but I'm intrigued by a lot of it.  Not surprised that Picard would eventually have a fallout with Starfleet, because there was always a sense that their opposing views in certain aspects could end up coming to ahead, and there would finally be a point when Picard would have enough.  Curious to see where the rest of the Enterprise crew ended up (well, baring the Deep Space Nine folks!), and if some might actually be opposed to how Picard handled things.

While I know they'll be going back to space soon, I did like seeing more glimpses of Future Earth, like Starfleet's headquarters in San Fransisco and Boston being known as Greater Boston now.  France still looks beautiful for sure!

Heh, Picard has a dog named "Number One."  I bet he would be able to sit more naturally on a chair then Riker did (I kid!  I believe I heard Jonathan Frakes either had issues with the uniforms or back problems, and that's why he would straddle those chairs, instead of sitting down like normal.)

No surprise that Patrick Stewart fit right back into the role and was his normal awesome self.  Great seeing Brent Spiner again as Data, even though I was able to tell that he was older despite the make-up.

As for the new faces, Isa Briones was impressive as Dahj, and I'm glad she'll continue as this other character/sister.  Alison Pill is always good, even if her character on The Newsroom was a bit much.  Harry Treadaway's Romulan guy is so going to be bad news!  Fun seeing Merrin Dungey as the interviewer.  Really enjoyed the characters played by Orla Brady and Jamie McShane, and I really hope nothing happens to them, because they seem like the type of characters that could end up being harmed (or worse) to really raise the stakes and make it personal for Picard.

The Romulans are building a Borg cube?!!

Looking forward to seeing who else shows up here.

I gather it was more a height thing. He's tall enough to straddle those chairs, so he did.

Another thought. Jurati says it would take a thousand years to create organic/synthetic life. Furthermore, it's banned in the Federation. But maybe one of the other galactic powers has been working on it.

It isn't Klingon or Ferengi style. The Bajorans and Cardassians are probably still recovering from the Dominion War. The Dominion aren't doing so well either. But maybe one of the others.

If it was disabled by that virus Janeway set off at the end of Voyager, that could explain it. I'm sure the show will tell us more in time.

The Romulan didn't have acid blood. He crunched down on a capsule just before he spat. It burned his face too.

Probably intended as a last resort, just because Picard fought so hard for Data in the past.

The cube was captioned as a reclamation site and Soji talked about fixing broken minds. Sounds like they are working on ex Borg.

I really enjoyed this. I've been looking forward to this show all year and it didn't disappoint. Eager for next week now to meet the rest of the cast and find out where the story goes from here

Well, moreover, its a hologram - it can be whatever you want it to be.  If you are want to create holographic miners, for instance, just make them holographic machines - don't give them any sentience and certainly don't make them look like people.

In series like Mass Effect they drew a distinction between a smart computer, which they called a VI (virtual intelligence) and a truly sentient machine, which they called an AI.   AI were banned, VI were legal.   Things like the Archive Index or a starship's computer would be considered VI and therefore allowed.   A true synthetic would fall under the AI category.

I guess whoever built the synths for the Federation never heard of "3 Laws Safe".

Some odd choices in episode one, maybe on purpose, maybe by accident.

- Confronted with a kill squad of (Romulans, I guess?) who knocked off at least two people, instead of pursuing who they were and why, Picard ... rushes to the archives .... to see a painting that matches one he already has. 

- The on-camera admission to why Picard left Star Fleet was too pat, coming after his Romulan handlers told him that the interviewer promised multiple times not to ask about it. Picard should have ended the interview right there, or they should have shown him being slowly guided to a "you can't handle the truth!" moment. They did neither, and I just kept wondering, "Why are you answering this question now?" Those that run Starfleet won't be eager to aid him after being publicly criticized.

- Same for Picard's Excalibur-like sudden realization that he has been hiding away on the sidelines for years when he could have been doing good, or at least something. Too rushed, not enough reason shown for him to have arrived here, and it minimized the impact.

- I'm not sure why Picard had such an immediate affinity for Dahj. Here is a man who had isolated himself for years, who sees a sudden intruder and knows enough to realize this person could be a foe. Yes, his dog liked her. That's fine. But why sudden;t jump on the Dahj bus? With minimal info, BTW.

Sir Patrick is over 70, and I admire his skills at any age, much less his current one. At the same time, he moved fairly feebly through the episode. I wonder if his choosing to go to the archives is emblematic of this older Picard, and will be reflected in future choices. Let the new young folks do the fighting and adventure.

I'm interested. And I love seeing this world back on my screen. And it can get as dark as it wants to, as long as the characters are true to themselves. Sometimes the world is dark.

I thought the painting on his wall didn't show her face (the hood was up). That's why he had to see the one in the archives--it did show the face he now recognized as Dahj's.

That what I mean by matches. I mean, he’s 90 percent there and he has to see the face? Versus figure out who the kill squad is? Without the paintings, he knows the girl is a synth and is likely connected to Data. It seems in the scale of important things, seeing that her face appears in a painting wasn’t up there. Also, I could argue that the painting also looked like Princess Leia, so.... a match is useful I guess?

This may indeed be how Star Trek views it - there was a fair amount of focus on positronic brains, the implication being that requiring human level intelligence required particular hardware, and wasn't simply a property of software running on a computer.

Star Trek has been a bit vague on the abilities of AI. On the one hand the ship's computer, whilst able to communicate, clearly had limits - but then the same computer could happily simulate Einstein for people to converse with, or a self-aware Moriarty, not to mention Voyager's Doctor. Why not just stick that AI in a robot, and how does that fit with the ban?

Even if the Star Trek view is that a computer AI can't achieve sentience, ST TNG The Measure Of A Man made it clear that this wasn't known for Data as an objective fact either, but was a point to be argued. It was ruled that Data was sentient, and none of Picard's arguments relied Data's positronic brain; the arguments would have worked just as well if the Doctor had been the subject of that trial.

Still, even if this doesn't make sense,  I suppose knee jerk bans don't have to make sense - it may be that androids with positronic brains are banned because they're the ones that went bad; or maybe it applies to any AI with a physical body.

Yes, he was on Colbert recently to promote the show, and he was quite spry, popping up and down out of his seat better than someone half his age could probably do. The feebleness is an acting choice - Picard is over 90 and he has, by his own admission, mostly been waiting around to die. It makes sense that he'd be a bit creaky.

I personally thought this was great. I had zero expectations going in, other than a general fondness for Stewart, and I was very pleased with what I saw. It acknowledges the past but doesn't languish in it, depending solely on nostalgia. They aren't trying to recreate the Picard from the series or the movies - this is a man in the in the twilight of his life, and they are being honest about that, which is refreshing. He's finding renewed purpose, but he's still not truly going back to where he was. And finally - it looks gorgeous. Beautifully shot and good production.

I also like that this Utopian society still has problems. Problems that stem from fear, just like we do now.

As a Bostonian I really was tickled to have them show 24th century Boston.    I also got a chuckle that apparently King's is still around (at least per a screen-shot that showed there was a neon sign for the place in the scene.)
