Episode Discussion II: The TFGH

Culture Check: How can we discuss a character's or actor's appearance without objectifying them? How can we express likes or dislikes and still respect an individual's humanity or be mindful that a character represents a person someone else might relate to or identify with?

This popped up in my social media memories today and  it’s a delightful few minutes of nostalgia. I had shared it originally because I love the song they used, but now it’s a lovely little time capsule. So many dead characters! So many recasts! So many cases of SORAS!

GH Christmas 2009

Thank you for sharing!  I don’t remember Mac and Alexis? And who was the blonde and the guy taking Robin,  Patrick and Emma?

Haven’t posted here in a bit, so hello! I tend To enjoy watching daytime during the holidays and in the summer, but especially at the holidays.

I am very disappointed that there are very few signs of Christmas in Port Charles. On the young and the restless, they were doing a really nice job of really beautiful decorations, but without overdoing it.

Does anyone know why the town Square is called Rice Plaza? I’m surprised it doesn’t honor one of the legendary GH families or characters.

just wanted to comment to on my favorite line of the week

Actually, from I think it was Sonny to Anna when she was feeling very guilty about encouraging Dex to become a cop

” don’t turn Dex’s choice into your mistake”

Something like that

I’m sorry it’s not the exact quote but I think you get the idea. I just thought that was really fantastic line.

I liked Dex. I wish they hadn’t killed him off.
I’ve read elsewhere ideas about him having a twin that comes to town since we don’t know much about his family. I really like the actor so I’d be down for that.!

Just got off the phone with my broker. Told him to sell all shares of ELQ and Aurora Media. None of those fuckers give a shit about all the poor shareholders losing their shirts so Mikey can stick it to Drew for sticking it in Willow.

You should have sold your Aurora shares when the CEO went to prison for insider trading and was allowed back to run the company when he left prison.

ELQ stock should have been sold the moment their CEO disappeared (not the first time when he was presumed dead) but the second time when it was discovered that his side hussle was being an arms dealer. Oh the pickle madness.

I could not for the life me remember who she was but I think this is right. Lisa — Niles, right?

And I had also totally forgotten that Mac & Alexis were ever a thing. I do remember thinking it made sense that Sam, Kristina and Molly were pushing it, as he is an excellent girl dad.

But oh, my Spencer family loving heart. Laura’s children making sure her angel got on the tree. So glad JJ is back, so sad that TC is gone. Haven’t seen today’s ep yet, but looking forward to the LL2 family stuff.

Why does Curtis feel so entitled to the CEO position? What are his qualifications for it? This would be a better story if the show had Curtis wanting that position so he can give Portia the high life he feels she deserves. Otherwise, Curtis is just a guy who could barely run a night club.

I'm happy to see Cam but I hope he leaves soon because there's someone in Port Charles killing people connected to his mother and he is/was close to the two Black Widows so he needs to get a few thousand miles from Port Charles before he ends up a resident of the Port Charles cemetery.

Gretchen, before you leave, share your hair care routine with Lucky.

like i said i get it. I'm not condoning Willow and Drew here. But this is strictly to Michael. Michael only knew about one kiss when he got drunk and screwed Sasha getting her pregnant. Everything else was gravy. in my mind there really isn't "it's worse." Cheating is cheating in my book. Michael doesn't get a pass because Willow did it first, or isn't showing remorse. my thing is.

A: michael is not innocent here either.  and more importantly
B: he's venting to Chase. like no bro. lol

LOL at Jason giving Carly the "it wasn't my secret to tell" treatment! Carly and Nina both need to take a few steps back and realize their children are adults. However, if it gets more scenes of Ava making herself drinks and being the peanut gallery then I'm okay with it.

Aww Liz and two of her kids together for the holidays. And hey Lucky, remember when both of those kids called you dad? Also Lucky and Ric posturing on who was better equipped to help Liz was good. I kinda hope we get an odd couple investigation with those two and hopefully it involves a caper where Ric throws Lucky into the GH showers.

I wouldn't trust Drew, Curtis or Michael to run a company. Even if the 3 of them merged together like 3 raccoons under a trench coat they still wouldn't make up one competent business person.

Jordan gives good stinkeye, they should have her do it more often.

Lulu, this time of year it's especially frowned upon to look a gift horse in the mouth, so quit looking at Charlotte's absence as a bad thing and something you need to remedy.

In the Battle of the Moms today Elizabeth wins by a mile--shocking, I know!  But, really, BH just really aces those "proud, supportive mom" scenes like no one else (ok, maybe Genie).  Contrast that to Bulldog Carly and Delusional Nina.  The former still ranting about how Michael ~allowed Willow to take the kids, as if she's in some foreign country and they'll never see them again and the latter dancing as fast as she can to get the separation to stick.  At least Nina decorated nice, though.  Carly's too busy stomping around town like Godzilla to even give much thought to Joss and her pain.

I remember at the time thinking NLG should put the kibosh on it because the show just loved giving Mac bonus girls. If Mac got too chummy with the Coven Alexis might take a long fall off a short parapet.

I want to see Cam visit with more loved ones, esp. Grandma Laura. Dex wasn't connected to Elizabeth; he was a patient at the hospital. She only knew him as a police officer and boyfriend of Joss, who happens to be Lucky and Aiden's cousin. I don't think that term can apply to Trina because nobody can prove Spencer is dead and I think Heather killed Rory when she was aiming for someone else. In Joss's case, Oscar had terminal cancer - no mystery there.

The highlight of the show for me was to have Cameron back. Great scenes with BH, Lucky and too-old Aiden. I like his cellist girlfriend too.

LOL Carly and Jason fighting over whether Michael is old enough to make his own decisions or if Calry has to micromanage him.  This same scene has been going on for decades. I can see Carly like Edward deciding what is best for her children even when they are in their sixties.

Not that he doesn't deserve it but so much for Drew going to prison for Carly. If he expected Carly's gratitude, he doesn't know her at all. Come to think of it, if Carly had gone to prison herself, at least it would give her adult kids a chance to make their own decisions and live their own lives.

Michael and Curtis are too stupid to run a company, especially after the insider trading shenanigans of a couple of years ago. As @TVbitch said, none of them care about the shareholders.

Aiden has more wrinkles than his parents combined.

While Nina got a very elegant Christmas decoration set up, I would say that it was more adult than kiddie friendly for children that are under 6 years old.

The thing about Aurora is that it was originally bought when Drew thought he was Jason so he used Jason's money to buy Julian's holdings. Did Drew ever pay back the money taken from Jason?

For Trina and Joss, they have 5 dead boys (Oscar, Dev, Rory, Spencer and Dex). Rather than trying to make Gio happen with them, there is hottie Isaiah that is being wasted on Jordan. Have Joss get enthused again about being doctor. Have Trina do an art exhibition at GH like she did at Ava's Gallery.

Regarding Michael, Willow, Drew, Sasha. They are all guilty of cheating and emotional affairs. Michael went looking for Sasha after the confrontion about nannycam video was released. He should have been talking to his wife once he found out about the kiss rather than sharing confidence with his next babymama.

Meanwhile why is Willow inviting Drew over for Christmas? If he didn't screw over his nephew and his best friends, he would have been welcomed for the Christmas holiday. I just don't get why Willow looks so googly-eyed when she sees Drew. The man has not shaven since he won the election nor does he seem capable of growing out a full beard anymore. He looks like a bum in a tight fitted suit.

But really, in Michael's mind, isn't Willow kissing Drew once just as bad as them fucking?  She's such a goody goody that a kiss with someone outside of her marriage might as well be "it's over, she's in love with him and not me. I guess I can do whatever I want."

I mean, she did cheat on Chase with Michael, so I really don't understand how he can view her as a goody goody.  Michael seems to have invented in his own head that Willow only did that because was in loovvveee with him.  Well, Michael, newsflash...Willow is a ho!  Just like you!  lol

Grandma Carly and Grandma Nina are playing 3D chess to get custody of the kids because their moron children are too busy spicing up their records with corporate fraud and inviting their affair partners over for Christmas dinner.

Is there another next of kin out there who can save these children. Tracy should throw her hat in since she’s already housing every other Quartermaine spawn under 18.

The thing is that none of them are qualified for the job. Not Michael, not Drew, not Curtis. All of them fail upward.

BTW, someone should remind Drew that he started Aurora with Jason's mob money.

Even as someone who doesn't care about Willow, the SLS and everything to do with them, my jaw dropped. Why is she, as you stated, still looking at Sleazoid with stars in her eyes and inviting him over to Nina's? I guess she didn't mean it when she told him to stay away from her. Oh wait. That was BEFORE their night of boinking was exposed.

And Drew? You haven't been sworn in yet-so stop acting as if you're still not Congressman-Elect. Yeah, yeah, McKonkey is dead, and swearing in is a couple weeks away, suspension of whatthefuckever, blah, blah, blah, fish cakes.

And also agree on that scrub.

It's really eerie how much Lipton looks like JJ. I could totally buy Cameron as Lucky's if we already didn't know he was Zander's. I won't lie-I got  the goosebumps listening to Cameron and Lucky singing. I wish we could have had Lucky/JJ sing a verse solo and then have them both sing the chorus again.

Siiiiiiiiigh.....

I, for one, am glad there was no anger or animosity. Just drop it already. I also wish Hudson had been able to make an appearance.

I laughed SO HARD at watching Jason telling Cujo to mind her own bidnez. Like she's going to listen to him. You watch, she'll go stampeding and stick her nose in and tell Jason, like she did the other time: "I changed my mind!"

Willow inviting Drew over for Christmas just LOL

I am in the minority who really likes Willow but what is she doing you have just been exposed to the entire family for cheating and you think the best way to deal with that is to invite Drew over for Christmas the man you cheated with.

Unless Willow is trying to make sure Michael never takes her back I can see no reason why Willow would invite Drew to Christmas at Nina`s.

Meanwhile Nina seems to finally be living the dream having Willow and the kids with her - decides to hire a lawyer without telling Willow I do not see how that will end well for Nina. Nina just needs to slow down and ask Willow what she wants to do.

Looking forward to Sasha and Michael being found out and the baby reveal no doubt Carly will justify it as being fine.

They weren't. Everyone was obnoxiously pushing them to become a couple—only because they were both single at the time—but they both knew it wasn't going to happen. They did a few things together just to shut everyone up, but it was never going to go farther than that.

The brazen behavior with Willow and Drew is wild, but fun. It's actual drama at least, not just cueball jewel thieves from outside the world of Port Charles.

Patrick Mulcahey had re-crafted Drew into being kind of the political/business-minded Quartermaine operator and a rakish, somewhat gray rogue character, but not a full-on heel as he's rapidly become now under the returning writing team. Both iterations worked for me and I think Cameron Mathison plays them well, but I do think Drew's likely to join Sam in the hereafter very soon. Which is too bad IMO, but unsurprising. This show always knows how to squander good opportunities and you could still get more mileage out of Willow and Drew and their scandal throwing it in everyone's face.

This is all going to blow up in spectacular fashion once Willow finds out Drew's also been banging Nina.  I look forward to* Drew doing his signature hand to chest and telling her how it meant nothing and Nina was the aggressor.

Yep, she's probably going to tell Michael he never should have broken up with Sasha, or let her break up with him.  She's going to be all "Sasha is my real daughter in law, by heart!"

Just now, sacrebleu said:

Oy Nina, still her own worst enemy. Hiring Martin without Willow's okay, and keeping the Drew-sex a secret.

The thing is, she should get in front of it by saying she had hoped keeping Drew 'occupied' would keep him away from Willow. ( Nina said as much to Maxie) .

Yep, I hate this writing for her.  Willow would still be pissy, because Willow is ALWAYS pissy, but it's the out for Nina and reasonable people would tell Willow she needs to get over it.

I cannot get over how much Cam and Liz look more like Brother and Sister instead of Mother and Son. Rebecca Herbst has a portrait of someone in her attic, I swear...

In other news, I just saw the first promos for CBS's new African American Soap, Beyond the Gates. Based on the previews, if GH doesn't elevate its game, the show is going to be hemorrhaging viewers by March 2025.

Does that really matter in the age of streaming? This isn't the 80s where you have to watch live or miss an episode. I watch this show (when I watch and not just follow here) on Hulu. Since I have Paramount+ I would also probably watch BTG via streaming.

Well, who would have thought? The show decided to throw its critics a bone and acknowledge Willow's issues. (Thanks, lurking intern, whoever you are.)

Other than that, the stuff that should have been cute or dramatic fell flat for me. Jordan was better fully clothed making faces at Drew yesterday than naked, wrapped in a towel trapped with Isaiah in the steam room. (OTOH, he did look remarkably fit. 🙂)

Jason/Sasha and Jason/Tracy felt like filler. Drew/Curtis was underwhelming, they both are annoying. And Joss running into Cam and Gretchen on their way out of town - all I could think was that means no more Webber/Spencer family scenes. Boo.

About time the show acknowledged Willow has deep seated issues. She's still unbelievably stupid with this Drew must be here on Christmas Eve. Too dumb to live.

Drew getting his was satisfying. But Curtis feeling like he was owed something or assuming that Drew was going to make him CEO because he did a great job is all on him.

Show, we all know Michael doesn't work out. And here's Chase, showing Michael more grace than he deserves. I guess him acknowledging what he did to Chase is something.

Jordan and Isaiah are really pretty together. They're both hot, they could be interesting if the writers made an effort, and I wanna like them together, but I don't see chemistry.

I still say that Joss and Dex look like they could be related.

Geez, Sasha, if Jason wants to take his dishes to the sink or put them in the dishwasher, let him. It's not as if he has some specialty he's demanding to use the kitchen for.

[Michael is] venting to Chase. like no bro. lol

Michael acknowledged the irony, so some writer remembered a bit of show history. I liked how Chase asked Michael why he and Willow can't be honest with each other. Those two so desperately need counseling—couples and individual—but of course they won't get it. And too bad Michael hasn't told anyone he slept with Sasha. Makes all of his snippiness about Drew "seducing [his] wife" (hate that phrasing with the heat of a thousand nuns) ring hollow.

Why Tracy circles the Q wagons around Michael is beyond me. What use does she have for him?

Can Martin legally take Willow on as a client without talking to her first? She's not a minor who can't hire an attorney on her own.

LOL that Curtis thinks his "legally binding contract" is going to mean anything once Michael decides Curtis is replaceable.

The steam room nonsense was a snore. Isaiah has met other women who are much more interesting than Jordan. He should have gotten stuck with one of them.

Especially given the weakness of the rest of the episode, I could have done with much longer scenes between Joss and Cam, and I wish Trina had also been able to reconnect.  Will have to settle for those crumbs.

I could be remotely intrigued with a Jason/Sasha friendship based on the converse directions of their lives:  he, the good boy gone hitman, she the con artist turned legit cook.  When SB plays Jason with a little bit of vulnerability, he has chemistry with a number of people, and today I saw some with Sasha.  When he plays the iron man, no one penetrates.

When she was with Gregory, Tracy was capable of delivering some considered philosophy on life, and death, and she displayed true empathy.  I call foul on the writers who have decided now to write her as blind to the suffering going on in her own household.  Shame on them.

Unbelievable that Michael didn't shrivel away from Chase's calling him a good man, since Michael knows exactly what he did to cheat on Willow.  That would have been a good moment for a flashback.

Nina is meddlingly nervy to essentially push Willow and Michael into a separation that neither of them have said they wanted.  Have they even spoken alone since the video?

To my eye, Isaiah has chemistry with several people, but not with Jordan.  Jordan has chemistry with no one, save for an occasional spark with Drew.  I would like Jordan and Drew to ride off into the sunset together.

Finally caught up.  I have to echo what I saw so many people on here post - Alexa is fab and has blended in seamlessly with the cast.  Maybe it’s because Lulu has been gone for so long but this recast is a rare hit.  LOVED all the reunions, especially Rocco.  The actor that plays him is so natural and sweet.  I’ve always been an Alexa fan and for me she’s a welcome addition to the cast.

Lucky and Elizabeth…..SWOON.  I’m loving their easy chemistry.  Him playing that song and seeing the flashbacks to when he first played it for her…..I mean it was pitch perfect.  They are not children anymore, they are mature adults with baggage and experiences and I love how they are just trying to figure things out.  William Lipton coming back is always welcome and I just loved all those scenes.

I’m not too torn up about Dex being killed but I do think it’s horrible that Joss has lost two boyfriends in such a short time span.  I have my issues with Joss but Eden McCoy did really well with those scenes.

Drew is on the verge of ruining Cameron Mathison for me for good and I really hate that.  One more reason to hate Drew.

Carly was positively rabid trying to stop Nina and Willow from leaving with the kids.  Jaw jutting out and snarl in full effect.  It was so off putting.

Isiah is another great addition to this cast, although like others have said he’s wasted on Jordan.  Maybe Willow or even better Sasha would be a good pairing.  She needs some fun and joy in her life.

A question since I missed a bunch of episodes…..why did Cyrus kill Sam?  She had already donated the liver so why did he have to kill her?

That scene with Jason was all over the place, wasn't ? I didn't mind Tracy telling Jason she hates him and he's a hit man thug. And she can hold on to her resentment about how he's treated the Qs over the years. But her telling Jason he doesn't belong at the mansion when she knows he's not thrilled to be there either but is doing it for Danny is puzzling. No one knows yet. We also don’t know if the same person stabbed Dex. One person could’ve stabbed him, and another (probably Cyrus) give him digitalis.

No clue about a link between Sam & Dex outside of being operated on at GH. If it weren’t for us seeing Cyrus inject Sam, I would suspect new surgeon Isaiah.

Speaking of him, the steam room scenes w/ Jordan were far from steamy.

This whole episode was boring to me but it was nice to see Cam again.

Sasha teasing Jason about the reindeer sweater was cute. “Knit stretches…”. 🤣

Not sure if they were chem testing Tracy & Martin, but the actors looked like they had a ball filming these scenes. “Psych!”, indeed. 🤣

We don't even know yet if it was digitalis that killed Dex.  It would make things more interesting (to me) if whoever stabbed Dex had put some kind of late-acting poison on the knife.

and what bothered me about it (this clip was on YT but nothing else) - like. Steve, Show - make him show some regret about this. because that's the one thing that bothers me to high heaven. Jason's big issue was that the family couldn't accept "who he had become." (I'm sorry i think they were allowed some time to accept that the young man that they adored was for all intents and purposes dead, and they had to get to know a new one. you don't just jump feet first into that reality) THEN acknowledge the fact that because of someon who wants to like "rule them all"  - groomed him to do his murderous dirty work. and because of that a LOT of people in his family died because of Jason

a little remorse and regret would go such a long way.
and honestly. like. i don't even care that jason here is for danny because i just have this feeling Carly will need something and Jason will go "Danny who?"

I feel it does.  Using myself as an example, I only watch GH, and sometimes I want out.  But I don't have the bandwidth to try another existing soap because there's too much backstory.  But I do plan on watching Gates from the very beginning.  With Kemo gone, and this writing for Cynthia looking like it could end in her exit...I could see myself walking away finally.  It really depends on what happens.  But I could see it.

Culture Check: How can we discuss a character's or actor's appearance without objectifying them? How can we express likes or dislikes and still respect an individual's humanity or be mindful that a character represents a person someone else might relate to or identify with?
