  1. And only 8 Asian actors have actually ever been nominated overall so it's a pretty exclusive club. Honestly I'm pleasantly surprised they bothered to nominate an Asian actor. Talk of diversity is pretty much always about black actors, so I'm always a bit surprised when people remember that us Asians exist too. Go Dev!
  2. Ugh people can actually refer to this movie as Oscar-nominated? Gah.
  3. I loved La La Land but I'm dubious as to the Sound Mixing nom. But I'd honestly rather have La La Land win for "City of Stars" than Best Picture. Maybe it's a bit of the Lin Manuel Miranda backlash I feel (I love him but I'm just a bit tired of hearing about him and the PEGOT) but it's also such a gorgeous song.
  4. Well we know the Middle Place exists because Janet (who is not a part of Michael's experiment) is the one who told Elenor about it. So going off that we know that, we know Trevor really is an Bad Place architect and Beadie (the Good Place architect) is real, as are Good Places.
  5. He's Just Not That Into You -- who know Justin Long could work so well as a romantic lead?
  6. Seems like Courtney's only crime was walking into the living room when Marissa and Kyle were having a conversation, though Coryanne was also there so i guess Marissa just wanted to yell at Courtney. I felt bad for her. A couple other girls (and Courtney) were also hovering in the room upstairs when Marissa and Kyle were talking as well. I guess Marissa just doesn't like Courtney very much, which is a bit understandable as she can be a bit whiny but she didn't really do anything wrong this time imo. I liked how Chanel Iman was giving the models quicks tips while posing they were together. She was actually quite helpful!
  7. I'm pretty sure the video is based on Ed Sheeran's "Thinking Out Loud"
  8. I was disappointed when Carlo died because he was hot and I'm shallow haha. I did want to know more about him and see a reunion with his brother as well. I did find Maria's storyline to be very sad even if she was slightly annoying at times. I recently finished the show and really enjoyed it. I did like that they didn't always spell it out for us, though sometimes I think they were a bit too subtle. When Vic got in the car accident there was a moment when I was like "wait, did he just die and come back to life?" but then all he had was the one head wound so I thought he just survived the accident. And then it was revealed that he came back to life. And with Charlie, was the implication that he committed suicide? Resurrected!Charlie saw his past self crying over a beer at the bar and then..? I just took that to be the implication there. Of the squad, I found Charlie to be my favorite with Kirstie as a close second. I hoped (still hoping tbh) Charlie would end up being bi because he and Kirstie were so sweet together! I love how he would fly to her side if she ever gave an indication she needed help and generally just how they always had each other's backs. Romantic or not, I need more of them together. I definitely think there should have been more reactions to technology. I mean John Doe apparently died in the 1830s, he should be completely overwhelmed by everything.
  9. So Jianyu isn't actually dead? Tahani has to wait for her soul mate? I would love to see the real Jianyu. I think it would be hilarious to see Tahani and the silent Jianyu connect (since he is her soul mate after all.)
  10. Was the Start the Fire song meant to be bad? I liked it. Honestly I thought that after their heart to heart where Keith talked about his views on jazz that Seb came around a bit and actually enjoyed himself in the concert scene. No, he wasn't a convert and was still devoted to traditional jazz but he understood where Keith was coming from and did like being part of a successful band even if it wasn't his ultimate goal. Was that I interpreting that wrong? I read a review that said that Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake would have been better casting. AK played the earnest young aspiring actress in The Last Five Years, but that character had a sadness to it that Mia isn't really supposed to have that instead needed the sweetness Emma Stone has. As fine as singer as JT is the acting was a larger factor than the singing in this role imo.
  11. I think there were toilets in the cells. I remember seeing them in a wider shot of the whole structure. Also there was no way those books were hers, she only regained her sight like what 4 years ago? Not to mention Hap didn't even know so I doubt Prairie spent a lot of time learning to read (with her eyes) in that time. She would have been reading at an elementary school level, not reading big advanced books like those. If they were in braille it would have made sense.
  12. Does anyone actually take Justin Timberlake seriously as an actor? Ryan's the only one getting Oscar noms here lol. I mean there's also Keri Russell, but like 2.
  13. Technically it kinda is. James Dean/Marlon Brando/Montgomery Clift really popularized the more naturalistic style on film. And that wasn't until the 1950s. Stage actors were largely used when talkies first came in (many silent actors had speech problems or accents that didn't fly anymore) but when filmmaking became less stage-like and people started to realize what they could do with the medium, stage actors were found to be too stiff and unsubtle to suit it. Over emoting still happened but it was the style I guess.
  14. I remember Elizabeth Debicki as a statuesque 60s villainess in The Man from U.N.C.L.E.
  15. I just saw La La Land and noticed that the lyrics for the Golden Globe (and probably Oscar) nominated song "City of Stars" were written by Pasek and Paul, of Dear Evan Hansen. I hope they win, the song is so beautiful and bittersweet. I haven't heard LMM's song from Moana yet but I'm rooting for City of Stars to win.
  16. I loved it. It felt like a modern technicolor Hollywood musical, much in the way The Artist was a modern silent picture. The colors were so saturated and bright! I'm shipper trash so I was sad that Mia and Sebastian didn't end up together in the end but they both achieved their dreams and real happiness. I do feel like maybe the singing could have been a bit better, but Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone were fairly competent. "City of Stars" was so gorgeous, I hope it wins the Oscar. I have heard the song from Moana yet, but City of Stars felt so haunting and beautiful and bittersweet. The epilogue was very much like those metaphorical dance sequences in the old musicals. It reminded me of the "Broadway Melody" dance sequence in Singing in the Rain. I remember seeing comments like "Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling doing a movie together again?? Wtf??" but I think the movie wouldn't have worked without their chemistry. Here's hoping Ryan Gosling doesn't miss out on an Oscar nom while the female lead snags one the way it happened with Michelle Williams for Blue Valentine. He and Emma were both wonderful and it wouldn't have worked if they weren't both giving it their all. I also loved how diverse the world seemed to be. From Sebastian's sister's fiancé to the singers in the opening sequence. Even Mia's roommates. ETA: I loved the "love letter to [insert city here]" vibe the film had for LA. There are so many "love letter to NYC" films out there, it'a about time LA's gotten some love too!
  17. It isn't used very often, generally just as a last resort if talk therapy and/or drug therapy aren't effective.
  18. Yea, he was pretty against type in August Osage County. Not British for one, more importantly not an arrogant genius who may or may not be humbled by the end. Little Charles was pretty beat down.
  19. I remember seeing Dunkirk and the evacuation in Atonement, where James McAvoy's character died.
  20. I shouldn't have been surprised but somehow I was still surprised when Hailey and Rodrigo actually hooked up at the end of the season. i figured it was just going to be UST for the whole series and anticlimactically fizzle out with a "we love each other as friends" episode but they actually went for it. I wonder where the show goes from here.
  21. I suppose it's beneficial for Taylor too, trying to make an effort to win over the One Directioners who probably hate her because she dated Harry for a hot minute. (Do they still hate her for that? I'm really not knowledgable on 1D stuff)
  22. I feel better about liking "Love Yourself" now that I know that Ed Sheeran was one of the songwriters.
  23. Golden Globe nominations! For John Lithgow! Claire Foy! The series!
