I guess I’ll just be glad that he has a helmet on. 🤷🏻♀️ Was it an electric bike of some sort? I couldn't tell from the pics. It looks light and appropriately sized. He has a regular bike helmet on. My kids started riding a gas powered honda mini when they were about 8. The grandparents had 19 acres of farm land for them to ride around. The thing was heavy and the rule was you had to wear pants because the muffler got hot and could burn a leg and a motorcycle type helmet had to be worn. Husband won the Honda in a church raffle when he was 9. He and his 4 siblings rode that thing around for many years. We still have the thing and our grands beg to ride it. Currently doesn't run and it is hard to get parts, so no riding for them yet. 5 Link to comment
precious pupp October 6 Share October 6 I was a teen before I rode a bike with a motor. Moped and Honda 90 were fun, on country roads, not on dirt, and never fast. No helmets back then, though, and never on bicycles. The 60's were a lot different than the present day. 4 Link to comment
lianau October 6 Share October 6 When I learnt to ride a bike I was very good with the riding part, I just didn't understand the braking part yet ... Once I rode down the hill in front of my home and used an apartment block entry area as a brake. It didn't work out too well for me but thankfully my siblings were in the puree stage of eating. We shared meals for a bit. 3 4 1 Link to comment
Salacious Kitty October 6 Share October 6 (edited) My infamous biking story happened when I was about 9 or 10. I lived in the hills, and my friend and I decided to race down two streets that intersected at the bottom of the hill. Let's just say it was a tie. 😂 No harm done, just scraped up a bit. No helmets were worn. Edited October 9 by Salacious Kitty 1 2 Link to comment

My son started with asthma when he was about two. He would just cough and cough until he had to vomit. At two years old he didn’t know any other way to get rid of it. We had some rough times with inhalers when he was around 7-9. It would be a real emergency sometimes. Luckily he grew out of it before high school. Now he has three dogs and a cat and no problems with breathing. 😀 Poor sweet baby. It’s going to be a long road since he’s so young. But hopefully he will also grow out of it someday. Now would be the time for normal people to rethink how many children they want to have. Now that one of them has a health issue, no matter how treatable it is. he’s going to need more attention than the others. I do appreciate Joy’s daughter wearing regular clothes though. She’s at the hospital in a T-shirt and shorts. No dresses or leggings in sight. Edited October 9 by EmeraldGirl 11 Link to comment
CalicoKitty October 9 Share October 9 (edited) Some people handle allergies differently than others. I worked with a mom whose son had breathing issues due to allergies. She went to a great allergist that I recommended, and she was furious that he told her to remove the carpet from his room because carpet holds dust and allergens. NO WAY was she taking the carpet out! She had more concern for the carpet than she did for her son. And she continued to bad-mouth the doctor to anyone who would listen. Meanwhile, the poor child continued to have issues. I wonder if Joy knows anything about how to clean and remove things like carpet that make his issues worse. As we saw on the show, she is not big on hygiene, so I'm guessing her house may have a lot of dust. Being around construction sites doesn't help, either. Poor kid. EmeraldGirl October 9 Share October 9 Now that you mention it, I did see that the rental is all carpet. They had hardwood before, and now they have area rugs laying on top of carpet. Hmm, the timing seems right for him to have this breathing situation right when they move into a new place. 4 4 Link to comment

Gemma Violet October 17 Share October 17 (edited) I watched the whole thing in segments throughout the day--it was 2 1/2 hours total. It kept my interest. A few tidbits: Apparently Austin's family was not as conservative as the Duggars in some ways. He talked about how he spent a lot of time at the Duggars (before the courtship) because he was friends with John David, and how shocked he was when he learned that the Duggars would go swimming in their clothes. He said he started to take his shirt off once and was told to put it back on. He said the Duggar boys were not allowed to wear shorts until later, so swimming was in long jeans and shirts for the boys. Joy says the rules have been loosened up. Austin was asked about the questionnaire he had to fill out pre-courtship. He said some of it made sense like the financial aspect, faith, have you ever been arrested, etc. But some of it was like none-of-your-business, but he could understand why JB did it. Joy said they were never forced to court anyone, and if JB and Michelle made a suggestion regarding a certain boy, the girls could veto it. Joy said the biggest misconception about her family is that their social media is controlled by JB. Austin said Jana's wedding news was leaked. He said someone outside the family posted a photo of an invitation. They spoke on the lack of security, saying that just a couple of days ago, their doorbell rang at 11 pm and it was a pizza delivery person delivering a pizza to 'Joy Anna Duggar,' not 'Joy Forsyth.' It was a prank. The delivery person took it back to the store and they didn't have to pay for it, but Joy said that's happened several times over the years at the big house like a big stack of pizzas delivered that wasn't ordered. Austin doesn't read the bad comments on social media as it makes him angry. Joy tries not to read them but often does. Joy said she feels like she's been acting her whole life, i.e. keep a smile on your face, etc. Joy said the girls have gotten tons of letters from strange guys over the years. Joy even had one from prison and the other girls had several from prison. They were either marriage proposals or pen pal requests. When talking about wearing skirts vs pants, Austin mentioned that Michelle never judged anyone for wearing pants. (He didn't mention JB.) Jinger agreed that her mother never judges people who are different than her and she said she's never heard her mother raise her voice and she knows it's a choice she makes to not do that. Jinger said she raised her voice when Gideon was nine months old, so she marvels at Michelle being able to control it. Joy cried a couple of times talking about her postpartum depression. She said she had a little bit with the first two kids, but it was really bad with Gunner. She went to a Christian counselor. She talked to her doctor about it and the doctor wanted to put her on antidepressants. She turned that down. She said she was depleted in a couple of vitamins and she started taking vitamins prescribed by the doctor. She also started eating right because she wasn't bothering to eat the right things and was just nibbling what the kids would leave. She said she noticed a big change. She said she's doing better, but just the fact that she cried a couple of times in the interview makes me think she's not over the hump completely. Another thing bringing her down during that time had to do with Jinger's book, since she (Joy) also started questioning the way she was raised. Joy says she has moved on from having her faith be fear-based. Their goal is to get some land because Austin was raised on a farm and he wants a similar upbringing for his kids. (You'll recall they are living in a rental home now, I guess while they search for the land.) Joy said they'll probably stay in Arkansas. Joy said they've always said they'd have four, five, or six kids, but right now they're in a good spot and can spend quality time with the kids and they want to effectively raise the kids that they have, so they're taking it one by one. (But then in the same breath, she mentioned that maybe the next one will be twins.) The hosts thanked them for flying to Arizona. I wonder if they went just for the podcast. Maybe they did some touristy things while there. Edited October 17 by Gemma Violet 4 5 10 Link to comment
Gemma Violet October 17 Share October 17 (edited) Another thing I just remembered from the podcast: Joy and Austin discussed the chaperoning. When they were courting and before they were engaged, Austin got into a bad accident and totaled his truck. Joy was driving five minutes ahead of him. He called her and instead of turning around to go see about him, she called JB because there was no chaperone and she didn't want to disrespect JB's rules by being alone with Austin. She continued driving and met up with JB and rode back with him and a brother in their tow truck. She then ran up to Austin, crying, and held onto his arm for 10-15 minutes. I guess JB either was busy with the car and didn't notice that Joy had been holding onto Austin's arm, or he decided to ignore it since it was an emergency. But Joy's brother (she didn't name which one) tattled on her (she didn't use that word), saying, "Pops, Joy has been holding onto Austin's arm this whole time and they're not supposed to even be holding hands." She said JB looked annoyed and said, "Joy, you should probably let go of his arm." The way she said it, I took it as meaning JB was annoyed at his son as opposed to being annoyed at Joy. He probably told her to let go of Austin's arm to be consistent with the rules for Mr. Tattletale's sake. Edited October 17 by Gemma Violet 19 2 Link to comment

mythoughtis October 18 Share October 18 That is so messed up. She was five minutes ahead of him? Were they both coming from somewhere they had been with chaperones? The normal reaction from, family, friends, significant others would be to turn around. His truck was totalled …. Was JB going to think they were going to hop in hers for a make-out session? Was it a single car accident? Was he hurt? Normal parents would have understood. She was at least 16 because she was driving by herself 7 1 Link to comment

She was at least 16 because she was driving by herself They were coming from Austin's family's home. Someone came in his lane in a blind curve and almost hit Austin head-on and he swerved to take the ditch. She was 18, about to turn 19. In the explanation, it seemed to me like she started to say JB said she could turn around, saying that he said, "Hey, I'll head over that way. You can go ahe...I don't know if I went ahead." She couldn't remember what she had done to get there (turned around or came with JB in the wrecker) and Austin told her she met up with JB and came in the wrecker. So when she started to say that JB said, "You can go ahe...," does she mean JB was going to let her go back by herself? Who knows. Edited October 19 by Gemma Violet 3 Link to comment
EmeraldGirl October 29 Share October 29 Did anyone see that Joy colored her hair a dark brown with red roots? Her friend did it for her from a box. When it was all done, Joy was crying, and not in a good way. I’m not sure what that was all about. Or what hubby’s reaction might have been. But if anything, she should have gone lighter. Unlike Jinger who just was not made to be a blonde, I think it would’ve looked fantastic on Joy. Just like Jana seems like she could be a natural blonde. i’m really hoping she goes to get it fixed and goes lighter – at a professional salon. 8 Link to comment

I never thought Jinger looked like any of the others, but Joy looks like her in above picture #2. I’ve noticed it in a few recent posts, ie Jessa looking like Jinger but also Jana. And Jill looking more like Jana. Genetics are funny and obviously people see different things in faces. EmeraldGirl November 7 Share November 7 I have been blonde for most of my life. During Covid I decided to let it grow out. It was just wonderful when it was half-and-half. 😆 it finally all grew out to natural brown and I am only 10% gray. My mother-in-law absolutely hates it. I also had it cut shorter, but she still says it’s too long. She says it should be lighter and grayer. Yeah hello, why would I do that? She even went as far as to say that I look like a hooker! Good grief. Anyway, everyone has an opinion on hair. It should be what you are comfortable with, not what everyone else thinks is good. Still not sure Joy knows what she’s doing though. I don’t get the sudden need for dark hair when that’s not even her natural color. But at least it’s not still down to her butt. It’s definitely an improvement from those days. but I don’t think Austin is as controlling as everyone thinks he is. She seems fine with trying out new things, and he doesn’t really seem to care much. I’m still holding out hope for Jennie to grow up and find her style. Right now she is very plain in the plain skirts. I think she would be a perfect blonde. I hope she experiments with that because I think she really is quite pretty. 6 Link to comment

I think we've all been there after a cut/color change that didn't turn out like we wanted. I know I've ended up in tears a couple of times in my 47 years after a cut turned out not like I envisioned. And let's not even talk about the spiral perm in the 90's that was an epic disaster. I had to have a foot cut off before the perm, it was so long, then it took 99 rollers and 2 bottles of perm solution, it was still that long and thick. It ended up a horrible frizzy mess. So. Many. Tears! For many, many days. I also used boxed dye once, trying to bring out the red in my natural brown hair. It turned out a deep burgundy. I actually really liked it, but not everyone would have been okay with purple hair! Edited November 9 by Fostersmom 6 Link to comment

EmeraldGirl November 10 Share November 10 Oh my goal as a teenager was to have Barbra Streisand’s curly perm. It was the easiest hair ever. I would just wet it and use the pick, oh so 70s. Well, I got to college in the 80s, and all the girls had long hair. So much for my Barbara style. We all want to fit in. Not so sure about the evangelicals though. The rods don’t seem to care what the hell they look like. But I did just hear Jinger say that Jeremy paid for someone to come over and help her do make up. Ha. Remember when she was orange and had a curly perm and raccoon eyes. That was not the look that the preacher wanted. 5 1 1 1 Link to comment

My hair had always been naturally curly but when my son was born, I lost the curl. I asked for a loose perm. She used small rods all over my head. I looked like a brillo pad. It was horrible. I cut my hair short, did deep conditioning every chance I got and never went back to the place (they did give me my money back). It must have scared my hair because a year or so later, the curl came back! As for dye, I do my own. Nothing wrong with playing with color. I'm allergic to hair dye and can only tolerate 9A from Nice and Easy. I haven't had a reaction in years and I'm tempted to do a bit red but I'm afraid. Joy is lucky. She should have fun with it. At her age, I was always a red head. Edited November 11 by libgirl2 8 2 Link to comment
