As Jake struggles with his first case back at the precinct, he encounters Jess Day, who is visiting New York, and enlists her to help him find his suspect. Meanwhile, Holt researches ways to increase office morale and Amy tries to figure out why Rosa keeps taking such long breaks.

(Crossover with New Girl, season 6 episode 4)

Hmm, if this crossover was hoping to attract different viewers to the others shows, it didn't work for me.  All the stuff with the New Girl character (Jess?) kind of brought the episode to a halt for me.  Just didn't find it funny.  Then again, I've never really been a fan of the Deschanel sisters, and Zoey in particular has gotten way too "quirky" for me (I feel like Emily at least can occasionally tone it down.)  I half watch the actual NG episode for the Holt appearance, but even that didn't work for me.

Besides that, not my favorite episode, but it had its moments.  Not surprised that Jake had problems adjusting to everything that change, and especially Boyle prioritizing his son over the job.  Jake being Jake, naturally was full of himself, but I'm glad he saw the error of his ways and apologized for it.  But it was in character, but Jake always seems to automatically get nervous when big changes happen in his life, and I can see why he just wanted to solve a case, and didn't want to accept Boyle has moved on, while he was in witness protection.

Holt failing as the Night Shift hype man was great, but nothing can beat Sassy Terry.  There is just something about seeing Terry Crews dishing out mean girl snark that is delightful; especially since his main target was Holt/Andre Braugher.

Still not a fan of Pimento, but I liked how his absence led to some good Rosa/Amy stuff.  I always wanted the show to explore of this pairing.  They are polar opposite in almost every way, but I can see them also relating to each other on some levels.

RIP, Frost Tips!

The crossover felt forced, and I agree it brought the episode to a halt. Although I will admit I'm curious about Jess now. Why does she talk that way? Is she supposed to be...special, or whatever the term is? Is she intentionally modeled after a character from SNL in the 90s and, if so, why?

I'm also fascinated that they didn't wait for sweeps.

On another note, Holt's party signs were perfection.

The most interesting (I think that's the word I'm looking for) thing about this episode was that WHYY in Philadelphia apparently transmitted this network with the dialogue soundtrack turned off last night. I heard music, sound effects like footsteps, voice-overs (in commercials etc.), but nothing the characters were saying. It finally came back on 10 minutes before New Girl ended. Did anyone else have this experience?

The episode was fine, except for that crossover bit. I don't watch New Girl. Is Zooey Deschanel always that bad an actor? She and Andy Samberg sounded like they were just shouting dialogue at each other. Thankfully it was short.

Didn't care at all for the crossover part, it was essentially pointless, but thankfully brief.

That being said, everything with Holt and his party was made of win and glad to see Jake and Charles reunited. Oh and Holt's joke and his assumption that Terry was too tired to understand humor, because of course that joke was hilarious.

Is it OK to admit that I actually found the crossover gimmick amusing? I also admit that I do watch New Girl, even though the show is now past its prime. The basic concept of the NG characters visiting New York wasn't all that implausible for Sitcomland. I laughed at Hysterical Jess in the car chase scene and also found the bits with Gina, Boyle and his son, and Holt (especially the latter) in New Girl pretty funny. But to each his/her own.

I used to watch New Girl and liked it until, well, I didn't. For me the problem was that the comedy style of the two shows doesn't mesh. Jess and Jake felt like they were from two separate shows, which of course they are. My DVR recording picked up the very beginning of New Girl, and actually it looked pretty funny to me. Jess was funny THERE. She wasn't funny on B99.

OMGosh. Loved the plain type "PARTY" signs all over the place.

Other than the crossover, I really enjoyed this. Jake and Boyle doing their French roleplaying as they recreated the burglary scene was fantastic. I also loved the trip to see the lab tech, who was so desperate for a friend. I don't know how it could happen, but I want that guy as a recurring character. I also loved the temp with all his porn sites open. Jake clicking forever to close all the tabs was great.

Holt, as usual, was excellent.

"I don't care for cheese. I'm a… CURDmudgen."

"Maybe we should just name our favorite sailing knot. I'll start. The Bowline." [nods, nods, nods]

"Why is nobody having a good time? I specifically requested it."

"... the late night NPR programming, PURE GARBAGE!"

"The night shift stinks, stinks like a butt."

And of course John Phillip Sousa is the Skirlix of his day.

The suspect who got away... Have we seen him before?

That's terrible but also makes me laugh so hard and assume that someone at WHYY in Philadelphia just got fired with, "You had one job, [Name]. One job."

Well, this was...not an episode I'll feel compelled to rewatch. That's putting it kindly ;) Like many of you, the best thing about this episode was that it validated my decision not to watch New Girl. The good news is that next week's Halloween episode will probably seem even more awesome when contrasted with this one...I tend to love all of B99's Halloween episodes and, because I have no life at all, am already excited!

Agreed. I didn't mind the cross-over since I watch both shows and it was sort of interesting but it was also odd for the reason you specified. The episode still had some really great bits though, especially with Holt setting up a "hang" room. But - if Holt is Captain again, why are they still on the night shift? Can't he simply reverse the previous (temporary) Captain's order?

As far as cross overs go, this was just kind of...alright. B99 and New Girl might both be sitcoms, but they have pretty different styles of comedy, and seeing them together is just odd. Not awful or anything, and it was kind of funny seeing the characters interact, but just seemed a bit pointless.

I really did like this episode though. The Tips are finally gone! We can truly get back to normal now!

John Phillip Sousa is so clearly the Skirlix of his day! And Holt even went to the trouble of learning what Skirlix is!

Sassy Terry is delightfully bitchy. And Amy awkwardly patting Rosa on the head better be several gifs by now.

It seems I made the right decision in never watching New Girl.

I stopped watching New Girl after the first season or two, and this definitely confirmed that decision for me.  I tried to watch the NG episode to see the B-99 parts, but had to fast-forward through the painful NG parts.

The whole crossover gimmick undermined what would have been a very enjoyable B-99 episode.   I like the frosted tips stuff, all the Jake and Boyle scenes, Amy and Rosa bonding, Captain Holt in general, and even the scene with the detective that switched to day shift.  So looking back, I actually enjoyed most of it I guess, but somehow, the NG intrusion casts a pall on my overall impression of the episode.

It's Skrillex, you curd-mudgeons.

That will never not be funny. Just look directly at my face to see how much I enjoyed that joke. You see, it's funny because ...

BTW, Corgi-Ears is a fantastic name.

The crossover was far less intrusive in Brooklyn 99 than it was in New Girl. Just that random inclusion of Jess, who could have been any driver. Didn't really affect the episode one way or another. On the other hand, there was far more of Brooklyn 99 in the New Girl episode than the other way around, so theoretically, anyone who's a New Girl fan and doesn't watch B99 would have been more irked by it than B99 fans should have been.

And I just had to look up who Skrillex is. Never heard of him. Now, get off my lawn or I'll clobber you with my cane.

That's true.  But I guess I was looking at it more like an hour long episode of B-99, because I wanted to watch all the scene's with the gang... which is why having to put up with all the NG stuff was frustrating. (Even though the second half hour was really NG's episode.)  I feel like the good stuff would have just been in a B-99 episode, without all the random NG stuff stuck in there, which I would have much preferred.  I don't know, maybe this isn't coming out right.

Holt's giant fake smile was breathtaking.

I don't dislike Zoey Deschanel, although I would caution her that her doe-eyed quirky routine will only be cute for a few more years, max. Once she reaches A Certain Age (whatever that actually means), nobody will buy it anymore, if they ever bought it in the first place.

Aha, you fell for their trick, hook line and sinker! Never fall for the crossovers!

I haven't watched this show for a couple of years and this episode didn't make me regret that.  Holt is fucking fantastic though and I'm very sad that he can't just move into the loft on New Girl and Jess can disappear.

I didn't really mind her on B99- it was two minutes and it was over. It was the other show where I was just...she's not for me.

That sucks that the ratings are low. At this point, though, I feel like no tv show will ever really die. Hulu grabbed The Mindy Project, right? Maybe someone would grab this if Fox stupidly and unnecessarily (what else do they have, really) let it go.

They did integrate "Sleepy Hollow" and "Bones" for a two-hour crossover, so it's not like it couldn't be done.

I'm still holding out hope for "Gotham" and "99", with Hugo Strange making clones of the multi-drink Amys, including the yet-unseen Seven Drink Amy.

It's a shame that Holt had the line of the night, and it was a hall-of-famer, an instant classic, but it was during the New Girl half. For those who didn't watch that half and missed it...

"Well, you know what I always say; 'Things happen for a reason. And that reason is random chance.'"

Ha! Classic Holt!

Me too. I love puns, good and bad, though I've never heard the phrase "good pun."

There are so many channels and other options for shows that viewership has to be split up into smaller portions. I'm wondering, though, what the numbers were for the highest rated show in this time slot.

Started off watching New Girl, then this crossover successfully tricked me into checking out Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and it turns out Brooklyn Nine-Nine makes me laugh far more than New Girl ever did.

I don't know if I can go back to New Girl after this.

Ehhh, maybe if I just need something to half-watch while I do other things.
