Jill, Derick & the Kids: Moving On!!

Higgins, I would hope that Derick would eventually get out from under the shadow of the Duggars, but JimBob has already claimed him as one of their own. He has also characterized Jill as his "compliant" daughter. No way are the two of them breaking free of his influence, especially since he provided them with a very nice 1st home. Knowing how controlling JimBob is, I'm confident there are lots of strings attached. I'd be very happy to see Derick assert himself, but I'm afraid it would come at a great cost and he's not, by nature, a boat rocker.

I did notice JB, while they were standing at the yogurt machines, saying, "Now Derrick is on board."  I noticed because the hair on the back of my neck stood up!  I do hope -- for his own family of origins' sake at least -- that he hasn't completely sold his soul to the Duggars, but plenty of men do this when they get married, and not just Fundamentalists.  "A son's a son till he takes a wife..."

My money is on "Rick" after Derick's dad.  He clearly adored him, and I think Jill will understand how meaningful that choice is for Derick.  Actually, as I typed that, I noticed that "Derick" is a form of "Rick."   So, perhaps, they will go with Derick or Eric.  Even Fredrick might be a possibility.  "James" will either be the middle name or reserved for the next boy.

As long as it's not Rick James.  Everytime I hear or read that name it reminds me of the song Super Freak. :p

Does anyone know if Derick's dad was Richard or just Rick?

So Monica Potter from Parenthood tweeted how glad she was to meet Jill and Derick this week and I felt the need to tweet Monica this

.@monicapotter you do know that they are anti-choice and anti-LGBT as is Jill's entire family

Monica's show is pretty progressive and her character's daughter is bisexual and I wish the average person and celebrities like Monica really knew what this family was all about. I blame the Today Show, GMA and People Magazine for making the Duggars seem palatable to the public. TLC needs to cancel this show just like they cancelled Honey Boo Boo because of the things the Duggars espouse on the campaign trail.

I would expect it was probably Richard. That's my husband's name, and he was always "Ricky" growing up. His family still all call him Rick, but he goes by Rich. Which I honestly don't really care for. I wish he'd revert to Rick. At least (other than the occasional elderly guy trying to be chummy) no one ever seems to use "Dick" anymore.

Starfire, you are cracking me up!

If she goes with Richard for baby #1, maybe she will go with Robert for #2 ( I know they said no same first letter, but come on, she's a Duggar). Robert as in Bob, as in Jim Bob.

I can't believe Derick was allowed to sit through Cinderella - it has dancing!  I guess since Sherri Shepherd is now playing the stepmother, the production was "Godly" enough for them.

The first thing I thought after I read this was "Jana is acting on Broadway?!!" :-)

Lol, my brain was in slo mo this morning and it took a cup of coffee before I got what you meant.  I wonder if if Jill thought of Jana as Cinderella while watching.  Probably not.

Link to comment

Someone (maybe someone here?) actually commented on Derick's instagram asking if Cinderella reminds him of Jana? I wonder if he gets it or if he is thinking -- well I guess they're both blonde . . . .

I'm sure it's been asked before but how is Derick getting all this time off? He's a fairly junior level employee who just started 9 months ago, so it's not like he has months of accrued vacation time. Yet he has time to be in NYC? Time to be doing interviews and playing games with People? I don't get it. Don't most young dads save every single day leading up to their child's birth -- so they can take time off for dr's appointments in case of complication and also right after the baby comes? I realize some places have paternity leave now, but it really is only a few weeks max at the most generous employers and Walmart is not known to be generous with benefits so who knows if they even have it.

Why is People so in love with them? On one of the segments the host was SO trying to make them sound normal and mainstream and said something like "every single one of my friends is online dating right now." Um -- dude it's a bit different if you meet on match and then go on dates for months, hold hands, kiss, meet each others' families, maybe have sex and THEN decide to get engage or not. In this case in under 12 months they've gone from meeting to like 3-4 months pregnant. Then the host asks "what are the most important questions to ask when online dating," and they both spout off about values, life goals, Godliness etc. and the host -- realizing this is for a secular audience laughs it off saying -- and what snack they like to eat at the movies, it's important for me to know that about my dates. I get it the Duggars have a different view on dating -- it is about finding the ONE and if the life goals/religious goals match, then what food or activities you like don't matter. Fine. But that isn't exactly the audience that's reading People -- they are more about dating to have fun, go places, and then see if there is enough commonality to marry or not.

Oh my I don't want to laugh but why did he take her to see a story basically about their lives? And I doubt they will put Jana and Cinderella together since it's how she lived her whole life and probably thinks nothing of it.

And the dancing? So defrauding! I can't believe Derick is trying to culture Jill! *insert sarcasm*

Not sure how is managing to get a lot of time off now, but he will qualify for 12 weeks of unpaid leave for the birth of the baby under the Family Medical Leave Act. They can probably afford it with their TLC/People income. His job will be protected and he also will be able to keep his medical insurance under the same terms as if he was working.

I think it's good that people are able to take this leave for the birth or adoption of a child, or a serious family illness, but what if Jill and Derick end up like Michelle and JimBob and have a baby practically every year? I'm sure most employers would not be very happy with having one of their employees taking 3 months off every year.

Jobs aren't as protected as people like to think. I'm a lawyer -- though by no means an employment expert -- and I feel like people take these leave times expecting that they CANNOT be touched. Yes -- your job is protected while you're out. However, it does happen that the next time that there's a bit of housecleaning -- that person who took the FMLA a yr ago is out the door. Now I'm not suggesting that all employers are like that. Many/most do understand why a young dad might need FMLA -- maybe the wife had a c section/health problems; the baby has issues; they have no family around etc. and there was just no choice. BUT in Derick's case, I'd be careful of taking FMLA and then using that time doing People magazine interviews and photo spreads, TLC stuff, doing appearances at churches and Christian radio interviews and all the other stuff they've been doing. That kind of time off is to take care of your family, and I'm fairly sure that being on a press tour isn't the purpose. All it would take would be for 1-2 of his peer level colleagues to get a bit pissed off that their workload is up bc Derick is out for 3 months -- oh but did you see him on GMA this morning; a little bit of bitching happens in front of a supervisor and suddenly management is aware and starting to set a perception that this guy isn't "serious" about a future with Walmart and has other "interests." Let's be honest Arkansas isn't Manhattan where Fortune 500s are a dime a dozen. There are tons of people in Arkansas who'd love to get into a corporate role with Walmart -- they don't need a kid who can't decide whether his professional career is more important or whether TLC/People/his inlaws demands are more important. Again being a long time Walmart exec, I'd hope Cathy would sit him down and lay it out for him pretty clearly -- yeah JB and Jill are great and it's awesome that they're involving you in all this cool TV stuff BUT the TV deals may not last (look at Kate Gosselin) and for that reason he better put his career first and view TV as an "extra," not vice versa.

I agree.  Even if Derick is not out doing interviews during the FMLA leave, if he plans on taking 3 months off plus his regular vacation, he is probably risking his job. Especially if he tries it more than once within a short span of time. He is a tax accountant for Walmart, so I am guessing that during certain months it is critical that he be there. Even if he understands this, I can picture Jill pressuring him to take the entire 3 months off (even with an easy birth) plus all his vacation. She seems to struggle with him being gone to work every day, and we know she wants them to breed like rabbits. I don't think Jill or the rest of the Duggars are concerned about real careers because they are so used to the income from the show, interviews, love offerings, etc. They are out of touch with reality.

He started with Wal-Mart, when, January? February? He's not someone working the store floor but a modest manager/white collar employer, and I've been told by a friend who's husband is pretty high in the food chain that their benefits at that level are quite generous. He likely was given at least two, probably three weeks of vacation at the start and probably it doesn't carry over after this year.

We know he took a week for his honeymoon, and we now know that he's taking some time to go to NYC. I fail to see that he is taking more time off than usual. Everything else that he's done on the show could easily have been done over a weekend, a holiday or after hours.

Give Derrick a chance. He will grow into a more confident husband and father. I don't see him bowing down to Jim Bob forever. He will want the benefit of education for his children. I think he will insist upon it.

I'm super cynical  but I have to say I really like these two, I think they are adorable. There are a lot more daughters for Jim Bob to marry off, he won't be focusing on them forever.

Derick can't use FMLA for TLC & People related things. It is for medically related issues not I need 3 months off for a vacation or to take care of my personal obligations. There are forms from the employer that need to be filled out & signed by a doctor. I've worked in Primary Care & an OB/gyn office & our doctors filled out these forms on a regular basis.

I love that Cathy is front and center in the group picture. And very elegantly attired and accessorized I might add (typed while giving a side eye to the shiny, high-necked monstrosity to its right).

I'll be the first to admit this is rude of me, but can her boobs really be that low or is the dress creating an optical illusion?

True, but as long as the employee qualifies, the doctors have nothing to do with what the employee does on leave. The leave for parents includes time for bonding, so it's not always medically related, as with adoptions.  I haven't read the law in depth, but I doubt that people taking FMLA leave are required to be home with whoever they are taking care of (or bonding with) 24/7, so I tend to doubt that Derick doing an interview would be cause for him to be disqualified from his leave...although it might tick off his employers at Walmart if he's flying places to do them. And who knows, even if they do fly somewhere for an interview, they might bring Pickles along so there wouldn't even be a single day break from the bonding. But they could easily do interviews and filming while at home (which could also tick Walmart off...who knows?!). It will be interesting to see what happens and if leave will be addressed on the show.

It's good to see Cathy and Dan in that picture......I do find it odd that Cathy's husband isn't in it, though.

Derick was already in college when his father died, and he has been in Nepal for the past two years. He may not know his step-father well, and the step-father might not have felt comfortable posing as father of the groom.

Or he may really want to remain out of the Duggar circus.

I'm not so sure Derick will be be using FMLA leave. Do we know when he started to work at Wal-Mart? I googled FMLA & it says the employee has to have worked at the business for at least 12 months & worked at least 1250 hours over the past 12 months.

That family wedding picture is the first time I've seen Michelle's dress in its full length glory. Oh my! I agree with poster about her ta ta's. No wonder someone said she needed a more supportive undergarment when the pictures were first released after the wedding.

His stepfather is always off to the side or in the background reading the paper when he does appear onscreen. I don't think he's having any of this circus.

We don't know that he's taking too much time off, but it looks like it could be headed that way. Yeah -- he's not a store clerk but rather a white collar employee in the Tax department, however I highly doubt he's management. It's his first 9 months in a professional job. So he's been hired at the level that you'd hire any college grad. Maybe that comes with 2-3 weeks of vacation time -- 15 days just isn't that much. I'm sure he took a week for his honeymoon, maybe another 1-2 days like the day before the wedding; maybe took Friday off to be in NYC. Ok -- so 8 days off isn't too much. But I just don't believe that every single interview, People and TLC obligation is ALWAYS done off hours. Maybe some of it is that way, but I can see nothing of Jill or JB saying -- oh we'll schedule it for 3 pm because that's the latest People wants to do this, just take 2 hrs off -- what's the big deal. Taking a few hours off here and there for media and I'm sure for Jill's doctors appointments also adds up.

I'm sure he is diligent and is keeping track to make sure he doesn't go over his allotted 15 days off BUT when you're a junior white collar employee, perception matters. You really don't want to be the person who is saying to their manager every few weeks -- oh I need half day off this Thursday and a full day the next Friday and then 2 hours the following Tuesday. It's just about perception that you have better things to be doing.

I don't see Derrick putting his job in jeopardy any time soon. While I believe he is very excited about being part of the Duggar family, and i think he's drunk a lot of Kool-aid, I also think that any young man who has lost his father early and who had a real scare about losing his mother will value security and making sure his wife and child(ren) are provided for.

Also, if he and Jill are serious about making missions a part of their lives, then that will take some money. These two factors might explain some of the aggression they have both shown in selling every moment of their privacy to the masses.

Unless he is only working part-time, he should be okay for FMLA leave. His Linkedin profile says he started at Walmart in February, so he will have been there for over a year by the due date (end of March) unless the baby is a preemie and then he would qualify with that. If he is working full-time he should have close to 2,000 hours by his anniversary date even if he took a few weeks vacation (40 hours X 50 weeks = 2000).

I agree that silver monstrosity of a dress is hideous! It appears that Michelle's boobs are sagging almost to her waist and she doesn't have a proper bra on.

I can only speak for my FMLA, but while I was allowed to take 12 weeks I had to have 480 hours (sick and vacation combined) to get paid for the entire thing. If I did not have the hours, I could've asked for co workers to donate or just not been paid.

I'm not sure how walmart is regarding personal/sick time. Some places give you certain amount of vacation hours a year. At my job I earn 8 hours a month.

Regardless I would think if Derrick wanted to take a full 12 weeks he would be saving up time as much as possible. Hell just the doctor appointments can deplete those quickly (because doc office always run on time *sarcasm*)

Ugh... I just realized how much longer the intro is going to get because now by marriage she throws the spouses in like she birthed them too... I always kinda giggled that they added "josh is the oldest and he married anna, they have 3 kids" but at the end she still says "I delivered every one of them"

Why does Derick's mother have to post with all those Duggars? Why doesn't she, Derick's brother and Derick with Jill get their own photo for the Dillard-Byrum side of the family? Jill is now a DILLARD, not the other way around... I'd like to see his side of the family photos, from Derick's father's side, does he have uncles, aunts and cousins from his father's side? Those would have been nice to see as representing DERICK....

Why would Derick take Jill to see a child's fairytale stage show? I know they are beautifully done, but there are multiple choices in NYC. Doesn't Prince Charming KISS Cinderella BEFORE they are married?????What does she think about that? And what does Michelle think of those fairytale kisses like Sleeping Beauty? Why doesn't Jill know the words to Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.
