Josh & Anna Smuggar: A Series of Unfortunate Events

Got lost is Josh's instagram and after the first 100 pics or so (he likes taking pictures of random signs) there was a pic of a highway overhead sign that read: Pennsylvania Welcomes You. Made me laugh thinking about what he was doing there!

I read that Anna's family, led by her brother, is going to do an intervention while she is in Florida.  They figure they can convince her to divorce Josh if she is not in the Duggar sphere of influence.  Go Keller siblings!

I didn't find that article credible. It said that Anna's other two brothers supported her (so said the Duggar source who is supposedly "close" to the situation. This person doesn't know that Anna's younger brothers still live at home and are under pretty much 24/7/365 surveillence since Suze left the Gothard fold? However, I totally COULD see Famy being the leak; I doubt she knows much about the dynamics of Anna's family; I doubt she even knows who Gothard is.

You can only file for divorce in the state where you live.

I see. Can Anna move to Florida, live there, and file?  Is Josh considered to be living in rehab, or is it where they had their residence when they were together?  Or where(if) they own a house?  I don't know enough about this, but if Anna is back in FL at least she's away from JB's influence and maybe her bro can talk her into divorcing that pig one way or another.

I think Anna would only have to show up in FL to file for divorce, and the paperwork would be sent to Josh's last known address.  Don't know what would happen after that.  Probably doesn't matter in this case, because I suspect that Anna will have to have another Josh scandle (or two) before she considers divorce.

It's the state of legal residence of the spouse that files the divorce action. State laws vary on how long you have to live there for it to be your legal residence in this context.

ETA In Florida, you have to live there six months before you can file.

Josh has still has 4 months of brainwashing in churchy prison left. If she's not going to divorce Josh, she'd be wise to go back to Tontitown and put the screws on JimBob and extract some sort of commitment for financial support from him, because she won't be allowed to raise the issue when Josh comes back "cured".

Would that this was true, but it sure sounds like the hopeful fantasy of a tabloid "writer." Time will tell.

Such a complicated situation.  If Anna is still a believer, she is probably counting the days til "cured Josh" comes back to her.  My experience is that one doesn't fall out of love the minute the other party does something bad.  It is a process.  And one has to work at it.  Don't know where Anna is in the process especially if she has spent time on the compound.  Do we have anything for sure that she is in Florida?  Or just speculation?

Is he sad panda-ing his way through it?  If he can't call the Teen Mom chicks on their shit, I have little faith in him handling the Duggars.

This will be so far in the rear view mirror by the time Josh is 'recovered' that it won't even matter. He has months left in the hideout.

That depends on how good or bad her story is. If he dressed up hookers to look like his sisters or something, it'll hang around.

I expect he's too boring for that. These people are so ignorant and idiotic that they don't even make interesting villains. They're too one-dimensional even to be twisted. They're just jerks and assholes who are arrogant with no basis. Josh, in particular, I'd peg as just an entitled dumbass who likes to pick on women because he's too limited to see their humanity and because he sees picking on them as his birthright and it makes him feel like a big man. Ditto his "politician"-leading-the-charge-against-teh-gays persona.

More details in the finances thread -- JB purchased the $325,000 house next door (seen in Jessa pool videos) for Josh and Anna.

Maybe he can make the whole compound a long-term rehab facility with mansions, for celebrity offenders.   ... although I suppose the landfill might be a slight problem ...

I wonder what all the people think now who've paid to listen to the many speeches JB and M have given on how they've prepared their kids carefully for going out and living lives on their own as highly responsible Christians.

Because it seems to me when one scans the Duggar family these days, one sees a failure-to-launch situation of epic proportions.

I don't get why Boob purchased the house next door, is it to gift to Josh for sure? Is Boob plotting some kind of comeback for him? Where did Boob get $325,000 from? This just got even weirder.

Why would he do that? Josh and Anna already have a house nearby. Does he want Josh close to keep tabs on him? JB and J'chelle couldn't keep tabs on him when he was living under their roof, why would they be more successful with him next door?

Very good point.  Apparently they don't learn from experience.

Or maybe they have better safeguards now. LIke -- instead of just saying "don't play hide and seek," now they say "don't play hide and seek, tag or touch football."

I understand that, but it was a perfectly nice house, and it was far enough away to give them a little privacy and breathing room -- which I'm sure is "un-Godly."

Interesting, everyone thought Josh's house sale was a zillow mistake. Guess not!

A known family molester living next door to your house full of little girls? Eh, why not.

Buying a house next door screams

"we know our son is a vile piece of crap and Anna got treated horribly. Let's keep them close in a nice house so we can help Anna stay married to our asshole son who we know will never really recover and will need a chaperone 24/7."

What else could it be about?  Trying to take care of Anna and the kids.  Keeping Josh on lock down mode so he can NEVER be left alone again. He will have no cell phone, no computer, no alone trips to Target to pick up a few things and no life.  Jim Bob will hire him to take over toilet cleaning jobs from Ben. That's it. Josh is going to live his life out on lock down mode staying married to Anna.

I don't really care what they do with Josh but by locking down Josh, they have locked down Anna too. Well, maybe that is OK with her.  Who knows?

Josh is almost a 30 year old man. He doesn't need his dad buying him $325,000 houses, especially after he just had a job making the kind of money he did (actually, regardless, you just don't do that). He literally will never learn from his mistakes when his parents treat him like that. Gross.

That's a good point.

Josh is obviously a person with A LOT of mental health problems (to put it nicely). He is not getting adequate treatment if he is in that place where they dont' have licenced therapists...

Is that a safe situation for his daughters?  or even Anna?

He was the "nice husband" who had "nice sex" with Anna. After reading the porn stars accounts of how Josh really liked it...uh, if I were Anna, I would be scared of Josh.

And if he forced Anna to do stuff that she was not OK with or was violent sexually with her etc?  Who would Anna tell?  Who would help her? Anna is very sheltered and has no clue about sexual violence againist women, even when married.

As more and more things come out about Josh...he is more than just a cheater and hypocrite.  He is scary.

And I think Jim Bob knows it.

I agree that adult kids, especially those with families of their own, should be self-supporting.  But this is the Duggars and their warped POV has infantilized their kids.  The kids have grown up in isolation, with minimal contact with the regular world.  The parents have strictly controlled them all of their lives, right down to virtually choosing their mates for them.  Even Josh' 'rehab' is part of their creepy sect and he was undoubtedly sent there with JB and Michelle's approval. The only message he is getting there is that he is a sinner who needs to repent and the way to do that is to do what his godly parents want.  Josh isn't there to be helped, he's there to be re-indoctrinated into the cult.

The purchase of the house just proves what we've known all along: JB and Michelle think of their kids as possessions, like pets, to be trained and controlled.  And the kids have bought into it and don't know any other way.  It's sick and it's sad, but I think the fiasco of the scandal is probably dooming Josh and Anna and their kids to a lifetime under his parents' thumb.  It's what Jesus wants, doncha know?

Holy macaroni - don't know what is fact or fiction from this article.  Could she be living in Florida?  Doesn't she nurse her babies?  I said it before "cured Josh with Anna looking up adoringly at her".  I hope when the pastor tried to put some the blame on her she was able to reject that notion.  They must really believe Josh will be "cured" and be "normal".  Oy.

To me, anyway, this sounds like the kind of thing that could gradually escalate into a truly explosive situation. Up to and including the kind involving guns and accelerants. Even if it doesn't eventually explode, WTF kind of psychological hell of deep and massive revulsion and confusion do they imagine they're setting up for those children? Particularly if the poor kids are, dog please please forbid, home schooled?  If there never are any scorching memoirs from the Duggar Kid One generation, they've pretty much guaranteed here that there will be from Generation Duggar Kid Two, it seems to me.

I really don't think Josh has pathological issues at this point. These 2 issues are totally separate in my mind, and I don't see that the first evolved or escalated into the second. However, I could be wrong, because that happens often enough. And, IMHO, JB & M under reacted the first time and are over reacting this time.

Maybe Anna is moving into the McMansion, and the neighboring home is for Jilly Muffin and the Dillard Family Mission, they seemingly define long term missions as a way of life rather than being any place for an extended period of time. It is easier to maintain an empty property when it is a golf cart ride away, and Jill does seem to be the golden child.

Well, let's hope the McMansion is for Josh and company. Putting them right next to the parental homestead would send some unbelievably horrible messages to all six of them, I think. ....

Of course then we have the wonderful irony of missionaries to impoverished nations having a mansionlike U.S. vacation venue with a pool to live in during their return trips to the U.S. to (I'm sure they hope) film their tv show. Talk about your first-world problems. ... Does make sense that JB and M would want to attach a new real-estate choke chain on Jill and Derick, too, since this seems to be their control-mechanism of choice for the married kids. .... Wonder if JB has the cash to invest in more choke chains if any more of the kids marry any time soon. I would think that repeatedly buying and not flipping would put a bit of a crimp in your supposedly flipping-based real-estate enterprise.

(I wasn't actually thinking that Josh would reoffend in his old way. I was thinking of the anger, boredom, trapped feeling, draining of self respect, lack of any actual therapy or requirement to make his own way as an adult... plus the possible feeling of being trapped and watched, on Anna's part, and the confusion that I think would afflict the kids as they're dimly aware of both their parents kind of being kept people by their grandparents without any agency of their own. .... It just seems extremely messed up to me in all those ways -- quite apart from whatever Josh's proclivities may be -- and therefore a possible boiling cauldron of confusion, powerlessness and discontent on the part of all six members of Josh's young family. And on the part of the parents/in-laws just over the hedge, who have to be very confused about what they actually want from Josh at this point and are likely only to get more confused about that over time as they insist on keeping him as a sort of overgrown prolific puppy in a large doghouse of their purchase. Really really hope the plan is not to keep the Smuggars living next door.)

This is the exact thing JB did before.  Send him off for prayer and construction for a few months and then bring him back and let him go to work at the state capitol with dear old dad.  The intent may have been to keep Josh close and keep and eye on him, but look how well that worked out.  It was interpreted as a reward for Josh and resulted in the porn on campaign computer.  So this time, same treatment, and the reward is a house with pool to keep him close.  That sure worked out well the first time.  He'll sneak off the compound to visit strip clubs again and worse, and treat Anna worse.  What a mess.

I think that Jim Bob and Michelle finally realize how serious and sick Josh's issues are.  They have no clue how to handle this...their only resource is the Bible and Gothard.

So they are going to sit on him and watch his every move.

If Josh can't control himself, Jim Bob will control his action for him.  Jim Bob will keep Josh on the straight and narrow path if it means having someone stay with him 24/7.

Josh is going to be on inmate lockdown.

I bet Jim Bob gets security cameras in every room.  Serious. Jim Bob and Michelle are controling people to begin with.  After this mess and humiliation and truly horrible behavior? Jim Bob probably has the cameras being installed as we type...

Very very scary prospect, as time goes on, to me. How will Josh possibly respond to this? How would anyone, even if they weren't already powder kegs, as he appears to be?

I can't imagine that this is anything but a truly collossal error that could lead to horrors beyond their imagining somewhere down the road. I wish I thought that Josh had the stuff to just walk away from it pretty quickly and go make his own way as a car salesman or yard-maintenance guy somewhere. But unfortunately I kind of doubt he has that much backbone. It's what he should do, though, I think. And it would force Anna to make other plans -- which she should absolutely do. .....

And what happens to their "as many children as God gives us" nonsense living as prisoners-in-a-mansion-on-the-parental-dole? Will they be allowed to go out and buy birth-control devices or surgeries? That's so much against the Duggar grain -- would JB and M, who might be wholly in charge, look the other way on this for once? Or will they just not have sex (If I were Anna, I certainly wouldn't want to ...)?

"Marriage Under Surveillance." How could anyone possibly think that this would be a suitable environment for four young children? Although JB and M might be so stupid that they'd figure the pool could make up for it. This is the stuff of nightmares, if you ask me.
