@Jazzy24 - It's not an origin story.  He's an existing super hero who was in Civil War and already known by Tony Stark.  When this movie opens, the people of New York already know who he is.  He's never shown getting bitten by the radioactive spider and discovering he has powers.

I was talking about Wonder Woman.

One surprising thing about Spidey's move to Marvel is that while Homecoming is doing much better than Amazing Spider-Man 2 domestically, it is lagging behind it in the total worldwide numbers.  You would think it would blow that movie out of the water.

The movie hasn't been released in China and Japan yet though.

I didn't realize that.  I wonder what the holdup is?  This has been out for awhile.

From what I can gather, China usually imposes a blackout on foreign films during peak summer months. It should end sometime this month.

Favorite moment was when Peter left the dance, stole a car, and crashed his way through the streets on the way to Vulture's warehouse. He exclaimed "I've only driven in empty parking lots with Aunt May. This is very different."

My 15 yr old son and I laughed hysterically because that is the only place my son has ever driven...in empty parking lots with me.

I haven't been 15 in years but this movie was so real and I found myself agreeing or thinking something like "yep, I acted just like that or that is what a teenager would do" such a great movie.

This is is honestly the most realistic superhero movie ever IMO.

It really was very relatable. I enjoyed it very much. And my son LOVED it because it played to his age-group.

I thought it was better than all previous 5 movies. I did have some quibbles, like after he crashed the plane at Coney Island there would have been emergency personnel there in 2 minutes flat. But I loved how very New York the whole thing was. Every bodega does have a cat.

In the bus on the way to DC they passed a traffic sign that read Triskelion...something. Anyone catch it?

When I first heard that the movie wasn't released in China I feared the the mixed studio had failed to pay off the proper people to insure that Spider-Man was one of the 34 foreign films allowed.

I don't think the goal of this movie was to make a billion dollars (though I'm sure Marvel and Sony were hopeful), the goal was to rehabilitate the character. And set up the future generation of the MCU.

I think they were successful on both fronts and depending on what they do with Spider-Man in Infinity War the aniticipation for Spider-Man 2 (the third) is going to be massive. I mean if the anticipation for Thor (!) 3 is any indication Marvel can make a second or third movie into an event.

I think the Marvel artist had a different goal than the Disney and Sony suit who were looking for anther billion.

Good point, if they can grow the character it will pay dividends.  Each Captain American movie outperformed its predecessor, same with Thor and Guardians of the Galaxy.  This Thor movie looks like the best of the bunch.  I see no reason why they shouldn't be able to grow Spider-Man like that.

Finally got around to seeing this last night.  I have never read any comic books, so I'm not familiar with the Spider-Man story, but I really enjoyed the movie, and I had a good time watching it.  I've grown tired of the dark, brooding superhero origin stories, so seeing something more colorful and lighthearted was refreshing.  I thought Tom Holland did a great job and captured the essence of the character wonderfully, and I wasn't even on board with him when I heard about his casting, so he really surprised me.  I thought Michael Keaton also did a great job, and I always enjoy seeing him on the screen, no matter what he's doing.  The MJ reveal at the end actually made me a squee a bit, lol.  Thanks to the Raimi movies, I've grown used to seeing Mary Jane/MJ as this bland, soft-spoken, generic love interest, so Zendaya having a personality and doing her own thing is simply awesome, as far as I'm concerned.  From what my comic geek brother has told me, MJ has more spark and personality in the comics, so the character has gotten the shaft, movie-wise.  Good to see they're changing that.  And I thought Zendaya was actually funny and turned out a good performance.

Anyway, yeah, nothing but embarrassing praise over here, lol.  This was the first movie I had seen in a while that made me feel like I was having a good time, and...*blush*...it's actually my very first Marvel movie.  I've only seen parts of the first Iron Man, but that's it.  I know, I know, I'm like 60's version Aunt May, an old crone who doesn't know what's up.  I'll have to check out more of their movies.

Speaking of Aunt May...I liked the change they made with her.  I've always loved Marisa Tomei, and if Aunt May isn't a great-aunt, she would be much younger, so I had no problem with that.  I also liked how Peter didn't have a true love in this movie, just a girl he went to school with and liked and wanted to go out with.  Much more realistic for a fifteen year old than that drippy, twu wuv crap the Raimi movies gave us (haven't seen the Andrew Garfield movies, though I'm betting the Gwen Stacey storyline was similar, despite Emma Stone being a pretty good, vivacious actress).  I didn't mind Tony Stark leaving Peter to fend for himself at all, because I just didn't.  In a narrative sense, it didn't bother me.  I just kind of went along with the ride.

One very minor nitpick is that I would have loved to have seen a little love triangle between Karen, Peter, and Liz, just because I think that would have been funny.  If Karen got jealous for a moment, that would have made me laugh.  But, it's not even a problem for me, it's just a small thing I cooked up in my brain that made me chuckle.  So, yeah, two thumbs up, holy shit, I actually enjoyed going to see a movie, and I never thought that would happen any time, soon.  I loved it.

I finally saw that is movie and I loved it, best spiderman/peter/spiderman movie for me. I loved everyone.

Tom is just perfect for this role. For the first time, Peter felt like a kid to me, especially when he was lucked in the warehouse and when he was buried under the wreckage. Peter crying for help really got to me, I can't remember the last time a character crying for help almost made me cry like that scene did. Tom is a great actor and a star.

Ned was funny and endearing, I love him. I lmao at the "porn" part.

I love Michelle, even though she did not get much screentime, I love what I saw of her character. She is the edgey teenager that is acting like she us too cool to need friends but in reality is lonely. Looks like she likes peter and would love to be friends with both him and Ned. Her scenes were also funny. I can't wait to see her dynamic with peter and Ned in the future. Her snark and Peter's motor-mouth is going to be too entertaining. I am beyond pleased she's going to be our MJ.

I love that aunt May knows Peter's secret, that opens a lot of doors for their relationship moving forward.

Liz was a good love interest for this movie, I hope we can have her back somehow even if for a small screentime.

The villain was perfect. The car scene was one of the most intense scene in the MCU.

Tony and Happy were also used perfectly.

And oh my god, pepper/Tony are back! they are the best cannon ship in the MCU. I was mad when they broke up in CA:CW.

One of the best thing about this movie was how the director was able to set homecoming in the MCU without it appearing to be shoehorned, everything fit perfectly. Good job all-around.

I can't wait for the second movie, this is the funniest spiderman movie and yet it has a lot of heart and was so emotional.

Bring in Thor ragnorak.

This movie is making 300 domestic and 800 WW, that's pretty good considering its a second reboot and the well recieved competitions it had.

I'm not that surprised by the drop-off. I enjoyed the movie, particularly Holland's performance, but didn't feel compelled to go see it again. (By contrast I saw Wonder Woman 5 times in the theater, and only backed off when it occurred to me I could get the blu-ray in a few months for the cost of another trip to the theater.)

Huh. It's the opposite for me. I have seen Homecoming twice, but Wonder Woman only one. The latter was to sad for me to watch a second time.

Same for me. I've only seen Homecoming once, but I'd probably see it again. Although for me I just don't feel the need to watch WW again.

Wonder Woman has been surprisingly successful though.  I don't know if it's just that it's an overlooked well known character, or if the females really wanted their own superhero movie.  Guess we'll find out about the latter when the Captain Marvel movie comes out.

Gender politics could be an issue, as racial politics will be part of the Black Panther reviews and box office. A Black Panther comic book movie already been seen as Black People Homework from the day production started. There can only be one "first" and the film of one of many "Captain Marvels" from different comic book companies and different characters at Marvel before Captain Carol Danvers is not in the same league as the one and only Wonder Woman. So I doubt if any Marvel/Disney female lead gets the same gender push that might have inflated the DC/Warner Wonder Woman movie.

I'm not sure how much inflation happened - I"m sure quite a few people also didn't see the movie because it has a female lead, just as many people did see it because it was a female lead (and only because it was a female lead). One of them being me.

As mentioned above again. not sure Captain Marvel will be that good a gauge, because not many people know.

Bringing it back on topic, I'm definitely hearing a lot of Marvel fatigue and do think it is a factor in Spiderman not doing as well as it should. (And I'm really annoyed by the people asking for lasting deaths in the MCU and using it as an excuse to swear off. Like, leave your emotionally stunted selves in some other franchise and allow us poor water taps at least one free of pointless death, despair and gloom please).

I agree.  I enjoyed Wonder Woman, but it wasn't exactly a fun movie, and if I'm going to shell out money to see a movie in the theater these days, I want it to be fun.  That's just me.

Really, Marvel's movies have been performing at a pretty steady rate if you discount the big bump they got around the time of the first Avengers movie.  So I'm not sure how much Marvel fatigue is there.  The big movies (Avengers 2, Civil War) have been in the $400 million and over range, the C list characters have been around $150 million, and the more well known solo movies have been around $250-350 million.  Spider-Man is really the one that seems to me to be under performing, considering the popularity of the character, and how well this version has been received critically.  Maybe it's just a case of too many Spider-Man movies (as someone suggested), but I think Marvel should have overcome that.  Really, it's going to hit $300 million, so it's not that bad.

I also really thought Guardians of the Galaxy 2 would bring in $400 million domestic, but it stalled just short.  Came close though.  The real test of whether or not there is Marvel fatigue is Infinity War.

I don't get the appeal of this movie. I've seen bits and pieces and read the plot and it seems like the same old superhero origins story namely a Captain America First Avengers meets Thor 1 movie.

But  to each their own.

Also so sorry to take up the Spidey thread with WW talk.

If you're just going by descriptions and clips you aren't getting the sum of the parts. WW isn't a perfect movie, due to the lame CGI near the end, but it's darn close.  It had heavy subject matter, but  I'd argue it was so deftly done that it was uplifting and not heavy at all.

Just on paper, I'm not sure Homecoming sounds that stellar either. So much of this movie could have been trite if badly done. It's the execution that made this movie so great, because it was witty and touching, instead of trite.

I'd found that off-putting in the early marketing too (am I the only one who is very much over Tony's manpain and RDJ delivering one glib comment after another with the most bored, insincere affect he can muster?), but was determined to see it because Holland was so good in Cap3. Glad I did!

Man, I could've sworn I posted a comment back on opening weekend. Anyway, I love this movie! Love! It's my favorite of the Spider-Man movies. It's been a while since I've seen the Tobey Maguire ones, of which I really only l liked the 1st one. I just saw the Andrew Garfield one a few months ago on a flight back home. I really liked and wondered why it didn't do as well.

As I said, this one is my favorite. No backstory. Though I didn't mind it in the AG version, it's nice they did away with it. We know. Unless you're going to put a twist on it, don't bother. Tom Holland was perfectly cast as someone that could believably, no question, pull off what it means to be 15 and with this incredible life. He looked the part and really relayed that giddiness, fear, wanting to be all grown, etc that comes with being a 15 yo.

The writing was good, the acting was good. I've always liked Marisa Tomei and it's good to see her working. I like this new May. I saw a couple article titles that seemed to be dismayed at the sexing up of Aunt May or however they put it. I meant to read the articles but didn't get around to it. If the point is, May doesn't need to be younger or sexed up or something to that effect, I'm like, I don't see why she can't be younger. I like this dynamic they have now. I think it opens up possibilities that I didn't see in the other versions with an older Aunt. Maybe that's just my wishful thinking for the sequels. Also, I think saying this new May is sexed up is an exaggeration.

One of my favorite parts of this movie was the diversity - Liz, Ned, Flash, MJ, the other kids on the debate team, Coach, the principal, Liz's mom, the teacher who caught Ned in the computer lab, hell the other kids just walking down the hall. And the little touches the movie gave to diversity in its set - the pictures on the wall in detention and the picture of the principal's father or grandfather in his military uniform.

I'm excited for the sequel.

Marissa Tomei was more sexed up in Captain America Civil War with a then single Tony Stark really noticing her and perhaps part of the audience remembering her previous big role as the aging stripper in The Wrestler. Many think she was actually desexualized in Homecoming by the high waistband pants and the unfashionable eyeglass frames that wardrobe department gave her.

The dismay comes from Spider-Man 1.0 and even the original trilogy of Sony Spider-Man movies where she was drawn as more of a great aunt then a parent aged aunt. I was dismayed at first when Sally Field took the role  for the next two movies even at a great aunt age to a young Peter she seemed to sexy when compared to my memories of the 1960s comics and cartoons. But then the world has changed in the last decade or so first it was 40 something now the 50 something actress getting roles that was once a 30 something Mary Tyler Moore and Rhoda in being the main sexual interest of adult characters. And now if 50 year old love interest actress is playing her age there is no story possibility of the accidental pregnancy.

Honestly, thank God for that.  We've seen that done twice in the last 15 years, once barely 5 years ago.  We didn't need to see it again.  We didn't need to see Uncle Ben die, either.  We know that part of the story.  I like that we weren't thrown so completely into the Spider universe.  We've now met Flash and Betty Brant and Aunt May.  We've even met M. J. after a fashion.  I like that the girl he really liked wasn't M. J. or Gwen Stacy.  I like that J. Jonah Jameson and the Daily Bugle aren't a thing yet.  I like that neither are the Osbornes.  Most of all I like that Spiderman is being allowed to grow more naturally into Spiderman and didn't start out a super-duper hero right from the get-go.  That he's had to grow and still has room to grow.

Wish they would have had some callback to the fact that this is the first time they've had a successful Spiderman movie with minimal romantic drama.  And hey, you can't blame Peter for the destruction of Liz's family -- her dad made his choice.

Watched this last night finally. It was super fun I like that they made it a legitimate teen comedy first and a super hero movie second. I remember reading reprints of those early Lee/Ditko Spider-Man stories that were reprinted in the Essential books and how Peter's life was always more interesting than whatever villain he was fighting, which I am pretty sure Stan Lee was aware of.

Liked the use of Chitauri technology. It reminded me of the Iten 47 one shot on the Avengers blue ray.

Also I'm really wondering what Pepper meant when she said she had something for the press conference after Peter bailed, since she didn't seem too interested in the proposal in front of the press.

Rewatching this for the first time, it's funny to recognize how Michelle is kind of low-key stalking Peter throughout the film.

While rewatching the movie, I got the feeling that MCU MJ may have figured out who Spider-Man is. (Just like her comic book counterpart).

There's a brief gag in one of the deleted scenes that may allude to that, though I suspect they'll probably leave that to be something that actually plays out in the narrative of the next film.
