Ayo Edebiri is hosting the February 3rd episode, with JLo as musical guest.

Ayo has had a big few years, winning many awards for her role in "The Bear," and was in a number of films released last year. She has a comedy background as well.

SNL is so clearly trying to get the younger viewers with some of these hosts. I have my doubts about whether younger viewers will ever care about the show - although there are always exceptions - but if Ayo is as good as I've repeatedly heard she is, hopefully the show will give her a good night.

I've seen some fan speculation that Ben Affleck will pop up...I also have my doubts there, but we'll see.

They announced the first two shows of March. Sydney Sweeney/Kacey Musgraves on the 2nd, and Josh Brolin/Ariana Grande on the 9th.

This will be Brolin's third episode...his last was in 2012. His first episode was (I'm not sure if it still is) one of the highest-rated episode in the show's history.

I guess Ariana managed to wait Pete Davidson out for her return.

'Maya Rudolph, Jake Gyllenhaal to Host Final Season 49 Episodes'

How unusual (or not) is it to have so many former cast members host in a season?

It might be a result of the strike, all the stars are now back to work at the same time on their projects. Lorne probably had to call in a few favors to find a few uncommitted stars to host.

I think it's a combination of that & preference.  I don't recall a strike in the latter part of the 90s; Lorne might've preferred to have well-known people host around that time.

To be specific 35% of the hosts in Season 22 were previous cast members; five consecutive shows featured former repertory players.  Probably not a common occurrence, and until proven otherwise, probably something that will not happen again.

On the other hand, the 50th annual season would be the best opportunity for a repeat of it.  Nonetheless, it's nice to see former players return to host.  Especially when it gets to the point where one loses track upon their fifth time hosting

Through the election is likely, but pulling an Alec Baldwin is an open question.  I think it's safe to say they're not going to use dark makeup on a white cast member (like Jesse Jackson being played by Darrell Hammond), so it's either Ego or Punkie.  I'm not sure either could do a good job (insert joke about how that hasn't stopped them before).   If Maya isn't available/interested, they may decide to never show her.  There have been stretches where the president (Bush and Obama in particular) never showed up.

Well, since Maya Rudolph is biracial (her mother, Minnie Riperton, was African American and her father, Marc Rudolph, is white), I can see her playing Kamala Harris.

Yes, but I think it would be nice for the show to use cast members rather than guests. Alec Baldwin was brought in regularly to be Trump, so it's certainly doable. Maya is always great. I was just thinking that Ego, who is also great, might be able to do Kamala.

I never thought Maya's Kamala was any good. She just came across as a generic character, and didn't capture any of Harris's signature qualities.

They don't need Baldwin for Trump. they have in-house options.

I would rather see rare guest appearances by Maya and Alec Baldwin/JAJ doing Harris and Trump because, frankly, I wouldn't want to see either one shown on a regular basis.  When I watch SNL, I just want to laugh, and I've had enough of politics.

I understand the reasoning, but I think I'm over Maya at this point.

That said, I'm more concerned about the writers at this point. They haven't exactly had the strongest run in regards to political sketches, and I'm not sure Harris gives them all that much to work with.

I was reading an article on who should play Tim Walz. They proposed Lewis Black, Paul Giamatti, James Austin Johnson, Danny DeVito, and Steve Martin. I don't think Lewis Black has the right persona. I also vote against JAJ and DeVito.

For me, Steve Martin can do no wrong. He's likable and funny. I also think Giamatti would be a great pick.

Jack Black would be a great choice, if he'd shave his beard.

I wish they would just use the cast and stop with all the guest star nonsense. if they can't hire competent people for the ensemble, no celebrity guest is going to save the show. Decent writers and decent cast is all they need. Gimmicks don't make the show more watchable.

That's exactly what it is

What I meant was, it isn't merely an impersonation. Someone can do fantastic impersonations of famous people, but they also need to be funny. In Walz case, they need to be funny and likable, cuddly even. I had suggested Jack Black, but I don't think he has the cuddly aspect.

I don't think there's a current cast member who fits the bill. I'm sorry Steve Martin passed because although he might not be able to do the impression, he is funny and likable.

I'll have to think about other possibilities.

I think John Goodman could nail it.

I don't think Steve Martin is cuddly.

I feel like Walz is a type, but weirdly I can't think of who is his type who could play the role.

But I think a good actor can do it. We shouldn't think it needs to be a typecasting situation. A competent actor doesn't have to play someone who's the same as they are.

Also, SNL has never really gone for accuracy in impressions.

I think the writing is what will make or break whether it's funny or just stupid.

The best suggestions I've heard for Walz are Richard Kind and Tom Arnold. I'm not up on the current cast. I agree they should look there first, but the physical aspect is really important for this one. No one will nail it who can't pull off dad bod with that huge, goofy grin (complimentary).

The more I think about John Goodman, the more I think he'd be perfect. It's a little hard for me to get used to his new look after he lost so much weight, but I still like him best for this.

I like Richard Kind in scripted stuff, but I saw him on John Mulaney's recent show, and I thought he kinda bombed. I don't know if he was ad-libbing or if the writing wasn't that funny, but either way I was cringing when he was on.

Tom Arnold resembles Walz, but I haven't seen him in anything for along time, so I don't know.
