Figure Skating

Is the appeal of Trusova the jumps, when she managed to perform them? I do not understand the lauding. Her programs are always kind of unappealing, and she reminds me of Plushenko - jump, jump, jump, wave hands around, jump. Thinking about the majority of the Russian ladies annoys me because of the Eteri of it all, but I do enjoy watching Shcherbakova and Kosternaia. I guess I need to look up Valieva’s latest programs because she bored me on the Grand Prix. A true shame about Liza not rising to the occasion.

Here's the story.  In a nutshell, he went to visit his family for Christmas over a week ago, he just turned 18; his parents have 7 kids, 4 of them still minors.  He was supposed to return to continue training last Sunday but didn't and has not been heard from since.  The police went to his parents' home at least twice to check on his well being and were turned away and told to get a warrant.

His parents have expressed objections to his 'life choices' since he turned 18 according to his partner and she believes he is being held against his will at their home in Colorado.  His partner says she is concerned that he could be physically and emotionally abused by the parents.

His partner feels he is being held against his will which is why she asked the police to check on him.

That "life choices" bit is worrisome. I think we all know the code here. His parents are Russian immigrants who may still have more of the Old Country in them than they would admit.

That does not sound like a safe situation.  I wonder about his siblings who are over 18 - do they live at home and are they free to contact “outsiders”?

Yes, having traveled in Russia where even young people working in the tourist industry with a wide variety of people are openly virulently homophobic, my mind went there, too.  The attitude toward those in same sex relationships is downright hostile.

@peachmangosteen, USA is airing everything except Men's and Women's free skates (NBC will cover those).

I saw the listing, but it didn't say what program would be shown.  That would be great--I think the US men's programs will be a lot more interesting than the women's!

She may be flying solo on this. Baby’s last name is Kwan and in her paragraph, Michelle doesn’t mention a father at all. The second picture on the Insta post (when you swipe on the baby’s pic) is a progression of Michelle’s tummy through the months. However she’s doing it, she kept it quiet. And baby’s got some CHEEKS!! Too cute.

Baby Kalista is SO cute. I'm so happy for Michelle. She's wanted this for a long time and her baby couldn't ask for a more loving home and family.

I wonder how this COVID surge is going to impact the Olympic team selection process. I wouldn't be surprised to see more withdrawals before the end of the competition.

I think a lot of athletes are going to have their Olympic dreams crushed by COVID. I’m worried about when they get to the Olympics. How heartbreaking to get a positive test when you’re already there ready to compete, but it’s going to happen for a lot of people.

I’ve always assumed Alexa and Brandon were a lock, and the battle would be for the second spot. Now who knows! I think they can successfully petition to get on the team if everyone else is sloppy at Nationals. But if Calalang/Johnson and Cain/Leduc nail it, they deserve to go.

I hope Nationals is not a super spreader event.

As noted above, it sounds like a solo project.  In her post, Michelle thanks her family and friends, no mention of a partner.  She also thanks her fertility specialist and gives encouragement to other women needing help with conception.  She's 41 now (How can that be?  She was just 15!) and may have decided it was now or never.

She divorced her husband 4 or 5 years ago.

Good for her for keeping her private life private.

Watching Pairs at Nationals. I feel bad for Nathan Bartholomay. He just can't find a strong partner. At least he went to the O's once but he's still out there, competing (with what seems to be a new partner every few years).

I do feel bad for Alexa and Brandon. This will definitely make the pairs competition this week even more interesting, and I do agree with the earlier post that if Ashley/Tim and Jessica/Brian do well in Nashville, they should be selected to go to Beijing. None of the top pairs could expect something better than a top 10 finish, so the selection committee could really pick any 2 of the top 4 U.S. teams and be able to make a reasonable case.

I know Audrey and Misha don’t have the same polish or presentation as the other U.S. teams yet, but they’ve been consistent and did well at Golden Spin last month. If they don’t end up getting selected for the Olympic team, I could see them medaling at 4CC (assuming 4CC doesn’t get canceled).

Depending on whether K/F's petition is successful, L/M could potentially be named as Olympic alternates. I wouldn't send them to 4CC.

Interesting thanks! I've gone to sporting events masks were required, but the broadcast team where not wearing masks.

They’ll be thinking about the overall team medal when they select which pairs they’ll send. Alexa has the most international experience, but Cain and DeLuc did just as well in the GP circuit this season.

Very proud of Gracie. I was kind of dreading it, tbh, because she had that same look skating onto the ice she's had the last few times at Nationals when she didn't do very well. But she nailed it tonight.
