Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"

Message added by Mod-Tigerkatze,

Your Pet Peeves are your Pet Peeves and you're welcome to express them here. However, that does not mean that you can use this topic to go after your fellow posters; being annoyed by something they say or do is not a Pet Peeve.

If there's something you need clarification on, please remember: it's always best to address a fellow poster directly; don't talk about what they said, talk to them. Politely, of course! Everyone is entitled to their opinion and should be treated with respect. (If need be, check out the how to have healthy debates guidelines for more).

While we're happy to grant the leniency that was requested about allowing discussions to go beyond Pet Peeves, please keep in mind that this is still the Pet Peeves topic. Non-pet peeves discussions should be kept brief, be related to a pet peeve and if a fellow poster suggests the discussion may be taken to Chit Chat or otherwise tries to course-correct the topic, we ask that you don't dismiss them. They may have a point.

I live on Taza’s Wicked Dark as well as more local brands like ChocoSol which tend to use simple ingredients (I’m trying to avoid over processed additives).  I’m also the type who can make an entire chocolate bar last two weeks.

Peeve:

Two words that I constantly screw up and often inadvertently interchange, "color" and "collar".  When spoken, they sound too similar.

I have often spelled "collar" as "color", even though I have meant it as "collar".  Not a good thing.

Ah! Those darn muscle-memory mistakes that get hard-coded into our brains and bodies.
There's probably a method for retraining it, but I don't know one that works.

At the risk of pissing off the dog owners that follow this forum, I have a dog-related peeve to vent.

Yesterday morning, I was at a small local coffeehouse—an establishment with beverages and food—for about 30 minutes. In that time, three different couples/families brought in their dogs. The first dog was about mid-thigh height, maybe a large labradoodle. The second dog was maybe a goldendoodle, and was being carried under its owner's arm—above counter height. As I was leaving, the third dog, who I didn't get a good look at, was standing on its hind legs with its paws on the counter. Where my apple fritter had been 30 minutes earlier.

I get that animals are into everything—just ask my cat who thinks we don't see her walking on the countertop under dark of night. But here's the thing: each of the dogs were with more than one person, which means that one of those people could've stayed outside with their dog while the other(s) went in and ordered.

I am a dog lover, and that would piss me off.  I'm not a fan of animals on the furniture, and definitely not of anybody's feet on food surfaces.

I don't personally care about dog paws on the counter, but because many people do and, fundamentally, it's a commercial establishment rather than my home, if I had a dog and chose to take her into an eatery, I would make sure she was on the ground at my side at all times so as not to disturb anyone.  And if I had someone with me, I'd have them wait outside with the dog while I went in to get our goodies.

As a cat person, taking my pet with me places is generally not something that happens.  But one year I took my cat Maddie with me when I joined my parents in their motorhome for our annual Thanksgiving camping trip.  She was rather chill in general - thus taking her with me (my other cat had died the year before, and I thought she'd be happier with us than home alone other than my friend's daily visits) - but I figured she'd prefer coming with me to the check-in rather than being left in the car.  So I carried her up there, but didn't just plop her down on the counter, I put her (she was on a leash) on the ground so I had my hands free and anyone with allergies would not have her shoved into their space.  The two employees gushed over her and asked if she'd let them pet her (she would), so only then did I put her up on the counter.  I didn't just impose that on someone.

Like parents who think everyone should like their child and be cool with her/him all up in their business, pet owners who have a similar mindset are inconsiderate.

My allegiance is to Tayto cheese and onion crisps and Butlers chocs, but yes.  The bits I *really* want like black pudding aren’t things I can bring in a suitcase.

And it’s not just Cadbury, loads of things with the same “branding” taste completely different 😢.  The disappointment of that first bite is awful!

There was also a toddler that was allowed to roll around on the floor.

My late cat Isadora was one of the calmest and friendliest cats ever. I took her on a few trips with me to pet-friendly destinations. When she was a kitten, I brought her with me to the beach to be with my family. I took her to Charleston once when I went alone. My sister brought her late cat when we went to Edisto Island (over 20 years ago now). The girls were best friends after one day of hissing at each other.

On every occasion, she stayed in the carrier until we were safely at our destination. I tried leash-training her, but that was a huge fail.

I have been ranting about Bad Dog Owners many of whom seem to have become first-time dog owners during the pandemic. As predicted by my veterinary specialist friend early in the pandemic when they were swamped with all of these new first-time dog owners, many of these dogs are now being "re-homed." I think this might be a good thing, as the Bad Dog Owners do not seem to be maturing into Good Dog Owners.

Related:
I'm not sure, but it seems that there might be fewer jaywalkers, jaywalking runners, clueless cyclists, and crazy pandemic drivers on the roads as of late. Although they aren't "re-homing" anything, maybe the less serious walkers, runners, and cyclists have gone back to what they used to do for recreation, and the crazy drivers are just spending less time driving--or maybe they got therapy.

I set the DVR to record something. It does not do so. I start the “set to record” process all over again, only to get the message “recording already set.” Thanks, Optimum—you rock, as usual (and you’re SOOOOOO welcome for the $260 bill I sent you earlier this week!).

I don't know about DVRs associated with commercial services, but my old DVR used to give me fits until I realized sometimes I was not paying attention to the a.m. and p.m. settings for the times.

I set it the same way I set anything else -- meaning it's not me, its the DVR. When I look in up in the guide grid thing, it doesn't indicate that it's set to record. But if I click "record," that's when I see the "you already scheduled this thing" message. But it's not showing up in the "scheduled" list, so I can't delete it from there and try again.

There's an "until I erase" setting,* so number of episodes saved is not an issue (and this was the first episode of this show anyway, so it wouldn't have been that) and there is no "am" or "pm" setting; it just goes by "new only," "this time slot," or "all." (Do not accidentally pick "all," haha!)

*And THIS feature is all funky for just one show I record; it will only save 5 at a time of it, even though it is set exactly the same way as everything else is. So, this is an equipment issue --  no surprise, considering it's Optimum. Just peevey.

I also have Optimum, and they recently changed their interface on the phone app, and when I schedule recordings they sometimes don't happen.  It's a good thing it doesn't really matter--you can always catch these things on demand and on rerun, but still . . . my viewing of Real Housewives shows is important!

You don't have other things scheduled at the same time?  Like trying to do three at once or something?  In that case you have to prioritize and pick.

My DirecTV DVR does weird things though.  Can't find the recorded shows sometimes until I play around with the menus.  I hate DirecTV but only way to get NFL Sunday ticket.

Link to comment

No, we don't have to prioritize and pick; we can record up to 16 things at once. Not that I have ever needed to -- and not that I necessarily believe Optimum when they say so, either. Believe me, this is not user error. I'm doing nothing any differently than I have before. It's just some funky nonsense. Maybe something was amiss with Optimum at the exact moment I tried to set the recording. That wouldn't surprise me a bit!

But I am glad you posted this anyway -- it's a reminder to me to see if I can find this on demand later! TY!

I know some mean it or at least mean well, but it's a pet peeve when the same guys who drool over super enhanced women say they hate makeup, breast implants are gross, natural look for the win. I know one in particular who will be quite cruel about different natural women's appearances and then also say looks don't matter, men don't care about boob or butt size or cellulite, women only get stuff done to compete with other women.

The same thing about men who say they want a woman who will eat burgers and drink beer with them, but wouldn't date a woman who's even a few pounds overweight. I don't believe for a second that those comments are "well-meaning," they are toxic and controlling.

Toxic and controlling to (a) have such specific requirements about how a woman should behave, and (b) having additional expectations that are conflicting. As I said in my original post, my peeve is men who say that they want to date a woman who eats like them, but who wouldn't date overweight women. For most women, it's impossible to eat such a high-calorie diet and stay at a healthy weight. Just like it's impossible for most women to look the way men want them to look without using makeup, hair products, etc.

Oh, I am with you on the original peeve! But I don’t see anything wrong with someone simply expressing that they’d prefer to be with someone who likes X and Y over A and B. I have “requirements” and I have done that (I prefer my BF’s “style” to guys who like tons of sports or whatever). It’s only controlling if they are already with someone who likes A & B and they try to change it. Like I said, I may have misread the point being made. But I also feel like the “burger and beer” thing is a metaphor for “not fancy-pants.”

As far as makeup, haha—they probably have no idea that “no makeup” is not the same as “light makeup”!

It's the impossible standards that are toxic and controlling. "Look pretty, but don't look like you've put any effort into it." "Eat junk food with me whenever I want, but don't gain any weight." etc.

The standards, yes -- but only if they are there. But I don't see a comment like "I want a chick who likes cheap burger/beer dates"* as toxic by itself or assume that it automatically has a "but she better stay skinny" attached to it (even though plenty of women can do that).

*Again, I would take that as "instead of upscale/expensive/formal dates" as opposed to "instead of healthy food dates." But even if the latter was the case, I still wouldn't assume they were also making demands about weight.

My sister is both skinny and eats a lot, but she is bulimic and anorexic. Back in the late 70s, her wedding gown and hairstyle were based on Princess Di’s.
So, yeah, frequently if a tiny woman can eat burgers while swilling beer, there are unhealthy behaviors (or medical conditions) and someone who is in a sincere relationship with her would not celebrate that.

That’s where my confusion started—with the post that said the comment itself (re. preferring a woman who liked those things) was toxic. I am in full agreement that the complete mindset with extra stipulations is an issue and that kind of guy can suck it (though if that’s what he dreams of, let him have at it—eating his precious burgers all by his damn self for eternity).

Also, that kind of guy clearly has a very limited knowledge of lady bodies anyway, hahahahaa!

I once offered someone my earbuds because their phone was so loud.  As in, "I have some earbuds I'm not using.  Do you want them?"  I didn't overtly complain or give the person reason to get annoyed or upset with me, but I did get my point across, and they turned down both the offer of earbuds and the volume on their phone.  Passive-aggressiveness for the win!

Since the dumb son of a bitch obviously can't raise a dog right, I hope he doesn't have kids.

I am really getting tired of people not having control over their pets.  I keep my mouth shut, because the last time I spouted off years ago, a dude threatened me.   And I only spouted off, because that dog went after me multiple times over multiple days over multiple weeks, and the owners knew the dog was a problem, and yet, I am the bad guy for not wanting to put up with it any longer.

I am very empathetically sorry for you having to go through all of that, @icemiser69, but I also derived a little bit of satisfaction while reading of your terrible encounter(s) from just knowing I am not the only one.
And I have been made to feel that I am the only one when a Bad dog Owner stands by while her dogs are barking and growling at me as I stand frozen in place and the owner says, 'I've never seen them act that way before."

Yeah. Right. </sarcasm>

There was a time when cell phones were supposed to be turned off when in a doctor's waiting room.  Apparently it is no longer enforced.

“enforced” is the key word.
The receptionist is not paid or trained to enforce anything other than the signing of HIPAA forms.
However, I’m guessing if I asked the receptionist to ask the loud-talking cellphone user to observe the “no cellphone” sign rule, the receptionist might ask the loud talker to do so.

Fortunately wait times in most doctor offices have decreased in the last 20 years or so.
Unfortunately, this is because appointments are scheduled to last only 10 minutes, and many doctors stick to that schedule, even when more time might result in a better patient outcome.

Wow. I am seriously curious as to whether the doctor(s) know about the specific language of the sign?
And next time you are there, please tell us if it is still there with the same language.

I was very relieved when my boss at the college library where I worked announced that we would no longer forbid eating in the library. There was a café in the library and a large area of tables and chairs across from it. Before we abolished the "no food or drink in the library" signs and policy, I would occasionally do my part by quietly strolling up to students surrounded by large amounts of food trash and very quietly share with them that we had just one custodian for the large, 3-story building, and that he was a senior citizen, and ask: Did they really want their grandfather to have to clean up after them? They would look sheepish and at least get rid of the trash.
I did not share with them that this one custodian was a South Vietnamese immigrant who had been tortured during the war and had limited use of his shoulders like the late John McCain.

Eventually the college hired a cleaning service for the campus, but prior to that, my Master of Library Science degree duties included cleaning tables.
Interestingly: One student begged me for a job in the computer lab mid-semester after I/we had done all the hiring. I told her if she was willing to come in at 8am and clean the tables in the 24 hour lab, she could have a job. She did. Next semester I was able to give her hours taking care of the printers and dealing with tech issues.  Several years later she came by to visit after graduation and told me she was working at Google.

He is aware. I honestly don’t have a problem with it at all.

Have you seen it enforced? Or is it maybe just an effective deterrent?

About 2 months ago I was in a medical office waiting room and had trouble communicating with the staff because:

  • I have loud tinnitus that makes it hard for me to hear only if there is other background noise.
  • The staff member speaking to me was behind plexiglass and masked (of course, and thank you).
  • There was someone in the small waiting room talking very loudly into a cell phone.

I said to the staff member that I have trouble hearing when there is background noise and gestured toward the loud person. The staff person just repeated herself enough times until I got the words between the other person's conversation.

Maybe I needed a t-shirt with your avatar printed on it, @ginger90.

But, for all I know, the noisy person may have been giving instructions to her partially deaf auntie with Alzheimer's.🤷‍♀️

Just in case I'm not the only person in the free world who didn't know -

ASMR (autonomous sensory meridian response) is a physical sensation characterised by a pleasurable tingling that typically begins in the head and scalp. It is commonly triggered by soft or accented voices, personal attention, ambient sounds or watching people work silently, among others. Also referred to colloquially as "head tingles".
