I didn't know Sam Rockwell was going to be on the show. I was pleased to see him. It was a good monologue. Somehow I didn't think it was all that shocking. I was afraid he was going to say that he'd had sex with children.

I didn't know about the celebrity appearance/monologue others have referenced either, so he was a great surprise.

I don't feel that the monologue itself was shocking -- addicts who've been able to get sober often have some sort of insane experience or life phase that drives their desire to get clean --  for me, it was all in the delivery of a story that just kept elevating but was told in such a straightforward and unemotional way.

If you're going to go on that kind of journey, Thailand is the place to do it.

I want to know why he had to leave the States and why he owes Rick!

They have to be assassins for hire, right? What else could they be? Drug traffickers? And I guess Rick helped him get out of the country?

Jaclyn obviously likes attention. She loved being watched by the three Russian women. I think back on the opening title sequence where the pic accompanying her name is of a woman displaying her boobs on a balcony.

She’s an actress terrified of aging. Anything that makes her feel/appear young and desirable, she’s going to grab on with both hands.

Well said. It’s interesting how she was the only one freaked out when they were hanging at that retirees/old people bar. Both Laurie and Kate seemed fine there, and didn’t really mind the crowd. And she was the only one who insisted on looking for hard fun - she wasn’t going to be satisfied until she was sloshed with alcohol and clubbing.

And don't forget Piper is only there and able to contemplate a year in a Thai mediation center is because of her wealthy family, whose values she says are bullshit but this play makes me think she does have her parents values after all.   She is indeed, a flake.

I like Piper, but lying about her thesis to basically manipulate her parents into giving her a ride to Thailand is not a great look. I think its great that she wants to do her own thing away from her families materialism, but it would be nice if she had some self awareness that she has the opportunity to go to Thailand and study Buddhism for a year because she has her dads money even as she goes on about how their lifestyle is bullshit. How will she take it when she realizes that the money is gone?

Its kind of hilarious how little anyone seems to notice that Timothy is fully crashing out and having a meltdown in the background of every scene he's in.

The incest.  Just..why?  Besides it just being gross/twisted, there are way too many things going on in that one family.  We've got pill addiction, impending jail time/possible suicide, lying about a thesis and now, incest.  That's just, a lot.  Also, Gary/Greg's girlfriend is gross.  Why does she want to sleep with a high school senior?  What in the predatory nonsense is that?

The three friends plotline remains my favorite, probably because it's the most grounded and relatable.

And while I love Belinda (and that green dress she was wearing this episode), why is she asking for permission to call the police?  Just do it!  Do not trust the manager at a resort located in a country that is famous for sex tourism to do the right thing.

Yeah, I've been expecting/dreading that since Episode 1. Season 1 was pretty raunchy; Season 2 was almost tame by comparison. They may be going for shock value again this season.

That monologue was indeed something else, but I'm not sure what the point was. The look on Waltin Goggins face was absolutely priceless throughout.

I think the point is that

Spoiler

Rick will probably find out that his father didn't die, but left his mother for a ladyboy. And Sritala, the madam who owns Lotus ist that ladyboy.

The whole "incest" hype and outrage is just ridiculous. Relatives kissed in the lips, it was always normal for grown up sons or daughters to kiss on lips their mothers or fathers, or sisters, or brothers other relatives. In some South and East-European cultures they still do it now. Big peasant families in Europe, also first Americans slept in the same bed for centuries, generations together, grandparents, their children, children of their children, because they needed to keep warm during cold winters, and only God knows what happened in those beds. Best friends kissed on the lips without any sexual undertone. It's only kinda recently (since about 130 years) when people started to sexualize everything.

You also forget that she's ignored by her husband who doesn't pick up the phone. So she wants a revenge.

I just rewatched and I think Lochlan spit that drug gummy (or whatever it was) out. Right after Saxon finally caved and took one, they all walked off and Locklan hung back a little and looked like he spit something out. If this is true, that makes him even more mysterious. For someone not used to partying, he can sure hold his alcohol. I can't get over how polished his magic tricks were. Like some are saying, he may not be what he seems.

“One day, am gonna take you down.”

There’s a reason why Lochy seems to be more in control than Saxon. He doesn’t actually swallow the candy pill. After Saxon has taken the last one and everybody starts to walk away, you can see in the background that Lochy spits something out with his drink. He may have been planning to take advantage of Saxon all along, with a clear head!

I wouldn’t count S2 as tame. Isn’t it where Tanya found that her assistant’s bf is fucking his so-called uncle? While also sleeping with her assistant. I just feel dirty typing all of that.

I agree that Lochlan is not what he seems.  The magic tricks are a good allegory for him.  I don't think he's preying on Saxton.  I think he's messing with him.  Saxton considers himself such an Alpha male, a manly man, when he's just a boy.  And now he's going to have to live with himself not only kissing another man, but his brother!  I think it's all just a mind fuck.  At least I hope that's what is going on, because it will so take him down a peg.  And the power dynamic between those two will have totally switched.

They keep saying "thesis" in relation to Piper, but she's just an undergrad, right?  I equate thesis with a masters or doctorate, but she's too young for those.  Anyways, I think it's possible her interest in Buddhism is real, given the weird privileged family she's grown up in.  Or, it could just be real for now - she's trying to find herself, Buddhism is exotic and mysterious and offers her a level of comfort.  I knew girls like her in college, who got into all the esoteric stuff at one point, even though they were raised solidly Christian.

This was the episode in which something almost happened to everyone, but didn't.  I'm with everyone else who thought this episode was overhyped.  It's the most dramatic rose ceremony ever!  not.

yawn.

It's sort of like looking at a painting. It's interesting, but it doesn't really do anything.

It's more like watching someone paint a painting!

Very interesting. I'll have to rewatch that scene. The screenshots posted here weren't helpful enuf.

I always saw Lachlan as idolizing Saxon, so if you're right, this will be interesting to see. Also, I've never seen him being duplicitous. In the first ep (I think) when Saxon went into the bathroom to masturbate and Lachlan looked at his naked body, I saw that as Lachlan being sex-curious just in general. But maybe there was more to it than that.

Even as an undergrad she may be writing one. I wrote and presented an honors thesis when I was getting my bachelors degree. Other undergrads were part of a more formal honors program and were required too complete a thesis but even if you weren't in that program, you could still go through the process and graduate "with honors".

In this episode, two hotel employees made themselves sexually available upon request from the guests.

Also, the manager implied that Belinda had a “fan” “very rich” who inquired despite his cute girlfriend.  I wonder if a subtext is that hotel employees are available in that way.  And Belinda will find it’s part of her “training.”

The circumstance here was clearly sexual -- the girls had kissed one another in order to be titillating, and then urged the brothers to kiss, for them to watch. The men were not greeting one another or giving one another a gesture of affection.  The audience didn't sexualize the kiss, it was clearly set out to be sexual and not fraternal.

I'm not really enjoying this season so far. There are some good or interesting scenes, but I keep thinking there's a lot of padding.

It's all padding. The season started with an active shooting. Then we flashed back a week. Until we get back to the shooting? Padding.

That doesn't make it "incest." Two brothers goofing around and kissing on the lips isn't incest.

INCEST: noun

  • sexual intercourse between closely related persons.
  • the crime of sexual intercourse, cohabitation, or marriage between persons within the degrees of consanguinity or affinity wherein marriage is legally forbidden.

Man, I really felt Kate’s discomfort. I have never, ever been a party type, but there were a couple of times in college where I ended up going out with a group where things got a lot wilder than anticipated. All I wanted to do was go home, take out my contacts and put on my pjs.

The siblings are becoming more interesting to me.....

The bolded part is me, every night.  I related so hard to Kate in that scene.

What I can't figure out about the siblings....the first episode, one of the first scenes showed Saxon grabbing Piper around the waist "playfully," but her tone of voice asking him to stop made it clear that she was not amused, while their parents stood there doing nothing.  That was the first red flag.  Then (unsure of what episode), Piper told Locky that she planned to stay in Thailand and Locky said, "what about me?"  And this episode, while we see Locky and Saxon partying, there is one shot of Piper meditating alone, where she is simply staring into space.  I have a million theories and they are probably all wrong about what is going on with these three but whatever it is, their parents are clueless - mom is drugged and dad has been too busy working to see it.  Similarly, dad is having a complete nervous breakdown and if anyone in the Ratliff family has clocked it, they're ignoring it.  Could be the same with whatever is going on between the kids.

Sam Rockwell's monologue sort of epitomizes the whole point of White Lotus. Get a strong actor, give them a bunch of interesting dialogue and let them act their ass off. It's all just character study for the sake of character study.

It's sort of like looking at a painting. It's interesting, but it doesn't really do anything.

I wonder if the scene with Rockwell is just to have two actors show their chops or maybe Rick will back off from the ledge as far as violently confronting the guy he believes killed his father.

I would hope the scene leads to something, a decision one way or another, rather than show that Americans and Westerners with money and some unresolved issues go to Thailand and Asia to work out their issues or give in to their excesses.

The rich people who are guests to resorts like TWL, at least as depicted on this show, are all screwed up to some extent.  Maybe Mike White wants to take the piss out of them, lean into the social satire.

Or maybe some of his characters grow if not change in some way because of TWL experience.

For instance, will Rick get some satisfaction or resolution confronting the hotel owner's husband?

Will the Ratliffs' lives change dramatically, either for the better or worse?

The thing is, in previous seasons, the show made it seem like these characters were going to have big changes in their lives.  But for instance, Rachel didn't end up divorcing her rich husband and I don't believe the Mossbachers   had their lives disrupted either.

I guess Tanya did meet Greg and it led to a very unfortunate fate for her.

But not sure that these characters undergo any serious change.  They return to who they were before the visit, usually flawed in some way.

I just rewatched the relevant scenes of the brothers and women taking the pills, and I didn't see any evidence that Lachlan spit it out. I'm sure he swallowed it (or let it dissolve on his tongue or whatever).

As far as Frank's monologue goes, he was talking about what led him to Buddhism. He was obsessed with a life of drugs and sex, and it was empty. He realized that in that life what he wanted was to fuck himself, which may be the ultimate form of narcissism, but it was never enough. He could never get enough. He wondered who he was, if he was the same on the inside as the outside, and that caused him to seek out Buddhism to learn about his true self.

I think it's relevant to everyone on the show. What they pursuing their true self or are their lives facades.

Oh, you and I definitely differ on this.  I've seen Lachlan as mostly tolerating Saxon.  Like the bit with the power smoothies.  Major eyerolls from Lachlan, he thinks they're stupid, and only will drink one when Saxon just won't let up on it.  He shows the same attitude when Saxon is trying to "teach" him about women, sex, whatever.  He sees Saxon strike out again and again, and laughs at him.  I think Lachlan admires Saxon's confidence, but sees it as all show.  Right at the beginning of the scene where they take the drugs, Lachlan says to Saxon "One day, I'm going to take you down."  Saxon laughs it off, but damn, I think he's serious.

As for the drugs, I also think Lachlan spit it out.  I thought something was up the first time, but I rewatched that part.  The time frame above is when he takes the drug - that's the first part of the scene.  It picks back up about 30 seconds later, and right after Saxon finally takes the drug we see them walking away, Lachlan is behind everyone, swigs his beer and spits it out.  (Right about 32:09)  If you watch him between the time he takes the drug and 32:09 when he spits out his beer, it looks to me like he's pocketed the pill in his gums/cheek.

Is that a streaming service? I think I remember it being one, because I wanted to watch And Just Like That when it came out. One has to sign-in  and the person who's  account the  TV/phone/internet  service is in has forgotten her account user name + password. She's 90, btw.

One day I'll have to see if I can get on a call with her and the company and see what we can do to straighten it out ...  but today I don't have the strength.

That was really a letdown after a whole episode of build-up. The intense drum beat and the dancing and the increasingly risky and risqué behavior… it seemed like it was leading up to either the Russians harming/robbing the women or someone at least cracking their head open and/or drowning in the pool. And it seemed like there was going to be a full-on orgy with the other group ...aaaand… Pool party’s over! Peck on the lips. That’s it?!? A whole lot of build-up for nothing.

Since there’s already a lot of commentary on the sober sometimes ladyboy likely hitman buddy scene, I’m going to give a shout-out to my other favorite acting of this episode—Belinda! She was killing me with the whisper and faces you know. Killed. His. Wife. And then giving consent. Do you have consent here? We just got it.

This episode almost made me give up the whole thing. They can't even do "shocking" right. If you're going to show an incest, go for it. A simple kiss won't do it. If you're planning an orgy, do it accordingly. Boys and girls naked on the pool and then no one gets laid? Thank God for Jacilyn, making us girls proud. Kate, just go to bed and let your friends have fun.

That monologue did nothing for me. It was just boring and useless.

I don't remember White Lotus ever being this bad. 5 episodes of nothing? Oh please. Thank God for Jason Isaacs and Carrie C00n, they are so good to look at, it's almost worth it!

The background music for this show is so intense, seeming to always be building up to something major. It hardly ever lets up, and gets more intrusive with each season.  And you rarely see anything that warrants it. It’ll cut to the next day, and everyone’s just sleeping in their beds or something. I guarantee if we watched this show without the sound effects, it would come off as a tedious soap opera in a lot of scenes. I don’t need nonstop massive reveals, but manipulating me into thinking every scene is a cliffhanger and then have it go nowhere is really getting annoying.

it’s the characters that keep my attention, but that’s where it’s falling behind the other seasons. Of course, Walton is killing it, and the 3 friends are so true to life, you can’t look away.  Belinda is annoying to me. She just walks around getting massages and looking scared and confused.  But she’s more tolerable than the security guard who always looks like he’s going to burst into tears.

Yeah the soundtrack as they cut between different scenes, the women partying with the Russians and Lochy, Saxon, Chelsea and Chloe drinking and taking ecstasy was loud and intense.

Kind of sounded like some tribal or ritual music.  In a way it was, there were mating rituals going on, though the only hookups were Jaclyn and Valentin and Lochy and Saxon.

Meanwhile they also cut to Rick and his friend having dinner and the other guy talking about his sexual proclivities, though the atmosphere was a lot calmer.

I don't think it's going to turn out that Rick's dad is actually Sritala, but if that does happen, I imagine Rick will take that so much better after hearing Frank's monologue than if he never heard it at all.

"Oh," he'd nearly collapse in relief after Sritala explains she always felt like a woman her whole life, even though that meant leaving Rick and Rick's mom behind.  "That's so normal.  Compared to other people I know."

Frank's monologue hits as random, but seems applicable to the Ratliffs.

I was out of control, I was insatiable.  And you know, after about 1000 nights like that, you start to lose it.

Tim's greed - he even spoke about the $10MM he made from his illegal dealings like that is measly.

Why does it have such a grip on me, because she's the opposite of me?  Is she gonna complete me in some way?

Piper is running away from her family and her life to the complete opposite.  I don't even know how much she likes Buddhism on its own merits vs. being so different from her family.  I see Piper as a fairly empty vessel (not unlike Beck in season 1 of "You" tbh).  She just wants "not like them" and thinks Buddhism/meditation will be the answer.  But when it's not the answer, I don't think she has any sense of self to fall back on.

I'd think: I am her.  And I'm fucking me.

When Saxon sees himself in Lochlan (which he thinks he's always wanted; he's always trying to make Lochlan be like him and be in his image), and how Lochlan is ... whatever he ends up doing of a sexual nature in the remaining episodes ... it may be an epiphany for Saxon.  I don't know if Saxon will turn over another leaf like Frank did with spirituality and celibacy, but experiencing someone like himself preying on Saxon will probably be jarringly new to him.

Don't think this is going to happen, but if Lochlan repeats Saxon's earlier line of "wanting young come" (or whatever that was) in a sexual context to Saxon, I will run from my house screaming.  That would be far beyond the standard yelling of "no!" at the tv.  If neighbors or police stop me, I will tell them, "you don't understand, the latest episode of The White Lotus," and they look it up online and say, "oh yeah ... this Sam Rockwell monologue ... whoa," and I will say, "no, a later episode," and they will say, "you mean more wildly uncomfortable than the Sam Rockwell monologue?" and I will fall to my knees, whispering incoherently.

I am not liking Piper any better than the rest of her awful family.  She is just a shallow as a puddle rich girl who is going to do a year of Buddhism with probably zero change to her vapid self.

I love that notion floating around that Rick's dad isn't dead but transitioned. Since I never get what I want on this show I am not holding my breath for that.

I have a whole list of who can bite it on this show and I will be slightly tickled.  but no dead monkeys or Chelsea.

I think she's pretty standard run of the mill college student trying to find her way in the world and break away from her family.  Yeah, she's rich, but I saw a lot of women in college (midwest state school, not richy rich college) break from "traditional" religions and try out new spiritual paths, usually either an Eastern religion or some sort of woo-woo earth mother stuff.  If I had Victoria for a mother, I'd be trying to find my exit plan, too.

Here's what I don't understand about rich white collar criminals...  why aren't they putting at least 1/2 of their ill-gotten gains in an untouchable account?  They know how to do this.  Tim's worried not only about going to jail, but about his family being destitute.  Geez, if they had $5 million in some off-shore/Swiss account, they could go hang in a foreign villa for a few years while you're in a cushy white collar Fed Med.
