THURSDAY, MARCH 21, 8:00-9:00 p.m. EDT

The disastrous cruise continues when Bobby and Athena respond to the ship's explosion, racing to aid injured passengers. Meanwhile, Hen questions her instincts in a life-taking call and grows concerned about Athena and Bobby's whereabouts.

Damn it Lola.   What have you done now.!  But it looks like White collar guy is not all bad.

If you don’t feel Bobby and Athena after this episode I have nothing to tell you.  They aren’t perfect and danger is very much their kink but they do love each other.

I wasn’t really feeling Hen’s story this week and thought it was just something to throw in besides the adventures of Bobby and Athena on the Titanic.

Cash out guy really should have left without his money.

She was a bit of a brat going after her friends for not lying about things they didn't see but also claiming she's not asking them to lie.  It's not like Chim can smell things he didn't smell.

I can't wait until next week when the show is going to pretend that everyone who got on the lifeboats survived cruise-ship-high waves that overturned a much bigger ship.

I love how the show went full "Poseidon Adventure," in the last few minutes. This is the crazy, whimsical 9-1-1 at its best.

And when the big wave came, I paraphrased Bobby's thoughts as ANOTHER goddam tsunami? Seriously?

As for Hen's actions, she behaved completely professionally, and even if they had examined the drunk driver and suspected a brain bleed, there wasn't anything they could do. Karen proved to be a wise counselor.

As far as getting someone to pay attention to a missing cruise ship, doesn't the US have, I don't know, a Navy? They certainly have CIS in every port. Or, you know, the Coast Guard?

Ah. but the Coast Guard was "working the hurricane", so apparently a cruise ship doesn't warrant their attention?

Everyone who isn’t in our main group/extended group (have we seen any of the non Maddie 991 group like Josh since the move to ABC?)  are either evil or incompetent.  In some cases both.

And right now no one even in the 118 is believing Hen.   So of course she has to be the o r to find Bobby and Athena.

Although to contradict my entire post I want Lady Captain to do something heroic….and not die in the process.

please 911 don’t kill Lady Captain.

I know this show does over-the-top stuff all the time but this is ridiculous, they are really piling on one rip-off after another. First Captain Phillips with the pirates followed by Titanic with Bobby and Athena trapped in the rising water and now the Poseidon Adventure with the giant wave literally turning the ship upside down. Even a recreation of the scene of the guy falling into the skylight. Sheesh. Subtle much?

We've had all kinds of disasters for season openers and finales from earthquakes to tsunamis but they've never done such blatant movie rip-offs before.

Also, how did the pirates manage to rig up a bomb like that in engineering? Even if some of them managed to get down there it looked like something that would have taken a long time to hook up, and wouldn't there have been workers down there who saw them? Did anyone see any of the pirates board the ship with a giant bomb?

8 hours ago, CoyoteBlue said:

The captain said the pirates took out their transponder so there's no way to alert anyone of their location, which is why Hen couldn't find it on the radar or whatever she pulled up on her phone. But the fact that the cruise ship wasn't accounted for should have in itself set off alarms somewhere. You'd think.

I have to hand it to them, they really did capture the feeling of a big melodramatic 70s disaster movie. A huge cast of characters, a couple on the ricks due to adulty, some white collar crime happening that has nothing to do with the actual disaster, a romance, a selfish asshole who's obsessed with money even during a crisis, all we need is some cocaine and a heroic dog to have a full 70s extravaganza!

When the hell did the pirates have time to plant a bomb? I thought this would just be a two-parter, but it looks like we aren't out of the storm yet. Are the people in the life boats really going to be alright in the middle of this huge storm that can topple a whole cruise ship?

A theme of the episode seemed to be "having to deal with unreasonable assholes" between casino guy and rich meth car guy. At least smuggler guy came back to help Bobby and Athena at the end, despite how scummy his scheme was. Oh Lola, what a horrible way to find out that your being cheated on.

Hopefully this puts to end any lingering doubts Bobby and Athena have about their relationship, their love language might be disasters but they obviously really love each other.

Hen's story seemed to be just padding before we get all hands on deck (pun not intended) for the cruise ship wreck. She handled the situation just fine, the guy refused treatment and there was only so much they could make him do, but I think she was pretty unfair to the rest of the team. They were just telling what they saw and smelled, lying about what they experienced would just make Hen look worse.

Usually I do not like multi-part episodes, but this really worked for me.
Maybe the Law & Order reboot writers should take note.

And now, for my complaints:

Sure. Whatever. But what was up with these lines when they thought they were drowning in a minute?

  • [ATHENA] I love you, husband.
  • [BOBBY] I love you. I love you, my wife.

I was once married for 8 years and we never called each other "Husband" and "Wife." Is that the real reason my marriage didn't work?
Just kidding, but has anyone here who's ever been married called their spouse "Husband" or "Wife"???

Maybe the real reason we never feel that Bobby and Athena are in love is the clunky dialog.

So Hen gets away with ordering Chim not to treat the entitled, argumentative, combative, rich young dude who caused an accident with serious injuries to a mother and daughter even after he was cuffed???
Hopefully she continues the "maybe I was wrong" confessional with Chim
— after, of course, she's saved Athena and Bobby.

Having some open water swimming experience: I'd guess some of the people in the life boats would survive by having not immediately drowned when their boats were pounded by enormous waves and dragged under water (or sucked under when the ship sinks), and by having had life jackets on.

So, here's how I see it.

Rich entitled dude verbally said that he did not consent to an examination. The team was right smack in the middle of an emergency. He said multiple times he didn't want an examination. Even if Hen had forced an examination after he was cuffed, the dude was dying, anyway. He was dead before he hit the ground, it sounds like. There was literally nothing Hen could have done. He was still fighting the officers who cuffed him.

She was right in just focusing her attention on the other people who were harmed at that moment. Chimney certainly could have just examined him himself if he wanted to, but ultimately, the rich dude said he didn't want to be examined and imagine if he was fine and an examination WAS forced on him, he would have sued Chimney/Hen for that. At the time, the only sign he was showing was aggression/agitation but he wasn't bleeding, didn't show any physical signs of trauma, nothing. They still detained him after he refused care.

Seeing as this guy didn't care one bit about the victims he injured, and that's likely NOT due to his brain bleed but overall personality (you could tell he had threatened law enforcement once or twice before with implying his family connection to the city), I also fully get why the potential brain bleed wasn't immediately recognized.

Hen may have partially been acting emotionally, but she really was also correct in letting the focus be drawn to the victims in the other car. They were the ones who really needed help and the rich dude who caused the crash didn't want to be assessed.

The Hen stuff was decent, but probably not necessary just to push Hen into the Bobby/Athena danger ship plot.

The Bobby/Athena stuff was overdramatic and the writing/acting when they were trapped in that room with the water filling up was melodramatic, but I've kind of accepted that both Peter Krause and Angela Bassett are just having fun with this series, rather than treating it like a serious TV role. They have earned their pay, so they can do whatever the hell they want with the corny dialogue and the ridiculous plot.

I feel like they really could have gotten rid of two subplots and the cruise ship disaster stuff would have flowed a bit better.

But, it is overall just a fun plot to watch. It's supposed to be ridiculous, so I'm just having fun with it.

I didn't know this was going to be a 3 parter (it's ending next week, right?) They're dragging this out. People are used to streaming these kinds of to-be-continued stories now. Having it go over 3 literal weeks is testing my patience.

My listings say that they are re-playing this episode next week and giving us Ep 3 the week after. Curses March Madness!

It' possible my listings are wrong-- it wouldn't be the first time. But that's what they say right now.

I agree with the analysis that Hen did the best she could with the guy who refused to be examined. And in fact the show also came to that conclusion when they cleared her of wrongdoing.

But I do think she had a point when she was pissed off that her team was acting like she'd done something wrong. They could have backed her up-- especially Chim, who saw how hard the guy was resisting the exam-- without lying. "I didn't smell the alcohol, but the guy was actively refusing the exam and we would have had to physically restrain him to get him to submit to it. We tried a few times to convince him, and to explain why he should let us do it, and he was threatening to sue us if we persisted." That is the truth, and it supports Hen's position.

And the other guys didn't even see what happened, so their default should have been to assume she did NOT make a mistake, rather than that she did, because they should know by now that she's trustworthy. And I don't blame her for thinking that is how they all would have behaved if Bobby had made the call.

I think they had that plot so they could give the rest of the cast something to do instead of leaving the whole episode to Athena and Bobby. It was a way to get Hen to notice that the ship was not on the map anymore, but that could have easily been done another way.

The homages to all the 70s disaster flicks made me laugh more than anything. This show has always had a campy side to it. I love it, but I don't watch it for realism.

I thought he was somehow at a lighthouse! I didn't think the ship had a "crow's nest"!

He could still have drowned, though.

---

The more I think about it, the more out of character and rotten it is that the team was weird with Hen and not 100% and strongly backing her. They've never been that way toward teammates before. Maybe they want to do a plot about sexism or racism, but it's not really in keeping with how these characters have been for many seasons.

This was classic 9-1-1 and I loved it.

  • I love Bobby and Athena so much. This is a case where I reallyreallyreally hope the actors like each other because they are so wonderful on screen together. I love the fact that they are grown ass adult who love each other completely. I was reminded of the episode in S4 where Athena walked into a burning building to save Bobby.

  • I really like how they brought us back to Bobby's regret about what happened to his family. That's part of the character's DNA and it makes perfect sense that he would make that kind of confession

  • It's not 9-1-1 without random assholes. The drunk dude at the traffic stop. The "cash me out" guy on the ship. One of the things I love about this show is how they give us obvious villains to hate and we get to see them pay.

  • I feel like the show doesn't know what to do with Hen and honestly, neither do I.

  • I want Lady Captain to live because I want her to become a recurring character.

  • I remember watching The Poseidon Adventure with my parents just like Athena did and I have the same feeling about cruise ships. 😃

FFS, please stop saying “dongle” repeatedly. It’s a flash drive. 🙄

Why would Athena carry zip ties and a knife with her on the cruise?

Hijacking, bomb explosion, hurricane, hit by monstrous wave & sinking ship - Titanic was less dramatic than this. Those on lifeboats are definitely goners, they will not survive that giant wave.

Hen really has good instincts. She’s the first one to realize something is off with Bathena’s cruise ship. Unfortunately, Hen doesn’t have the right temperament to be a captain. Bobby wouldn’t have snapped at the 3 Judases.

Maybe at least the Coast Guard or someone saw lights and will tell Hen???

How is Hen the only person to notice that the cruise ship has disappeared?  Doesn't the ship's company have a main office that tracks their ships?  Especially those in the vicinity of a tropical storm/hurricane?  Wouldn't they have noticed the transponder was no longer working and have tried to contact the ship, and when unable to do so, notified the appropriate authorities?

I'm still not sure why the pump room filled up with water because of an electrical short (and how that helped right the ship). But I'm very impressed smuggler guy managed to open that door, have an entire room full of water drain past him into the hallway and yet was still fresh as a daisy.

That is what those lifeboats are designed to do. They have multiple buoyancy bladders and right themselves when capsized.  It should take the pirates mining those boats like they did the ship to sink them.

The whole time the 'dongle' scene was playing out, I was wondering where all the other passengers were. Sure seemed like everyone inside had just carried on drinking and partying, as Cash Me Out guy was all offended that they had to use his table to hold poor Daniel Roebuck after he was shot. Seems we should've seen additional 'pirates' on the inside holding guns on everyone throughout the whole ship, but I don't even know how that work.  And I don't buy for one minute that Cash Me Out guy would not have scrambled his ass to a lifeboat first chance he got. Much of this episode just didn't make sense and it felt like there were lots of missing beats. Didn't care for Hen's story either...just seemed too predictable. I love this show, but this season's opening disaster has been a miss for me so far.

I did like the ship flipping over. I have never seen The Poseiden Adventure, but I've been wanting to watch the original for years. So this episode has at least intensified that desire, haha.

Sure, I'm here for the silly too. The pilot had Buck hijacking the fire truck to chase after some girl. But at this rate by next season Hen will be pregnant with Rosemary's baby and Chim will save E.T. There needs to be a limit on ripping off movies.

Hen got called in to talk to her boss who was Jubal Early! From Firefly! He sounded so sinister even in his ordinary lines.

To me, Athena and Bobby have the least/no chemistry of anyone on this show. I mostly liked them here (except for the "husband" "my wife" crap) but they were in action mode.

I continue to love the minor characters on this show. Loved the car accident daughter and mom, loved the captain, even liked the sleazy bitcoin guy.

The wave was awesome

Oh, I noticed the grunting! I assumed it was scenery-chewing audio effects added in post to convey the effort to open the various doors, hatches, and valves.

But one more thing that still bugs:
When Athena whacked Julian, thieving cruise director, with the fire extinguisher, IRL she would have knocked out his front teeth, broken his nose, and delivered a serious concussion.
I realize this sort of violence delivered with no serious consequences is par for the course on TV, but I would prefer Athena causing the thief to have a pratfall of some sort.
— And not just because back in Hen's world such violence would've had Athena put on administrative leave at the very least.

Krause completely nailed that moment, and it was totally believable. Bobby has come a long way, but he will always blame himself for his family's death. And saying that he didn't deserve Athena, what a sad thing to say.

Well, just like Abbott Elementary has "cruise ship Barbara," 911 has "cruise ship Athena." So of course she travels with a knife and zip ties. And since she's in international waters, she can play fast and loose with her perps. ;-)

I really wish that the LAFD chief guy had told Hen that the guy wasn't drunk but multiple witnesses confirmed that he refused care. And based on the fact that there were other victims trapped in the car that hadn't yet been assessed, she obviously had to prioritize and made the right call.

As for the whole cruise thing it was just weird. Like wouldn't they have to have some other form of communication with land, like satellite phones or something? Otherwise if the ship sinks and they are on the lifeboats how do they communicate with the world?

Also my wife and I did a cruise about 15 years ago and at one of the ports they had to use the lifeboats to shuttle people to land. And those things are big, and fully enclosed. Not some little rowboat like you saw in this episode.

And lastly was the guy who was shot really named Norm Peterson? Was he from Boston, and is his best friend a mail man?

I've done a rewatch and I have additional thoughts:

  • To the person upthread who mentioned he grunting and groaning, thanks for that. I started cracking up.
  • Angela Basset can deliver the most ridiculous dialogue in the most dramatic way. "HE DOESN'T HAVE ANY DAMN DONGLE!!" was a line reading for the ages.
  • Kudos to the stunt actors. There was a lot of really good stunt work in this episode especially after the explosion and the tidal wave.
  • I wonder how much of the season's budget got spent on these three episodes. I hope there's still enough for the rest of the season. Otherwise the 118 will spend the rest of the season getting cats out of trees.

The rotating set was pretty impressive. I would definitely watch a behind the scenes thing to see how they did that.

Also with the number of people on a cruise ship, the number of swimming pools and other activities and the amount of alcohol served I really doubt that the ship's doctor mostly just handles sea sickness.

Ok show you've redeemed yourself. I'm a hopeless romantic who loves love so all the melodrama with Bathena was right up my alley. I love the ridiculous rescues on this crazy show but keeps me coming back are the relationships whether romantic or platonic.  I also enjoy the fact that there are no characters that I actively dislike. The hopelessness and heartache of what was essentially a goodbye between Bathena turned me into a giant snot bubble. Rationally I knew neither character was getting killed off but the drama of it all drew me in anyway.  Nicely done AB & PK! Speaking of PK I don't know if it was the fit or color of the shirt he was wearing but baby he was looking like a whole ass snack throughout this episode! Now if only the show would give us a little more of that Season 2 Ep.1 Bathena who were all over each other in that opening montage that would be great. We know Athena likes to get her freak on and I suspect so does Bobby so in the words of  Wendell let them have some sexy fun times between the sheets! Please and thank you show🥰

I wonder if it a case of since the ship has its transponder off the US coast gaurd is assuming the Mexican coast has it in thier sights and vice versa. It did look rather close to the border so it may be a case of each government assuming the other is taking care of it. Especially since no SOS has gone out.

Oh yea I didn't even think about that. I was more thinking of people who do dumb stuff around a pool or on a pool deck after a few daiquiris. So lots of broken bones and near drownings. And now that I think about it with the number of older people on a cruise ship I imagine heart attacks/strokes aren't uncommon either. So sure they don't deal with too many shootings but I bet a cruise ship doctor deals with a lot of ER style emergencies on a regular basis.

The shot husband was named Norm Peterson: imdb.com/title/tt31523319
— played by Daniel Roebuck,
who played Cliff Lewis in 49 episodes of Matlock 30 years ago.

OMG, yes! I have to watch Matlock whenever I visit my grandma. I hadn't made the connection that it was the same actor.

Nearly forty years and never once have we used husband and wife in that way.

I didn't know this was going to be a 3 parter (it's ending next week, right?) They're dragging this out. People are used to streaming these kinds of to-be-continued stories now. Having it go over 3 literal weeks is testing my patience.

I was not happy to hear that. I enjoy most of the silly over the top rescues, but this one is not...shall we say...floating my boat.

Glad to know I'm not the only one who thought it was weird.

Most cruises would at least have IV bags for dehydration and extreme seasickness.

Medical facilities on board a cruise ship are on par with a major hospital's ICU.

my wife and I did a cruise about 15 years ago and at one of the ports they had to use the lifeboats to shuttle people to land. And those things are big, and fully enclosed. Not some little rowboat like you saw in this episode.

Those were tenders, not lifeboats. Depending on the cruise line and the location where you need to be transported, some of the tenders are smaller and not enclosed.

The lifeboats, however, are strictly for emergency use.
