The Golden Bachelor - General Discussion

Plenty of retirees  work another job after retirement.     I know one who works part time at a hospital , taking patients  where they need to go in the hospital.   One who works at a grocery store.   And there are plenty others.    Some people are not that good at retirement.  They like having something to do and some do that through volunteer work but others take on a job for the insurance benefits.   Part time, full time, whatever.     They just want a job to get them out of the   lol house, and for the social aspect.   And while insurance benefits are a big deal, if you are too young for medicare, the actual pay is usually  not  important.

That being said, I do not care for Gerry.  I just think he's dorky though, not a scheming playboy.    I could be wrong.   lol

By the way, I wasn't feeling great a few days ago and thought a nap might help.  I tend to fall asleep watching tv, during the day so i put on the first episode of the Golden Bachelor, thinking i would quickly doze off.     I have learned that cannot get sleepy or doze off, when you are constantlly cringing. lol.   I had forgotten how much cringe  was in that first episode.

Yeah I know someone who was an investment banker or something like that; now he works at Lowes-- it's been great because he can use his employee discount to buy appliances for our church! He's one of those who just likes to get out of the house.

I don't think Gerry is scheming, but I do think he really likes the attention and molded his persona to be "good for TV."

$100 says he had no input into this playlist.  Production, baby.  Production.  ABC has to pay royalties for any song where there's even a note heard, so I bet there were musicians' publicists, producers, and lawyers galore in the choosing of this "special" playlist.

Even the "Happy Birthday" song is copyrighted, and therefore requires royalty payments, which is why it's rarely heard on TV.  They'll bring a cake out and show people standing around, but the actual song is rarely actually heard.

So yeah, ABC has carefully curated the special playlist to help highlight certain artists who need publicity.

Don't know if this is true, I am there for the comments. 😂

The main source of contention is that Theresa “wants a prenup” according to a source close to The Golden Duo. “He’s offended that she doesn’t trust him. They’re bickering all the time now — unless the cameras are on.”

The insider went on, “She wants to stick it out, though her friends think it’s for the wrong reasons.”

Well, what a surprise .. NOT !    I figured she was smart in thst department.  Why did they have to get married in the first place?  Why not live together?  They hardly know each other.  I wouldn’t be surprised if they have a “ mock” wedding on tv and not a real wedding.  They hardly know each other.  What’s the rush?  Is she pregnant?  Haha .. of course not.

Just after the first episode I was talking to a friend who knew Gerry's wife and Gerry. She said he had cheated on his wife and that after his wife died he had a live-in girlfriend with whom he had broken up with after telling her he was embarrassed about the weight she had gained. My friend's niece is invited to the wedding as she is friends with Gerry's daughter. I don't understand why anyone would believe him. He was overly dramatic on the show and didn't seem authentic to me. I watched for entertainment but lost interest before the final rose. He totally lied about his career, as he was a janitor at a hospital for years. There is nothing wrong with being a janitor, but to lie about it, that's another story. Theresa needs to listen to her friends and do some research. It isn't difficult to find out the truth.

This is a snipped message from the comment section from the story @Armchair Critic posted above about Gerry balking at signing a prenup.

Run Theresa! Run!

In my travels around the web, I ran across a forum for geezers, lol. Called Senior Forums . Com  For those who might be interested.

I have not joined, but have found it fun to read.

I've belonged to Senior Forum for 7 years.  It can be fun, but not as much fun as you guys on a roll.

Mama June and Sugar Bear (Honey Boo Boo's parents...yikes) had a big wedding on their show, but it ended up just being a "commitment ceremony" and they were not legally married. After all the money ABC is putting towards this I doubt they would let Gerry and Theresa get away with that though.

We just have to speak our minds.  Right now, I think Gerry screwed up.  He heard “stockbroker” and quickly chose Teresa, but I really think his heart was with what’s her face .. the other one.  Teresa seems desparate for a man, so she’s going thru with it, but I think it will be a mock wedding.  This marriage was too quick.  I don’t like what I was reading about this guy, like he’s a scammer.  Hope I’m wrong for her sake.  A new house already?  Too quick.  Just hope Tre will keep her house in Jersey.  I’ve been reading too many things about this guy .. not good.  Where’s there’s smoke, there’s fire.

Is there a difference?.  If so?  What?

Senior Forum is for older people to talk about anything and everything. For example they have a thread that's been running for years that's nothing but pictures of tea pots.  There are also serious threads about things in the news, health, pets, finance, any subject at all except politics.

So that's all fine, but a forum like Primetimer takes the focus off us and our problems, and puts it on TV Shows, so we have far less chance of personally offending each other. We can just let ourselves go and get snarky  about people or TV characters who are either fictional or just unlikely to ever read this board.

I wouldn't trust his family either because they have been covering his lies. His claim that he hadn't dated in 45 years. Also he hasn't been a restaurateur (he was a fry cook mostly of a greasy spoon) for about 40 years, he was last working as a janitor. I am glad we can at least discuss it here (although some of his fans may not like it).

I don't think they're going to have a real wedding. Nothing legal and binding, anyway. Why bother when they can celebrate or affirm a loving and committed relationship without doing so?

Sure, if they purchase a house together, that'd require a codicil in their respective wills, I guess, and maybe there would be some other will changes and such.

But it would truly surprise me if they really did the deed. Not that they couldn't; I'd just be surprised, that's all.

Ok .. thanks for all that.  I get it now.  I think I rather talk about the shows. 😀👍

Would you call a McDonald's franchise owner  "a fry cook mostly of a greasy spoon" (a term usually referring to a diner, anyway)?

And if Gerry were a fry cook, or later a janitor, is there some unworthiness attached to these jobs? I get the "lies" accusations, but there seems also to be an implied denigration here.

In any case, here is what seems to be the reality of Gerry’s varied career history.

Irony Alert: Mr. Fell in Love So Soon's restaurant was Mr. Quick.

I think what we see will be a real marriage ceremony. They each could have continued dating on their own without this show.

This isn't "MAFS: Australia," and Gerry and Theresa aren't whatever generation is in their 20s now. Catholic Treesa isn't  going to merely, as we used to say, shack up with Gerry, nope, not having included her entire family in this televised venture.

They will marry. They will honeymoon in fabulous Italy. They will move to and establish a home in SC. They (and families) will be filmed. They have tasted ABC's bread, and will want to keep it buttered.

In short, Gerry and Theresa Turner will (aim to) become our Golden Ryan and Trista Sutter.

Ooooh.  That Mr. Quick looks pretty sweet to me, with the picnic tables outside like that.  Ever since I saw Breaking Bad's Gus Fring running his spotless chicken restaurant, I've had the urge for a franchise of my own --  skipping the side deal with the cartel, though.

I will confess to never having watched this show, so I have no opinion about the Bachelor or the woman he chose.  But I do think it's crazy that people have apparently been criticizing his playlist for their wedding reception because it's not oldies songs but all current music.  Like those of us who aren't young aren't allowed to listen to pop radio and enjoy some of what we hear?  Hell, if I get married anytime this decade, I'm definitely going to have them play Lil Boo Thang at the reception because it's fun as hell to dance to.

I saw Gerry’s playlist for the reception and either he is hipper than me when it comes to modern music or his grand daughters helped him choose the songs. Theresa wasn’t my first pick and I still think Gerry has been deceptive about too many things, but I do hope their marriage works out.

Well, they are both in their seventies, in pretty good shape, will have lots of money, will be living in a new house in a new state, will travel lots, eat at good restaurants .. the list goes on n on.  Not a bad situation for the rest of their lives.  As long as they like each other, things will be good.  Teresa looks thrilled to have a man on her arm.  Gerry is thrilled to be living the life with lots of money.

The American Happy Birthday song went into the public domain in 2016 and is now starting to show up in TV and movies. Given the US cultural footprint other nations are starting to pick up the song to supplement their own local birthday celebration tunes
