If Kelly's charges were federal, he'll serve 85% of the term, or 17 1/2 years.

I wish Ghis would get a tougher prison than the one they're talking about sending her to, with real security.    If she ever gets out, she'll be long gone to somewhere without extradition.

Her husband (the one she didn't even admit to have until recently) dumped her for someone else., back in January.   Also, some articles say he's a former Navy SEAL, nope, he was a Coast Guard officer, not the same thing at all.

85% of 30 is 25.5 years. 85% of Maxwell’s sentence would be 17 years. Both were federal. Neither of them got bail so they both should get significant time served credit. Kelly is also facing more federal charges in Chicago as well as charges in Minnesota.

If I'm not mistaken, Kelly also has another trial coming up in August.

Whoops I cross-posted with @Dani! I was referencing the Chicago trial. Had no clue he had another one for MN.

I'm so happy R. Kelly and Maxwell are both going away for a long time. I do wish they had the same sentence since they basically committed the same crime.

Kelly was convicted and sentenced on racketeering in addition to the sex trafficking. So this may be why he got more time.

Being that both were convicted and sentenced on federal charges they will serve their full sentences. As I understand federal prisons abolished parole in the 80s. So Kelly and Maxwell have essentially been given life in prison considering their ages. Yes it’s possible they’ll outlive their sentences but the odds are not in their favor. And even if they do outlive their sentences they‘ll be too old to resume the abuse, rape and sex trafficking that put them in prison in the first place. It’s too bad they lived their best lives before getting caught though. I hate that these sexual predators are all past their primes, some of whom having one foot in the grave and one on a banana peel, before they are caught and made to pay for their crimes. It’s so unfair to the victims.

I do hope that they, the victims, can find some solace in the results of these cases, and are healing from the traumas they suffered.

Effectively the same crimes but R. Kelly was convicted on 9 charges compared to Maxwell’s 5 convictions.

They did replace parole with supervised release but they still allow for sentence reduction based on good behavior. Both will have to serve a minimum of 85% of their sentences.

Eta: Supervised release is separate from credit for good behavior and is a part of the initial sentence. Both Maxwell and Kelly got 5 years of supervised release.

Josh Duggar got 12 1/2 years for downloading and possessing child port on federal charges, but 20 years of supervised release because the judge didn't think he was going to stay away from children. I can see the 5 years for Maxwell because her benefactor is gone and teen girls, who will be even more online and worldly decades from now, are not going to listen to an 80 year old woman give them a line about great opportunities. Kelly though, he should get more due to his fame and and the money he's almost definitely got hidden in offshore accounts that may still attract women after he gets out. Parts of the Black community still support him and think he got railroaded. One of his brainwashed girlfriends is standing by him and says they're engaged.

What are the odds they will behave themselves and get that 15% deduction of jailtime?

Slim and none.   And Slim is looking for the exit.

There were already reports that Maxwell was a problem while being held pending trial.

The only way to guarantee they don't reoffend once they are out is to make sure they don't get out.   Just because Maxwell will be an old woman when she gets out doesn't mean she won't glom onto another rich benefactor and try the same damn thing.   Hell, it might be EASIER for her, because who would suspect a little old lady of doing anything bad?  Plus these folks are really good and finding a weakness and exploiting it.   If "great opportunity" won't work, something else WILL.

I still believe Maxwell has information that certain people don't want to become public knowledge.  If she doesn't die an untimely death by her own hand or helped by someone else's hand I will be surprised.

R Kelly will never be free again.  He is going to be convicted in other jurisdictions and those sentences will run consecutively.

I'm sure she does. I wonder if after a few years in jail will she want to try to make a deal for time off her sentence.

David O. Russell is famous for a few things: Being a pretty good director, getting Jennifer Lawrence her Oscar, and, most importantly, being a huge piece of shit. He’s cruel to people on his sets, he’s gotten into physical altercations before, and by his own admission he groped his niece and then blamed her for it.

[...] Russell’s 19-year-old transgender niece Nicole Peloquin filed a police report in 2011 claiming that the director had groped her while they were working out in a Florida gym. According to her, he offered to help her with ab exercises and then, following a discussion about hormones, he ended up touching her breasts. He admitted to doing it, but he had a good reason for doing so, saying that she was "acting very provocative toward him" and that he was “curious about the breast enhancement." No charges were filed.

Um... what? (The rest of the article describes his on-set bullying and physical/verbal abuse of actors. But this was news to me.)

Um, which of these does he think was a "good reason"? There is no good reason to grope a woman in a public place, and there is absolutely no reason, good or bad, to grope your forking niece! I mean, my reading comprehension is sometimes sketchy but that's what he's saying, right, that he grabbed the breast of his niece, or at least a 19 year old who considers him an uncle, and thinks this was okay because he considered her behaviour provocative?

He does realize that, even if she took her top off in front of him, he could have not touched her? I mean, unless she forcefully took his hand and thrust it on her boob, there is no way in which this was her fault. He still made the conscious decision to touch his nieces breast because he wanted to feel a fake boob? What a pig.

Sentence should have been longer for what he did.  I think at least 20 years.

Yes. It’s hard for me to fathom why someone actually committed sexual assault of a minor gets basically the same sentence as someone who viewed child porn. Josh Duggar was convicted on one count of receiving child porn and got six months longer than Harris who convicted of that plus one count of child sexual assault. I know that Harris agreed to a plea but the other charges being dropped should be more than enough leniency for his acknowledgment of guilt.

Amber Heard asks for mistrial due to wrong juror allegedly being seated.

https://deadline.com/2022/07/johnny-depp-juror-chaos-verdict-dismissed-amber-heard-1235060587/

https://www.cnn.com/2022/07/08/entertainment/johnny-depp-amber-heard-mistrial/index.html

From the Deadline article:

Quote

According to the redacted filing, the summons for jury duty was sent out to a Virginia resident in April of this year for the much delayed $15 million defamation action Depp had set off in March 2019 against Heard for a 2018 Washington Post op-ed she penned on being the “public face” of domestic abuse. However, also according to today’s filing, it seems that there are two individuals residing at the same address with, at the very least, “the same last name” — one a 77-year-old individual and another a 52-year-old individual.

The former was the one summoned, but it looks like the latter was the one who showed up. “Thus, the 52-year-old- (redacted) sitting on the jury for six weeks was never summoned for jury duty on April 11 and did not ‘appear in the list,’ as required,” Friday’s damning filing asserts.

Deadline, maybe don't use sensational language on such a boring story.  Golly, how "damning"!!

Personally I find it damning to everyone involved. So much rides on jury trials and that they could not catch that they had the wrong person is disturbing to me.

This is pretty damning.   He shouldn't have been there to listen to the evidence and participate in deliberations.    The right person might have been chosen or been dismissed and someone else chosen.    This goes right to fairness of the trial.

The juror is in BIG trouble.   I don't see how a judge can't declare a mistrial.

so we have to go through this whole mess again.    Both parties know how they come across, both parties know the strengths and weaknesses of their case (hey Johnny how about you draw a straight line to the OpEd and any actual evidence you lost the part this time).

Hopefully, Amber's lawyers will keep the focus there. I won't expect a camera free retrial but if her lawyers are able to get the jury to stay on point and remember that his side doesn't actually prove the one sentence in her op-ed led to his termination from Disney and WB then there's a chance.

It's pretty damning if he filled out the questionnaire with the information of the older person at the address.  Although I'm not surprised, didn't they seat a juror whose spouse trashed Amber? That shocked me.

I wish Vince McMahon could really be forced to step down from WWE. He owns more voting shares. It seems advertisers would need to pull out before anything can really be done. He already stepped down but not really because he is still head of creative and is still at Raw and Smackdown shows. A member of the board stepped down on Thursday and the next day more news broke about him paying over 12 million dollars to females in hush money. He needs to be completely gone. I don't know what it's going to take.

He filled in the birth date of the older person which makes it nearly impossible to determine how much was a lie. If they had put their own birthdate I think you could make the argument that the juror was fairly selected even if they weren’t called for jury duty. But with them giving the wrong birthdate it’s seems impossible for it to be an innocent mistake rather than a deliberate deception to get on the jury.

Now I want to ask my father in law if he ever considered sending my husband to jury duty in his place (they had the same name).  It's a bold move just going in and pretending to be 20 odd years older than you are and doing this very public facing fraud.  Cause it is fraud and that guy needs to be prosecuted for it, no matter what the outcome of this mistrial thing is.

There's speculation that the rumoured sale of WWE was spurred by McMahon knowing that this investigation was coming. I think this is very plausible, since I doubt Vince would explore selling WWE unless he felt like he had to. Now, I'm not convinced that Vince doesn't survive this scandal (because Johnny Ace looks like he'll be the one to take the fall), but I wouldn't be surprised if WWE gets sold as a result of the scandal.

It may not be the answer you were looking for, but, let's remember who this is. I'm sure Vince has a lot more stuff in his closet that is also waiting to get out.

I know Vince has tons more skeletons. Even stories from the 1980s are making the rounds again. Knowing Vince he may slither through this scandal as well. It's a shame.

Amber Heard sued by her insurance company, won't pay for 'wilful defamation'.

Quote

New York Marine and General Insurance Co. said in its court filing Friday in the U.S. District Court in California that the jury’s finding of defamation “establish that Heard’s liability is caused by the willful acts of Heard.” As a result, the insurer does not need to pay out on Heard’s general liability policy with per occurrence limit of liability of $1 million since willful acts are not covered....

New York Marine, a member of ProSight Specialty Group, said it told Heard the company would provide a legal defense and supplied a law firm but the firm was not included and eventually withdrew from the case, according to the court document. Under the terms of the policy, Heard had obligations to include the insurer during legal proceedings, said New York Marine.

The court document also outlined the court’s instructions to the jury following the Depp-Heard trial to determine if Heard’s comments were false, intentionally defamatory, and made with actual malice. The jury’s findings meant that each are true, the insurer alleged.

New York Marine is looking for a declaratory judgment to establish it has no obligation to indemnify Heard for the judgement against her or any underlying actions.

LET IT GO JOHNNY.   If you want to be done with this woman, LET IT.

Sometimes it's impossible. This: "If I had a dime, it wouldn’t reach your hand" is the same as this: "If you told me you were drowning, I would not lend a hand".

IMO, if writing about a bad situation helps to get it out of your system, I say go for it.

He actually did that years ago. He co-wrote songs with Vanessa Paradis, for his band and with big names like Steven Tyler. The songs making news right now are ones he co-wrote with Beck that are about to be released.

I can’t stand Depp but, in fairness to him, he hasn’t actually said that the song was written about Amber. Some of the lyrics are being interpreted to be about her not I can’t find anything that confirms it.
