The song sucks, it sounds like Britney Spears before she went nuts.

Why does Joe Jonas have a pornstach?

Duuuude, that is so true. That song sounds like some weird "I'm A Slave 4 U" song. It's like, yeah. Taylor might be on her way to crazytowns.

Joe Jonas' pornstache is actually kinda nice. It gives him character. That being said, it's a little crazy that we're pretending he's a new artist just because he was a crappy new band. That's like if one of the One Direction dudes started a band and we're going to act like they're so new.

I loved Pink's performance, kinda. I wish she would've done the four separate performances like Rihanna did last year. She has plenty of hits she didn't even get to. I loved her speech too. Pink's one of the few believable bad girls in music. Her, Robyn, Jessie J, RiRi. There's something about them. The rest of these hoes are fronting.

I enjoyed Demi Lovato's performance, kinda. This is the second time she's performed off-site at the VMAs, and if I recall, she had a beachy theme last time too. I don't know why she was dressed like a lady ninja, though.

Alessia Cara started her performance looking like Cardi B headed to the Oscars.

And...am I the only one not feeling the labyrinthine stage? Why can't we just do it at the Metropolitan Opera House like in the olden days.

Tonight's sub theme is SHADE.  Taylor with her video, Fifth Harmony's "fifth" member suddenly jumping backwards into oblivion, Katy and...half of her comments.   That's a pretty stark contrast to Pink's speech any song featuring Alessia Cara.

Never heard or seen Logic until tonight.  I had no idea why they kept on showing him on camera, I thought he was a lost college student.

Logic means well, but subtle is not the dude's strong suit. He gives me preach-y Woke vibes like Macklemore when he first came out.

You know what would've been nice? Two rock singers doing an acoustic version of "Hunger Strike" by Temple of the Dog. Shoot, they probably could've called up Eddie Vedder and just got Daughtry or even Pink or somebody to do Chris Cornell's part. It would've been fitting and powerful. But this heavy handed on-the-nose thing reminds me of Lady Gaga's performance at the Oscars a couple of years ago.

Chris Rock 1999 is probably the best one ever.  I find that a lot of music award shows like this and the Grammys simply don't work in an arena.

I agree.

So that was a weird little performance by 30STM. But: I don't know what upsets me more. The fact that it sounds like an Imagine Dragons knockoff, or that they really got freaking Quavo on the song.

So Kendrick won Video of the Year? Eh, okay. I actually think that was the only video that actually came out this year. Whatever.

I've been sitting here wondering Faux-ko Ono is with that baggy shirt and low-sitting red glasses. It's just Miley's dumpy sister who apparently does music too. Whatever.

Mtlchick, you're right that the theme for tonight is shade. Check out Katy and Nicki doing their shady song "Swish Swish". I swear sometimes that song sounds like Milkshake by Kelis.

Shawn Mendes is so freaking cute. I'm not apologizing that I could be his mom (a teen mom, but still).

So I'm the only one that cried during the Logic performance? I think what got to me were some of the suicide attempt survivors onstage were crying. They were so brace to do something like that. Also, his speech was uplifting and needed to be said.

Like I said, I liked the message, but it's just a little condescending when people on the idiot box talk to me like what they're saying is the newest shit ever. Because 9 times out of 10, it's really not. Millennials acting like they're the only ones who Get It annoys the crap out of me, and I'm technically one of them.

It does highlight another point I've been making for some time now. Top 40 music is way too damn happy and cheery these days. Everything is about turning up, partying, or some girl's ass. I wish music was a bit more conscious and "real" and, I don't know, sad. I think people can relate. Adele's music is consistently dour and people love her. Sam Smith's entire first record was about unrequited love. The only reason we care about Lorde was because she came out with that deep, brooding voice complaining about modern-day music. It seems like back in my day -- I'm officially old -- it was kind of in to be a little sad and misunderstood. Now it's just window-dressing.

People in their teens/twenties thinking they're the only ones who "get it" happens with every generation. It's nothing new to the world, but it's all new to them.

Funny you say that, because since last year, Internet pop music reviewer Todd in the Shadows has been saying that pop music has been too depressing and downbeat, at least sonically. It's only recently that he's started feeling like it's getting somewhat happy sounding again.

I don't know what year it was but I remember after Marilyn Manson performed "The Beautiful People" Chris said "GET YOUR ASS TO CHURCH!" I still say that til this day. Good stuff, good times.

My verdict: for the most part, it sucked. Kendrick, P!nk, Logic,Alessia Cara, the Rev. Robert Lee & Susan Bro (Heather Heyer's Mother) were the best things about it.

Taylor Swift was funnier in the last minute of the "Look What You Made Me Do" video than Katy Perry was the whole night.

A couple of Tiffany Haddish's jokes were kind of funny, but not with Kevin Hart driving them into the ground.  What was that?  And I also have no patience for Tiffany's inability to pronounce anyone's name correctly.

Also, opening with Shawn Mendes?  Who thought that was a good idea?  His songs aren't the type to open major awards shows.

Ugh.

I was happy to see Cardi. She was funny. And I’m increasingly growing fond of Shawn Mendes and his palpable normalcy.

And then Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish came out.

Tiffany’s outfit is awful. And they gave an award to Nicki Minaj, who is increasingly becoming a drug addict in our faces. Her outfit is also awful. And her giant fake butt is...

Not sure who Bazzi is, but I think that song kinda blows. He’s like the Jonas Bros who finally got to strike out in his own.

Logic is officially the fucking Captain Planet of hip-hop. MTV doesn’t need to invite his fake ass back. He loves the parade of pitifuls, doesn’t he? I will admit to going aww when the parents came out, because I’m not made of stone, but still.

P!ATD is underrated. Brenden Urie is a brilliant singer.

Post Malone is a kind soul in the body of a bloated face tatted white rapper.

Jessie Reyes did great. Not sure why I didn’t realize how pretty she is.

Ugh, I hate to admit it but I liked Nicki’s performance. Dammit.

Hayley Kiyoko is like Bebe Rexha with a Asian stage name. Meaning, she’s kinda hot and has an ear for a hook, but she ain’t got it.

I’m really bored by Jennifer Lopez.  I never thought she was anything special (though I do love The Wedding Planner).

I agree with 27bored...I told my daughter earlier that I love watching him perform, he always looks so freaking happy.

And I agree Brenden Urie is underrated.  I told my daughter last week (we talk a lot) that I would love be to see Panic! At the Disco in concert.

J Lo kinda got busy, but having Khaled on stage is like putting ketchup on filet mignon. Just ruins it.

Gotta give it up to J Lo, though. Hard work, looking hot, always pushing, knowing when to step aside, that’s why she’s an icon.

Not a bad performance from Ariana. She channeled her inner Beyoncé, which isn’t a bad idea for her at this stage. It was one of the rare instances where she sounds not just like a pretty girl with a pretty voice, but a good at singing person.

Not sure about PrettyMuch.

And these truth.org commercials are doing the most.

Dude, The Hills is coming back? And they used a Boyce Avenue cover in the commercial?! Wow.

Watched for an Aretha tribute and of course there was not a real one.  The real MTV is dead. 20 years ago their would have been a multi-artist tribute. It's probably all for the best as no one highlighted in this show is talented enough to carry an Aretha tune.

Leave it to Madonna to make it all about herself.

Tell me what Post Malone (of ALL people!) did to deserve to share the stage with Aerosmith?  Yeah, Aero was looking worst for wear, but they are legends.  Post Malone? Really.  GTFO.

I didn't catch most of the show, but there was very little I enjoyed of what I did see.  I thought Ariana Grande was actually pretty good (her song is catchy), Maluma is a gorgeous, gorgeous man, Brandon Urie can sing, Shawn Mendes is too cute, and while I'm no JLo fan, she did the damn thing.  I think her performance reminded me how half-assed most of everything else I saw was.  I did like Nicki Minaj's performance too; she's so extra.  LOL.

I have so many questions about Madonna:  Why does she look like that?  Why WHY does she have a grill in?  She's 60 yrs old!  Nah, man. And HOW could she make that Aretha story totally about her?!

I feel so ancient.  I remember when the VMAs was a HUGE thing.  It was must see tv that you couldn't miss b/c the performances would always be fire, the fashion was always cool, and the unexpected collaborations and events had you talking.  I think they really fell off in the early 2000s and never found their way back.

Why doesnt Madonna recognize that she is a legend and carry herself as such? She tries too hard to be cool and just being Madonna is cool enough. Prince and MJ never needed to try so hard and she doesnt either. No need for this extraness. Did she think that talking about living in a "crack house" (never heard that in all my years of being a fan) would score her points with the young'ns?

Hate to break it to you, Madge, but you are closer in age to Aretha than to those kids in that room. They see you as a legend and not a contemperary. How disappointing that she cant put down her insecurity for one minute to allow the focus to be placed on someone else.

PS. I loved the audience member who shouted "do it!" when Madonna was blathering on about singing "Natural Woman" acapella. Y'all know damn well that didnt happen then and wouldn't be happening now lmao.

She isn't the best singer, but I had to say she did hit some high notes that I never expected out of her.  And I was grinning like a fool when Ja Rule was brought up to do his thing.  (I can't stand him, but the I'm Real remix is one of her best songs.)   The girl works hard.

Brenden singing the Ducktales theme song on Fallon a few months ago...I now get it.  His songs don't do much for me but dude can sing.

It was a mix of what he did last year mixed with Eminen VMAs 2000.  I immediately tuned out.

Nicki knows where to start a fight.  I like Tiffany Haddish, but that Fifth Harmony diss was sort of low.  Nicki's clap back was hilarious.

I did not know this was on tonight.  Man, I did not see a single preview/advertisement for the VMA's this year and I watch at least 1 MTV show regularly.  But, it doesn't sound like I'm missing anything....

They literally have been advertising the vma's every mtv commercial break for most of the summer. They've singly handedly driven the hot beat for Kanye's Lift Yourself into the ground. Don't know how anyone could miss it while watching anything on mtv.

Can someone explain to me Ariana's attraction to Pete Davidson? Because for the life of me I don't understand it. (ScarJo and Colin Jost too. WTF is going on with these SNL hacks?)

Jason Sudekis is also partners and has a kid with Olivia Wilde.  If you looked up all the women David Spade dated over the past 25 years you wouldn't believe it. Some of the hottest women in the business.  Sure the material on the show may not be 100% great but I'm sure they're making them laugh all the time with jokes.

Mike Myers improvising jokes and making pretty actresses laugh IRL in Wayne's World:

I like Madonna enough but she’s always been bad at doing tributes.  Or talking about people after they’ve passed. Apparently she did this for a Prince tribute I don’t remember, but I remember she did it when talking about Micheal Jackson. She tried to do a comparable story with them but it ended up being a story of Madonna.

Granted, mtv kind of set her up for that. I heard rumblings there would be an Aretha tribute, that mtv was working hard all weekend and what we got was a clip of her singing and Madonna talking about how she sang one of her songs for an auction. Um...sure.

I thought Jennifer Lopez’s perfor  was good. I loved hearing I’m real and all that and she can perform and again I like her enough but I’m not a stan. I’m a Stan for britney and I freely admit that and it always makes me a little sad when she got the icon award she didn’t perform.

I don’t know. The thing is these awards are so meh to me, maybe because I’m not really into what the kids are listening to but videos seem like so not of this time anymore. I mean I know thy still are, there’s YouTube and everything but they feel like now they have to be something else to get people to watch. I remember the days of making the video and TRL when it was such a big deal for  a new video  that the band or singer would go to trl just to premiere it! And now I’m pretty meh on the performances of this show as well.

She did the Prince tribute at the Billboard awards.  Let's just say the folks at BET were not having that either.

LMAO, that was perfect.  He's like Diddy now (well, except for not eating a certain body part, but I digress!) in always throwing the name of the performer in the song that said performer is doing.  Heh....at least I didn't hear "WE THE BEST!", which drives me up a fucking wall because it should be "WE'RE THE BEST!"  Once again, I digress....

That said, Jennifer Lynn Lopez, you did work tonight!  Watched her performance at work on Youtube and thoroughly enjoyed myself; from the proud looks from her kids and A-Rod to everyone seemingly being hyped up, I was impressed.  For some reason, watching her dance at 49 doesn't skeeve me out like when Janet or Madonna perform at their ages.

Link to comment

I've said it 1000 times, and I'll say it again: Jennifer Lopez was (and still is, IMO) the best dancer to come out of the late 1990s/early 2000s pop craze. I've been a stan since 1997 (Selena), and I like it when I'm proven right. I loved how she chose moments to sing and then moments to focus on the dancing. That was smart. Also, she looked *great*. I don't understand how she doesn't age. It was also bittersweet watching her perform because she reminds me of a time when the MTV VMAs were actually relevant, and look how they've fallen.

Hell, even when she was trying to make the song Louboutins a thing (and failed), I enjoyed any performance she did because she fully commits to the work.

Well they had to stand next to each other as they are promoting a movie. I mean it’s awkward but they are costars. Also I’m not a fan of Anna’s dress either. I can’t understand Blake’s outfit, but I think she’s wearing things like this because it’s the look the character has in said movie? I’ve seen her working this look on a few other appearances  lately. The same sort of style.

I don't love Anna's dress either, but at least it's 2018 VMA appropriate. All Blake needs to do is add a cape & she's ready to channel Liberace.

I agree but like I said this seems to be the style she’s going with as she does press for this movie and that’s why I think it has something to do with the character in the movie, case in point, her latest Instagram before the VMAs:

It seems to be something she’s doing, it wasn’t right for the VMAs though I agree.

Thank you for this! I’ve been wondering what song that was from (after—like you—seeing the ads a million times); it was driving me a little nuts. Now that I’ve looked up the song—I really like it.
