Episode Discussion II: The TFGH

Culture Check: How can we discuss a character's or actor's appearance without objectifying them? How can we express likes or dislikes and still respect an individual's humanity or be mindful that a character represents a person someone else might relate to or identify with?

I found that genuinely funny—they almost ganged up on Sam for not picking sides. If I were Sam, I'd have immediately told both of them to shove it and leave.

Sam should've pulled a Kelly Taylor, said "I choose me" and walked out.

As another poster noted, it would be a damn shame if those were the final scenes (living) Sam has with the Davis Coven. KeMo deserved better.

She more or less did, and this case it was warranted. She is having surgery later today or tomorrow.

I still think transplants, even live donor ones, have to clear an ethics board.  Whether resources will be used to operate on someone who is comatose.

But then Larry Hagman got a liver, despite being an alcoholic.  Steve Jobs (pancreatic cancer) also got a liver transplant, after moving to a different state with a shorter wait list.  Being rich helps.

Mickey Mantle too, in 1995. I remember his being controversial, and refreshing my memory per Wikipedia: "Some felt that his fame had permitted him to receive a donor liver in just one day, bypassing patients who had been waiting much longer. His doctors insisted that the transplant was based solely on medical criteria, but acknowledged that the very short wait created the appearance of favoritism." He didn't live long after the transplant in any case.

The reason that happened with Jonathan and Tammy is because Tom Pelphrey and Stephanie Gatschet had mad chemistry and set the screen on fire. Their chemistry is what led to that happening. Those two were like WHOAH! The same can most definitely not be said for Sasha and Cody.

A lot of all that was Tom Pelphrey.   He is one amazing actor.  I was surprised that he stayed with GL as long as he did.

I do love Pelphrey, but I will never give more of the credit to only one half of a super popular couple when it's about their chemistry and connection. That is a joint effort, and what they created together. I feel giving more credit to the other--and normally it is given to the male--is what creates situations like Tony Geary getting so much more credit and thus power than Genie Francis. Luke and Laura doesn't work without Laura. Jonathan and Tammy doesn't work without Tammy.

Not calling you out, just pointing out a common thing, especially in the soap community.

While that was a very good parting shot, Kelly really didn't choose herself. Shortly after, she chose coke snortin' Colin. And look where that got her.

And Hagman's transplant saved his life and he lived on for almost 20 years. We lost him in 2012.

oh that's fair - and i totally saw that in the 3 clips i saw. i just mean that. since it's happened before (and people on the show were like ewww cousins) - it's not like "this is the first time ever in soap" (ya know?)  I'm not going to say Jammy was okay because they were hot/had chemistry and Casha is not because they don't really excude the same je ne se qoui.

Very unpopular opinion: I wish Lulu would never wake up.

you know what I don't understand?  Lulu has been in a coma for years, but the liver complication is relatively new.  Why would a liver transplant suddenly cure her or bring her out of her coma?  Wouldn't she still have the same HEAD INJURY that put her in the coma?  She should just go back to being stable, and comatose; which is why I agree with whoever said it makes no sense to give it to her in the first place.

*Rocco and Dante stand above a comatose Lulu, now played by Alexa Havens*
Rocco: I don’t get it Dad. I thought Sam’s liver was supposed to save mom.
Dante: It did.
Rocco: Then why won’t she wake up?

Dante: A liver doesn’t cure brain damage. What would make you think that?

Keeping someone in a coma for so long seems inhumane. For one thing, aside from the liver problems, there has to be a certain degree of muscle atrophy and who knows what kind of brain issues (other than being comatose) might impair her if she ever wakes up. I'm not advocating for euthanasia, but letting nature take its course isn't always a bad thing.

Her current liver is failing and if she doesn’t get a new one, then is going to die. She has weeks left to live without it

It’s not that the liver is going to cure her coma.  However we know that she is definitely going to wake up, miraculously cured.

Sam is barely an afterthought in her own death and the fact that she has to go to Jason/Drew and tell them to be there for their children is a horrible look. And Drew wasn't even at the hospital for Scout...

i know for a lot of coma patients. they do have volunteers to like move their limbs and do massages so they don't atrophy. but yeah like i always have to wonder when they put people in like long term comas on shows  - realistically, what's the point of all of this?

(which is why i have a living directive that basically. just pull plugs and let nature decide for me).

Lulu's blood clot is obviously what puts Isaiah back in the operating room.

I don't need RL medical standards for a soap story, but the show should attempt to explain how giving Lulu a new liver will improve the odds of her waking up from her coma. I'd accept "the enzymes a new liver will be able to synthesize will affect her amygdala and stimulate the synapses." And I just made that up without Google!

Wow, does Holly suck. Robert wasn't nearly as hard on her as he should have been.

And yet Chase and Brooklyn acted as if they found this morning and were sending Violet that night. Are they going with her to Seattle or just shipping her to travel alone?

They said today that Chase is flying with her to Seattle. JL did a wonderful job in the emotional scenes of saying goodbye to Tracy and BLQ. However, it's appalling that Violet's Aunt Elizabeth and cousins Cam, Jake and Aiden never even got a mention in Violet's goodbyes let alone a scene or two with her. When Tracy was happy that the flight got delayed so they could have one last tea party, I thought, okay BLQ now's the time to call Violet's family whom she's spent years getting to know. And the Show is awful for having Violet tell BLQ that she's the one she'll miss the most - when Uncle Chase is standing right there and despite all of the time Elizabeth has spent with Violet in the time since Hayden disappeared.

You would think BLQ has been Violet's foster mother for her whole life, with all those tears. But JE as always did a great job with Tracy's restrained devastation at seeing Violet leave. Tracy has good intentions but it wasn't her place to give Lila's expensive tea set away to a girl who isn't Lila's great granddaughter.

I get that Lucky is feeling desperate and scared after what Terri said, but the way he pressured his friend Isaiah to do Lulu's surgery was shitty.

I think that's the first/only scene Jason and Drew have had (together) with Sam since CM was cast as nuDrew? The cynic in me says the first time that Willow and Drew have sex will be when she's "comforting" him because he's "devastated" for his daughter and himself that Sam died.

I liked Robert's appalled "you're evil" face when Holly said she never would have told the truth but the Sasha/Cody relationship forced it. Sasha's rant to Maxie had me rolling my eyes because she's talking like Cody is THE ONE and her mother wants to ruin it for selfish reasons.  Sorry Show, I still have zero interest in Robert's so-called surprise daughter or the Cody/ Sasha very mediocre love story.

I really like the nuLucas and Elizabeth colleagues/extended family/friendship chemistry.

THIS. When soaps (especially this one) suck so much about how medicine/business/the law works, I'm not expecting real life standards. We have SORASing, for Cripes' sakes! Let what you posted be the reason or just a miracle.

And we all know the reason why Lulu has been comatose for so long-Frank fired Emme and didn't feel like recasting the character until hello! JJ willing to come back to the show for an extended time.

Both Genie and JJ are chemistry magnets, so I'm hoping newnewLulu will be believable.

As for the Davis Coven? Sadly, they haven't been what we all dubbed them since the recasts. What made them so for me was the chemistry with Haley, Lexi and Kelly.

really enjoyed the Tracy/Laura scenes.  Way to honour the show's history and write it well, and have two good actresses play it.

I also liked Sasha going to Robert's office to ask for a DNA test. She's got twice the brains and morality of Holly.

Maxie spoke for me today. KSt is looking good.

I'm glad to know that Laura has a nanny for Ace.

I hated the Davis coven scene. Both Molly and Kristina are awful now. The fighting appeals to the lowest feeling of the viewers. End this story now.

I'm going to miss Violet. They should have kept her on the show and trot her out once ever four months or so. With Charlotte off screen, Scout is the only girl in the coming age group. Brook Lynn's baby will need to be SORASed a lot to date Rocco or Danny. I'll look for the actress on Will Trent.

They really don't know what to do with Gio.  Or Lois for that matter. Both of them could lift out and nothing would change.

I agree with all of this!  Tracy and Laura were awesome.  I’m in the minority but I like Violet and will miss her, especially her interactions with Tracy.  I have no idea what Gio is even doing here.  And the coven is going to sorely miss Sam. A shame that Kristina and Molly made it all about themselves when Sam was telling them some extremely serious news.

How pathetic that Sam has to ask the deadbeat dads of her kids to be fathers to them.

Way to violate HIPAA by looking at Lulu's chart, Lucas and Elizabeth! Just because you're friends/family doesn't mean you can snoop with abandon. But with Portia as co-CoS, the rules aren't being followed by anyone.

I thought Violet's goodbye was handled well. I hate that she's the baby pusher for Chase and BLQ, but whatever. She's leaving. Once they stopped writing her as an obnoxiously precocious kid, I liked her.

A Holly/Robert flashback! I did not expect that.

Not me over here crying over Violet’s goodbye.  Sniff sniff.  Tracy and the tea party, a Yuri appearance, it was so sweet.  I don’t think the sadness was over the top.  It’s easy to get attached to children, even when you know it’s not a permanent thing.

Jane Eliot is an amazing actress.  She elevates every scene she is in.

The more I see of Holly, the less I like her.  And making Cody/Sasha cousins is just....shoddy writing to break them up so that the writers can pair them with others.  A Nulu/Dante/Cody triangle, Sasha/Isiah/Lucky triangle or something silly like that.

Ventilator-gate! Is there an "Angel of Death" in GH? Or has Portia's propensity for taking matters into her own hands led her to stop all the anxiety and discussions over Lulu's condition so everyone can refocus on her crusade against Heather and Brad?

I went verklempt watching Tracy and Vilolet. The quiet “ I love you” from both seemed ad libbed. Yes, sometimes it was all pretty treacley with Violet but there’s a lot of talent in that little girl.

Unfun fact! My sister was in a coma for 17 days after a car accident ( she's okay now)  that was long enough to suffer muscle atrophy. She was in PT for about three months before being able to walk on her own

Soapy coma fact: she lost about a year's worth of memories, so that is not just a soap thing. Fortunately, she did not have anyone posing as her boyfriend or other shenanigans.

I saw on Twitter that someone wished Sasha had been Celia/ Grant Andrews kid and her identity was kept secret to keep her safe from the DVX. (A waay better ret-con IMO, due to Sasha kind of looking like Celia and Celia was a distant enough cousin that the sasha-Michael thing wouldn't be too gross)

So much for my preferred "Sidwell is the father".  But it was nice to get a look at young Robert for a moment.

I agree that it was ridiculous not to give Violet time with Liz and sons.  That's been a glaring absence since Finn went to rehab.  Violet was out the door so fast that it seemed as though the writers made the decision one day, and sent her packing the next.

Here's what really struck me today.  I know how beautiful Jane Elliot is, and how she can act circles around her scene partners.  But today, this 77 year old woman squatted down to hug Violet and then got herself back to standing, with minimal effort, on camera.  I'm younger than she is, and I never get down unless I have a solid plan on how to get back up.  JE is my hero.

I don't care for Violet, but I thought those scenes hit the right emotional notes. I think it's sad when a child gets a better send off than a veteran actress, but that's just me. I'm glad I don't have to hear talk of Chase and BLQ's baby anymore. For a second when Violet said she had a secret to tell BLQ, I thought she was about to tell her that she's already pregnant.

Sam having to tell Drew and Jason how to take care of their kids and asking Jason to spend time at the Qs with his son was all sorts of pathetic. Two deadbeats for the price of one.

I liked seeing Yuri. I'm assuming his offscreen relationship with Terri is still going strong.

Yuri and Terri are the most mature couple on the show, maybe second only to Laura and Kevin.

OMG that was my exact thought when I watched! I’m 64 and could never get up from the floor with such ease and grace. To quote Billy Crystal, ‘I’ll have what she’s having.’

I didn’t appreciate Liz and Lucas snooping in lulu’s chart but it was nice to hear someone finally admit that a liver transplant is not going to improve Lulu’s quality of life or bring her out of the coma.

Oh FUCK YOU, SHOW! Robert Scorpio is NOT a cheater! For him to have knocked up Holly, he would have had to cheat on Anna.

I’m just rolling my eyes at one obstacle after another for this life saving surgery for Lulu, when we know that she’s been recast.

And to repeat: this is a SOAP. If Jake can return from the dead after his organs have been harvested, and Nina waking up after 20 years in a coma, Lulu will be FINE. I’m sure that the staff at the facility took care of her so her muscles didn’t atrophy. We learned Laura and Maxie have been visiting and giving her manicures and keeping her hands and arms moisturized. But I suspect Lulu will remain comatose until Sweeps next month!

To inject a bit of RL into this, nowadays you can't give away fine china sets that have been in the family for years to any young adults. Younger people don't want the bother of them. I'm betting that Lila's tea set went to Tracy, and Tracy can give it to whoever she would like to give it to, knowing that it is very unlikely that anyone else in the family would want it.

Young people don’t want China sets because they don’t want to hand wash them after every use. The Quartermaine’s have people like Sasha doing their dishes, so no such concern.

My mom's fine china was dishwasher safe, but places like Replacements.com weren't interested. It ended up going into the estate sale we had for the other stuff we didn't want or couldn't donate.

There's also a space issue with storing china you don't use on a regular basis.

Tracy told Violet when they played tea party in the Q kitchen, and today when BLQ said she's never been allowed to use the china, that it had been Lila's but it has not been specified whether Lila gave it to her specifically or if the china is considered Q family heirlooms for the great grandchildren. Since her own granddaughter BLQ is clearly enjoying having a tea party with her husband and niece, I think it's insulting that Tracy didn't even think about the china being inherited by BLQ and Chase to use with their future children and Violet, or possibly Monica's granddaughter Scout in the future. I get that Tracy thinks Violet is the most precious child in the world who should have special things, but Tracy's line that Lila would want someone to "enjoy" the china rings false to me because Violet is 9 years old. Is she still going to want to play tea party in three years? Probably not. If for some reason Chase and BLQ broke up/divorced in the future, would BLQ ever see Violet again? Probably not. So either way, Lila's lovely, expensive china sits in a box not being used by Lila's descendants.

You're making a generalization. There are young people today who like tea and would value the family's fine china. I got the impression BLQ considered using great grandmother Lila's china to be a privilege.  Also, she didn't live with her Quartermaine Family when she was Violet's age, so she has missed out on some family/heritage experiences.

Yes, hand washing is tedious but you're not using the china weekly so it's not a big inconvenience. Also the Quartermaines having staff to wash the dishes is a very valid point. BLQ, Chase and future family living there can use the china and not deal with the "hassle."

It is a bit of a generalization, but one based on my personal experience attempting to distribute my parents' and other relatives' belongings. Things that I thought would be cherished or even wanted were passed over time and again. My best hope for some of the more interesting pieces will probably be to sell them.
