It's kind of funny to see how things come in style, then go out of style, then come back again. I still like antique brass, but it's a thing of the past. Now the trend is the really dark metal, and while I do like that for some things, I prefer the bronze finish over the darker finish because the bronze blends in better with the furniture I already have. It's as if these designers think that we can all afford to throw out everything and start over with each new passing fad. As breezy424 said, for many of us it's about blending in the new with the old. 5 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/75133-get-a-room-with-carson-and-thom-general-discussion/page/4/#findComment-4854621

I should have stock in Sherwin Williams with all of the paint I've bought over the years, and I'm surprised none the fine folks at my local SW stores ever mentioned this product, especially whenever I talked to them about wallpaper. Granted, it was usually a conversation about how to remove wallpaper that was eons old, so they really didn't have a reason to mention it, I suppose. Wallpaper that was applied in the 60's had a super strong adhesive, and it's a bitch to remove! At least the newer products are easier to change out. I do love wallpaper, but I'm not crazy about Thom's selections thus far. I think some of them would've been better on an accent wall rather than doing an entire room or two in the same pattern. 1 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/75133-get-a-room-with-carson-and-thom-general-discussion/page/4/#findComment-4858470
pasdetrois November 23, 2018 Share November 23, 2018 I think the designs are suffering from a rushed, penny-pinching TV production schedule. The results look kind of jumbled together and not well-thought out. Maybe they are limited to using products from the stores that are shown. I too have not cared for the wallpaper choices. And I hate the return of brass. The Shabby Chic fad had those painted chandeliers 20 years ago. Stop trying to make Carson as a DIYer happen; it cheapens him. I think they should focus on one property per episode. And they don't all have to be McMansions. Are Thom and Carson being tongue-in-cheek when they announce each week that the final costs were exactly the same as the boo-jay? Have always loved their TV chemistry, but would equally love to eavesdrop on their conversations when the cameras are gone. 10 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/75133-get-a-room-with-carson-and-thom-general-discussion/page/4/#findComment-4866457
Tanichka November 24, 2018 Share November 24, 2018 I liked both the loft and the brownstone. First time. The brownstone was nice, but there's a reason the table is near the kitchen - schlepping food from the kitchen to the dining room. The loft (even with that horror of a sofa) worked, also. Maybe, because Thom didn't use wallpaper. The price of that light fixture was amazing (not in a good way). SHD November 24, 2018 Share November 24, 2018 (edited) Are they ever going to do a room that's significantly under budget? They've clearly covered extra costs for clients who didn't have a lot of money (the basement gym) but it seems like they spend ridiculous amounts of money on stupid accessories for the people who have large budgets. Like this week, what was that polar bear or sheep or whatever thing? Wasn't the cost over $1,000? I guess that's peanuts in an $80,000 budget, but still. NowVoyager November 24, 2018 Share November 24, 2018 I LOVE the way they show both large & small boujet projects; you get design porn & real life tips for us regular people. I thought the brownstone was lovely, but I dunno why Carson insisted on pink accents when the lady said she doesn't like pink. I was surprised they didn't ask her about color preferences to begin with, or if they chose to guess, why they didn't go with bright colors like the yellow she was wearing. I really felt for her trying to redesign the home she shared with her late husband. She's so happy & fun-loving; her husband would be proud. The loft was gorgeous! I loved what they did with that enormous brick wall. That white painted tree branch could be a good idea to steal on the cheap. Um, the shaggy chandelier was hideous though. & obscenely expensive. Plus, it looks like a bitch to dust. I googled that old leather sofa while watching the show, although the designer's name escapes me now. I'm glad they didn't touch it. Them jawns are going for $50,000. Used. I'm so glad these two are on tv. It's like on House Hunters - if you tell them your budget for a new home is $500K, don't be mad when the realtor shows you a house that's $500K. If your budget is actually $450K, tell them that! The widow's late husband was right - I don't know what they paid for their home but I am certain it's worth a LOT more than they paid for it now. The median home price in Clinton Hill is something like $850K. And I loved the found doors and fireplace! I wasn't crazy about the pink accents - I don't like pink either and wouldn't want it in my home. I am all about trying to make efficient use of space and I noticed right away that the loft wasn't doing that - everything was crammed into corners and there was this huge chunk of open space in the middle. I think especially with an open loft space like that or the open floor plans that are so popular now (I'm not a fan, but that's me), efficient use of space becomes more important, not less. I mostly liked the loft but a) I totally thought they should have been able to redo the couch and b) I hated that light fixture. 3 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/75133-get-a-room-with-carson-and-thom-general-discussion/page/4/#findComment-4867969
ByaNose November 24, 2018 Share November 24, 2018 The shaggy chandelier was ugly and over priced. Overall, the loft looked pretty cool but none of it was my taste. 2727 November 25, 2018 Share November 25, 2018 I'm curious to know if reupholstering would significantly affect the price of the sofa or not. Even valuable antique furniture gets new fabric at some point. This piece was only from the 70s, though, so I can also see collectors wanting the original leather. I wondered about the boujet for the loft since reupholstering surely would have cost $8K or more on a piece that size. I guess Thom threw the surplus sofa money into things like a $3K polar bear. I liked Carson's smaller project but thought the room looked overcrowded in the end. Unless the owner specified that she needed seating for 10, the two side chairs flanking the fireplace and the table between them were overkill to me. But the owner was ecstatic and that's always nice to see. The reactions of the loft folks were kind of subdued, perhaps in keeping with their "anything you do is fine" aesthetic. 4 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/75133-get-a-room-with-carson-and-thom-general-discussion/page/4/#findComment-4869065
raven November 25, 2018 Share November 25, 2018 Binged all these eps the other day and really enjoyed it. Carson and Thom have a fun, comfortable chemistry and it's nice to have something light hearted to watch. I much preferred the smaller jobs than the larger ones; not just because I'm not a McMansion person but the larger budgets seemed to mean more stuff and who really needs an $8,000 ottoman? LOL. The one big job I actually liked was one it seems that most of you did not :) the Jewish couple's house came out nice. I liked the wallpaper; it was a nice highlight to the sofa and tied the rooms together. Maybe the stuff didn't seem quite so pronounced because of the room layout. The other larger jobs kind of blended together - hazard of binge watching. The client who wanted a $2K home gym obviously doesn't know the prices of gym equipment, was my first thought. That had the smallest budget and I thought was a good example of being creative without a lot of money - obviously the new equipment was donated/given as sponsorship but I little paint and accessorizing can go a long way. I don't know if Thom & Carson actually paid for going over budget or if the equipment is given as free advertising or the show pays. I like Carson's DIY projects - I'm a person who even with the most detailed instructions can still flub any DIY stuff, no matter how easy they make it seem. I think my favorites were the studio apartment for the gay man who hadn't been out that long and the woman with the brownstone that they just did last episode. I like being creative with smaller living spaces. Doesn't hurt that they both had cute dogs, though the woman's dog got the caption "Fabulous Pet"! The creative chyrons and Carson's parking are two of my favorite things about the show. 8 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/75133-get-a-room-with-carson-and-thom-general-discussion/page/4/#findComment-4869282

GoldaVining November 26, 2018 Share November 26, 2018 Unpopular opinion but I loved that shaggy chandelier. I think the boys did a good job reading their clients. Not only was the wife wearing those tassel earrings, but look at her tunic dress in the reveal shots. I think the woman who wears that tunic would like that shaggy chandelier. I agree with an earlier poster who wouldn't want that chandelier hanging over their food. I think it would be hard to dust and de-cobweb. Maybe better used in a different area. I loved the 1970's leather couch. Bloody cool. I'm glad they didn't reupholster it. Recovered it is hardly the same sofa the man's father sat on. My sister had this ridiculously ornate, old, huge, heavy, comfy couch that she loved. The fabric was embroidered turquoise. It was a lot and it was awesome. My sister died young (27), and my parents made a big to-do about keeping her fabulous couch. They spent almost 3 thousand dollars getting the wood redone and the fabric reupholstered in champagne/beige. It looks nice but what was the point? Now it is just a random piece of furniture that in no way reflects my sister's sweet and quirky personality and she never sat on it. It was important to the husband to keep his father's sofa intact and good on him for standing his ground. I think the brown leather looked great with the other leather items the boys added to the room. The dining chairs with the satchel straps and buckles on the backs looked so handsome. I liked almost everything about this room except for the purple, but that's just me. Purple is a bit nauseating. The woman with the brownstone was a darling with her squeaky laugh and positive energy. So endearing. It was hard to see her changing her home knowing she wanted to move forward but also afraid of losing the feeling of what she and her husband had created together. I'm glad she seemed so happy at the reveal and that the change appeared to be a good one. The room was lovely. That bubbly chandelier she wanted to keep was meaningful and it fit the new glam look perfectly. The only thing I didn't like were the cheap curtain rods. The curtains were plain but pretty. The rods were bargain basement. Did I see right? Weren't they those white cafe curtain rods with the little crappy plastic ends? Ugh. I know those too well. 6 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/75133-get-a-room-with-carson-and-thom-general-discussion/page/4/#findComment-4871776

Of course, that’s just my opinion. 4 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/75133-get-a-room-with-carson-and-thom-general-discussion/page/4/#findComment-4876708
Door County Cherry November 28, 2018 Share November 28, 2018 I don't remember anything wrong with her teeth. IIRC, they were clean, white and straight. They had the gap but that doesn't necessarily have to be "fixed." It can be fixed for cosmetic reasons but Anna Paquin, Samuel L. Jackson, Lauren Hutton, Michael Strahan and Madonna have made it work for them. 10 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/75133-get-a-room-with-carson-and-thom-general-discussion/page/4/#findComment-4877065
Jets4274 November 28, 2018 Share November 28, 2018 (edited) Quote I wouldn’t expect the dentist to work on her own teeth. That’s like saying a heart surgeon should work on their own heart. I am currently watching the episode with Dr. Cox. She does seem like a lovely woman but if she's a dentist, she should be putting the same care into her teeth as she plans on putting into others'. She dresses beautifully so she is about her personal appearance to that degree. I've never seen a dentist with teeth like that. What she has goes beyond having a gap. Her front teeth jut out and aren't straight. I got Invisalign to fix a similar issue and my teeth are straight now (pun intended). Having a redesigned reception area might not be enough to get more clients rolling in. kirklandia November 30, 2018 Share November 30, 2018 One of my favorite design shows ever was Dress My Nest. I actually upgraded my cable subscription to add The Style Network so I could watch it (this was years ago). I think there were only about a dozen episodes. Thom Filicia designed rooms inspired by the client's favorite outfit. 4 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/75133-get-a-room-with-carson-and-thom-general-discussion/page/4/#findComment-4882729
SHD December 1, 2018 Share December 1, 2018 I wonder what the baby's room was before. A walk-in closet? That was not the size of any functional bedroom. That room was way too busy, especially that wallpaper. Loved the rest of the loft. Tom looked like he was going to cry when he saw how happy the bra store owner was. 7 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/75133-get-a-room-with-carson-and-thom-general-discussion/page/4/#findComment-4884843
breezy424 December 1, 2018 Share December 1, 2018 Another fun episode tonight. I didn't care for either redesigns but I think the show is more about Carson and Thom than the decorating. Carson didn't go up on the sidewalk this episode? What? Or did I miss it? It just cracks me up when he does. Carson and the mannequins .... yeah, silly .... but it makes me laugh. 2 minutes ago, SHD said: I wonder what the baby's room was before. A walk-in closet? And I think that without a window it doesn't even classify as bedroom according to fire code. I could be wrong. 5 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/75133-get-a-room-with-carson-and-thom-general-discussion/page/4/#findComment-4884845
2727 December 1, 2018 Share December 1, 2018 This show just makes me happy. There are probably only a few episodes left but I would watch every week until forever. Loved both spaces this time. I thought the German homeowner might faint somewhere along the line, but he even accepted the fyoo-ksia area rug in the end. I liked the artwork before but it looked even better framed out by the bookcases and featured on the wall. Yeah, that is not a legal bedroom in NY, but I thought it turned out really nice. The parents will have to move when the gaby gets too old to sleep in a closet any more. My only quibble with the store was the curtain into the storeroom area. It looked cheap and will get grimy pretty quickly. Add a danged door! I was also curious how crammed the back room ended up being. Even by appointment, I would imagine some customers need to go back there to browse, and the dressing rooms are still there. Lori seemed very nice. All the "smaller space" owners so far have been really sweet and grateful. 8 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/75133-get-a-room-with-carson-and-thom-general-discussion/page/4/#findComment-4884938

LOL Reminded me of the joke in "Annie Hall" when she did that and Woody Allen said, "That's OK, I can walk to the curb from here." Also, they took the subway to one of the locations, so less driving time for Carson! 4 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/75133-get-a-room-with-carson-and-thom-general-discussion/page/4/#findComment-4885130

But he was so sweet and funny about wanting everything white and cheap. Let’s discuss Carson spitting out Italian in a prior episode and quite frankly some serviceable German in this one. I think that under the goofy is a pretty intelligent and talented individual. I’m also liking the design training I’m getting from Tom. The two of them together are just fun. I want to ride in the car with them. Yes, the baby live in a closet. That’s a very NYC thing to do. Sometimes it’s about a baby nurse living in the second bedroom until the baby gets older and you switch from a baby nurse to a daily nanny that doesn’t stay at the apartment. Then the baby now toddler moves to the second bedroom. 12 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/75133-get-a-room-with-carson-and-thom-general-discussion/page/4/#findComment-4885204

I think that under the goofy is a pretty intelligent and talented individual. I've always thought so. He's very quick-witted, which in my experience is a sign of intelligence. I am someone who wears cute underwear and lingerie (no matter what my relationship status, heh), so I know my way around a lingerie shop. The bra bar before was the sort of place that I would go in just to get a basic bra and leave - I wouldn't stay and browse because it just wasn't that welcoming. It was dark and cluttered. But afterward it was more open, brighter, more inviting. You could see what she had to offer. I thought it looked great. (Also, if someone can tell me where Carson got the rainbow sneakers he was wearing in the reveal, that would be great. I love an "athleisure" shoe and those were very fun.) The baby living in a closet didn't bother me (I mean, it's illegal, but meh) - very NYC, as space is at a premium. But the bare nakedness of it at first was driving me nuts. I know the German husband hated color (which: boo), but babies need color! I hated the glowing V, but I guess they had to keep it. 4 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/75133-get-a-room-with-carson-and-thom-general-discussion/page/4/#findComment-4885428
Chit Chat December 1, 2018 Share December 1, 2018 (edited) Overall, I liked both results this time. I liked the idea for the wallpaper in the baby's room, but a mural on just one wall would've been good too. It was a little busy, but yet I liked it! Yay for Carson and Thom for seeing the hanging 'V' as a big safety issue. How did the Dads and the nanny not see that? Maybe the cord was inaccessible to the baby, but still, something like that hanging over the bed made me cringe! No electrical devices near the crib! I really liked the redesigned living space. It's amazing how much space you can create just by moving the sofa! The book shelves were really nice too. The bra shop looked better less cluttered. Since she does a lot of consulting, it made sense not to have so much merchandise taking up the main space. People can tell her what they're looking for, and she can bring them out some items to choose from. I do hope they left the stockroom neat and tidy! Carson and Thom are hilarious as ever. "There's frugal, then there's frugal with bad taste!" Edited December 1, 2018 by ChitChat Edited because I misquoted Carson! 7 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/75133-get-a-room-with-carson-and-thom-general-discussion/page/4/#findComment-4885450

There are probably only a few episodes left but I would watch every week until forever. Both the bra shop and the apartment redesigns were total successes in my opinion. Gorgeous all around! Johnny and Sebastian's tiny NY apartment was looking large after the redo. The sitting area was lovely with the round table. Adding the mirror around the window worked great and is a really good tip for the rest of us. Inexpensive and achievable for the average person/budget. Baby Vaughn's room is never going to be anything but a closet, but I loved that wallpaper. I think there were too many accessories, but that's fine, all the little stuff is going to change as the baby gets older anyway. I loved listening to Carson speaking German but the best segment was Carson teasing Sebastian in English in a clipped German accent saying, "What a symphony of beauty,,,," Hahahaha! I had to rewind that segment several times. So funny. Happy to see stiff Sebastian laughing along cheerfully as they teased him. The bra shop redesign was unbelievable. What a stunner! It went from average to amazing in under 10 grand?! Now I can see the 'by appointment only' business model working. Before it didn't seem special but now I can imagine people dropping some serious cashish there. Edited December 1, 2018 by GoldaVining Vaughn probably has an h in it? 12 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/75133-get-a-room-with-carson-and-thom-general-discussion/page/4/#findComment-4885659
