It feels like MSNBC put a lot of emphasis on in studio discussion between the hosts and interviewees/pundits. Does that make sense in the pandemic world? Will someone like Claire McCaskill still fly in for a couple of day's worth of spots? Do regulars who used to live in DC/NY but moved out after they became hotspots return? Now that everybody has setups that allow them to participate from home, it would seem that the cost/benefit analysis for studio visits may have changed. 2 2 Link to comment

Friday night we tuned into Rachel and she announced at the top of the show that she'd be on for 90 minutes! No explanation. She didn't seem to understand why either, and what she did say was almost like desperately holding up a note that said "Help, the wheels have come off this place!" I was thinking, "This can't be how management wanted her to serve up the change." Good for her! We only intended to watch the first few minutes anyway so I don't know what happened in the remaining half hour of what would have been Lawrence's slot. Just Here July 9, 2020 Share July 9, 2020 Press release about Joy Reid's new show: From the linked release: Quote NEW YORK (July 9, 2020) – MSNBC anchor Joy Reid has been named host of “The ReidOut,” a new weeknight evening program at 7 p.m. ET that will premiere Monday, July 20 on MSNBC. The Washington, D.C.-based show will feature one-on-one conversations with politicians and newsmakers while addressing provocative political issues both inside and outside of the beltway. Reid, who is also a best-selling author and public speaker, joined MSNBC in 2011 as a contributor. Drawing from her decades-long experience in politics, passion for addressing the intersection of race, justice and culture, as well as her signature tenacious interviewing style, Reid will kick off MSNBC’s primetime lineup by delving into American politics as it unfolds. Tina Urbanski will serve as the Executive Producer. Urbanski was a co-executive producer for Hardball. From a January 2018 THR article (presumably based on a press release): Quote Urbanski is getting bumped up from senior producer to co-executive producer, with Court Harson, of Hardball with Chris Matthews. She began her career at the network as Matthews' assistant and rose the ranks. Urbanski replaced a previous co-executive producer, Ann Klenk, who retired from NBC. 1 3 Link to comment

Just Here August 3, 2020 Share August 3, 2020 Here's the Variety article that broke the news about MSNBC's afternoon schedule shuffle: Chuck Todd Expands to Streaming as MSNBC Overhauls Afternoons (EXCLUSIVE) Outside of Meet The Press, it sounds like Todd will be focusing more on digital/streaming, hence the move to an earlier time slot for his weekday program. Quote Starting in September, Todd will launch a weekly political program on both live-streaming outlet NBC News Now as well as NBCUniversal’s Peacock streaming-video hub, just in time to dovetail with what is likely to be rising interest in the 2020 presidential election. Todd will also start anchoring pre- and post-event programming around big political-news nights, starting with the Democratic and Republican conventions later this month, and, in coming weeks, around debates and Election Night. NBC News plans to create an additional production team for the anchor’s streaming initiatives. The article is a bit unclear about Todd's new anchoring responsibilities, but presumably it will be for NBC News Now. The article also had some comparative ad revenue details for MSNBC versus CNN and FNC: Quote MSNBC’s 2020 ad revenue is seen falling to $672.4 million from $728.9 million in the previous year, according to market-research firm Kagan, part of S&P Global Marketing Intelligence. The network is seen capturing more advertising than CNN this year – $619.2 million – but less than Fox News Channel, which is predicted to take in more than $1.16 billion. 1 1 Link to comment
Jaded August 3, 2020 Share August 3, 2020 (edited) I kind of like Joy. She's not someone I can watch daily though. That's why viewing her weekend show worked better. I still miss Melissa Harris Perry. I don't know why MSNBC and NBC in general seems to have so much confidence in Chuck Toad's abilities. Milburn Stone August 6, 2020 Share August 6, 2020 I'd be interested to know from the Variety article whether all the news channels had a drop in revenue over year ago, or just MSNBC. It doesn't say. And if all did, did some drop more than others. It doesn't say that, either. If all did, it could be Covid related. Or it could be related to things that were in the news last year (which turned people into news junkies at a whole new level) that weren't in the news this year. 2 Link to comment
annzeepark914 August 6, 2020 Share August 6, 2020 I'm sick of always having to read about Fox Newz leading the pack in ratings & ad revenue. The mainstream news outlets have to share a mix of viewers whereas Fox only attracts a certain ideological group. Bronx Babe August 7, 2020 Share August 7, 2020 God how I miss Walter Cronkite, Huntley & Brinkley and the good old days when there were three networks. We were a relatively united country in this respect. Now with the migraine-inducing, blood-pressure climbing 24/7 news cycle, all these separate news channels, combined with the rise of social media, are preaching to their individual choirs, and, imo, creating deep divisions in this country, as if we didn't have enough already. I know we can't return to the past. I'm very sad about this. 8 Link to comment
tres bien August 8, 2020 Share August 8, 2020 (edited) It'll be interesting to see what becomes of the AM Joy spot. There have been a couple of good subs, Zerlina Maxwell and Tiffany Cross. At 5 am if there is any Breaking News they can call Kier Simmons in London and let him cover the story. Edited August 8, 2020 by tres bien 2 Link to comment
